Can't CAPCOM just make X9?
They've made enough X games without Inafune's consent to matter, and with all the Mario and not enough Metroid this year, it could sell very well.

It will be interesting to see when Capcom does finally get a new Mega Man project underway. Like you said, plenty of X games were made without Inafune's approval, or at the very least X6, so him being gone shouldn't stop them. But on the other hand, that was a time where X games were still selling big, and the last few received a lukewarm reception. Inafune's role as a produce certainly helped push certain Mega Man projects into development, so with him gone, who at Capcom is willing to take his place? It's not like other established producers at the company will do it; they have their own franchises to worry about (Resident Evil, Street Fighter, etc).

We might be waiting for some time before all the pieces of the puzzle come together.

They can? Yes.

They should? NO.

Mega Man games have NEVER sold well, EVER. Thinking they can sell well is dellusionary.

They are NOT blockbusters. They're as much of a blockbuster franchise nowadays (and back then) as Gradius or Bomberman.

Mega Man is a relic of a better past, not a healthy modern franchise.

R.I.P., Mega Man!

I think the thing I like most about this topic is the title's similarity to "Rockman 3: The End of Dr. Wily!?". I dunno if that was intentional or not, but it's making me think it should be Mega Man 11's official subtitle

I think if Mega Man games will continue to be made, they'd only be small downloadable projects much like 9 and 10 which would be fine by me. 9 apparently sold decently enough for a downloadable title for 10 to be made, at least. I mean, X2 was just released on Virtual Console and X was released on iPhone so there could be a market for cheap releases. Even then, though, I wouldn't hold my breath nor do I expect any more of these games in the future: I'm just saying IF there is a future, that's what it would be. I highly doubt a full fledged console release will ever happen.

I agree, and it's because having 2D platformers as anything besides a digital download or a portable game is taboo. I don't feel I can blame this on the game companies though, because I've seen plenty of people post online about how they wouldn't think about paying full price for a "2D" game, that they would rather wait until it eventually hits the bargain bin. The mindset is that 2D games are not as expansive as 3D, that it's literally missing a whole dimension which all games should have in this generation.

If there is going to be a major Mega Man release, it would be a reboot, a retelling, a transformation of the series into something that does work in 3D. Not something like Legends, but more of a merging of the X series' run and gun action with all the trimmings of 3rd person shooters you see today. That would be a very ambitious effort on Capcom's part, but it's totally in the realm of possibility.

WiiU already has a number of major 2D titles coming to it though, so maybe we could see a major 2D platformer Mega Man release.

I think Capcom actually saved the franchise. If they saturated the market with 1 game per year, we would have the same game every time. It's basically the same as 4-6, it's the same game with new bosses, every year.
I don't mind if they wait another 10 years to make another one, beacuse if they do, it'll be different.
I also agree with Musashi, MML had a fanbase which seemed bigger that what it actually was, and making a game would be a loss for Capcom, no matter what.
Stonefunk, you can't value a game over a wife, or a life. It's just a game, and if it dies, deal with it, life goes on.

This, 2421 times this!!
Specially the last part. Get a life.

If we get a game each year, then they're gonna run out of names.
This is so yes.

I know, I'm replying to the first page leading to the 3rd

Im pretty sure megaman 9 wasnt sell so bad compared to Street fighter 4. I have seen the sales in japan first year, the classic and X were pretty good for the past, not like sonic and mario but it's one of the best serie who was sold!
And yes, capcom can, but they dont want cause it's not logic for a strategic company (money money).

See the console of SNK....they have a lot of the best arcade game ever but it crashed (yes, the games and the console were too much expensive anyways...)

And the "not really good" sales of mmZXA, star force 3 and EXE operate shoooting star make capcom scared (really more).

I hope they will find something to make us happy.....Rockman Online was a good thing, i didnt understand why they want put this game now on mobile game only.....!!!! Im pretty sure, it can be sold really well in Korea... :/

We need to be not so much "hard" with capcom, if a game can be done (except with bad box art), we must be positive!

Operation Shooting Star was a flop, they did a bad job on it, it was just Battle Network 1 with more scenes to add Ryusei Rockman, who outclassed EXE because he had all his powers from SF. The game didn't even make it over seas.

SF3 was an amazing game over the first two.
A third ZX game would be good because they teased us with main characters for one about a year after Advent.
Street Fighter 4 sold better due to being a disk game of course, and more people know Street Fighter over Megaman.

Also stop bringing up Online, its not being made in Japan, its a KOREAN game. We all know how well licensed Megaman games go for translation. *looks at both PC games, Challenger from the Future and Strategy*

Street Fighter 4 (PS3, 360): 3.1 million units by March of 2011.

Mega Man 9 (WiiWare, PS3, 360): Estimated at 250k units as of January 2009.

NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Stop trying to make the Mega Man franchise sound off as a blockbuster hot seller, or even half decent compared to real blockbuster franchises. It's not, get it through and over your thick skull. Baseless hopes.
