Cave Story was released in 2004 as a PC indie game, and has rapidly evolved into many pieces of art by Nikalis, even if he himself is pretty bad at what he does.

The translations are free, too.

If you like it enough, support Pixel and buy Cave Story + on Steam for a measly $10. You'll get plenty of bonus features.
There's no real excuse for not having played this game other than "I didn't know about it".
That, and I've already shoved it down a lot of your throats both intentionally and unintentionally.
It really is such a fantastic game.

It was increadbily good and hard in the later stages.
The hidden endings would have been nintendo hard to find on your own.
If this was released on the snes it would have been a classic

Learned that he had to save Curly, to unlock Hell. Fun stuff.

Wind Fortress is infuriating.
It's not the stage itself, but the S Rank achievement hurts. The worst thing is that you have to reset the game if you mess up, as for some reason, the timer doesn't reset (i.e. If you choose to retry and you died at a time of 1 minute, it carries over). Challenging yourself is IMO the best part in the game, considering that can be applied to getting the best ending.

I've got it on the wii, and it's decent.  Some interesting weapon choices (not sure what they were thinking with the bubble gun though), but the art looks really flat at times.

I love Cave Story so much, but the fact they keep porting and re-releasing it over and over again is diminishing the awesomeness for me.

Especially since the new modes added to the ports were stolen from the community. (All right, the music and art were original, but the music was just off and the art was apparently just barely polished from a 2x scaler.)

I've played Cave Story on WiiWare, and it was very fun!

It has been so long since I last played Cave Story.
I really like that game, but it is missing something for me.
And I am not a fan of the default controls at all. But that's what things like xmodmap or qjoypad are for~
Also, original version is the only true way to play. Tracker-style music is so much better than what they use in wii/+/3d and Huzzah! just fits better.
