MM8BDM Discussion / Re: Anyone play on a fairly regular basis?

Am I the only one who suspects this is a spam bot or paid poster?

I'm looking to see if anyone plays this game fairly regular, because I need some people to play with to pratice. Bots are ok, but they don't think and change their strategies. If so, please get a hold of me. When I host, my game comes up as The Fox Hole.

Happy fragging

Instead of the wild goose chase that is crash log sniffing,

It is actually quite useful to have crash logs as it can help pinpoint issues and resolve them faster.

Projects & Creative / Re: New Project Forum Rule
« on: October 26, 2012, 01:22:46 AM »
This is a great idea, and I support its implementation and enforcement. Instead of punitive enforcement in some cases though, I would recommend a civil discussion or reminder to the author to point out there are broken links.

Also, while I fully support and have a couple projects documented on Wadhost I also acknowledge it is not for everyone since the bar can be pretty high in terms of documenting what your project is about. Achtung [the head admin of the Wadhost network] is a fantastic guy and I admire, support, and participate in his requirement of documentation which, I will point out, is exactly the same format people used on BBS in the heyday of Doom and it is excellent that he continues to use this format.

If you are unable or unwilling to use the Wadhost system there's still hope!

A couple of wonderful people in our Zandronum community have set up an automated hosting solution, called best-ever hosting. Their website is http://best-ever.org/ and they can be reached on IRC at irc.zandronum.com #bestever.

I have explicitly asked them if they are ok with MM8BDM being used on this and they have granted permission to use this valuable resource for the purposes of MM8BDM since it uses the Zandronum[/ Skulltag] engine(s) and is compatible with the Doom-style WAD file format. With their automated hosting of course they have a repository for hosting wads as well, located at http://www.best-ever.org/wads/ which is searchable by Doomseeker/ Wadseeker. Although users are not required to document what their projects are in great detail like the new and improved Wadhost, they are still required to register. The goal of this registration process is likely to be able to shut down people who use the site for malicious purposes or for hosting non-wad resources.

For me personally this might have an impact since when Wadhost died a lot of the stuff I had released got lost since I relied almost exclusively on Wadhost for file hosting. I tried to restore most links in posts on the forum using dogsoft and others but there may be some I have missed. I have most everything archived on cd-rom somewhere. Please private message me if you find a non-working link (especially in my achievement challenges thing or other project). I will fix these links as I become aware of their non-working status. The issue of unintentional link breakage is something to consider in enforcement of this rule.

With these resources available to users, this rule should be one that is minimally burdensome to wad authors and I look forward to seeing what new projects and custom content people create and share!

I think this is nothing but positive for the community. People should think of the core MM8BDM as the "gold standard" experience.

Sooner or later the people who are just lemmings will filter out but I imagine more than a few will stick around and learn more about the game. 400 people have joined MM8BDM recently, even if 10 of those stick around it will be amazing.

It gives even more incentive to make our custom content and the next release to be of amazing quality because clearly the existing release has quality there that people are just now beginning to recognize. I'm sure years down the road this cycle will repeat again! I disregard the notion that MM8BDM will "die". People were saying that in 1996 when Quake came out about Doom and look where we are today...

MM8BDM Discussion / Re: Can it be ported? (engine)
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:27:25 PM »
While there aren't a lot of options that are practical for porting the MM8BDM game assets, one possibility that I think could be argued successfully is to make a binding for (G)ZDoom. You'd need to redefine or outright replace certain actors like the CTF flags and some other internal things specific to Skulltag but I think it would be a nice bonus somewhere along the line.

This wad needs

Code: [Select]
sv_maxclientsperip 1

Because player index is shared across clients. Think of if you join a server with 2 clients on the same machine and you attempt to call a vote kick from one client to the other. It doesn't work. This mod suffers from the same limitation, which is a Skulltag limitation.

It's probably a good idea to enforce this for Duel anyway, as dual clienting to coop spy your opponent is a known exploit.

DUEL QUEUE IN DEATHMATCH

http://doom.dogsoft.net/download.php?f= ... ue-v1e.zip | File Size: 1.27 KB

This is just a small wad that creates a rudimentary Duel queue when in Deathmatch mode (due to some supposed issues with actual duel in skulltag at the time of this writing).

Just set up a 2 player/ 32 spectator Deathmatch server with this wad and the person who loses will automatically be made to spectate. Works best with actual players and up to one bot and other players. More than one bot has them joining too quickly in succession but nevertheless still works if you can get in the join queue between them.

This is a lightweight, portable wad that should be compatible with your favorite modifications.
