Title: The music thread
Post by: Nostalgia on February 17, 2012, 11:40:17 PM
Post music that you like to listen to or something

Here's a song I've been listening to:
(click to show/hide)

Also, just to clarify: If you remember the "Favourite Music Genre" poll from a while back, I'm not trying to double thread. This is just a thread to post music you like as opposed to stating your favorite genre

Eh. Once you realize that an artist's popularity (or how known he is) is virtually unrelated to quality, you'll get over that. Because popularity doesn't REALLY affect sound at all. (If you can't, well.... Go listen to more mainstream artists. Or what I post.)

Back in late October, me and Galaxy Sisbro began trying to revive AMP 2 by working on a single map together. What's so interesting is the way that we worked on the stage. I mean, you really don't notice how different a mapper's style is from yours until you've taken the time to scream at them over Skype for putting in tan Hard Man textures in the middle of what you think is supposed to be a dark cave. Where was I? Right, the differences. Galaxy and I also shared the music that we mapped alongside to. He picked music that I would instantly label as "generic electronic weeaboo crap". At least, it was something close to that. I picked this.

And yet, were Galaxy not so kind (or perhaps more informed), he could just as easily label your music "generic indie rock crap". Granted, Japan does have the tendency to produce some unsettling things in the music world (see goreshit above lol), but you have to figure: MM8BDM  is still based off a Japanese franchise. As such, music selected for custom maps would be easy fit if taken from things that sound like similar Japanese video games. Music that's designed to be part of an album/commercial release would have a different intent; it'd be a square peg. Whether or not listening to indie music over Japanese music signifies "better taste" is terribly subjective (and I'd be inclined to disagree). Having a strong taste I would argue is rooted in variety, since listening to a larger variety yields higher diversity. Across this thread I've tried to make each track posted in a different style. There are multiple commercial or 'mainstream' artists I could use in this thread but I don't because I'd rather expose people to something *more* different than what they're probably familiar with.

Honestly, it's greatly bugged me for a while that in order to be a "music fan" you have to listen to things like Radiohead or Animal Collective. Everyone I've met who claims to have good taste or interest in music all listen to that and it gets old. I don't really care what people listen to, as long as it's fresh. That's all I ask for!

Oh yes, and never diss edm. You might make some passing generalizations about Japanese music or what-not, but never against electronica.

If you want to see what I mean, try listening to this track. It's made in Japan, but (hopefully) unique in style.

@Red: Actually he's one of the "better" lolicore artists. (It is really hard to tell sometimes...) Nothing wrong, just a slight appreciation for speedcore or breakcore. Take your pick.

You don't really have to listen to those two artists to know about good music. I mean, I listened to lots of different artists before I finally got my hands on a Radiohead album. My taste in music didn't change much after I listened to them. I personally don't think it's necessary to listen to either band, but I highly recommend it, and that's what most people do. And I agree Tessaractal, this thread needs to display different kinds of music. If you find yourself listening to the same genre or artist, or you refuse to give another genre a chance like I did with Daniel, you'll never really be able to branch out and experience all the different music that this world has to offer. You never know what genre or band you'll end up liking next.

Well, not just Japanese EDM, but Japanese rock and hip-hop but any EDM would be great. EDM (and electronic music in general) has so many different styles it's virtually an entire hemisphere of music. Of course, I'm partial to Japanese EDM since I loathe Europeans since that's what started my own interest in music, but I've moved beyond that especially after realizing one things: many Japanese artists are influenced heavily by non-Japanese artists. (And it works in reverse, too.) And like you said - you never know what you'll like. So here's some hardstyle to try.

Death Grips are fantastic, by the way. And being somewhat familiar with classical music, I feel that Holst is a bit overrated - still great tracks, but there's much more interesting and powerful stuff out there.

You could look at Mendez's post, and join the army of pitchforkers. You could listen to a bunch of white dudes mumble incessantly over a guitar drone, and then talk with others about how sophisticated you are for being able to appreciate something so banal. (And maybe enjoy, too, if you convince yourself) MBV released a new album of that sort which is critically acclaimed - it's a great start to that sort of drawl. Hip Hop's at least got some sort of meaningful attitude behind it, for as long as you're willing to listen to those people's problems.

If you're bored of electronic, the best thing to do is really just to find a harder sound. It's easy to get bored if you've been exposed to nothing but pop-infused nonsense.
(click to show/hide)

Suppose it doesn't fancy you right away, you'll really have to explore as many different things as you can. I have issues with the lists like the one Mendez has posted. Why would anyone waste that much time listening to all that old music simply so they can claim to be entry level into a group's narrow tastes? Just looking at the "metal" column; I don't see any female, gothic, symphonic, or power metal in there at all. But is it really that hard to listen to a track by Nightwish? Or WT? Not at all, but you won't find anything near that sound - nothing comes close in /mu's thirty albums! And that's only a fraction of the list. When I see these sorts of lists I doubt anyone at the "entry level" has bothered to listen to it all, let alone half of it. Because there's no reason to. Nothing to gain, very little explored in these lists.

(That's not to say all in these lists are bad by any means. Surely some good albums can be found, but if you have to cherry-pick such a massive list, it kind of defeats the purpose to begin with.)
Title: as far as i know, that's what /mu/ essentials means
Post by: Red on February 12, 2013, 06:01:05 AM
i'm just going to say that that list is supposed to be the list of albums you need to listen in order to um, "fit" in /mu/, because those albums are the ones that are commonly discussed.
Title: Re: The music thread
Post by: Tesseractal on February 12, 2013, 06:55:10 AM
I realize that, but it still goes with what I'm saying - why fit into /mu/? I can't say it's really something desirable or even conducive to finding your own interests. You'll never find what you like by looking at someone else's tastes and saying "Yeah! I want to listen to that guy's stuff." It's preposterous. Because what music you like IS a reflection of yourself - so trying stuff just to be like someone else would in fact, make you a poser.

Of course, you could just listen to it anyway. But then you would ask yourself: Do I really with that? Am I just a salamander?:

Akai Koudan Zillion has some of the best SEGA-related music ever.
It was an anime based on SEGA laser tag pistols. Later on there were two games on the SEGA Master System which were based on the anime.
The SEGA Light Phaser (basically their counterpart to the NES Zapper) was based on the laser guns used in the anime.

All of the tracks from the anime and the first game are just amazing in my opinion. But posting them all would be too much.

Did I ever tell you guys about Jetsetrad.io (http://jetsetrad.io/)? I feel I should have. It's one of my favorite blogs that posts various genres of music. It's obviously based off of the upbeat and catchy music of Jet Set Radio, but it also manages to throw in some obscure tracks that sound amazing. For some reason, I can't get this particular song (http://jetsetrad.io/?p=670) out of my head.

I would like to see someone get through a Gentle Giant album and get into it on the first listen.

Seriously, they lie somewhere in between progressive rock and avant-garde music.

Seeing them live is cool though, because all the members are multi-instrumentalists and it's incredible seeing them switch between, say, violin to bass in some of their songs.

I've been on a HUGE Michael Jackson binge lately. I really started getting into his music since middle school. Ironically the last song I listened to just before he died was Thriller, which is probably one of my favorite songs by him. It wasn't until after he died that I learned what an amazing human being Michael was and how much he did for the world, it's inspiring really. When I grew up, I was always taught by my peers that he was this horrible person that molested kids, so it put me off on wanting to listen to his music until 7th grade. Now that I'm older, and looking shit up is as easy as 123, I can see that his sexual allegations were just bullshit made up by paranoid deranged people who saw a lawsuit as a money grab. The media did such a shit job on covering the 1993 and 2005 trials that it just ruined his reputation, making him seem like a weirdo outcast. Yes he loved kids, but not in a sexual manner that many thought he did (including myself at one point in time, I really regret that). Michael didn't have the ideal childhood as he worked most of his time in the Jackson 5, because of this, when he got older, he wanted kids all over the world to have the childhood Michael never got. He was just such an affectionate person who loved everyone, not just children. I'm glad he isn't remembered for those trials, but for the wonderful music he made and the fantastic person he was.

I originally didn't plan on writing all of this out, but as soon as I started typing, there was so much I wanted to say.

Here's a big list of music I've listened to lately:
(click to show/hide)

I hope I didn't miss too many songs. I tried to include what I wanted to, but yea no joke I could listen to just this list to the end of time. He was an outstanding talented artist, and there will never be another Michael Jackson, but I'm fine with that since his music will carry on for ages.

A piece of nostalgia a very old friend of mine gave me to listen to. I miss him quite a bit, so I listen to this often. Hopefully ya'll can enjoy it too.

Like a lot of people, i understimated this game because the graphism/details looked really simple but, when i started to see some videos, musics or even ost....i understood the point of this game and it's a videogames with a big soul and a deep story, and atmosphere, people could think, it's a just a cute dumb thing, but in fact, not at all.
Im not fan of RPG anymore but this one showed me how some games (even with all those nextgen stuff) can be still deep and have good melodies, not just orchestral themes with sounds of explosions.

I hope really for a Undertale 2 or something made by the same guy. It could be a little HD stuff, 16bits style, pixelart, remake or undertale 2, i have no idea, im sure he will continue because the concept of his game is awesome and the characters are awesome :3

Weezer has some pretty good music on this album, and it makes me wonder what the rest of their discography sounds like since this is the only album I have from them. If you've ever needed a motivational song, this is probably suited for you.

Bumping this topic for I have been a a Gorillaz binge recently. Their stuff is fucking amazing

This album has some hit and misses with me, but the hits are fucking amazing. Songs that stand out the most to me are Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, and 19-2000.

This is one of favorite albums of all time. I've been listening to this album since I was 10. The one song that stands out the most to me has to be Feel Good Inc. Other good ass songs on this album are Dirty Harry, Dare, Demon Days, Every Planet We Reach is Dead, and El Manana. The songs actually sound better when you go through the whole album from beginning to end. Demon Days is probably my favorite ending song to any album ever.

This is another really good album that you really have to experience it all to appreciate it. I never really liked it at first when it came out back in 2010, save for like 2-3 songs, then the album really grew on me recently. Songs that stand out to me the most are Stylo, Rhinestone Eyes, On Melancholy Hill, and Empire Ants. Other good ones are Plastic Beach, and Superfast Jellyfish.

As for The Fall's album, I never really got into it as nothing stood out to me. Other than that check this band out. They're in the works for a new album in 2016 and I"M HYPED AS FUCK.

One of my recent obsessions. I like how the music more or less contrasts with the super depressing lyrics.

Ahh fucking shit man, that video besides from being a neat tune, had scenes from an anime that came out last year that pretty much was a huge ass tribute to this 90s japanese punk band.

In honor of making me remember that radical anime, I'm posting the tune that was the OP for said anime.
