Finish that map! What does this mean? For this mapping competition I provide everyone a wad (in both hexen and udmf formats, your choice) containing the above layout pieces. Your goal is to finish the map while making use of the provided sections. Of course, the sections have to be on the map or your entry is null. It will be interesting to see different takes on the same pieces of level. This level has no default music, no textures whatsoever or anything other than the layout itself. I didn't wish to influence any aesthetics. It does have a simple piece of mapinfo though!

Maps are due April 8th

Enough talk, have rules!

What can I do with the layout?

What can I not do with the layout?
These rules are subject to change.

Cool, so how is this being judged? Simple! We're going to be playing deathmatch on these maps, and the community will spam my inbox with PMs containing their votes afterwards. Voting will be done based on the community opinion and my (and any other judge) votes. There will be three places, one medal winner and two runner ups. I will be deciding on my two additional judges at a later date.

(http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge17.gif)First place is determined by top winner of the judge and community votes
(http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge17-RU.png)One runner up decided purely by the judge votes

I unfortunately won't be able to make time in my schedule to finish this with the ambition I wanted to put into this. This week and the next are overwhelmingly tight for me and I'll have almost no time to work on my map as a result.

Sorry, but I have to drop out.

So about voting. Just go send me a PM. You can vote for two maps. One best map, one runner up pick. Pretty simple??? Best map is worth 2 points, runner up is worth 1 point. Judges (myself, Mess and Celebi) are worth 3 points. So have a blast. I cleaned my inbox just for the occasion. :ugeek:

Oh, and just a reminder. When casting your vote, you are just looking for the best map in general, but also keep in note the point of this competition. What map had the best use of the provided pieces.

Voting ends by Monday at the latest. Could be earlier if I stopped getting votes.

Thanks for the feedback, but you didn't actually point out any problems with my map in your critique. I would really appreciate it if you could name the issues so I can improve upon it next time I make a map.

I absolutely love the flow and love put into Knux's map. It's a blast to play on, and it embodies what it was meant to represent perfectly. Out of all seven, this one had the most charm to me and as such I voted for it.

JC's map was pretty good, it just didn't really stand out as much as the other ones.

Rozark's map was also pretty good and looked really nice. I just felt some of the other entries flowed more nicely.

Shade's map is a lot of fun to play on and displayed a very innovative way of looking at the central room piece.

FGG, this is honestly a really good map. It flows nicely, and the conveyor room is pretty fun. I can't help but feel like it's missing a piece of the puzzle, though.

While Sword Man and Freeze Man textures have both been done to death, I really liked Mystery Contestant's usage of the two together and found the frozen lava room outright stunning when I first walked into it.

Woohoo's map flows fine, it just feels a little bit...plain? It doesn't really offer much that wowed me, and instead felt a little more like the three pieces with a slight amount of meat filled into them. Under any other circumstance that's not a bad thing, but I felt a little put off by it here.

Smash's map is beautiful and it needs to win 20 oscars right this instant

If you mean the "corner room"/left room it is there, all three pieces are actually still in the same order from each other.
But, cause I like doing stuff like this, and to remove any doubt, I took a screenshot of the auto-map and colored it in to represent the sections.

Red is provided areas playable. Purple is added playable areas. Yellow is added non-accessible areas. Grey is pillars.

Llama, I wouldn't have accepted the map in the first place if it was missing a piece. That would of made it illegal. Although I will say, Rozark and Shade had the left most piece blend in the most. Both those maps had a lot of me running around going "Where is it?"

Come on guys, gals, whatever pronoun you prefer, get those votes in, we put a lot of work into these maps and it is rather sad to hear how many votes he has atm. It is reasons like this that it is hard to finish map packs and expansions, because no one seemingly cares enough about people's maps to give feedback, or even vote in a compo, which dis-ways some of our mappers.
Having our mappers feel good about making maps by showing a little effort to care enough to encourage them to make more maps means more maps for other game modes, like Saxton Hale *cough*, Roboenza, the forgotten Bot Apoc, Chaos Gen, and hell even Screw Scramble. Note how CSCMs took forever to update for V3?

Have we even gotten a server for this yet? I haven't seen any, and it would definitely be easier to vote if we can naturally experience the maps with a bunch of people, instead of skimming over it in solo.

Get a server today, get everyone together, have some genuine feedback.  :|

And now, all you mega man fans. It's time to announce the winner of the first Finish that Map competition!

Now for boring technicalities, medals will be awarded when Mike gets on. Priority goes: Grand Prize (community + judge vote), then community runner up, then judge runner up. When a map wins a category, it is eliminated from winning again, even if it wins another category.

So with that out of the way, the winners!

Thanks everyone for the votes, I really appreciate it.
Now to go throw the map in Rozpack Expansion I, coming ????.

But uh, what exactly do you mean by "When a map wins a category"?
Title: Re: Finish that Map! -Results are in!-
Post by: Knux on April 15, 2014, 01:52:38 AM
Basically, when a map was decided to win one category, it's prevented from winning the others. Otherwise, you would've won all three.

Thanks everyone for your support! I'm happy I won something, but feedback on the map is very welcome too!
