[WIP] Level Master

About

Level Master is a mod for Doom and Doom2 where one player chosen at random becomes the dreaded “Level Master”. The Level Master’s goal is the quickly hide the Exit Rune away from the players who remain still. When the exit is placed, the players are made active and the Level Master gains his full monster summoning powers. The goal of the Level Master is to protect his Exit Rune by summoning monsters anywhere in the map. The other players must fight they way through the hordes of monsters (including the already spawned ones) to find the exit rune before they are killed by the endless amount of monsters the Level Master can throw at them.

Technical

At the start of a regular survival game (no lives and large maps recommended) a Level Master is chosen. Other players freeze while he gets 30 seconds to run off and put the Exit Rune down (obtains all keys at this point). If he runs out of time the Exit Rune spawns wherever he’s currently standing. Once the exit is spawned the Level Master starts regenerating power to summon monsters, and the players are allowed to move. The Level Master can only summon monsters when he has enough power to spawn them. He regains power every second (-1 tic per extra player) and loses the cost of the power when he spawns a monster, so the longer you wait the stronger monsters you can spawn. The Level Master cannot spawn monsters if he doesn’t have enough power, if there’s not enough room OR if players are in visual range of the Level Master. Players cannot see, harm or spectate the level master to see what he’s up to. Their goal is to find the Exit Rune placed by the Level Master. When it is found the Level Master dies and the next level starts up and a new level master is picked. If the players die and the Level Master wins the map is simply reset with a new Level Master, so there’s really no competitive play here and it’s purely for fun.

Server Notes

BEFORE you start up a server please follow these instructions when setting it up.

  • Please set the game mode to Survival. Currently it is the only supported game mode. Any other mode will result in an error.
  • Please set sv_disallowspying 1. Unless you want players to be able to coopspy the level master (you don’t) you should enable this flag!
  • For the same reason, set sv_noautomapallies 1.
  • Please set sv_maxlives 1. Currently only one life is supported and I don’t intend to increase this.
  • Choose a decent map rotation.  See below for a good map rotation for Doom 2.
  • Do not use a wad that replaces or uses any extra monsters/weapons. If you want a Level Master that is compatible with a certain WAD you’ll have to manually do a bit of coding yourself. More details on that on the forum later.
  • Limited your player spots to the amount of player spawn spots in the maps! This is crucial as you’ll get a nasty crash if you don’t. Doom maps all have 4 start spots, do do not allow more than 4 players to join the game. Spectator spots should be fine.
  • Other server settings may screw the game up. Most of the respawning DMFLAGS are fine (useful for tough map packs). Some DMFLAGS can break the game, like starting with the Shotgun. Have a play around and see what you think is best.

These flags are perfect for Level Master Servers if you don’t want to worry about the stuff above.

If you’re using Doom2, not every map is suitable for Level Master. Many of the earlier maps are too small and later maps have co-op traps that can trap a player out of a room. Here’s a list of maps I picked that I thought were pretty good for this game type. Feel free to take out any maps you don’t like ;)

MAP04, MAP06, MAP08, MAP09, MAP10, MAP11, MAP12, MAP13, MAP14, MAP15, MAP16, MAP18, MAP19, MAP20, MAP25, MAP26, MAP27, MAP29, MAP31

If you’re using a custom map set, be sure to check the levels out first. Beware of co-op traps!
