Question: If they follow a similar theme of another CTF map, will it be rejected? No, but I would prefer uniqueness.
Question: Are you allowed to team up with someone? You can get all the help you want, but only one person who submitted the map can earn the medals
Are 4-Team CTF Maps Ok?
Quote from: "Human Destroyer"Question: Are you allowed to team up with someone? You can get all the help you want, but only one person who submitted the map can earn the medals
You would get the medal for making and submitting the map. SmashBro would get nothing. (Or at least, that's what I assume)
(Of course, it IS Smash, so eh)
Quote from: "Human Destroyer"(Of course, it IS Smash, so eh)
That sounds somewhat degrading.
You can't exactly pick up a flag with Flame Blasts all over it, and they're flat out OP for a carrier running away.I didn't even think of the shooting them at the flag. Shouldn't Danger Wrap be on the list too then?
(http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k553/IvoryBarrier/MM8BDM/CTFLove.png)Took me a while to notice Hard Man was crying.
It's not fair to everybody else that a person could get the exact same medal for doing work on only half a map that everyone else would for doing work on a full map.Why can't I just get HALF the medals for doing HALF the work?

HD can have Cement Man, just give me Proto Man!
Yes, I was intending for players to occupy a space of about 1.6 squares; one square would be a small / skinny platform like the edges of Blizzard Man's boat, whereas two squares would be a "comfortable" area for a player, like the large floating ice blocks on that same map.
Fun fact: That's actually the exact same scale as Doom Builder's default grid. [/themoreyouknow]

I hope I will have some time, cause I dont know how to make a map.
I will participate conditional.
Can someone explain me what this rules mean: (there is a <- this)Quote•You must sign up before submitting a map.

Whose gonna judge'em? CMM and Rose again? Secert ballot? Korby, Ivory, and CMM?
Everyone who signed up is then allowed to vote for which map they think is the best, and which maps they would like to see in MM8BDM.What if everyone ends up voting for their own maps or something like that? >_>
The hardest part of mappin' to me is to conquer laziness. Since this compo has no limit of folks joinin', why not take up a spot? Why's my name not on the list? I signed up, didn't I?
Time to clarify:
When I said 3 routes to the flags, I don't mean into the flag room itself. Look at examples like Edge of the Dam. There are 3 general routes you can take to get across. That's what I meant.
You said no custom textures... but do skyboxes count as "textures"?I don't think we need a red / blue sky for team bases.
No new actors or weapons
Vanilla Textures only, you are free to recolor them if you need red/blue variations. So it's limited to only blue/red recolors?
New Rule Update:What about I-IV edits? Not that I'd need them, my maps almost done already.
You are now permitted to use custom textures so long as they are from MM1-10 or &Bass. No custom textures from scratch, no DOS or MMV textures. Only from those games. Fair enough?
Well except MM8. We can't be handing those ones out.
[*]You may use custom textures from MM1-10, &bass, or recolor existing textures to use in the light/wily bases. No other custom textures are permitted. (Minus MM8)
DOES IT HAVE TO 8 BITSCustom Music is optional, but will not be judged
... I just figured out what Ivory meant by "four blizzard blocks".Distance travelled is a more important element to consider than time. Mendez's average time taken to get from one flag to the other was 30-35 seconds. Traps in CTF05 increase the length of time getting the flag without changing the size. Which is why a size cap is important. (Maps can be too small, too. 06 is a classic example of CTF mapping failure. If it was submitted at this time I doubt it would be accepted.)
Holy crap 6000 units is HUUUUGE!! I probably won't even need HALF of that!
Another question: Where's the textures stuff for 9, 10, and Bass? I'm not really intending to use custom textures, as I'm going to vanilla stuff.R&F textures have been ripped by NemZ. CopShowGuy has ripped Endless textures from 9 and 10. Splash Woman textures can be found in Ryuga Knight's map pack. TBG pack has used some of the endless textures and has a few texture recolors in his map pack; X-pack contains Needle Man recolors. You can probably find any stage from 9 and 10 at vgmaps.com if you want to go the long way. If you want a cool skybox, look at the "sunset" skybox used in official target maps.
Whats a good number of seconds it should take to get from one flag to the other taking the shortest path and not getting hit? The vanilla maps seem to be from 10-15 seconds with the exception of Ice Base which was about 8-9.Savior and I worked around with the idea of how long the quickest route should take. Our estimates say the sweet spot is somewhere between 15-18 seconds from one flag to another. Of course, you would have to consider that rarely do people go on such a fast run unless they were playing classes CTF. What's more, they would get deservedly pummeled for taking such a quick run if they encountered an opponent with a powerful weapon.

Truth be told, you should be worrying more about weapon layout than general layout. Focus on giving each weapon a significant purpose, rather than placing a weapon there for the sake of placing it there. Simple example is placing Search Snake on a map with a lot of height variation, or Yamato Spear for those long & narrow corridors.
And then you have to consider weapon tiers, and how people will tend to stick to a stronger weapon even if the weapon doesn't work for all situations. Best example I can come up with is Knight Crush in Ice Base. Sure, you have water wave and air shooter there, but such a powerful and convenient weapon as Knight Crush makes the rest of the weapon layout seem null. I dare you to tell me that Crash Bomb gets more kills in that map than Knight Crush.
God dammit i was going to use that in a map of my own later down the road, but since everybody is posting there song... why not i post the one i am going to use(click to show/hide)
No, it won't be a space map.
That should so totally replace the song being used in Woodman's Revenge instead.Quote from: "LlamaHombre"God dammit i was going to use that in a map of my own later down the road, but since everybody is posting there song... why not i post the one i am going to use(click to show/hide)

Can there be large amounts of flat area? My Yamatoman themed map seems to have them, although there's another CTF map that was mostly flat (it was the sea base one).
That reminds me, I should make the lower gravity room use not-as-intense low gravity in CTF05. Either that, or just scrap the room and copy and paste the new lava room over there.Personally I think maybe an extra path through the grav rooms would touch it up, I didn't know about the paths on the far side for a while and I don't think many other people know about them either. Other then that Clockwork Factory is my favorite Vanilla CTF Map.

Should we add a Yasichi to the map?CTF Maps don't require them, so it's up to you.
I pray to god that you don't get your mind screwed over by what I included.
I'm planning on using the Yoku Blocks in a part of the map I'm making. Am I allowed to do so and, if so, can I make a re-textured one?
Quote from: "DarkAura"I'm planning on using the Yoku Blocks in a part of the map I'm making. Am I allowed to do so and, if so, can I make a re-textured one?
You can use them, but like I said before, this is supposed to be for the vanilla game, and part of being vanilla is working with what MM8BDM already offers.
Could blue and red be traded out for plenty of signs letting you know which side you are on?
Could blue and red be traded out for plenty of signs letting you know which side you are on?
Crud. Now I need to find red blue versions. Thats what I get for using Burst Textures for bases.Quote from: "fortegigasgospel"Could blue and red be traded out for plenty of signs letting you know which side you are on?
No, seriously. I only had signs in the old MMCTF10, and people STILL got confused to which base was base. You NEED red/blue textures around to make it more obvious.
Another question: how many player starts are recommended for each base?I'd say 16, cause 32 is max so 16 players per team.
Yes, I made my map able to be played in DM. Its better for CTF but I see no reason to have it only ctf.
Oh, man... I'm ashamed to say I'm dropping out as well. I'm a complete nut-job when it comes to mapping. I had a decent start, but there's no way I'll be able to complete a quality map before the due date.
Same with Gumball.
Alright, so as you know, the due date is June 10th. However, for the public testing. What date would best work for the most people? I'll try to be open for the day that works best for the most people. I'm giving two weeks to test the maps. If for whatever reason nothing can be decided upon / no one shows up. The winners will be selected purely by the judges.
Will the mappers be allowed to exit their stage textures to acomidate for the new avalible mm8 textures?Or MM8 weapons, as the case may also be.
So, like, it's alright if other folks in this competition ask each other for help, right? Because I've seen at least 8 of the maps that might be in the competition, and I've given some feedback to each one.Yep, it's perfectly allowed. Mostly because I have no way of proving or disproving if someone made a map without any help whatsoever. So instead I'm allowing it. HOWEVER, getting help from the judges (myself or Roc) will result in being disqualified. Since tweaking a map based on our opinions is unfair to everyone else.
Will someone record our matches?I wasn't sure if it should be recorded. If someone wants to volunteer, that's just fine with me. But I wasn't even show how many people watched mikes recordings.
What will the point limit of each match be?Depends on how many maps we have to go through. I'm thinking 5 points unless pretty much every entry comes in, then 3 points.
Will the matches have a timelimit so that each map gets a fair share of attention?I wasn't considering it, but perhaps 15 to 20 minutes. Again, it depends on how many entries come in. The more entries, the less time we can spend on each map. I doubt anyone wants to play CTF for hours on end.
Who's the 3rd judge?The 3rd judge is a secret to everybody :ugeek:
When EXACTLY do you plan on handing out the testing wad? Will it be one hour before judging? One day?Testing Wad will be available an hour before the planned time.
How about the number of people playing on these maps? Will there be a limit of 32, 24, or even 16?I'm opting for 16. 8 vs 8 is a large game. However, if there is a enough of a crowd, 24. No way I'm going for 32. Way too much for CTF Matches.
Can the general public opt to join in testing, or is it competitors-only?Yes, but competitors get priority seating.
Who will host the maps?Mess
What time do you EXACTLY plan on having the judging start?Tune in for next the next poll
Will Shady get to play, or will you opt to make the testing time comfortable for YD?Depends on the outcome of above
How influential is each competitor's vote? Each person who votes is worth 1 point.
How influential is each judge's vote?Judges votes are (tentatively) worth 1/3 (rounded up) of the total number of unique voters. So if 12 people voted, a judges vote is worth 4 points.
How many maps will get into the expansion?Mr. X and myself have new CTF Maps that are getting in regardless, so in addition, I'm saying 6 to 10.
In the case of a voting tie, what will be the tiebreaker?Purely the judges call.
What will you do prevent vote rigging?Hmm. I'll need to think about this one.
Will there be a Skype call for everyone to talk in?If someone wants to host one, go ahead.
Can there be a Skype call among the competitors?Likewise, if you want one, go ahead.
Have you gotten tired of these questions yet?Nope, not really.
If you said "no", does it feel good to lie like that to yourself?Does not apply since I said yes.
Will the mappers be allowed to exit their stage textures to acomidate for the new avalible mm8 textures? Just curious if the ctf maps will be set in stone as soon as the judging is decided, or if theres even any ctf maps already planned with the MM8 textures used. Most likely, yes.
Not sure how this'll work though.Quote from: "Bluebrawl"Can the general public opt to join in testing, or is it competitors-only?Yes, but competitors get priority seating.
And here I was thinking yesterday was the final day.(click to show/hide)
Now then, change of plans. I have 19 entries that we need to go through and vote on. 19 maps is just way too much to chew for one sitting. So instead the plan is to break it up into 3 days worth of CTF Maps. We would be looking at 6, 6, 7 maps over the course of 3 days. I think 6/7 maps a day is far easier for everyone to chew.
Voting wouldn't occur until after the final testing session on 3 days. In which case you would vote for which 6 maps you want to see in MM8BDM and the grand prize winner (so technically you are voting for 7 maps to get into mm8bdm. 1 grand prize winner and 6 other entries.)
Also due to the 3 day spread, I think it's better to get this started sooner. Perhaps even tomorrow.
What does everyone else think?
I won't be able to play online but it would be intresting to see what everyone came up with.same here.
Are they all going to played in the evening?
Everyone will be allowed to vote. Voting occurs after the third set of maps. I'm only accepting votes from "regular community members". I.E. I won't count PMs from people I've never heard of.
Maybe say at least 250 posts?Does that mean i have to make 15 posts by Thursday?
I just thought of something.
Why the deuce isn't CutmanMike one of the main judges!?
Does that mean i have to make 15 posts bu Thursday?Seeing as you're a contestant, I doubt that matters.
CTFC01 - Tunnel Network - Solid map, good weapon choices, floor to floor action is good. Only complaint is I wish it wasn't an underwater base cause we have like 3 of those rolling around now!
It's... too late to change it now.
Sky Castle: I found some texture offset errors, and the fans are a bit wonky to work with, but if you add "Block Monsters" to the edges, it will stop the bots from falling to their deaths.
Just to let everyone know, due to all the hectic gameplay that occurred last night, there will be a change in how the system will be ran.Bah, since i dropped out i have to wait for a bit. Oh well my map was worse than jacks so i was doing justice.
Judges and Competitors will be playing first. There will be no public allowed and we'll go through the maps on our own. After we do a round of that, then I will release the wad to the public to join in and play. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Ah yes, someone mentioned to me that there were quite a few texture issues in Sky Castle and some other maps. I thought she was just being picky but then I turned software mode on, and yeah there's quite a few! Always best to test your maps in both renderers (it's okay, I forget too).
So many of these maps have multiple floors, we desperately need to figure out a way to make it easier to track where the enemy and ally team flags are. Something to look into for the future perhaps.
Triple Trouble: No Yashichi. :( There's some weird texture screw up on the lower moving walls in the center of the map. Also, why are we recycling MM7 Wily 3 music? That texture screwup may not be fixable after looking at it, a lower unpegging may mess it up worse due to the sand. As for the music possible for file size? Music takes up space. And not everyone is good at going out and finding music to add to their maps or able to loop unlooped songs they want to use. Besides didn't they say the music wasn't to be judged?
Clash in the City: Why does this map have the exact same music as Tunnel Network? Also, we only need one Yashichi, not two.Just means both people found the song and thought it fit their maps. If both get in I'm sure the team will change one's song.
Also, what's with the hilariously random name? :pI forgot to name it, so Ivory did for me based on an inside joke.
One of the main non-texture complaints I get about my map seem to be the ladders to the flag. I'm pretty darn sure I'm not allowed to edit my map, especially seeing as we've already tested it, but if I lowered the height of the flag and made the ladders tractor beams instead, would that help?I guess, maybe gyro propellers instead so it just pushes you up instantly? Not to sure.
Also, I actually liked the ladders. One of the problems of CTF is that nobody wants to be the Team Mom and babysit the flag, and with the simplistic design of bases these days people can just run in and WHOOP -- now the flag's gone and FUCKIN' EVERYBODY is trying to chase after the thing. And then you climb up to be greeted by 3 people, one being Shmeckie. Need I say the result?
With the ladders being there, it helps the few defenders do their job better. Knight Crush is a great tool to use when defending, but Super Arm can also get the job done. I'd prefer if you put Ring Boomerang or Dust Crusher somewhere just to make my life easier, but I'm not complaining.
Hey, I was looking at the Entries In list and noticed my name wasn't up there and I was kinda wondering why.Probably forgot, most of us know which map is yours if I remember correctly. You're also in the second list in green meaning you submitted a map.
Lemme get this straight...Yes........ I saw the other maps and then i thought Wow! Mine is shit compared to this! so I told Ivory that i didn't feel my map was even good enough to be tested online.
Eon had a FINISHED map that was already going to be processed...
... and he chicked out?
Triple Trouble – The gimmick is really clever, but the lava is a bit obnoxious to get out of.Supposed to avoid that room when the lava is up, it was intended to be the center room at first to make people want to go around but then I'd have to have had to do something about the white flag being in lava half the time. There is still an issue with the white flag, I'll mention that in a second though, but I do intend to fix it even if it doesn't make it in.
Overall, good job, guys! Most of these maps were solid and would work well as add-ons if they don't get in, and the ones that weren't were still fairly fun to play.
As for this, I thought about maybe the people who's maps don't make it into vanilla fix problems with there maps and make a CTF map pack with them. We don't have enough CTF map packs.
I've compiled all the runner ups in this .pk3 and you can download it here. (http://www.sendspace.com/file/8suj8k)Ha, I was actually planing on touching up Triple Trouble based on some of the feed back. Why not make it a project like Doura said as a CSCF pack so the runner ups can improve their maps.
I've compiled all the runner ups in this .pk3 and you can download it here. (http://www.sendspace.com/file/8suj8k)Awesome idea! We can play these as much as we want! Also means no work goes to waste! :D

I really think there should be a Cutstuff Cummunity CTF Map Pack with these maps to get things started.Oh, man... Totally want to finish my map now...
