I don't mind not seeing Mega Man games for a while. A looooooong while.

I've already accepted this.

The Mega Man franchise has always been a niche franchise, not a hotseller. If CoJ thinks the franchise is not profitable anymore through games, I don't care.

We don't need Capcom for Mega Man games to exist.

I've already accepted this.

MegaMan Legends was a niche within a niche. It would never sell well at all, it was a scam to sell the 3DS to poor saps. MMU was an attempt to westernize the franchise, which failed to meet good expectations right off the bat. MML3 was Inafune's last whim against the soulless corporative mindset of CoJ's executives, grouping enough supporters to have a financially unplaned game in development. CoJ sees the franchise as, well, not huge, and games are just getting more expensive to develop these days, so...there you have it.

I've already accepted this, and this is how I choose to remember it.

I wish this topic to be locked, for it is beating a dead horse. Yes, just because of that. It's in our hands to keep the franchise alive in memories and tributes, period. And as far as I'm concerned, this doesn't need further discussion.

THANK YOU! Someone understands! Look, if I say "Sonic" or "Mario" in a conversation about video games, everybody knows who they are. I've had more times where I've said "Mega Man" and had people go "...who?" than I can count. It's simply not popular, and the perfect proof is that Capcom isn't making more games. I mean, my God, we're talking about the company that releases as many versions of Street Fighter as it possibly can and throws in ridiculous DLC to squeeze out every single penny it possibly can out of its franchises: if a series were popular, don't you think they'd be all over it?

EDIT:

I'd say 6 NES games was already milking enough.

Even if a video game company isn't producing any more games from any one series, I don't think that means it's dead. If you've got fans all over the place even after the so-called "passing away," then the series isn't necessarily gone. The games are still fun, people are willing to play them, and people are making fan games of their own! If anything, the series sounds alive and kickin' to me. I'm honestly glad Mega Man isn't ending up like Sonic; producing 1 or 2 games a year that end up being total crap, slowly but surely turning this once hot-selling series into a pitiful joke. At least things improved with Sonic Generations, but still...

There was a time Megaman was just as much a household name as mario or sonic, but Capcom killed that themselves by producing too many spinoff universes, each seeming to get worse with each installment especially in terms of the constant stress between keeping the series to it's roots and exploring non-formulaic new areas of gameplay with 'race' levels and other such trash. 9 and 10 were BRILLIANT because they went back to the real core of the game and delivered outstanding old-school appeal... but sadly the graphic whore generaton wants nothing to do with 8bit games no matter how amazingly tight it plays.

No franchise can really "die". Some examples of that are Konami's Sparkster, who managed a (bad) sequel after 16 years, or Nintendo's Kid Icarus, which got a (good, although very different) sequel after 21 years. However, I definitely see what you're saying, and it pains me to see Mega Man sitting on the same bench as Konami's Goemon. A lot of it has to do with Mega Man never making the next-gen jump like Sonic and Mario, and more recently, the departure of Keiji Inafune.

Personally, I was more than happy with the high quality of releases like Mega Man 9 and 10. As you can see with some of the above posters, there are many people who believe Mega Man had too many sequels, and do not appreciate titles like 4, 5, or 6. I think they're crazy for not wanting "more of the same", because I love how the games play and enjoy getting to see all the new Robot Masters, hear their music, see their stages and weapons. I feel like if you really want something different, that you should just seek out another game series. There's tons of them! And they have all kinds of different gameplay for you to enjoy! Why should Mega Man have to change? How is having quality releases year after year "ruining" a series?

Arguably, PStart, when they tried the jump, people yelled at them for the gigantc sprites and clunky, slow gameplay.

I found MM7 quite enjoyable, though. :( I've never played MM8 really, so I can't say much on that matter.

I just wish Capcom would keep their promises, though. I really don't care if they don't make new Mega Man games- I'm just pissed because they promise to make them, and they start, and then they pull a huge trollface and throw the progress away. Seriously- if you're not gonna make them, then stop saying you will.

About liking MM7, same here. In fact, I'd love to see more game in that style, since I love the concept art of the games, and 7's pretty much the closest any game has come to emulating that style.

But, in terms of jumping the gap from 8-bit to 16-bit, Capcom did do that. Mega Man X successfully changed up the series enough for a new generation, and was the perfect style game for the SNES. Even in the times of the Playstation, the X series continue to flourish since 2D games were still acceptable as a major release.

After the PS1 though is when Mega Man had trouble living on as a major brand. Legends, despite it's high quality, was not a blockbuster hit. The difference between Legends and the X or Classic series is too big of a gap, and so a lot of the old Mega Man fans were not on board for this "spin-off". While Mega Man did find huge success on the GBA with the Battle Network Series, he was never a big part of the Gamecube, PS2, or Xbox. The same goes for the next (current) gen, no break out hits on the Wii, PS3, or Xbox 360.

As for Capcom and their promises... not much can really be done about that. Capcom has and always will be a company, it doesn't have feelings and you could be as loyal as possible and it'd still step all over you. You can't really expect the PR guys to say "Mega Man is dead" because that would be like kicking out potential customers. So they sugar-coat it anyway they can and say "No current plans, but there's always hope!!" And it really isn't lying either; Capcom has and will continue to own the Mega Man franchise, and eventually we will see another Mega Man game. There's just no telling when, and how good it will be.

I found MM7 to be the best classic megaman game I've played (I've played them all except for MM9 and part of MM8) I don't know why they didn't keep that! You could buy everything at the shop or find it in the levels with Rush Search, you could get Rush Adaptors in the levels themselves (Search, Jet, Super), and the RM's weapons had more effects on the levels than in any other classic megaman game (Freeze Cracker in Cloudman's and Junkman's stage, Thunder Bolt in Junkman's? stage, etc.) Not to mention a VEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRY challenging final boss.

As for fangames carrying the Megaman name, I enjoy them, partly because I'm a Megaman fan, but mostly because they make very different Megaman games then what we're used to. No one thought Megaman as a FPS before MM8BDM. I like fangames because of the creativity of them.

Uh, Doc, you're right on T. Bolt. It also lit up the rooms slightly in Shade Man's stage.

I really think MM10 should've had MM7-styled version. It would've been so much cooler than just getting 8-bit again.

I think, MM9 and 10 werent so hard to make, but the musics are really awesome.

Anyways, im not happy for MMU/Legend 3 certainly because inafune left Capcom...but now it's Rockman Online who will be a mobile game only...

But i have the hope...they will make for us a new game with good musics again! I prefer to have a great megaman every 3 or 5 years than a bad megaman game with bad musics every year! :D

Let's hope.

and, there is so much megaman toys now o_O Maybe capcom want to make some megaman toys and goodies for now?

MM7 had a lot of nifty gimmicks and pretty animation, but it felt sooooo slooooow and I'm not at all a fan of any setup that doesn't give you 8 RMs to choose from right off the bat. I'd like to see a remake of 7 at the scale and movement speeds as MM&B... now THAT would be fun.
