Title: My opinion on the Mega Man series. Yours?
Post by: supersonicman10 on January 03, 2017, 03:53:05 PM
Mega Man (Classic) : The Mega Man Classic games are old-school and amazing. It's no wonder everyone likes em'. Sad that they didn't make an actual new classic Mega Man game in a while. No, Mega Man Legacy Collection doesn't count, it's just MM1-MM6 put together.

Mega Man X: It's also nice and fresh. More darker plot than the classic Mega Man games but lost it's touch after MMX6. Plus, not alot of people played Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2. Unless they wanted to play it on the go, but still.

Mega Man Legends: Funny and cartoonish. Nice but there's only 2 games of it and I don't count Misadventures of Tron Bonne as a Mega Man Legends game.

Mega Man Battle Network & Mega Man Star Force: For Battle Network, it had awesome songs and different ways to battle enemies. I liked it alot! Surprised it got 6 games though. As for Star Force, don't know much about it but never really cared about it. I heard that it's not that good.

Mega Man Zero & Mega Man ZX: I love it! It's a nice, fresh, but dark plotted game, even darker than Mega Man X! But I haven't really gotten too far into it so... yeah. :T

What are your opinions?

As a whole Mega Man is one of my favorite series if not my favorite:

Classic: Alright, simple yet challenging levels is what makes this one stand out more.

X: X gives you more mobility which makes the levels generally easier to travel through, but it opens up for actually making the enemies harder as a result since you can dodge more easily.

Zero/ZX: Darker and the difficulty was raised more, but that was more since melee was your primary thing and your range lacked in the raw power your melee had, so honestly the difficulty is about the same as X4/5/6 as Zero.
Legends: Much larger world to explore, and a good twist in gameplay.

BN: Wonderful new take on the series with a unique game play, being an RPG opens up for a larger world and more story telling.

SF: What X is to Classic but for BN, now the story is darker as a hole then BN was (and BN got pretty dark), the first game was a nice start to the series and while the battles seem less interesting they make up for it in nicer looking attacks and use of timing even more then BN did, SF2's story lacked a lot and was only there to introduce the new character Solo, but it improved the gameplay elements of SF1. SF3 got on track story wise and rivals the better BN games in that regard, while improving the gameplay even further, the Noise Forms are a wonderful mix of Styles from BN2/3 and the Tribe forms from SF2 (for reference SF1's forms were like Souls without the time limit, SF2 had them more like Cross's but you only got one, and you could mix them now (which requires having people with them on your friends list, you get a default one in game thankfully), SF3 took 2's versions and added a style change system while making the forms give both permanent bonuses and then fully formed bonuses, with the ability to mix them as well). So all in all SF is pretty good in my book.

Classic series wins hands down. The only X series game I can even think of touching would be X1, and only if I had absolutely nothing else to do. *Erases the 96s left on Super Mario World*

I'm super biased towards Classic and Battle Network games because they were my first exposures to the series, but I haven't played a sub-series yet that I've outright hated.

As far as I'm concerned Classic will never die. Fans keep making some pretty damn cool stuff with the formula, and while none of them have captivated me as much as MM9, I find the efforts admirable.

X has super exhilarating highs in X1, X4, X5, but I'll be damned if I ever find motivation to even gaze at X6 again. X2 and X3 just feel like useless attempts to make a sequel different for the sake of it being different, and I haven't played X7 or X8 yet. At its core, I think the X series has the most potential for an enriching, engrossing game with a lot of replay value. I just don't think there are enough games like that to really place it higher than others in my book.

I intend on replaying Zero 3 and 4 soon, but my opinion on the Zero series remains fairly positive. There's definitely some bullshit with how upgrades can be completely gated out for being bad at the game, but I don't think it outright breaks the experience. If anything, 100%-ing the Zero games seems like the most brutal, grueling challenge the franchise has to offer. Props for that.

I love ZX to death but I haven't gotten around to playing ZXA in-depth. It's been ok from what I've played, but the presentation is significantly uglier and the forms kinda lose their luster when there's 30 something ones of varied effectiveness instead of 6 or so highly detailed forms. Will get to a full playthrough sometime after I revisit Z3 and Z4.

Battle Network is arguably more hit or miss than the X series but in general I found the highs actually lived up to potential. BN3 is a brutal game with this expansive battle system that rewards both planning and execution, and the level of customization based on how you play the game is incredible. It was technically my first Mega Man game so there's bias there but I definitely would consider BN3 a must play for any Mega Man fan. BN2 is arguably more comfy than BN3, with some easier fights and less forcing you to play the game a specific way (two style slots, no forced NaviCust programs for story, etc), but I remember the feeling of legitimate rivalry with bosses like BeastMan and I can't help but edge in favor of 3.
BN5 and BN6 are both pretty good but I have to be in a specific mood to want to play them over BN2/BN3. They're more formulaic and the two-version nature of both games feels limiting.

Battle Network is a better series than Star Force. A 10/10 Battle Network game will always be better than a 10/10 Star Force game solely based on how much more the Battle Network engine can offer. That said, Star Force is still pretty fun. SF3 is an incredibly satisfying game for card collection, and the variety and intensity of the bosses and enemies always provided some sort of pressure to up your ante and be able to live up to whatever challenge approaches. Fun game, definitely one of my favorites in the franchise.
I assume SF1 is just less of the same? SF2 sucks.

Never played a Legends game, don't really know if I want to? They seem ok if a bit generic.

Favorites from each series are MM9, MMX5, Z2, ZX, BN3, SF3, with Mega Man 9 being my favorite game period.

I love Classic, though I feel like the "standard" best games are actually some of my lesser favorites--2 is probably my least favorite and 9 is somewhere in the middle. My absolute favorites are 7, &Bass, and especially 10. Would love to see something nice done with them, but Capcom seems more intent on progressively lazier ports.

My experience with the X series personally is limited to X1, and it really didn't grab me that much. I know more or less about the other games, I might give them a shot but the first game doesn't exactly set my standards too high. They're good, sure, but they feel less...memorable? Charming?

I have no experience with the Zero games, nor ZX.

I really like Legends 1, but I don't have much experience with Legends 2. I did get a PS3 recently, though...

I love Battle Network to death. I love the combat, I love the Battlechips and the strategy formed around them, I love the music and all the little intricacies, it's just so good. BN1 is miserable to play, though, and 4 is just as bad if you honestly intend on playing it more than once. 2 and 6 are my favorites. 3 is good, but not as much my speed, especially during FlameMan and the postgame. 5DS is honestly excellent, and one of the best ports of any game that I've seen. Now if only Capcom didn't keep so much of this franchise in Japan...

Star Force is pretty solidly "eh" to me. I really like the first game's plot, and how every sub-scenario ties together, even the more filler-y ones like Ophiuca and Scales. On the other hand, 2 and 3 completely undo every character's growth, and 2 is just...bad. I'm also not really fond of the cards in comparison to Battle Chips, I feel like the Chip Codes incentivise varying your strategy, while cards really...don't. Especially in 3, where the Noise mechanic turns the game into "throw the strongest Null cards you can." I like the refinements to the overworld system, though. Plus, I played Star Force 2 before any other Mega Man game, so...that sucks...

So I just beat Mega Man & Bass as Mega Man. So basically I've only beaten half of it as I didn't beat it with Bass yet. But either way...

I BEATEN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE MAIN CLASSIC MEGA MAN GAMES! MM1-10 and MMDWR-V (GB). internal scream

Classic: If capcom makes sequel to megaman, then god bless if it's this series, i really had a lot of fun with the classic series, specially MM7, I like the setting, I like the art style, I like the music, and it isn't a complicated mess, perfect for some simple fun.
X: I Know X kind of saved megaman, and that litteraly everyone in the planet worships this game, but i personally don't like it, Some stages look bland, The bosses are innecesarelly hard, and i really don't like how the game controls, This said, i credit the game for having a super cool soundtrack.
Zero: I only played Zero2 but i can tell you, this game is brutally hard, i can't give many details because i never got past any maverick thingie because all of them were too hard.
ZX: This one's pretty nice to play i only played the first game and got past the first boss but it's really fun!
Battle Network: If my Profile Pic, My username, and MM8BDM binds didn't tell you anything, I Love this series, 5 being my favourite out of them all. i like the battle system, i like the art style, i love the setting, i love the characters and i certainlly love the music.
Star Force: it may not be battle network, but it's just as fun as battle network, and i like how folder building isn't limited to what chip codes you have thanks to the new battle system, SF3 is the best.

Classic: I love the classic series. Strangely enough I started with the black sheep of the family (MM7) and worked my around in a strange order (I think 2, 3, 1 , 5, 4, 6). People crapped on Mega Man 7 but I love it to death (and consdiering it was the first Mega Man game I played growing up says alot). I always enjoy this series for the controls and classic nostalgia.  I learned alot of what I did about the Mega Man Series in general from 2 and 3. I need to get my hands on 9 and 10 as I missed that ship. Thankfully a Second Mega Man Legacy Collection includes those.

X: This is were i spent most of my time. I loved the X series and put more time into and effort into this. Folks say this series was harder, but I found the classic series harder

Zero: I played this series when I was in my teen. Wasn't bad though It's lower on my list compared to the Classic series. The lore was definitely more instersting to me when compared to X or the classic series.

Legends: This is absolutely my favorite series. Not too sure why. Alot of RPG elements included as well as 3D done right. I will yearly go back and play Legends 1 and 2.

ZX: I thought ZX1 was great, ZXA disappointed me but I am not entirely sure why as the core mechanics for ZX and Zero series were there.  I guess the whole concept of "Mega Men" sounded too cheesy for me.

Sure, I'll bite.

X: Only played Maverick Hunter X in full out of the main platformers, in addition to bits of X1-3. X Command Mission was what got me into the Mega Man series as a whole, with me thinking the NT Warrior TV show that was airing on 4Kids at the time was the same story as Command Mission. I found NT Warrior's theming to be way more interesting and started searching for more stuff labelled "Mega Man."
CLASSIC: The events above led me to the 15th anniversary collection on Game Cube, which introduced me to classic Mega Man. For those unaware, this collection contains Mega Man 1-8 and ports of the cooperative boss fighting arcade games Power Battle and Power Fighters. Through this game, I played a ton of the classics (admittedly with the weird B to jump, A to shoot mechanics I was already used to from Metroid Prime.) Mega Man 10 is probably my favorite game in the series because of how final it feels. It feels like a genuine attempt to wrap up the series as a whole and I really appreciate that. 3 and 4 are also really solid. I also appreciate 7, 8 and Bass for their different takes on the same formula.
BATTLE NETWORK: This is where I really got into the series. Because MegaMan.EXE was the poster boy for 15th anniversary Mega Man, I did a little research and eventually picked up the first Mega Man Battle Network on GBA. (Of course, I got it used from EB Games). I loved the first game so much that I played all the way down to the base of the Undernet and fought all of the game's bonus navis.
I don't think I would have the patience to do that again.
After finishing the first game, I looked up information about the other games in the series. I would constantly look up artwork of Mega Man fusing with other net navis, soul unisons and cross fusions and all that crap. I found this series captivating as a child. It wasn't for around a year after finishing Battle Network 1 that I was able to go to EB Games (or Game Stop, I don't remember. They were bought out anyway) and purchase Battle Network 3-6 all at once because that's what they had. They lacked 2, much to my dismay, but they had both versions of 6 so my brother and I both got copies of that to play through.
I really loved this series, with 6 being my absolute favorite.
Star Force: The thing I like a whole lot about this series is its setting. A distant future where the all technology relies on radio waves. Radioactive programs become sentient and life exists on other planets made of energy that can interact with the machines built in this time period.
It doesn't entirely make the most sense, but it's science fantasy so who gives a fuck? This Series Has Space Stands.
As far as gameplay is concerned it's basically trying to both simplify and one-up Battle Network and I whole-heartedly believe it accomplished both tasks. Especially as of SF3 because it improved on the system 1 and 2 set up that was already pretty solid. I liked this series a lot but lost my patience when trying to play 2 and got heavily distracted trying to play 3 so I lack experience there too.
ZX: Not a series I played as a child, and I never played ZXA, but holy shit this game. ZX1 has to be my absolute favorite Mega Man platformer thus far. It's got the non-linearity of a standard Mega Man title but it goes about it in an exploration style format. It even has character fusion systems! The same thing that got me so into Mega Man as a whole from the beginning! Its setting isn't as awesome to me as Star Force, but I still think it's super neat.

Mega Man is a cool series.

Megaman 7 was awesome. Difficult But Awesome takes a different meaning compared to the TV Tropes page. I like how they put in a few shoutouts to the NES series e.g. the fact you could freeze the flames in Turbo Man's stage just like you could in Fire Man's stage, then the Quick Man beams, and a lot of upgraded versions of classic enemies, although I think they should have had a weapons/boss archive in this game as opposed to Mash, especially since the battle was in the middle of a robot museum! The game also lacked a middle portion (beyond Mash) in that you went from 8 Robot Masters straight to the Wily stages, compared to Doc Robot, Dr. Cossack, Dark Man and Mr. X in the last four games; of course, that could have also been a shoutout to Megaman 1 and 2.

I also prefer MM7's art style over MM8/MM&B, as it was as close to the original drawings as they ever got - even the arcade games used this art style. With Megaman 8 I think they were trying to use a pseudo-3D art style simply so it didn't look like a 16-bit game on the next generation PlayStation/Saturn, and also the reason why they created Megaman Legends/64 so they could also have a true 3D game hybrid under their belt, as was the fashion at the time (Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, and the awful mess that was Bubsy 3D, never mind RPGs like Final Fantasy 7 and the like). With Megaman Battle & Chase, they even had a Mario Kart type game on the PlayStation although oddly it wasn't released in the US until Megaman X Collection came out on PS2 (why it was released in a compilation of X series games instead of Anniversary Collection is anyone's guess, but maybe they just wanted to fill up the DVD given that X Collection was much smaller on disc compared to Anniversary Collection).

The only annoying part of MM7 is that there is a lot of fake difficulty - charged buster shots only do 2 damage instead of 3 making it almost pointless being there (except for rescuing Beat from the cage, which for some reason is immune to everything else), some bosses stay invincible for way too long e.g. Spring Man and Slash Man, meanwhile your own invincibility timer is about half of what it was on the NES so you take hits quicker. There's also the retrograde step of only allowing 4 energy tanks when the last four games allowed up to 9. Of course, this could have been because they used the X engine and the 4 sub tanks simply became 4 energy tanks, going by the fact that the sub tank sound effect is played when you pick up an energy tank or an extra life, despite the X series having both the extra life and sub tank sound effects.
