My opinion on the Mega Man series. Yours?
« on: January 03, 2017, 03:53:05 PM »
Mega Man (Classic) : The Mega Man Classic games are old-school and amazing. It's no wonder everyone likes em'. Sad that they didn't make an actual new classic Mega Man game in a while. No, Mega Man Legacy Collection doesn't count, it's just MM1-MM6 put together.

Mega Man X: It's also nice and fresh. More darker plot than the classic Mega Man games but lost it's touch after MMX6. Plus, not alot of people played Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2. Unless they wanted to play it on the go, but still.

Mega Man Legends: Funny and cartoonish. Nice but there's only 2 games of it and I don't count Misadventures of Tron Bonne as a Mega Man Legends game.

Mega Man Battle Network & Mega Man Star Force: For Battle Network, it had awesome songs and different ways to battle enemies. I liked it alot! Surprised it got 6 games though. As for Star Force, don't know much about it but never really cared about it. I heard that it's not that good.

Mega Man Zero & Mega Man ZX: I love it! It's a nice, fresh, but dark plotted game, even darker than Mega Man X! But I haven't really gotten too far into it so... yeah. :T

What are your opinions?

As a whole Mega Man is one of my favorite series if not my favorite:

Classic: Alright, simple yet challenging levels is what makes this one stand out more.

X: X gives you more mobility which makes the levels generally easier to travel through, but it opens up for actually making the enemies harder as a result since you can dodge more easily.

Zero/ZX: Darker and the difficulty was raised more, but that was more since melee was your primary thing and your range lacked in the raw power your melee had, so honestly the difficulty is about the same as X4/5/6 as Zero.
Legends: Much larger world to explore, and a good twist in gameplay.

BN: Wonderful new take on the series with a unique game play, being an RPG opens up for a larger world and more story telling.

SF: What X is to Classic but for BN, now the story is darker as a hole then BN was (and BN got pretty dark), the first game was a nice start to the series and while the battles seem less interesting they make up for it in nicer looking attacks and use of timing even more then BN did, SF2's story lacked a lot and was only there to introduce the new character Solo, but it improved the gameplay elements of SF1. SF3 got on track story wise and rivals the better BN games in that regard, while improving the gameplay even further, the Noise Forms are a wonderful mix of Styles from BN2/3 and the Tribe forms from SF2 (for reference SF1's forms were like Souls without the time limit, SF2 had them more like Cross's but you only got one, and you could mix them now (which requires having people with them on your friends list, you get a default one in game thankfully), SF3 took 2's versions and added a style change system while making the forms give both permanent bonuses and then fully formed bonuses, with the ability to mix them as well). So all in all SF is pretty good in my book.

Classic series wins hands down. The only X series game I can even think of touching would be X1, and only if I had absolutely nothing else to do. *Erases the 96s left on Super Mario World*

I'm super biased towards Classic and Battle Network games because they were my first exposures to the series, but I haven't played a sub-series yet that I've outright hated.

As far as I'm concerned Classic will never die. Fans keep making some pretty damn cool stuff with the formula, and while none of them have captivated me as much as MM9, I find the efforts admirable.

X has super exhilarating highs in X1, X4, X5, but I'll be damned if I ever find motivation to even gaze at X6 again. X2 and X3 just feel like useless attempts to make a sequel different for the sake of it being different, and I haven't played X7 or X8 yet. At its core, I think the X series has the most potential for an enriching, engrossing game with a lot of replay value. I just don't think there are enough games like that to really place it higher than others in my book.

I intend on replaying Zero 3 and 4 soon, but my opinion on the Zero series remains fairly positive. There's definitely some bullshit with how upgrades can be completely gated out for being bad at the game, but I don't think it outright breaks the experience. If anything, 100%-ing the Zero games seems like the most brutal, grueling challenge the franchise has to offer. Props for that.

I love ZX to death but I haven't gotten around to playing ZXA in-depth. It's been ok from what I've played, but the presentation is significantly uglier and the forms kinda lose their luster when there's 30 something ones of varied effectiveness instead of 6 or so highly detailed forms. Will get to a full playthrough sometime after I revisit Z3 and Z4.

Battle Network is arguably more hit or miss than the X series but in general I found the highs actually lived up to potential. BN3 is a brutal game with this expansive battle system that rewards both planning and execution, and the level of customization based on how you play the game is incredible. It was technically my first Mega Man game so there's bias there but I definitely would consider BN3 a must play for any Mega Man fan. BN2 is arguably more comfy than BN3, with some easier fights and less forcing you to play the game a specific way (two style slots, no forced NaviCust programs for story, etc), but I remember the feeling of legitimate rivalry with bosses like BeastMan and I can't help but edge in favor of 3.
BN5 and BN6 are both pretty good but I have to be in a specific mood to want to play them over BN2/BN3. They're more formulaic and the two-version nature of both games feels limiting.

Battle Network is a better series than Star Force. A 10/10 Battle Network game will always be better than a 10/10 Star Force game solely based on how much more the Battle Network engine can offer. That said, Star Force is still pretty fun. SF3 is an incredibly satisfying game for card collection, and the variety and intensity of the bosses and enemies always provided some sort of pressure to up your ante and be able to live up to whatever challenge approaches. Fun game, definitely one of my favorites in the franchise.
I assume SF1 is just less of the same? SF2 sucks.

Never played a Legends game, don't really know if I want to? They seem ok if a bit generic.

Favorites from each series are MM9, MMX5, Z2, ZX, BN3, SF3, with Mega Man 9 being my favorite game period.

I love Classic, though I feel like the "standard" best games are actually some of my lesser favorites--2 is probably my least favorite and 9 is somewhere in the middle. My absolute favorites are 7, &Bass, and especially 10. Would love to see something nice done with them, but Capcom seems more intent on progressively lazier ports.

My experience with the X series personally is limited to X1, and it really didn't grab me that much. I know more or less about the other games, I might give them a shot but the first game doesn't exactly set my standards too high. They're good, sure, but they feel less...memorable? Charming?

I have no experience with the Zero games, nor ZX.

I really like Legends 1, but I don't have much experience with Legends 2. I did get a PS3 recently, though...

I love Battle Network to death. I love the combat, I love the Battlechips and the strategy formed around them, I love the music and all the little intricacies, it's just so good. BN1 is miserable to play, though, and 4 is just as bad if you honestly intend on playing it more than once. 2 and 6 are my favorites. 3 is good, but not as much my speed, especially during FlameMan and the postgame. 5DS is honestly excellent, and one of the best ports of any game that I've seen. Now if only Capcom didn't keep so much of this franchise in Japan...

Star Force is pretty solidly "eh" to me. I really like the first game's plot, and how every sub-scenario ties together, even the more filler-y ones like Ophiuca and Scales. On the other hand, 2 and 3 completely undo every character's growth, and 2 is just...bad. I'm also not really fond of the cards in comparison to Battle Chips, I feel like the Chip Codes incentivise varying your strategy, while cards really...don't. Especially in 3, where the Noise mechanic turns the game into "throw the strongest Null cards you can." I like the refinements to the overworld system, though. Plus, I played Star Force 2 before any other Mega Man game, so...that sucks...
