Hello everyone, its Dr. Freeman and welcome to the fifth Cutstuff Mapping Jam! Another year has flown by and you know what? Now sounds like a pretty swell time to make some maps! 8BDM itself might be on a hiatus, but this jam keeps on trucking!

But wait! You may be asking! I have no idea what this even is and why are weird robot masters poorly edited over a Mario & Luigi game's artwork?
Well, I can answer the first question! The Cutstuff Mapping Jam is something that's been going on for a few years now, and it's pretty much when the community gets together to make some maps! Both newcomers and veterans are welcome as always! In fact, I definitely encourage anyone who has thought about mapping but hasn't actually tried to give it a shot here!

What are the rules this time around? As usual, we're working in two phases. The classic "make a piece" phase that hasn't really changed at all from the last 2 jams, and a new second phase!

Basically, everyone is going to make a map piece (more details below) and submit it to me. This map piece will pretty much act as your sign up. After two weeks of piece submissions, every mapper will be assigned two pieces belonging to someone else and will have to make a map with those pieces!
However, that is not all! This year, I have gathered a large list of words in a nifty little book (and by book, I mean text document). These words range from things like "Castle" and "Ocean" to more abstract things such as "Jump" or "Beam". Everyone will be assigned two words at random, and those words must be applied to the map in some way, shape, or form! It could be something obvious such as the texture set or the setting, or it could be something else like a stage hazard, a general aesthetic, or just about anything! If you can figure out a way to apply a word to the map that makes sense, I'll buy it!

However, we have plenty of time before we worry about the words. Lets' talk a little more about the pieces, as that is the first phase!

Spoiler for Hiden:
-Map Pieces can be no bigger than 1024x1024 units. This doesn't mean it has to be a perfect square. As long as it fits within those units.

-Keep textures simple. You aren't keeping these pieces anyway so don't go to town on aesthetics. Whoever gets your piece can do some of that!

-Pieces will be quality controlled and possibly rejected for the following reasons.

    The map piece is just a big empty square.
    Incredibly convoluted with a ton of 3D floors.
    It's straight up unplayable

If you have ANY concerns about your map piece as you're making it, please contact me and I'll do my best to help you out!


-Please refrain from adding scripts, weapons, and items to your piece. Adding a full fledged gimmick to a map piece is a little crazy, and weapons and items can easily be subject to change in the final map. People are also able to add their own gimmicks and whatnot to the map pieces when creating the final map.

For the second phase...

As said above, everyone will be assigned two words that must apply to their map in some way, shape, or form. This can be something obvious, or a more loose term. If you can give me a good explanation, even one that's cheeky, I'll likely be satisfied!

For an example, let's say I get the word "Breezy". That could mean some wind theme going on such as fans, or something similar to Cloud Man's stage. But, if you desired you could attribute that to a relaxing outdoors area that would be "breezy" to say. I'm going to play it rather loose with definitions so as long as you try something that makes sense, you should be fine. As long as there's SOMETHING there.

As always, if you're unsure when we get to that phase, just run it by me and I'll be sure to help clear things up!

And lastly, while these words can be a lot of things, I've limited to things that should be possible to make with core assets alone. Custom assets are completely and totally allowed, but not mandated. And I don't want anyone who is uncomfortable with working with custom assets to be forced to use them just because of a theme. So don't worry about that!

As said above, the way you sign up is by simply submitting your map piece! As soon as you do, you'll be all ready to dive into phase 2! It's important to note that if you don't make a map piece, you will be unable to participate in the full jam!

All map pieces are to be submitted to me either by PM or over Discord (You can find me at Freems#2222). Giving a healthy two weeks, all piece submissions will close on 11:59 EST on May 31st. At that point, we'll discuss phase 2, give out map pieces and words, and get to work!

Mm, seems to be the case. The video reference I used at the time when I looped everything also looped back to the beginning, so I incorrectly assumed that's just how the song went. But now I'm definitely seeing more sources with the real loop, so it'll be fixed.

A more extensive changelog is in the files as long as Slade didn't screw up my saving again. But it's this mostly a ton of bugfixes, plus it also adds 3 new maps to fill out the missing Jam1 numbers!

You reached the end of the campaign my man.
Roll only makes those requests if the Megaman? fights aren't recorded for whatever reason.

Of course, the story will continue into V6 and V7, but for now you've done all you can in the main story.

Jam is a rare event, requires direct collaboration, and limits freedoms with its gimmicks and time constraints. Its not really the place for a brand new mapper (especially if they are new to the community as well) to join in. CSCM is a good place for initial entry.

Not to mention various issues and drama.

Cool. I'm not here to argue against CSCM. I think it's incredibly outdated but if people want to put a map in it, that's a-ok. Would probably also make it less outdated as a result.

I am here to say however that Jam hasn't required direct collaboration since the 1st jam, the other 2 simply take map pieces ala FTM, just without the contest entry and people directly make the pieces. I don't know how much of a gimmick I'd call map pieces since from what I've seen a number of mappers work better when they have a base to begin with. Though Bond was more gimmicky than PBJ.

However, I do want to say the number of first time mappers that have showed up in all the jams so far. Jam 1 was the first time map for me, Gumball, Galactan, and I'm pretty sure Hilman (not 100% sure on that one). PBJ was a first time mapping for Ceridran. And the recent Jams Bond was the first map made by Jatea and while once again not his very first, it's the first completed map I've seen from Brash Buster as well.
So saying that Jam is not good for first time mappers isn't exactly true.

Also I would be interested in hearing what drama has arisen from Jam this whole time? Because I've heard absolutely nothing since I've run it. Though probably in a PM so this doesn't clutter the CSCM topic.

That said, I'm also +1ing Dog Man Remixed.

Alright everyone! Let's begin to talk about phase 2!
AKA: The part where everyone makes a map!

Everyone has been assigned two map pieces which will be listed at the bottom of this post and two assignments which will be PM'd to you over Discord since I think everyone who signed up has one. Your map can be just about whatever it is you want to be, but it must include both map pieces and both assignments have to be fulfilled.

A few clarifications and rules super quick.

-Obviously, map pieces and anything listed in assignments must be in playable space. Sticking a piece out a window and not actually using it in the layout is a big no. Likewise, if you're asked to put Air Shooter on the map (there are no weapon assignments, I'm just using it as an example) putting Air Shooter out the same window will have it not count.

-Map pieces can be adjusted to an extent. Sector heights can be changed, things can be added and changes such as changing stairs to a slope, adding some decoration or whatnot are all allowed. However, the piece must still have its basic structure intact. At the very least, the piece should still be recognizable!

-If a map piece happens to include a rule from one of your assignments, it will not count as having the assignment completed. If you were asked to put Air Shooter on the map and the piece had Air Shooter, it would not fulfill the assignment. You would have to place Air Shooter somewhere on the rest of your map.

-When it comes to music, as long as it's 8-bit in some form it is legal. Do not worry about creating a map card if you do not want to/don't know how. It's something I'll handle regardless come compiling.

-A map can be rejected if it fails to use its map pieces or follow its assignments, or if the quality is very, very poor. If you're super unsure about if you did anything right, PM me or send your map to some friends to get their opinion on it! This is no competition so outside help is completely legal!

-All maps will be due on Sunday, July 30th at 11:59 EST.

Anyone who submits a map will also receive a Cutstuff Enthusiast Medal!

So that's fun!

There's no real answer to Maestro. That's up for the player to decide. It's very unlikely that anything about him will ever be officially explained. It's all up to the players.

Hello everyone, it's Dr. Freeman and welcome to the fourth Cutstuff Mapping Jam! It's been a while since the last mapping anything, and with v5B just out the door, now seems like a great time to get another one of these out the door! Who knows, with the amount of time it's been since the last one we might even see some new mappers this time around!

In case you don't know what these jams are, to sum it up super super quick, there's a small gimmick of sorts and mappers get together to make a nice map pack! There's no real competition, just taking it chill and making some maps for fun!

So let's talk about what we have in store this time around. All in all, it's rather similar to the third mapping jam. It's been just under two years since our last jam so the concept isn't exactly something that's been done recently, and we're adding a little bit more to it than just the last jam!

Basically, everyone who wishes to participate will make a map piece (details of the map piece will be listed below) and PM it to me. Once that is all done, each person will be assigned two random map pieces that are not their own and must make a map that uses their map pieces. However, that is not all! Along with the map pieces, each person will receive two small assignments that must be in their map as well! These assignments will be small features that either add something to a map or make sure someone can't use something! Once again, more details on that in just a bit!

Along with the map pieces, everyone will receive two assignments they must follow while making their map! However, while this sounds really scary, these assignments are rather small in the grand scheme of things and aren't real threatening at all!

I have a small list of predetermined assignments, but what fun would it be if I got to come up with everything? If you're signing up, you are allowed to throw some suggestion assignments into the pool! This is not mandatory and there is no guarantee your assignments will end up going to a mapper, but if you have some idea, include it with your map piece!

Just for a quick guideline of what to expect.

Potential assignments might look like...
-Include at least one thunder claw peg (and thunder claw) on your map!
-Include a pair of teleporters (1 way or 2 way) on your map!


Things you will not see as an assignment...
-Only use [insert robot master here] textures!
-Make your map smaller than 2048x2048 units!


If you have any other questions regarding the assignments, please feel free to ask! The idea is that they're smaller things you add to the map and keep in mind rather than large things that completely alter the way you make the map


So what if you wanna sign up? You can say you're signing up in the topic, but that's not gonna get you officially signed up. Basically, sending in your map piece is when you are officially signed up and ready for the jam! You will be unable to participate if you do not make a map piece!

All map pieces (and assignments suggestions) are to be submitted to me via PM or Discord (you can contact me on Discord at Freems#4073) if you happen to have me in two weeks by 11:59 EST on June 10th! Once we reach that point, we will figure out map pieces and assignments and we'll talk future dates from there!

If your save data is after Mega Man 9's campaign, then you can talk to Magic Man in Light's Lab who can take you back to the beginning of the campaign (or any other chapter for that matter)
