Title: Departure from MM8BDM/Cutstuff
Post by: Ivory on October 11, 2014, 07:54:01 PM
Hey all you Mega Man fans, I figured the general absence thread wouldn't be fitting enough for a change this big.

Yes, you are reading the title right, I'm leaving. I wish I could of left the same way Mr. X did, but that isn't really an option for the admin and lead dev, huh? I do have to leave some sort of departure speech to announce to the community; that I'm stepping down from my duties. I know it might sound sudden for some of you, but I'm sure to others, you were well aware of the fact this day was going to happen. Just probably not so sudden and out of the blue.

It's been a blast to have been in the community for as long as I have, and spending the last few years leading MM8BDM's v3 and v4 expansions. There comes time for change, and that time has come. I have a full time job now, I have new interests and in general, I feel like it's time to start a new chapter in my life. I want to work towards new creative projects, job and life and move on from older interests.

So what does this mean for MM8BDM and Cutstuff? The game will go back to Mike to figure out what to do next for v4b and the future of the game. Figure out how to handle the lead dev leadership. Originally I was planning on at least seeing v4b out the door first, but the ZDR 1.3 pushing my plans further away is something I don't want to wait on anymore. In addition, I will be stepping down as admin in the coming days and my presence on these forums will diminish down until I'm gone.

I'm also sure some of you probably will ask "what happened to your spark? Your interest in MM8BDM?" In short, the game grew way too large for my liking. It's an ambitious project, but after awhile, loads of maps, loads of weapons, loads of gameplay mechanics and loads and loads of everything gets way too overboard. There was just too much of everything, trying to capture everything from every mainstream game and then some. It's became tedious and I don't really enjoy it anymore. My only remaining spark of interest was to see MM8BDM completed, every single game from MM-10, &Bass, WT and V covered... but what does that accomplish really? Outside of the novelty of seeing the game done and the short lived excitement of having seen it through, I realize that no, I don't really want to spend any more years of my life on this project. I've already enjoyed leading two expansions, especially working on my favorite main series title and the under appreciated Wily Tower. Heck, I even had a few things done for v5 so there will be at least a few last contribution from me to the future of MM8BDM.

As for my dev team, don't have much to say. You guys have been a great barrel of fun to work with, and I hope you guys stay together to continue to work on MM8BDM. I've had a blast, but now it's time to say good bye.

Well, that's about it. I'm not really one for long departure speeches. I hope for the best in the future under the leadership of whoever takes over my position.

~Ivory

Haven't posted here in a while, but I just have to say I really appreciate the work you've done for the game and the community in general for so long and I'm extremely sad it has come to an end. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Oh dear!

When I asked if you leaving the position of "dev leader" meant leaving Cutstuff as a whole, no one answered

Well, I wish you good luck in future endeavors. Hope you can pop back 'round for a visit occasionally (though you don't need to, of course)

I'm gonna miss you, Ivory.
Even though I never really got to know you

at least i'll stop confusing you with korby, and vice-versa

Best of luck out there!!!!!!! :)

Try to have a good time out there, though!

RIP
I-pack was part of my original motivation for Rozpack; you've done good here Ivory. You'll surely be missed.

Good luck on your future endeavors.

You'll know this one as my favorite victory theme. However, it's time to actually use its purpose as an ending theme.

You did a very good job by helping the expansions to be better and better. As a regular player who never contributed to anything (except for a crappy ms-paint drawing, let's not talk about it), I say "thank you" and "we'll miss you"!

Yo, lemme briefly come back from the dead on here to say thanks for all the time you spent on this game!
I met tons of cool people(yourself included) from this little silly thing, and had a blast during my times with it.
Hopefully whatever you do from now on, you have success with. Try not to work yourself too hard, and have good times!

I love you, Ivory.

Thank you for contributing to my life so wonderfully. I wouldn't be the same person nor would I be nearly as happy today had it not been for you. You mean so much to me and I can only hope to have returned the favor somewhat. I'm very grateful to have met you.

On a less personal note, I greatly thank you for pushing out both v3 and v4 with extreme quality and care. The amount of work you produced for both expansions alongside your leadership greatly astounds me. You really have been a huge contribution to MM8BDM, and for that reason alone I will salute you.

I know nothing's stopping us from chatting on skype, but I'll still miss you from these boards very much. Regardless, I'm happy you're doing stuff for yourself now and I hope your life goes in a favorable direction. Chase your dreams!!

You have all my love?

For all my years on being on Cutstuff, and for also being apart of one of the best group of individuals that exist on this community...you will always have a special place in my heart, Ivory.

Thanks for being someone to look up to and actually learn from experience. I'll miss you more than enough, it was a fun ride while it lasted.

Good luck with new stuff, boss.

EDIT: and yeah, you were the only person I would straight up call my boss. T'was a matter of showing respect to who it was due.

EDIT2: So wait a minute, who's gonna be the next active administrator?!

Despite my departure from this community, this is a big moment and I feel like I have to say my words as well.
I always considered Ivory as the cornerstone of MM8BDM development, whether by leading expansions or setting the bar for map pack quality, this much growth could only be achieved by someone very dedicated to their cause.

Ivory, you've been an inspiration to many people, including me when I actually existed here.

Wherever you go, don't forget how important you were. I hope the best of outcomes for your future troubles and events.

Good riddance. I didn't even like you anyway b-baka...

In all seriousness, I'm not too surprised to hear this. I'm not trying to offend anybody; however, you had a good run of just over 5 years on the forums!
It's understandable that you're departing. Every legend has to end at some point. Though your leaving message isn't as long or stretched out as other people's, but I'm sure it will leave an impact.

Now, I didn't know you too well, I watched anime with you a couple of times and talked to you a bit. I know you mostly through Korby, but other than that it's a mystery.
Overall I wish you farewell and good luck on your future endeavors.

Oh man. I haven't really known you that much besides being admin and making the Ivory map pack, but I can tell things are going to be different without you here. The only thing I can remember well from you was the fact that you let me change my name from watzup7856 to Watzup7856, and I thank you for that. (I hate looking at a lowercase username)

Watzup7856 for new admin

Anyways goodbye and I hope you do well in the future.

why am I so late in coming over here
why am I on the fourth page
why the fuck was I not here to get first reply

I... I don't know what to say, really. I mean at first you were just some person in the distance who helped run things maybe. Part of the OG "Mod Squad" with Korby and Brotoad. To be honest, I really didn't care for you much at all. Just some shadowy figure who really really liked Toohoo and girly avatars. Heck, there was the whole "he/she/it/xe/wartortle" shtick going on due to your relative ambiguity around here (and the legend of Ivory x Joseph Collins, but that's another story for another time).

Then there was this period where I legitimately thought you were out to get me. I can't even remember how many threads you locked or how many ideas you shot down, only to do the same thing (or something extremely similar) a month or two down the road. There was also that time you banned me for incredibly shaky reasons (and I promptly got unbanned once I brought up some fair logic; iirc I was only banned for 13 minutes). I didn't outright despise you, I just didn't enjoy your company in the slightest. And, for the longest time, even after I started to get over it I was sure the feeling was mutual, if only because of your behavior still somewhat resembling your old patterns.

I don't remember when it happened, but eventually we had a really awkward conversation on Skype and you told me you never really hated me. We sort of hugged it out and apologized to each other and whatever (it was super homo) but then we started to become friends. I guess I felt more comfortable actually being around you? Seeing you in common Skype groups like the mapping chat helped me get over the past, and I saw you were actually a pretty cool person. I learned more about your current interests, you told me about stupid things going over in Dev Land (or I otherwise found out through Korby or Lego). There was even that SUPER AWKWARD part of our relationship, but eventually it settled into the current state of things: two weirdos who had become unlikely good friends and had a few inside jokes of their own.

Not gonna lie, I legitimately teared up when I started reading through your post, and the comments following it. I shut off my music, closed my 3DS, left the Skype call. I just had to come here and empty out my heart. I'm still a bit salted, but... it helped. Even a little. I guess it's selfish of me to be upset, you have a life and dreams and more things than just 8BDM. Still... I really hope you still hang around Skype and such like Tengu sort of does, I don't think I could handle you completely disappearing.

Regardless of what happens, though...

Thank you, Ivory.

Thank you for your friendship.

You truly have helped to make Cutstuff a better forum.

Title: Hi Lio, Ambrose and KY
Post by: Shade Guy on October 12, 2014, 01:18:18 AM
Well. The fact that this announcement has prompted users who have left the community to momentarily return and say their farewells shows how much respect you have gained over the years. Even before you became an admin, and expansion leader for v3 and v4 you had a major impact on many of us. As KY said, you single-handedly set the standard for all custom maps. I-Pack surely influenced all major map packs to come, either through inspiration to produce work of similar quality, desire to compete with its exceeding popularity, or even intimidation of whether one's work will ever be able to live up to yours. I can't not mention the period where I sent just about every new map for SHARPv2 to you for feedback, all of it useful. Although I can hardly say I was able to return a similar output of feedback (you didn't need as much), it's been great working with you, mapping bro. But of course, I can't keep up the mapping talk forever; you've also been a good friend. It's a shame the chats I've been in with you all died out long ago (RIP Blue Square/Outer Haven and Ivory Dungeon), since although they were partly used for 8BDM content discussion (and Roc's conspiracies against the rest of the developers/community), they were also great spaces for casual talk. And though those spaces were lost long ago, it's still harrowing to see the next step in your departure. We've discussed the possibility of you leaving years ago, but seeing it actualised...cripes. I've been taking a bit of an unannounced break from the forum and Skype this week, but I logged in immediately when I saw this topic. I wonder how we'll fare without you.

Good luck with your job, and hopefully the next step for you is to work on a game you can actually make money off, haha.

I...I don't even know what to say. I feel shocked, yet not surprised at the same time. Like, I guess I could kinda tell you probably wanted to step down at some point, but I never actually thought you would.

We kinda stopped talking much after Formspring bit the dust, but I'm still sad to see you go. Regardless, I understand where you're coming from, and I wish you the best of luck and fortune.

Take care, Ivory. See you down the road.

Post by: Russel on October 12, 2014, 02:06:43 AM
All I can really say is thank you.

When you were put into leadership of Megaman 8-bit deathmatch, you decided to essentially employ me for use of my old weapons instead of simply making a new set...and that opportunity gave me unparalleled experience in programming and development of an ongoing project.

Thanks to you, I have experiences that I can take with me for the rest of my life.

I don't think I can say much more than that...thank you and good luck.

I'll admit, I don't really have anything to say personally since I think the only times I ever interacted with you was either regarding locking/unlocking my threads or the VERY RARE instance of seeing you in a server. I do understand why you've chosen to leave, though. You realize that although working with MM8BDM can be rewarding, you could be doing a whole lot more with your life. I imagine at some point I'll have to stop modding as well when I end up in my career. At least you can take away from MM8BDM the experience you got, and some of those skills, including the leadership you needed to display to keep MM8BDM going, can be applied in your future jobs as well. You will be missed from pretty much everyone on the forum, but your efforts here will not be forgotten. Good luck with your future, Ivory.

That said, I never really knew you well due to both my rather..rare postings and small amount of time I've been here.
Of course, I doubt everyone is going to stay here forever, or be able to constantly dedicate themselves to this, and with how much you did, I'd say that with your departure, you'll leave a legacy here, if nothing else.

And of course, good luck with whatever it is you're going to do next. Maybe we'll see you here again someday, maybe not.

Your name was the name I associated with Cutstuff, even more-so than CutmanMike.  Lurking and watching your contributions to the game, the forums, and the community members made me respect the hell out of you.  When I think Ivory, I think "Wow, cutstuff and MM8BDM are still alive!"  You stepping down leaves some huge ass shoes to fill.  Size 26s or something like that.

I'm sure I can speak for the lurkers and infrequent posters out there that we thoroughly appreciated your efforts.

Good luck.  Great luck.  Godspeed.

Late as always, am I?

I was expecting this since the Devroom chats. I wish you the best of luck, Ivory. You were always a great person to be around to me, the few times we did talk. Like the silly courtroom hijinx we had back in the now dead skype chat and the fun times we had on formspring before it died. Or when we watched Microsoft's E3 conference with "I'm Han Solo" in the background. I will forever cherish those times, and I wish we could do it again sometime <3

And I personally thank you sooo much for helping out with my identity change, without it, I wouldn't even be here today.

So, Goodbye and again, best of luck to you Ivory!

I was kinda ready to write up a whole thing

I had some sort of semi-grudge against Ivory as a leader because he would always just get submissions changed or most of the time he'd just flat out deny things I made after taking them without even telling me that anything had happened (like WALKING HARDMAN (http://i.imgur.com/oEPkWsp.png) or a Yellow Devil (http://i.imgur.com/YmPVD07.png) skin I was assigned for an extra or even the Protoman Battle & Fighters alt that Ivory said I could make to put in the core but didn't accept with no reasoning). And then there's his pick of MM5WAV which I still think is the second worst map in the game. And despite all that, I never really interacted with him as a person and I didn't hold any grudges against that side of him. I kinda wanted to impress him half the time and I was going to try and re-join the dev team to make some sweet MM9 maps or something once I had my resume of MMXSP-v2 maps and AMP stuff, so it's not like I hated him.

And then I got to the part in my little 'essay' where I was going to say who would've been a better leader. And then I paused. I still don't really know. Ivory is like, MM8BDM number 2! Nobody else leads anything successful or has good leadership skills in this community except me that I can think of... Messatsu could've done it? He was okay when I was in Powered Up?

So I was pretty ready to just kinda let it all out and feel better about like, myself and other people knowing what went on. I don't really know what to say now. It's just kinda some barfed up brain lines. In a weird way I pretty much gained more respect for Ivory in retrospect than I ever got the first time round. So I hope he reads this.

Bye

Somewhat off topic, but that's actually a really good walking animation for Hard Man, you got there!

I personally think it's waaay better than the current "just shuffling around awkwardly" animation that currently exists.

To be fair in Larissa's case, she's only been here for like three months or so, adding onto what Korby said. Some of us have been around for four years.

Goodbye sir. It's not worthless for me to say goodbye to someone I don't know, so here I am. Good luck wherever you go

Ivory was kinda bias against me really when he heard about a problem and then used that past to give a reason to give me another warning and the big "mr shadow" shit two years ago... And that's the only way I know him so... Yea.

Whelp I am a bit late to the party, but I figured I would say goodbye. Just remember, if you ever get bored in real life, you can always stop by for a friendly hello.

When I read the whole topic and all the posts, I was just speechless. Ivory, you're undoubtly one of the most known personalities on this forum. You participated into MM8BDM's development for a very long time, and I think, I mean we, the Cutstuff community, think that you deserved this new step in life. Over the months, you became a real icon, and you'll be remembered by each one of us. We understand that every good thing has to end someday, like the stars. And you were our star. Now, you're a legend.

You'll occupy a place in our mind, as we stare at the gaping hole among us. We know you'll be watching this project grow bigger from afar. I wish you all of the good luck for the continuation of your life and bid you farewell.

... Adieu.

Well, i want say  my thought too.... (i have read all the topic, 4 pages, and it's really sad...again......i had a tear :' /)

Even if i was mad in the "ZX topic" with Ivory, i never forget what is important in a community, the results of the work and the life, the background and the atmosphere is more important than some wars for opinions things (well, true, ,i dont like ZX but it's just my thought or opinion hehe).  :p  Well, it's not important.

Anyways, you continued the project of CMM for a lot (since CMM worked just a little like on the bosses, it seems?) You were like CMM for me then....
But yeah, studies and others things is more important, a lot of people since 2010 (when MM8BDM was released), are become adult and need to do and success their studies...so a lot of people will leave....again....the people who will be there (like me, maybe because i dont work XD ), we will try to get more people in this fangame, because it's an awesome fangame, really more complete than a lot of others fps games for me. : 3 <3

Without your work and the work of the others, i couldnt be able to do some "MM8BDM stands in the conventions"... like http://youtu.be/NNtzbD6EMnE (http://youtu.be/NNtzbD6EMnE) Thanks for that too... :)

Your packmap was a reference for the servers I hosted....not only mm8bdm.
I hope CMM will find a new admin or workers....for MM9 and 10 expensions, this community need to be always alive. And keep the war-modes deleted of our soul (I become mad when a guy start to piss people in the justified server....maybe i need just to ignore and "enjoy" the game....like people told me often : p , but yeah, sometimes, i can be really angry, but it's superficial?...not important i mean )
Be sure we will be there to make MM8BDM popular as we can!
Long live again to MM8BDM, good luck for your next projects, studies and others and thanks a ton for your work Ivory!! Buddy cool ;3

EDIT: Some memories....for Ivory and all the others people who have left the "game"....

I hope This game will be continued to be developped, because it's the best fangame, ever! <3

Wow I am super late to this party but it is completely understandable to put real life first and keep leisure as leisure!

Like Mr. X, you will be missed. Your contributions will be remembered; by people who have not even discovered the game yet. You are an excellent leader and more than competent as a project manager. I have no doubt you will be successful in whatever you choose as your next step in life! Hopefully this experience has a positive impact on the trajectory of your career.

The underlying engine this game is based on has been around for decades and hopefully it, along with your contributions, remain and are played for decades to come. You have a natural talent for design so hopefully when the time comes where the Doom bug bites you again you will rediscover the enjoyment this game has brought to so many.

For that reason I will not say "good bye" but instead "see you later." Some day, in some way your talents may grace us all again. I hope I am around when that time finally comes.
