Anything Goes / The self-promotion continues. Learn HTML, fool!
« on: January 04, 2013, 02:54:56 AM »
Due to a change in forum rules, everything in the Projects forum must be compatible with WADseeker, so once you've configured that in Doomseeker you don't have to individually download WADs. If you want to look at threads, look at Ivory's cleaner list of projects here.

You'll have to reconfigure DoomSeeker anyway because the current version of the game uses Zandronum instead of Skulltag. You can read about this and other changes to the game here.

MM8BDM Discussion / Can't really say how Jenova will act, anyway.

Send Jenova or Watermelon a message on IRC. It's right there in the MOTD.
Watermelon wanted a separate master server for MM8BDM to cut it off from the Zandronum community.

There's no way he's going to help anyone from this game, let alone minor disputes amongst players that have been posted on the forums in the past (which are almost always complaining about vote kicks in servers).

At the very least, he might be able to solve problems relating to the zandronum client itself (like master server bans that happened on Skulltag) but it's very doubtful he'd offer help to anyone here. (If you don't believe me, just look at the last time he was here.) A good example would be the problem of map rotations in servers - although I believe King Dumb already handled that issue for his.

There are probably a few people on CutStuff already familiar with Zandronum, anyway.

I wonder if learning to use Famitracker is difficult. I'd like to compose some 8-bit goodness.
I managed to do it, and I don't consider myself as someone with high technical knowledge. Getting it is simple. I'd recommend Danooct's tutorial, starting here. Famitracker is designed like a computer program instead of a compositional tool, but the end function is the same. If you know any basic music theory terminology (e.g. beats, measures...) they generally all have famitracker counterparts you can figure out pretty quickly. Some of them are identical, such as tempo. The terminology is mostly all explained in tutorials; once you understand what certain things mean altering them to make a sound you want becomes fairly basic.

I wonder why no body does any 8-bit remixes of these musics?
All of those songs already exist in 8-bit. In their respective NES titles. Not only that, the tunes are largely forgettable and soundfonts used here are terrible - the songs actually sound worse than their 8-bit counterparts! So all anyone covering it would be doing would be remaking a song that's already in  8-bit using an inferior copy. No need for such thing. If you want them you'll most likely have to do them yourself. It'd be great practice for using famitracker as you'd be able to check your copy against the original NES versions for accuracy.

I have to apologize for earlier, as I never got back to you on this.

When I said the octave was too low, I meant in the first two pulse waves (square 1/2), my bad!

But otherwise the cover is solid. Sounds fairly accurate to my ears, anyway.

This is not chat speak. This is "l33t sp34k". The problem (or issue at hand, if I may) with your example is that typing in l33t actually takes longer than typing in "normal" or chat speak. Thus, it's rarely (if ever) used. Implementing a ban on this would be useless. Besides, l33t speak is, at least funnier and somewhat novel compared to this:
Quote from: "MEGAMANX123"
yes i hate that its annoying this is good enough said.
And really. If you can't even ban something like that (which is common), what are you even banning at all? As Llama mentioned, at best one or two people might speak like this, if ever, and you can't change someone's behavior with a rule like this; only eliminate it.

I'm all in favor of updating the rules, as I've mentioned before, but I'd like it done in a way in which moderators enforce something that's agreed on. When people in this topic can't even agree on what 'chat speak' is (let alone find examples of it), I'm worried about the consequences of suggesting a rule to ban it. Even though such a rule would likely change nothing, except add clutter to the rules page.

You already can shorten links using the forum's URL code.
Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.google.com]Here, let me google that for you][/url]Translates into this:
Here, let me google that for you

See? The link has been shortened by including it in the url tag (and hyperlinking selected text instead). Tinyurls are unnecessary (and asking for trouble).

Tutorial Collection / Not like that thread has a use, anyway.
« on: December 29, 2012, 12:30:13 AM »
I, myself, would love seeing this (or at least, the initial post) merged into the "introduce yourself here" thread in some fashion.

How else are you going to get anyone to read it?!

I desire to enlighten people. That doesn't mean that I have to be nice about it.
Actually, yes. Although it may be humorous to other elitist assholes out there, you come off as nothing but incredibly hostile to your intended audience. (Since you make no efforts at hiding your seething hatred of grammatically-challenged incompetents) At best you may enlighten someone, but as long as you immediately convince anyone that you hate them, you won't get them to listen to you at all.

(Bumped because a thread like this is a far more pertinent solution to forum grammar than the other suggestions popping up lately.)

Maybe I could do the same and start listening to more Japanese EDM.
Well, not just Japanese EDM, but Japanese rock and hip-hop but any EDM would be great. EDM (and electronic music in general) has so many different styles it's virtually an entire hemisphere of music. Of course, I'm partial to Japanese EDM since I loathe Europeans since that's what started my own interest in music, but I've moved beyond that especially after realizing one things: many Japanese artists are influenced heavily by non-Japanese artists. (And it works in reverse, too.) And like you said - you never know what you'll like. So here's some hardstyle to try.

Death Grips are fantastic, by the way. And being somewhat familiar with classical music, I feel that Holst is a bit overrated - still great tracks, but there's much more interesting and powerful stuff out there.

Whoa stop right there bucko. Don't you see this possibly offending certain users? For example, ones that aren't on the list or ones that are low on the list?
No. For people who are on the list: Being included as a gym leader is supposed to be an honor, isn't it? Who could be so ungrateful as to be "offended" by being included on a list of skilled players?

For people who aren't: I don't suppose there's actually a large number of people who care about how they're ranked skill-wise and about being in this game. All of them could easily fit on the list. That's why the list I presented I did so only as an example. I knew that if that idea were used, the list would be picked by insecure developers who couldn't bear accepting the idea they weren't the most skilled players at this game. Thus, they could just make a list of themselves. Presto, flame war averted!
Quote from: "HD_"
It's a community game, there's no need for any sort of progression in terms of the actual people used. If anything, all it would do is start a flame war on who deserves what spot most.
Does being a community game also mean it needs to have baseless self-fanservice? Because that's all it is (along with other "Community" projects). The idea that it "needs" anything is rather lacking. It doesn't need to be anything more than an incinerated agglomeration of canine excrement passing as a game, but you wouldn't want that, would you? Because when you use the "community" label to justify things such as this, you'll end up with a lot of people playing a game that lacks polish and coherence. A natural progression is just one of many things that could go into the game to make it feel like a "real" game, and not a community one. But it doesn't need that, does it? The community is the lowest common denominator, after all.

Because I'm sure everyone outside of the MM8 Expansion would love that they don't even get a chance to show up in this game [/sarcasm] Not to mention that that isn't even the whole team.[/b]
No, because people outside the expansion would know the reason they weren't included in the gym leaders: they weren't part of the expansion. As of now, the current list is done out of "respect" for a person, which is a totally meaningless description which lacks any consistency. Does anyone really respect people like Roc's Creation? Doubtful. The current system leaves the most opportunity for unnamed persons to become offended, yet even so, they appear to be not present, so improving it wouldn't have any ill effects!

And of course, the list is only for the gym leaders. Anyone can show up "in the game"; the TC said it himself. All they have to do is PM him. The possibility of someone being excluded is impossible. And while no, that isn't the whole MM8 team, you'll notice I divided them into categories. It IS all the mappers. It IS all the coders. (As far as I know. If I missed any significant coder, it was later in development) Do you really want to include every person who made a sprite, or sent a sketch to the credits? There has to be a limit. That IS one thing the game needs, otherwise it'll go on forever. Literally.
Quote from: "Donutyoshi"
A. I already got half of the leaders programmed.
B. Most of the towns usually revolve around the type used for the gym, thus changing the gyms would mean major changes to towns which I really just want to stray from.
C. I'm basically at the point where I'd work with the plot and I want to make sure the leaders aren't boring. Any changes to the leader roster could be problems when you're in the middle of working on the plot.
D. You do realize YD's the gentlemen behind the ideas for the gyms?
E. It's not really skill arranged yes. But it does still mean there will be a difficulty curve in Pokèmon teams. And if that's not satisfying. I do plan it being possible to rematch Leaders (and Elite Four too?) with a full 6 Pokèmon team, and not restricted whatsoever.
F. I never really cared on whose's great or bad in Deathmatch. I'm just doing it based on the COMMUNITY, not the players. You could be not interested or stopped playing Pokèmon in like maybe Gen 4 or something. But if still did something interesting or atleast gave people a sign of interest for Cutstuff, you'd be in anyways.
G. I want to make sure everyone here makes a appearance somewhere.
You'll notice I never suggested changing the leaders' teams, or their gyms, or their towns. You've made those conclusions entirely on your own. As such, I really have no concern for anything YD wants. You COULD keep them the same if you really desired. Of course, though: Changing them in the middle of the plot is the best time to do so, as you're not actually "locked in" to anything.

How is the Community NOT "the players"? That's EXACTLY what it is! When you include people in a list that are all but absent from the game (8BDM) and the forums, how can you insist they're in the "community"? Unless, of course, you're referring to the Donutyoshi Community - which I believe would be a more appropriate title.

What amuses me is both of you seem to miss that anyone can be included as a "minor trainer". So if you're worried about "everyone" (another nameless person/existence) being in the game, it's unfounded: "Everyone" can get in the game if they really wanted to. Knowing that, why not make everyone on an equal level who doesn't fit a requirement to be a leader? Then no one is "offended" at their role. But then your friends wouldn't get the roles they want, right?
Quote from: "Donutyoshi"
Also HD, personally you shouldn't get too mad over him. It's not like his ideas are actually going to happen.
Exactly. How could my ideas happen in a game that isn't actually going to be completed?

Looking back at the roles list, I'd like to consider totally revising it. No disrespect to anyone picked, however, it just seems rather baseless and lacking in progression overall.  Try and order the gym leaders based on something that 'increases' for each one. (In the games, the later gym leaders are usually older, for example.) What would be a possible example of something that increases incrementally? Skill level. Here's my example list:
(click to show/hide)
"But Roc! Those are all old blood! No one cares about them any more!" Well, maybe. Here's an alternative list done with "newer" users:
(click to show/hide)
You get the idea. Both of those examples follow a 'progression' of some kind, which the current list lacks. (Of course, if you really don't want to change the leaders, feel free to use the list for something else.)
Actually, you can just make a list based off the last expansion. This is probably the "easiest" to use.

Why is that? Although I'm not big on K-pop, I'm enjoy Gangnam Style much more than other "pop hits" in the last few years or so. I would be enthralled if Psy has what it takes to dethrone Bieber.

The actual song and video itself is fairly tongue-in-cheek once you know the full the story.
