Title: Toids 'Я' Us: [v6 UPDATE] HUDBall v2a (MM8BDM v6a) & Bonus MMV Music
Post by: Gumballtoid on May 31, 2017, 05:31:13 PM
HUDBall
Disclaimer: not an actual ball

I wanted to make a custom HUD, and this is the result.

This HUD is incompatible with classes and it always will be. Sue me.

(click to show/hide)

So what's this thing all about?
• Health and ammo bars, weapon icons, and inventory items now occupy a stylized window in the top left corner.
• Bars are accompanied by numbers that indicate exactly how much health or ammo remains. Fancy!
• Weapon names are printed underneath the ammo bar. Now Air Shooter and Dive Missile don't feel so same-y!
• Features a color-changing mugshot that reflects the currently-equipped weapon (yes, charge weapons work too).
• Improved weapon ammo overlays: things like Centaur Flash now visibly go on cooldown, etc.
• Rush Jet and Rush Marine are represented by meters, while Beat Support embellishes your crosshair while active.

What's new in the latest version? (11.15.2020)
• Support for MM8BDM v6! This includes MM10 and MMV weapons, plus changes to pre-existing content.
• Support for two additional colors! This will allow those extra-detailed mugshots to be adapted much more easily. Details in the spoiler below.
• A slightly streamlined frame! A bit of unnecessary garnish was trimmed to cut down on clutter.
• Color overhaul! Every weapon has been glossed over and given a (hopefully) much prettier palette.
• Font changes! The font is now much more authentic, being drawn from the pause menus of MM4, MM5, and MM6.
• A new Beat Support indicator! Tiny crosshair feathers will now indicate the presence (or lack thereof) of your winged companion.
• Team game changes! Your allegiance is now represented by a small banner, rather than a colorized frame.
• Full campaign support! Play through the entire campaign with your beautiful new HUD (albeit without boss mugshots, for the time being).
• ...and other small, quality-of-life changes that are too numerous for me to list!

Download link, please!
Current version: v2a
• HUDBall (https://www.dropbox.com/s/zfmlqfrudyiv17a/hudball-v2a.wad?dl=1)
This is the basic, multiplayer version. It may be placed inside your MM8BDM pk3, allowing you to join servers with your shiny new HUD!
v2 UPDATE: Now fully campaign-compatible! HUDBall SP deprecated until further notice.

How do I install this thing?
• To play offline, you need only load it as an add-on using the MM8BDM launcher.
• To join multiplayer servers, follow these instructions:
IMPORTANT: If using Doomseeker, be sure that "Check the integrity of local WADs" (under Options > Configure > File Paths) is unchecked. Otherwise, you won't be able to join servers with a modified MM8BDM pk3.

How do I add my own custom mugshot?

Have fun! Feedback and bug reports are welcome and encouraged.

(Diet) Mega Man V 2A03 Music Pack

MM8BDM v6 included most of IsabelleChiming's Mega Man V 2A03 album (https://isabellechiming.bandcamp.com/album/mega-man-v-gb-2a03-soundtrack-remake), but 8 songs were omitted, and one was slightly altered. These are available here.

As with all music packs, simply drop it into your skins folder and you're good to go.

I can't test it yet, but by what I can see, I can tell this is neat and a good idea. The only weird thing I saw here is that the Silver Tommahawk's HUD is shown as green in the pictures.

As much as I love classic Megaman-style, I prefer having specific information displayed to me if I can help it, so I'll definitely try this out when I have time. Looks neat!

This is deliberate. You'll notice in the given screenshot that it is a team game, and the player is on the Cossack team, represented by the green mugshot.

If someone wanted to make this classes compatable, would you be willing to give them permission?
Title: Re: [HUD] HUDBall - MM8BDM v5b

I would prefer if that didn't happen. I've had issues with a million different versions of my work floating around (without my permission) after the community felt the need to modify it and it just kind of lost its identity as a result.

Put simply: no, I would not.

i like this a lot but
i'm wondering if you could make a 'minimalist' version with the mugshot removed and the weapon/item icons shoved up there
cuz while it's cute and all it's pretty big and a mugshot doesn't really give me any more information considering the weapon name, bar, icon, and buster itself already show me what weapon i'm using

if not i'll just be 'inspired' to make a personal smaller hud for myself i guess

I'll definitely do that once Zandronum SBARINFO supports IfCVarInt, so as to avoid maintaining several permutations of the HUD at once, but if there's enough demand for it, I'll do it sooner.

Simply having hudball.wad in your MM8BDM directory is not enough. You will need to load it as an extra parameter using the MM8BDM launcher. To use this HUD online, you'll need place hudball.wad inside MM8BDM-v5b.pk3 using Slade (http://slade.mancubus.net/). For details, see the first post.

Hope this helps.

...and shortly thereafter, I had to put out a hotfix that hopefully solves the occasional crashes I experienced online. If you downloaded HUDBall before, I ask that you do so again.

Also, the screenshots have been updated! Have a look.

I'd imagine if V7 comes out, there will be a Stardroids team in multiplayer, and there will be two songs used, for victory and losing, obviously. I think the "Space Rulers" should be the victory theme, unless it will also be used in the campaign mode, in which case, the "Weapon Get" theme should be the victory theme, whereas the losing theme should be the "Game Over" theme.

The idea of a Stardroid team was tossed around when the old team colors were being revamped, alongside a returning Mr. X team. Lots of folks were up for it. Unfortunately, it won't be possible until the Zandronum devs decide TEAMINFO should be able to support more than four teams.

Personally, I'd use the Password theme for victory and Game Over for defeat. Space Rulers is ominous and imposing, but it doesn't really sound... victorious. Glad you're enjoying the pack, though!

Oh man, it's a HUDBall update!

I'm quite pleased with this one--HUDBall now features compatibility with Rage Roboenza mode! See the front post for details.

It's funny you should ask--I have one very nearly finished!

Hudball SP will need to wait, since there are a few experimental things I want to try with that, but the base version will be fully compatible with the campaign (albeit without boss mugshots).

The deed is done! See the front post for details.

For the time being, HUDBall SP is no longer supported. I'll probably revisit it at a later time, but there are a handful of things I want to try on top of simply adding boss mugshots (besides, maintaining multiple permutations of the mod is a pain).

Since IsabelleChiming's MMV music is now officially part of the game, I have retired the MMV music pack as well.

if you do pick up hudball-sp again, id say to wait until a v6b comes out, since people in the discord were talking about it

Aww, you could have just cut it down into a "light" version containing just the tracks that didn't make it into the core, including the slower version of Neptune's stage theme and the looped ending theme.

Mind if I upload the HUDBall file to TSPG (The Sentinel's Playground)? The reason i'm asking is due to doomseeker having problems with using modified files.

Uploading it to TSPG will do you no good unless the server itself is going to run it (which players may not appreciate).

I suspect you're having the same problem that had me tearing my hair out while updating this thing. I put a note about it in the installation guide:
Quote
IMPORTANT: If using Doomseeker, be sure that "Check the integrity of local WADs" (under Options > Configure > File Paths) is unchecked. Otherwise, you won't be able to join servers with a modified MM8BDM pk3.

Now that skins can have mugshots, will HUDBall be updated to use those instead of a singular set image?

The short answer is: yes, but it will work like the base game, where only Maestro changes colors.

The long answer is: due to the myriad mod-centric changes that came with v6b, Hudball is going to fundamentally change. While not among the foremost or most drastic changes, mugshots are affected as well. Going forward, we (myself and a prolific member of the community who offered his expertise) can either support static, skin-based mugshots (and color-changing Maestro), or a single color-changing mugshot designated by the player, but not both. Being that the dev team went to such lengths to incorporate the former into the base game, that's what we ultimately decided to go with.

I may or may not go into greater detail at a later juncture. There's no ETA on the new version yet because the burnout is real.
