Its not really easy if you dont know how to use gimp-tools pretty good.

I make my ones with Animake.

Both work just fine. Even animated GIFs work here.

Looks like I finally got myself an animated avatar now, thank you tutorial. You know, I actually thought it was something really convoluted to get the gifs as an avatar.
