Lessons from Doom

Jean-Paul LeBreton, the lead lever designer of Bioshock 2 (a game I am yet to give a crap about), has created one of the Bioshock 2 levels in Doom 2. Pretty cool I guess, but that’s not why I’m posting about it. The dude also wrote a little article about Doom 2 pretty much summarizing why Doom is such a great game, why it is has more depth than more recent FPS games and people still care about it.

When I rave on about Doom, so often I am asked why I still bother which such an ancient crappy old game to mod with. I am tired of explaining, and this article explains perfectly why one such as I still mods for and plays Doom. I’m sure most youngster FPS gamers who were introduced through Halo won’t give two craps about it but hopefully it will open a few eyes. Check it out. Bioshock fans should probably check out that map too.

I usualy hate single player, co-op ect. but this map is actually good enouph for me to enjoy it.

Ah yes! I read the whole article and found it very insightful. It’s one thing when a regular person makes these points to someone who is convinced that graphics & modernness (How new it is) = fun.
It’s another thing when one of the lead level designers from one of those new modern games comes and makes those points.

Yes, note how Doom 2 sucks in comparison.

  • Some Noob:

When you said he created this *in doom* does that mean he made it as a wad? If so where can I download :D

  • Check out the links in the post, they should be there somewhere.
