I was going to keep this to myself and forum users but I figured posting it on the main site won’t hurt. Yesterday I released and alpha version of Megaman 8-Bit Deathmatch for people to play with and tell me what they think of it. Alpha is the key word here, as it reeks of unfinishedness. This is the current state of this WAD for those who were interested. I’m not abandoning the project but I think it will be some time before I work on it again, most likely in 2010.
The mod should work on the latest version Skulltag but I have to distress that NOTHING you see is final. The weapon system, the maps, everything is subject to change so don’t be discouraged from picking up a later version of this mod. So what do you think?

EDIT: It seems I’ve sturred up quite an audience with this mod, but a lot of people probably aren’t too familiar with running Doom mods so here’s a quick tutorial:
Step 1: Buy a copy of Doom2. You can get it off the flea market for mere pennies these days, or just grab it off steam.
Step 2: Download the latest version of Skulltag. Install it to the same version as the Doom2.wad file.
Step 3: Run the megaman pk3 with Skulltag. To be quick and dirty you can just drag and drop it into the skulltag exe file. Be sure to set up your controls, mouse aiming and what not.
Again I must remind people that this is a very early version and the gameplay is a bit aids at the minute, so bear with me. Come 2010 I’ll have something playable. Pinky promise!

Great mod!
I’ve made one video, enjoy

Thanks for playing! I notice you were moving really slow on that video and had a hard time clearing those jumps. Next time you play, try putting always run on in the options. Also note that the bots do a terrible job at showing how to play

This really is incredible and hope more people get into it and actually play it online. I’ll be donating some to the developer.

Sorry, I can’t accept donations because both id and Capcom will have me in their crosshairs. If you want to help out, spread the word man!

Awesome indeed!
We had a similar idea concurrently, it seems. As an academic project here in our university we made a full 3d game (pure OpenGL) combining the idea of a 3D-megaman and Lego pieces.
There`s a video (the narration is in portuguese so just fast forward to about half the video to see some action). Note that this video is of a very early release from early september and we have done so much more now, it’s starting to look like a finished game.
Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9XszFKpinc
Basically, we created a method of extracting 3d enemies composed by individual lego pieces(and walls and whatnot) from bmp files. So, as you can imagine, if you shoot skullman’s head out, he keeps fighting. But can’t aim! I’m sure you get the general picture from this simple example.
Well, we want to implement the very same gameplay (I think, haven’t downloaded and played your version yet!) of defeating classical enemies, taking their powers… Of course, everything and everyone is going to be built of lego pieces that blow off. I really hope it’s fun to play.
Anyway, I hope you are as excited as we are about the fact other people around the world think alike (3d megaman? I’m in.). Email me if you want to chat or trade some ideas, will ya?
Keep up the good work!

Great job man! Loving the idea of it, me being a megaman fan since I was like 6 and all…
If you’re looking for help just lemme know. I can’t wait to see this thing’s beta release if the alpha was as solid as this. xD

Is the Mega Man skin going to get a release so we can use it other than in the mod?
Quote
No but it could be done very easily so why not?
Quote
Awesome! I’d really appreciate it if you do.

Capcom would probably attack you like rabid wolves but i think Id is pretty cool with that kinda stuff.
Then again, im quite sure that their publishers would disagree.
Looks good so far anyway. Brings me way back to my childhood. Good memories. I feel like dusting off my old 8-Bit console and play some old games.
