Title: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!
Post by: CutmanMike on August 06, 2016, 02:51:48 AM
As you can probably tell we are now using SMF for our forum software instead of phpbb. There are lots of new things for me to go over so please bear with us while we work everything out. Don't worry, medals and other features should return as soon as we get round to them.

Users with certain symbols in their usernames will be unable to log in, ever. I will allow a name change for these users. Contact me via e-mail (admin @ cutstuff . net without spaces) or @cutmanmike on twitter with your old username and desired new username if this applies to you.

Please report any other issues or oddities you find here.

Edit: Currently aware of the fact spoilers and youtube bbcodes are broken in old posts. Feel free to edit and fix them for now if you wish but I may have to do some kind of mass-fix later on. Some posts you will simply have ti click edit, then they will fix themselves.

hopefully you find a way to port over the old layout (or something similar)

the forums have looked largely the same since before the SGC Demo was a thing
I guess the current theme just sort of... iunno, feels alien almost?

also R.I.P. fun medal :-X

If you go searching for SMF themes and find the most subsilver (old theme) looking one I can add it easy enough.

RIP quick reply and subsilver  :'(

Even with the rocky transition, it's nice to see a more "modern" board. (also it links to the discord, nice)

Now I have to get my avatar set up properly, since I don't like the default "men's loo sign" one.

I'll see if there's a mod for quick reply

Edit: Oh it exists, just had to enable it (if I add any extra themes I will need to enable it for those too)

My main problem with it is that it breaks links to other topics from the previous forums.
Everything else is bearable.

EDIT: Testing edits.

EDIT 2: Scratch that it sucks I don't have invisible edits anymore.

Images in image tags are also broken. RIP Screenshots thread.

You can probably write a script to fix it. They just added an extra HTTP:// for some reason. Old spoilers can be fixed as well since all that broke them was a unique id.

Speaking of images, I noticed that a bunch of people's avatars seem to have vanished as well.
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!
Post by: Yoshiatom on August 06, 2016, 09:06:51 PM
That's likely because the board now only accepts avatars that are 128x128 or under. (Not that it tells you about this...  >:( )
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!
Post by: fortegigasgospel on August 06, 2016, 09:08:50 PM
Fixing images is as easy as hitting the edit icon on your post and then saving, they will show back up.
Not sure about youtube links.
As for old spoilers it seems to have added some coding after "spoiler" so simply remove those and the spoiler will show back up as intended. If you edit without removing these they will show up in text. Anything that was inside your spoiler won't show up until you edit though.
Also SPOILERS INSIDE SPOILERS! We can compact our posts a lot more now which I've already gone and done on key pages (first and last) of all my threads.
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!
Post by: Gummywormz on August 06, 2016, 09:10:13 PM
They were 128x128 originally. It's either the same problem with the image tags or they simply did not get saved, since when I went to my profile the link to my old avatar was no longer there.

Wow, this is kinda disorienting. Thankfully there's a couple of different style themes that you can use, but hard to say if any of them will match the simplicity of PHPBB.

Edit: Why the heck does does my IP show up on my posts

TFW I have to learn the forums again.

It's like I'm new again.

EDIT: I'm already missing the "unread posts", "new posts" and "my posts" links right on the index page, as well as the advanced search options.

This forum is weird and new and ugly and I don't like it.   :-X

Also, everyone looks fat in this new setup.   :-*

Actual, legitimate complaints and analysis
Wow.  Not sure how those Spoiler and YouTube codes got so mangled in the upgrade... not to mention image codes.  I don't know if I actually want to bother fixing every single one of my posts that use any of those... but I probably shoouuuld...

My main problem with it is that it breaks links to other topics from the previous forums.
And that.  I forgot about that.  And considering my "stuff" topics are absolutely riddled with internal links...  @_@  It's relatively-easy to fix though, I suppose.

Old internal link format

Just replace "viewtopic" with "index", "t=" with "topic=", "&p=" with ".msg", and "#p" with "#msg".  Simple as that!
"Simple"?  The heck am I saying...?
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!

Please read the first post. I am planning to try and fix the old posts but if you care about people seeing these posts in the mean time you can manually fix them and it shouldn't hurt the process.

Well that's what I plan on doing, or something like that. Problem is the database is gargantuan and I'm worried it might crash or take seven years to complete. When Shadoku gets on I'll talk it over wtih him.

As for the fat thing, the forum attempts to resize avatars using javascript. Be sure you have that enabled.
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!
Post by: Kapus on August 07, 2016, 02:11:38 AM
Lots of older posts seem to be borked, but that's getting looked into now so that's great. I think the change overall is good as it provides more style and personality to the forums.

One thing that irks me though is that there's less information shown on users in the posts. It feels rather empty with only the post count and a few icon links. We used to have locations in there as well as registration dates.
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!

We had something similar to locations in this but I guess they got removed.

You know what's misleading? The "<< previous next >>" links at the top and bottom of each page of a thread. They don't take you to the next page of a multi-page thread; no, they take you to completely different threads.

I don't like it.

EDIT: wait wtf how come Korby can have a location and nobody else can

Well, it was done for a reason and the problems are being looked at, so it should be fine.

The new logo is nice, but nostalgia leans me to prefer the previous logo.

All these years and still no twitch emote support outside of April Fools BabyRage

The forum doesn't look bad, to be honest. I've just been used to the old one for like 4 years, so this will take some getting used to. Might as well bring up a bullet list concerning old features, though.

Main pros: My avatar fits better, huge potential to joke about people having Standard Members

I personally liked the "personal text" deal as a substitute for location. It's become kind of a mainstay here on the board. Was that done away with or am I just blind?

EDIT: Matter of fact, I see Korby's got a "custom title" field containing his old location that I can't seem to find. Is that solely a moderator privilege or is that accessible to all?
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!

Didn't old Cutstuff have that, too?

EDIT: Apparently not. But I've encountered those buttons quite a few times on other forums before.
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!
Post by: CutmanMike on August 07, 2016, 12:12:32 PM
I had to turn the custom fields off temporarily because people were writing huge ones that were bleeding into the posts and that's no good. I'll see if I can bring it back later.

Keep the reports coming in, I will eventually get around to fixing everything! (And no we can't have the old forum back, sorry)

I'd like to have strikethrough and underline in the editor.

Additionally, the first button in the second row of the editor has no tooltip description:

What does it do?

Search seems to be quite iffy. When using "Search in topic subjects only" it often doesn't return any results, even when using words that most definitely appeared in titles - like "general" or "Roboenza".
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!
Post by: CutmanMike on August 07, 2016, 01:13:13 PM
It's the spoiler button, it should place two spoiler tags into your post. I can add underline/strike back.

As for the search, I can change the way it works but I need to read up on it more in case I give the search too much power.

Fixed. It was actually a typo of the mod but you probably won't believe it so let's just say that whacky CMM did a bad again.   :-*

It seems like avatars only work if the hosting URL has http and not https. That's kind of annoying.

Wacky Changes!

forums completely different, i have to get used to a new laptop and operating system, things have changed a lot really suddenly for me and my online experience

ALSO that HTTPS thing doesn't apply to images embedded into topic posts.
if you look at my art or 8bdm skins topics, both have (now) fixed images, even though they use the same HTTPS links

Though hopefully the "non-functional images until you edit each post" thing will be fixed some time soon

I had to turn the custom fields off temporarily because people were writing huge ones that were bleeding into the posts and that's no good. I'll see if I can bring it back later.

Maybe you could add something like
Code: [Select]
word-wrap: break-word;
to the CSS of whatever theme we end up using for that field of the side bar? That way we could also increase the limit again without any text intruding into the post area. (Makes you wonder why this theme doesn't have something that elementary to web design though ...)

Looks like text that was originally small on the old forums ended up being imported as big.

Kind of makes the tone of some old posts quite different, with things that were written in small now looking all shouty.

If you want to have the forums somewhat resemble how they used to be, head to your profile/Look and Layout.
Under current theme, switch it to Core. After that, the third checkbox should be "Use sidebar menus instead of dropdown menus when possible." make sure to enable that.

It won't exactly resemble the old site, but it should help some people with mild to severe cases of nostalgia for it.

[11:25:13 PM] Korby: if you actually think the new forums sux you should probably voice those complaints somewhere mike can hear them

hi I'm complaining now

+ The custom title whatevers (e.g. stand-in for location) have really low character limits... but Korby's stretches to two lines just fine. Also you're not allowed to use apostrophes; everything after an apostrophe is deleted. Try setting your title to Now I'm mad! and watch it only render as Now I'.
+ I still have an intense hatred for the previous/next buttons and their behavior of shunting you to different topics.
+ Previously noted, the Search function seems to have its own rules separate from the rules it gives you, making finding posts incredibly luck-based.
+ Minor gripe, a lot of the board topics still have really weird formatting errors, like "Topics will expire after 3 weeks of inactivity." Probably a discrepancy between PHPBB formatting and the current formatting, but still worth a mention.
+ WHY DO THE CUTMAN EMOTES USE CHARACTER SUBSTITUTION NOW. I have to manually disable smileys every time I want to stick three question marks next to each other and it sucks. Also a lot of them don't even make sense; :geeky: is called "embarrassed" and marked by :-[, but :ugeek: is "lips sealed" and triggered by :-X... what?

[11:19:13 PM] Thunderono: rt the logout button is fucking massive and also nowhere near your profile
[11:19:36 PM] Capsule J: I remember the next page buttons being in the bottom right
[11:19:51 PM] Capsule J: so I was confused when I'd hit next and then go to a completely different topic
[11:19:59 PM] Thunderono: yeah that's hit me a few times

Most of my other gripes are actually a result of the default forum layout options sucking hardcore. A few checkboxes change things back to (almost) normal, but the default settings make everything backwards and not make any sense. (For example: why would you ever want to show all of your Private Messages from separate users and with separate topics back to back like they were a giant forum thread ???????) If possible, I'd suggest actually changing the default settings for new users / users who haven't signed in yet, just to make things easier to grasp for everybody.

It's getting there, but not quite yet.
Title: It's alright?
Post by: *Alice on August 08, 2016, 05:44:21 PM

+ I still have an intense hatred for the previous/next buttons and their behavior of shunting you to different topics.

I already killed these buttons... unless you're using a different theme? I can do the same for that theme too I guess but originally I was going to kill off the other theme so I didn't have to keep tweaking each theme individually.

The fact everyone is so passionate about the custom text field actually triggers me (thank god I trained everyone to be ok with not having signatures from the beginning) but I will try to fix it.

Everything else I will look into. I still haven't created an index for the search. Not sure if that will fix searching but it that process will take a long time and give the server a bit of a beating.

As I said earlier, you could just extend the theme's CSS to word-wrap all sidebar text properly. That should be adequate layout protection.

And wow, even the built-in old and ugly theme doesn't have overflow protection CSS. WTF kind of amateurs did that?

SMF forums have a default set of smileys that, to my knowledge, you can't change, so Mike just substituted them with the ones he already had. This is also the reason why there is now a kiss smiley (he had to make one so there weren't 15 cutsmileys and an ugly default one). As far as I'm aware smileys always used character substitution in the old forum too, the only difference being it now replaces ":-X" instead of :"ugeek:".

Nevermind, Mike is a fucking ninja.

Medals are back! Although their layout is... weird for a few profiles. But Cool? I don't know. They should also now show up on your profile page if you're into that.

I had to manually enter each one in so let me know if I missed any! I think I got them all though.

Edit: Medals are back to not stacking, so you can only get one per category again  :ugeek: Also you won't be notified when you receive a medal anymore.
Title: Re: [ANNOUNCEMENT] New forum software - Please bear with us!

The medal layout seems to work fine for administrators and moderators, since their designation precedes their medals on their profile and thus appears on all of their posts. Ordinary users with at least one medal to their name receive a designation to that effect, and the associated medal is isolated on the top row. Ordinary users with no medals at all, needless to say, are designated as Standard Members and are unaffected.

In other words, if all other users received a forced Standard Member designation, I imagine that would fix the unusual medal layouts.

It probably wouldn't even be an issue if that extra row didn't elongate every post by users with more than one medal.

How exactly do I go about that is the question... Also can you change your primary group in your profile? I can't find permission settings for that.

Some of the contest medals like target blast and stuff seem to be missing

Ugh, look these people with all those fancy medals and I'm stuck with the lousy ProtoMan one.

So glad that we have unlimited messages, I hated how I had to delete a PM to make room for more, thanks for implementing that!

Hmm that is odd, they exist. You can see them if you go into your profiles, right?

Edit: Found the sneaky code that was blocking them.

Edit2: I think I fixed the weird positioning... time will tell.

Old forum links should be properly redirected now, and malformed links and images should be fixed as well.

Thank you so much, now I don't have to redo all the links in the wiki

Something... seems to have gone wacky with my Skins, Bots, Etc. topic.  Specifically, the message number seems to be missing from all but two four of my internal links...  But I don't know if that's because I'd edited the topic before this fix was implemented, or if something went weird on the forum software's end.

I'm just going to assume it was something I did, though, and fix this myself.  Thanks for implementing this redirect process, Shadoku!

The 'sent messages' in PMs doesn't seem to function at all and I don't think there's an Outbox

edit: ok i just found out you have to TURN SENT ITEMS ON or it won't do it
still no outbox though but I guess that's ok ignore me

Though on a similar topic... the Sent Items ("outbox") seems to be misbehaving all-the-same.  I'm pretty sure I did not send myself a congratulatory PM about becoming a forum mod, nor did I ask myself what stages Sakugarne is in.  :B

In other words, the "sent to" field in sent messages from the old forum is all goofed-up and frequently states the sender as the receiver (From: Joseph Collins; To: Joseph Collins), if not adding the sender next to the actual receiver (From: Joseph Collins; To: Joseph Collins, CutmanMike).

Edit: And on another related topic... you can see a member's post count in the Inbox/Sent view, as well as their custom text field, and both hang below the user's avatar rather than above.

Not much I can do about the old forum's content. As long as the messages are still there an in tact it should be fine.

Fixed the medals/layout display in PMs.
