User accounts and MM8BDM: What can we make of this?
« on: September 29, 2014, 05:17:52 PM »
So, Blazko mentioned something about Zandro 1.3 coming out soon, and I decided to search around the Zandronum forums, much to my surprise something potentially big caught my interest.

If I'm reading the alpha's patch notes correctly, there appears to be an online database for Zandronum which allows for storing data, as well as the addition of an optional user account system.

This all has me thinking, how could 8BDM take advantage of these new features? I'm not entirely sure how the database works, but if what few hunches I have of it are correct, this could open up a whole world of potential for modding. May it be statistics (Target Test records saving after a server closes?) or gametypes with long term progression of some sort.

What do the rest of you folks think of these new and upcoming features?

I was planning on making a thing that would show a player's kill/death ratio for like duel and stuff...statistics like that are fun to keep track of.

Another thing that would be interesting would be something akin to TF2's "strange" weapons. Server-clearing Spark Shock anyone??????

You mean to say it'll be soon possible to make a mod that allows players to retain their "level" and stats even after server resets?!

As soon as I saw this I thought of more accurate and balanced teams with collected match data so that a new or inexperienced player isn't given the same team weight as a skilled veteran. I'd imagine this would also make it easier to counteract odd playercount stack by simply balancing teams appropriately based on match statistics of skill and experience. This usually isn't a problem, but sometimes a lot of experienced players end up on one team and I think that this could be used to resolve that. Maybe I'm being hypercompetitive about it, but that's my take on it regardless.

Zandronum 1.3 was just released a few hours ago, and there certainly seems to be talk about a database and an account system. I might talk to Jenova later, as I might be able to make use of these for future mods, especially for Mega Man World.

hale
: healthy and strong

Full Definition of HALE

:  free from defect, disease, or infirmity :  sound; also :  retaining exceptional health and vigor <a hale and hearty old man>

Examples of HALE

<still hale and strong at 80, often outdoing his younger golfing buddies>

Of course you have to earn it.

___

I'm really not sure what to think about this. If tracking weapon kills is a thing, would we be able to reset our killcount, and would we be able to make it work with custom weapons?

Technically speaking, all of this is possible.

EDIT: Just gonna leave this here

[12:07:56 PM] Russel: ...this is really weird
[12:08:03 PM] Russel: It saves the value and all, but
[12:08:13 PM] Russel: the value is reset when the server is

Essentially the value appears to be set until the server is reset...which is kind of against the point. I didn't want to point this out on the Zandronum forums proper because I didn't know if I was doing something wrong; I even tried resetting the server in every possible way without closing it and it still worked. I know it's not an issue with my database connection because it was showing up on the logs on the test website.
I'll mess with it some more later, but I've done all I can think of.

im just waiting for personal accounts so nobody can impersonate anyone so no more confusion
EDIT: although the downside is that people might steal the names of other people before they have the chance to make an account  :ugeek:

Well this already has accounts on a testing server independent of Zandronum...when you're on a server you can type "login <username> <password>" to log into it and the player's in game name is independent from the username on the authentication server.

I'll cite my experiences as an example; my in-game name is Russel but my username on Charonauth's test site is LegoCS.

So wait, lemme get this straight; you can log onto accounts with zandronum, and with certain coding magic, we could potentially make it save your stats on certain things, items and stuff, and essentially make our own Megaman World.

I think I'm going to like this new zandronum.
