ZPortal
About
ZDoom Portal Gun was originally a single weapon modification for ZDoom inspired by Valve’s impressive Portal demonstration video. Ever since the video was shown, gamers have been making mods for their favourite games with teleportation weapons and even portal guns. I liked this idea and wondered how far I would get if I tried to do this in ZDoom.
The ZDoom Portal Gun WAD is a Doom adventure unlike any other. Instead of the old run n gun Doom offers, you must master the art of getting around crazy level conditions. To aid you in your quest you have your Portal Gun. Not a weapon but a tool which can transport you from one spot to the next. Using this tool you can reach higher ledges, cross pits, get past fast closing doors and much much more. As you try to navigate four large areas you will find new weapons and items to assist you even further as you come across tougher challenges.

Areas
Here are the areas that you will have to explore and solve in ZPortal in order.

Name |
Description |
| Dimensional Gateway | Your adventure begins here. The dimensional gateway is a hub which splits into four more areas. When you first start there is only one area you can access until you get your hands on the portal gun. There’s no thinking to be done here and there’s little to do, it’s a straight forward level selector. | |
Grey Complex |
The first area you visit is extremely bland. Grey being the keyword here, it’s not the most exciting place to be. The simple rooms and puzzles are perfect for any beginner or trainee. Grab your Portal gun, learn how to use it and get back to the Gateway!
The Canyon |
The Canyon is full of rough and spiky cliffs, which means you’ll be holding on edges often. The area is mostly outdoor but there’s also a few dark caverns and underground mazes. You may come to a dead end, which means it’s time to find a new utility to help you get through some of the most complicated terrain. Don’t hold your breath though, because you’ve got a mountain to scale!
Sky Palace |
The Sky Palace is a huge floating citadel riddled with puzzles and hard to reach places. You’ll have to put both your portal guns to the test here if you wish to proceed. Eventually you will unlock your final Portal Gun which will give you access to any areas you couldn’t before. But remember, sometimes you’ll have to rely on your own dexterity!
The Castle |
The castle is the final test of everything you’ve learned in the previous three areas and beyond that. Can you reach the final gateway to reality and end this trial? |
Inventory
Here are a list of guns and items that you will find in ZPortal.

Portal Gun | The standard Portal Gun. Fire a red portal and then a blue one with the alternate fire and transport between the two! You can fire it just about anywhere, whenever you like. Remember that if you fall into a pit your portals will be destroyed.Tip: If you want to teleport right away, aim at the floor and fire! |
Sticky Portal Gun |
The Sticky Portal Gun is a modified version of the Portal Gun. It allows users to “stick” to the portals they’ve created, making it easier to get around corners. However the projectiles launched from this gun have some gravity to them, and users will switch in and out of each portal every few seconds so some timing is required.Tip: Try to time your shots in time with the time it takes to teleport you to another portal. If you’re in a hurry, aim quickly and fire off another shot right after you teleport. |
Mobile Portal Gun |
The Mobile Portal gun’s regular fire shoots off a slow travelling projectile which can be teleported into at any time in mid air. If the projectile touches a solid object it will be destroyed. Because it is extremely difficult to aim your teleports with the red portal, it is advised to use the Mobile Portal Camera. Also since the the red portal is just a projectile, it is not detected by droids. The blue portal is exactly the same as the standard Portal Gun’s. Tip: You can also teleport INTO the red projectile. |
Portal Remover |
The Portal Remover is an item which you can use at any point to remove any active portals. This is handy for when you’re running around and accidentally walking into portals. It works with all three Portal Guns. |
Red Portal Camera |
The Mobile Portal Camera is an item that is found with the Mobile Portal Gun. It allows the user to see through the “eye” of the Red Portal Projectile while it is in mid air. You can stop viewing through the Projectile simply by moving. |
Droids
Droids are robots which only purpose is to stop you. They won’t hurt or kill you, but will try to prevent you from reaching new areas.

Nullify Droid | The Nullify Droid is the most common droid. It remains stationary in the air looking out for any portals. If there’s a portal in sight it will terminate any portals regardless of their location and briefly stun the creator. Keep in mind that it will not notice projectiles, and only open portals. A good tip to remember is that if you fire a portal right next to you, you can teleport through it as it zaps you. They will never notice the Mobile Portal Gun’s red portal.Tip: All the droids are solid objects. Be sure to use that to your advantage. They’re also crushable by certain things. |
Override Droid |
The Override Droid jams any Portal Guns in sight. If you are in range of an Override Droid your screen will show a purple tint and you will be unable to fire any Portal Guns. Because it only targets the weapons it will not destroy any open portals or projectiles. |
Plasma Turret |
The Plasma Turret is a droid only seen on the last areas of the wad. If you are in range the Plasma Turret will watch your every move and fire out a plasma ball every few seconds. The plasma ball won’t kill you but will violently push you away from it, most likely sending you flying into a lava pit!Tip: While the plasma balls can send you flying into lava, they’re also handy for getting places that portals won’t send you! |
