Regarding The Future
« on: December 31, 2010, 08:55:09 PM »
It seems as if it has been getting more and more difficult to find online servers for MM 8bit DM. There are so many servers that either cheat, require passwords, or require special WADs that finding a regular DM game has become very rare. CTF games are practically nonexistent anymore. I do not appreciate servers that are not open to the general public, and I feel as if this game cannot afford them. I've been playing this game since it came out, and the only thing I have been able to play for weeks has been Roboenza.
How is this game going to attract new people if even I can't find an accessible map? It used to be that private servers were something of a rarity, now they are all too common.
The question that I ask is this: Are the private servers worth it?
I for one have never found the appeal. Playing with the same people is boring as hell.
Frankly, this separation of servers will ruin this game.
I love this game, and I am thinking about deleting it because I just can't play it online anymore.
This needs to change if you have any intent of keeping this game alive.

There's a lot of dead servers out there, but most of the players migrate to Flashback's (God help us if that ever gets full), or Deathwind's servers.

I cannot mention many others I've been to besides Lakister's various servers, which are usually good fun if you get people in there, and Patches' servers, which don't last long but are still fun..

Deathmatch servers are often dead empty because of Roboenza, and it'll keep that way once Roboenza gets another update, or until v1d when those fancy new weapons come out, and Roboenza won't deliver them!

I got bored of DM, but no one joins TLMS, so I pretty much have to play Roboenza. And cheat servers are the most boring of any servers out there. I really wish there were some CTF servers. I would host one myself, but I can't host due to an unstable IP.

I've also found it odd that most servers are the same game mode. What happened to terminator, possesion, duel, or the insta-kill blades? It's always deathmatch, cheat, or roboenza.

This isn't too far off from Regular Doom. Good luck finding something that isn't coop/Deathmatch/CTF or gamemodes. I don't even know the last time I saw someone playing something else. Even Skulltags titular Skulltag gamemode isn't played, and in MM8BDM's case. Not even supported.

For the record, skulltag mode needs special sprites and maps specifically designed for the game mode. You can't use any old map.

It has been rather difficult for me to find a non-roboenza/non-custom map pack/non-cheat server as well.  I haven't played much lately...but I still want to

It's just a shame.
This game is really good, and it does not deserve a fate like this. :(

inb4 massive army of forum posters who will post "play more dm, roboenza sucks" and end up just BAWWWWing on the forums and not actually play the game.

I called it for if it happens.

Hosting your own server and inviting all your friends seems like the way to go. Always had tons of fun when we 'bug tested' this game.

I wish there'd be tons of public servers available too, but MM8BDM isn't a mega popular release like Call of Duty or anything. Best thing you can do there is spread the word and get more people interested in the game.

I've been trying to host a team possession server for quite some time but I can't get my server to work properly.

All I can suggest is get on to the hosts of these servers to make them more user friendly.

I would be able to open a server myself, but for some reason my server never shows up on the server list.  I opened the right ports and everything.
