Recent Downtime (Feburary)
« on: February 22, 2015, 01:08:17 AM »
We recently experienced a bunch of issues with the forums, including redirecting problems and the forums taking too long to load (thus sometimes resulting in SQL errors). They should be fixed now. The PHPBB3 forum software was causing it for reasons we can't... quite explain, but it had something to do with the forum styles and they had to be reset. Either way, forum should be mostly stable now. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. Special thanks to Shadoku for figuring out the issue.

Please post here any other oddities/problems you notice as a result of this.

As I already mentioned in Anything Goes, the Board Index shortcut at the top left is gone. It's a shame, but still better than not using the forums at all!

Yeah, the Board Index and Current Board buttons are missing. Everything else seems pretty much fine.

Thanks for getting all this resolved, Shadoku and Mike.

I'm still getting the occasional "MySQL server has gone away [2006]" error every once in a while.

just now I tried to log in and it took way longer than usual and it got stuck
I f5'd and it took a bit again but then it let me log in

I'm gonna feel very embarassed if this is just my awful internet and not the site actually screwing up again
edit: now after browsing a bit more, it took even longer then just threw an error at my face

It's still a bit iffy on my end too, so I don't think it's just your internet being dumb.

It seems the lingering issues seem to be happening around midnight server-time. I've made a few more changes that might help.

If anyone has any more issues, could you copy the address of the page and the bottom line of the footer? ie:

Went to change my avatar and got an invalidation error. Tried again and it seemed to work, but this showed up at the bottom of the page.

That aside, I'm really glad the forums are back up. The downtime really made me realize how much I actually browse this place.

Uh... my "View unread posts" page just got swamped with loads of unread posts. It turns out that the unread posts go all the way back to November 2013 (!!!).

Annnnnd now I can't even view it anymore.

I'm working on the issue right now, hang tight.

Part of the problem seems to be something hammering the database server, I've temporarily added a one minute wait between searches to help alleviate this. I'll remove it when I track down and fix the root cause.
