Title: [TUTORIAL] DoomSeeker for Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch
Post by: CutmanMike on September 24, 2010, 12:27:43 AM
DOOMSEEKER

Ready to play Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch online with others? Then it's time to connect using Doomseeker!

Doomseeker is a third party server browser used for finding and connecting to MM8BDM servers, and is now bundled with all installations of MM8BDM. Doomseeker can be launched by using MM8BDM's launcher, under the Multiplayer tab. Don't see the Launch Doomseeker button? Try redownloading MM8BDM from our Download (https://cutstuff.net/mm8bdm/?page_id=309) page.

Doomseeker will then open with a list of active servers. Double clicking on a server will attempt to connect you to the game.

If any additional files or mods are required in order to join the server, you will be given a prompt to try to find and install these files. Once downloaded, you should then be able to join the game.

Have fun playing MM8BDM online!

Banned from Master Server

If you can't see any servers or you receive an error about being banned by the Zandronum master server, your IP address may be caught in a range ban by mistake. Sometimes, the Zandronum Staff needs to ban a range of IPs to keep a known cheater or troll out of the servers. Sometimes, players get caught up in these ranges and are banned before they can even play. If that happens to you, follow these instructions and you'll be unbanned. (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4664)

Manual Installation

If you prefer, you can use your own installation of Doomseeker by manually downloading it from their website (https://doomseeker.drdteam.org/).

I'm having trouble.  I've done everything you've said, but I get an error message "C:/users/PERSONALINFORMATIONHERE/Desktop/MM8BDM-v1a/0.98d-alpha-r2969 doesn't exist.  You need to install new testing binaries."

Try unticking the testing binaries checkbox in the engine screen. That might be a step I missed in the tutorial but it worked for me on my computer.

You need to contact the skulltag people about that. Most likely your IP was caught in a range ban by mistake.

I've followed the instructions and all that comes up whenever I click on a server is the launcher. am I missing something, problem started when the v1b update came out.  :?

It sounds like you're pointing to the launcher rather than skulltag.exe. Repeat the "engines" part of the tutorial, and make sure you browse for skulltag.exe NOT MM8BDM.exe

First you need to download that file, which can be found on the main site.

Second, you need to add the file before you launch it. In the MM8BDM launcher hit "add file" before you launch the game. If you're using DoomSeeker, the file will automatically be added when you try to join the server.

File => Create Server.

Honestly, why did anyone need to answer this? Explore the darn client before asking.

Don't just assume that!
...actually, I should have retyped that earlier post.
I know how to set up the wads, and the Iwad but what do you put for the Executable bar? The MM8BDM.exe just launches the MM8BDM launcher. I tried Skulltag, but that messed up all the textures and I could only see black. Sometimes, it even crashes Skulltag.

That's what I meant to ask.

PWADS: MM8BDM-v1c.pk3 roboenza-2.wad

You can find the Classes mod in the Classes topic, of course. (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1743)

Most large projects can be found in the "Projects" sub-forum in editing, Maps can be found in the Maps sub-forum, etc.

I have a problem, I thought I fixed it but it didn't.

I cannot join an multiplayer online without doomseeker, well that's no problem, the main issue is that the skins won't show up at "plater setup"

And before you ask, yes I have a folder called "skins" in the same directory of skulltag with the skins inside.

I am very confused and ticked off now. When I find a server on doomseeker hosting this game I have everything green except for the WADS. It keeps saying i`m missing MM8BDM-v1d.pk3 yet when I check my megaman file (yes I named it megaman)  and I have the MM8BDM-v1a.pk3 instead? I used wad seeker to find MM8BDM-v1d.pk3 but no results showed up. Wasn`t that supposed to come with the download anyway because I don`t know where to find it.

Here's something that worked for me:
1-go to doomseeker options, go to engine select skulltag, go your MM8BDMv2 folder or whatever version.
2-select the skulltag in the folder, and put ok.
3-be sure to uncheck the testing releases box.
And that's it, you're ready to play  :)

Good Afternoon all. Sorry for being new and with a stupid question, but I'm positive I'm doing something wrong here.

When trying to join a Server, I get a message saying it needs "mm8bdm-v2c.pk3". WadSeeker tries to find it, to no avail.

I presume I missed a step, forgot to put a file somewhere. So if someone could help me fix this, I'd be greatful.

Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to connect to someone who is using "MM8BDM-v2c.pk3", but it says that I need "MMBCv1a.pk3".

If that's a "Battle and Chase" map, where do I get it? :geek:

NVM, I found it in the projects.

now, i can't connect to another guy b/c he's using "MM8BDM-v2a.pk3".

V2A is an outdated version of MM8BDM. It usually had major server problems.

You really shouldn't use V2A unless you're ready for crashing often.

Thought I'd post here instead of creating a new topic.

Okay I hope this gets anwsered. As you may know I been playing here for awhile but, all of a sudden Doomseeker kinda just eh, stopped working.

A message pops up when I try to get servers:

"Doomseeker is unable to proceed with the refresh operation becuase one or more of the following problems occured:

       - Plugins are missing from the engines/directory
       - All master servers have been disabled from the query menu
       - There are no custom servers present"

I didn't do anything with the plugins far as I know, other than me having two skulltags one for MM8BDM and the other for the rest of the servers. It is for things like Doom Co-Op and trying out GVH which I suck at very much haha. But all I do is switch the skulltag for use in the directory to play other servers.

If I use the in-game browser on MM8BDM I can still find servers. But all of those extra wads I used Wadseeker to get, sigh.

And well I have no clue why the master server would be disabled.

Well I hope this gets resolved soon and I'd appreciate help.

EDIT:    I also got rid of all my doomseeker stuff and redownloaded it, still the error pops up.

EDIT 2: Yeah I got IDE, although I HAVE to redownload my Wadseeker crud again sigh. And the programs visuals look like windows 95 or 98 well really old windows. Pointless whining I know but egh.

Just download the file it says you need. Search in the Cutstuff page or the forums for the file, then just add it to doomseeker / IDE. Also check for updates. And important in the testing binaries just uncheck the square

When do you crash? Before running the skulltag window or during the skulltag game?
Title: Re: [TUTORIAL] DoomSeeker for Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch

Well, I guess it's sort of in between. It was during the whole loading game thing that DOS likes to do, and it goes and crashes before the whole window even loads.

I need help!  :(  I can't open a server! I've tried the MM8BDM Launcher, and it works fine other than it doesn't connect the server to DoomSeeker. I've tried SkullTag, and it says I need a copy of Doom to even browse multiplayer games!    And I've tried to open one with DoomSeeker itself, which seemed to work until I clicked start server. It then opened a Co-op server with the map set as MAP01: entryway, which I assume is a Doom Map. Please respond ASAP so I can help get MM8BDM back up and running!  ;)

MM8BDM doesn't have Co-op. Also, when launching the server, make sure you have added both the PK3 and the WAD. There's a tutorial somewhere explaining how to launch servers.

And, as a friend, I recommend you to do not spam faces.

Well, I'm sure you can run SkullTag and DoomSeeker with a trial of either Doom or Doom II. Found my old Doom II floppy ( floppy), and it works fine. Have you tried linking the MM8BDM folder to DoomSeeker? Because you can't find many, if any DoomSeeker servers in just MM8BDM itself. Same with Doom/Doom II/Hexen. If you can't figure out how to get the folder in, let me or FCx or someone know. (I still can't play the game btw, still randomly crashing with no error message.)

Well, you're pointing Doomseeker at your MM8BDM zip file instead of Zandronum.Exe. In Options -> Configure -> Engines -> Zandronum, there should be a field labeled "Path To Executable". Navigate to where you extracted MM8BDM to and select Zandronum.Exe. Once you do that, try to join a server.

wait, actually it still isn't working. I copied Zandronium.exe to the folder that MM8BDM.zip is in, yet when I try to connect to a server (double clicking it, right clicking and then selecting join, etc.), it just does nothing.
Title: Re: [TUTORIAL] DoomSeeker for Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch
Post by: Orange juice :l on April 20, 2013, 03:17:13 AM
You shouldn't need to use MM8BDM.zip at all. Once you've extracted it to your chosen location (which I'm certain you have, seeing how you're playing single player), use the copy of Zandronum.exe that was extracted alongside it for Doomseeker.

Unless you're playing on Mac, then I don't have the experience to help you.

Title: Re: [TUTORIAL] DoomSeeker for Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch
Post by: Orange juice :l on April 20, 2013, 02:23:00 PM
You don't need to run Zandronum.exe either. You only need to double click a server in Doomseeker and it'll load Zandronum, along with MM8BDM, which will automatically connect to the server.

Title: Re: [TUTORIAL] DoomSeeker for Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch
Post by: Orange juice :l on April 20, 2013, 03:18:52 PM
Except... V1A didn't have Turboman's map. The current version is V3A, so make sure you have that.

Make sure EVERYTHING MM8BDM related is in one single folder. That includes Zandronum.exe, Megagame.wad, mm8bdm-v3a.pk3, Zandronum-[yourname].ini, All your custom mods, and all the .dlls and other files that were included in MM8BDMV3A. Doomseeker can go in a different folder. Once all those files are together, set your executable to THAT copy of Zandronum.exe, make sure your wad paths navigate to THAT folder, and then you should be good to go.

Once you've extracted MM8BDM.zip, which contains all of the above files, it can be deleted.

Is there a way I can shut down one of my own servers so it doesn't appear in Doomseeker even if the server's window from the MM8BDM.exe was closed? There were a few updates I had to make to it before I could rehost, but when I try to host a new server to the same port with the same WADs, it still shows the old one.

Did you actually close the old one? If you did and it's still showing, open task manager and end any zandronum related processes. If it's a Best-Ever server and you have RCON, connect to it and type in "exit". If it's a Best-Ever server and you managed to lose your RCON, you're going to need to contact an admin in the Best-Ever IRC channel.

This error occurs only when trying to join a LMS/TLMS/Hotel server that has classes on it as well.
I figured it was something with the file, but Iunno.

(click to show/hide)

There is only 1 ClassesV6F.pk3 file, I've tried redownloading from both bestever directly and the topic link, and i've cleared the zandronum.ini if that's a thing. I'm also 100% sure that it's loading the file; as above mentioned it only happens on those gamemodes/maps.

Well with the recent release of v3b, I seem to be having a problem with doomseeker. No matter what servers I try to join, it tells me to check to see if I'm using all the right WADs. I have all the WADs from the server, and it wont even let me connect to vanilla servers. I've checked my file paths and wadseeker directories, but nothing seems to be working.

Well, I did everything, and it works, but, how do you actually enter the games? It just downloads the wads and opens up the box for playing MM8BDM. :?

Your "Path to Executable" needs to point to Zandronum.exe, not MM8BDM.exe.

I don't have skulltag, or atleast I can't find it.
Can I have a download, or if I should have it, where it is?

If you're reaching the point where Zandronum simply says
Code: [Select]
Connecting to [IP]...Then my best guess is that Zandronum is being blocked by a firewall or similar. Are you sure Zandronum is being allowed through any firewall/antivirus programs?

WHAT IS DOOMSEEKER?
Doomseeker is a Doom Port Server Browser, which gives you a list of all available servers for Zandronum, Skulltag, Odamex, Vavoom, and ChocolateDoom. Don't worry, we'll only be using one of them: Zandronum.

WHY DO I WANT DOOMSEEKER?
Doomseeker is amazingly convenient and fast compared to the internal browser.

How to use the internal browser:
Load MM8BDM.
Navigate through the clunky browser.
Get server info.
Download all missing wads manually.
Reload MM8BDM with wads manually.
Navigate to server.
Connect and play.

How to use Doomseeker:
Load Doomseeker.
Select server.
WADseeker automatically downloads all missing wads for you.
Connect and play.

Doomseeker is easily ten times faster, so once you've installed it, you can get right into multiplayer games and frag away!

INSTALLATION GUIDE:

I will update this with pictures and/or video ASAP to make the process more user-friendly.

1. Download and install. http://doomseeker.drdteam.org/
2. In "Query" in the toolbar, uncheck everything but "Zandronum". This makes querying slightly faster and slims down your results.
3. In "Server Filter" (The funnel), enter "megagame" in the field labeled "WADs". This excludes servers hosting Doom, Doom2, HeXen, and other games running on the same engine.
4. In Options > Configure > Engines > Zandronum > Path to executable, navigate to wherever MM8BDM was extracted to and select "zandronum.exe"
5. MAKE SURE that "Masterserver address" is "master.zandronum.com:15300" without quotes.
6. Uncheck "Testing Releases" if it's checked.
7. In the same Configure menu, select "File paths". Select the folder you extracted MM8BDM to and ensure that you put all .pk3 and .wad files in that folder.
8. In the same Configure menu, select Wadseeker > General. Select the folder you extracted MM8BDM to under "Directory where Wadseeker will put wads into". Wadseeker automatically downloads mods for you that you don't have.
9. In Wadseeker > Sites, ensure you have the following URLS in the large white field. If you don't, copy and paste them into the white bar below and click "add". These are the two most-used sites for MM8BDM, though some very obscure mods may use other sites.
Code: [Select]
http://www.best-ever.org/wads
http://wadhost.fathax.com/e107_files/downloads/wadseeker.php?search=%WADNAME%
10. Hit "Get servers" (Double red down arrow). A list should show up.
11. Try connecting to any server with the only wad listed being "MM8BDM-v3a.pk3"; one server as of the time of writing this is ":: [BE] New York :: MM8BDM CTF".
12. If you connect, Doomseeker is set up!
13. Try a server with another mod; use ":: [BE] New York :: MM8BDM TLMS" as a test, this server won't be running any private beta test mods.
14. If you complete the downloads from Wadseeker and connect, Wadseeker is also configured correctly and Doomseeker should be working perfectly. Go wild.

A list of dedicated servers to basic game modes can be found here (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=5229).

FAQ:
No servers are popping up, and there's a message saying I'm banned from the Zandronum Master Server! Why?
Sometimes, the Zandronum Staff needs to ban a range of IPs to keep a known cheater or troll out of the servers. Sometimes, players get caught up in these ranges and are banned before they can even play. If that happens to you, follow these instructions and you'll be unbanned. (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4664)

A bit new to the forums, but not so much to the scene of Deathmatch...sorta.

Anyway, I've been playing it for awhile and recently decided to try and get in on some online action since there's only so much I can do with bots. I've done everything in the tutorial (at least, to my knowledge) and each time I try to start, I get this message just as soon as Skulltag is about to run;

Quote
>Script error, "MM8BDM-v4a.pk3:actors/player/megaman.txt" line 65:
Invalid state parameter a_scalevelocity

Anybody know what's the cause of this? Do I need to redownload/reinstall something? Or perhaps I placed something in the wrong area...?

Oh, this isn't using Skulltag anymore.

We have been using its spiritual successor, Zandronum (http://zandronum.com/) ever since version 3.
It looks like their website is not really working at the moment, though.

You need to set up a path link to your Zandronum file. There should be a category in the Configure section labeled Engines, and check the settings for Zandronum.

It's where you've installed 8BDM to.
Also, a quick look at the previous pages of this thread could've answered your question:
Quote from: "Orange juice :l"
Your "Path to Executable" needs to point to Zandronum.exe.
Quote from: "Orange juice :l"
Well, you're pointing Doomseeker at your MM8BDM zip file instead of Zandronum.Exe. In Options -> Configure -> Engines -> Zandronum, there should be a field labeled "Path To Executable". Navigate to where you extracted MM8BDM to and select Zandronum.Exe. Once you do that, try to join a server.
Quote from: "Orange juice :l"
You only need to double click a server in Doomseeker and it'll load Zandronum, along with MM8BDM, which will automatically connect to the server.

This is still relevant for any issue you might encounter, sa173533.

En gros, "Query" c'est une sorte de liste de serveurs dans la barre d'outils en haut de la fenêtre de Doomseeker. Si tu télécharges MM8BDM, tu n'as que Zandronum.

Hello,

I just tried using Doomseeker for the first time. I updated it, configured everything, and tried to join a random server. The game launched, but instead of joining, the console told me I needed Zandronum 1.2.2.

Do I need to download the new Zandronum and replace the old one somehow ? Is MM8BDM even compatible with 1.2.2 ?

Thanks in advance !

Yes and Yes.

Just get the new Zandronum and install it into the folder where you keep the old zandronum.

It ought to just write over the old stuff, but keep the stuff that doesn't need to be replaced intact.

Lately, Doomseeker's been having issues displaying servers hosted from Best-Ever.  My first course of action was to check their list of banned IPs, and I wasn't on that.  So I started going through the options attempting to find any anomalies, but none seemed to pop up.  I have some reason to believe I'm not in a range ban, but I'm incapable of disproving it.  Before I go off trumpeting a range ban, though, I'd like to see if anyone has a similar problem or a fix.  Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

I can't get the second thing to add itself in, and whenever I try to load up a server, it just puts me in the menu.
The reason it won't let me is because of the zandronum version my MM8BDM game came with.

Best-Ever does not use that one. It (almost) always uses the latest version.
You have to download it from http://zandronum.com/download.
The easiest way is probably to get the archive download and just replace your zandronum.exe

Recently downloaded MM8BDM-v4c and cannot get Doomseeker to bring up any servers, I had to change the zandronum master list address to the most recent one: "master.zandronum.com:15300"
Although in the tutorial it says you need to setup the "exe" path I have a client binary and server binary, these are not mentioned in the tutorial so I just put: "C:/Users/owner/Downloads/MM8BDM-v4c/zandronum.exe" for both

I'm still not getting any servers after following the tutorial, anyone got any tips?

Also I suggest the translation of this tutorial in French. Maybe it's a good idea!

I did get your message, yes.
To answer it here, no, don't really want to play right now [an hour ago]

If your problem is that you can't download a lot of wads or pk3s because of data plans, it's kind of tought to say but you're probably playing the wrong game, mate.
Almost all of the servers run at least one mod. Even the most popular vanilla servers of Duel and TLMS run mods to help make the game more enjoyable.

Again, my only suggestion is to join a server with people on it. You could attempt to populate a server by joining it and waiting around for people as well.
Asking people to play on a forum very rarely works unless it's planned out far ahead as an event.

What version of Zandronum do you have? It should say it on the MM8BDM window whenever you open it and the servers are using 2.1.2

(click to show/hide)

Also, make sure you have the path set to the right Zandronum executable, which should be placed inside your MM8BDM folder.

Make sure you downloaded the archive and that you extracted the contents of the .zip into your MM8BDM folder. If it asks to replace any files, then go along with it.

Try refreshing it. If that doesn't work, just reclose it and reopen it.

I realize I left a disclaimer in the current iteration of the guide (currently in the OP) but it wouldn't hurt to edit the reference to MM8BDM-v4c to MM8BDM-v5a (assuming a v5b update isn't going to come out in short order) now that it's out.

Hmm....I followed all of Mike's steps as for installing and configuring Doomseeker, but I get this when I search for servers...

<NO RESPONSE>

And then when I click to join, it says "Data for this server is not available. Operation failed."

I'm rather late to the online party. I don't know if Doomseeker is still relevant at this point. Can anyone please help me?

There are usually some servers that don't respond that can safely be ignored, but you should also be getting good servers as well. Are you querying the Zandronum Master Server?

I don't know if I queried it correctly. I know I put "Megagame" into the search box and also filtered it to specifically look for Zandronium games. All the <NO RESPONSES> I see are Zandronium-based. I don't recall see any servers outside of that.

I don't know what I did wrong but I fallowed all the steps as you suggest but when I double click on one of the servers It just reopens the Doomseeker application. It could be the fact that this is 7 years ahead of this post or maybe something I completely missed.

I did everything but all I see is a bunch of Servers for a game called Painkiller, and one server for a game called Mega Man World. No MM8BDM Servers.

Face palm. THOSE ARE THE MM8BDM SERVERS
They are mods for it. Painkiller are hosting services, Mm8bdm being hosted. Mega man world is a coop mod for MM8BDM. Please pay more attention!

That's because TSPG is gay and now all of their servers need Zandronum 3.0-Alpha (170416-0710), You can get it over at the Official Zandronum Website (http://www.zandronum.com/download), it should be under the Development Builds tab, If i were you, i would just wait untill V5B comes out this monday, but if you really wanna play, feel free to download (Remember to make a copy of the old version too because 3.0 doesn't allow free look in single player), I Hope i helped.

Greetings, Cutstuff Forums:

I've been trying to set up a private server for me and my friends to connect. I followed all the steps correctly, and my server does show up on Doomseeker, though the name appears as "<NO RESPONSE>", and the IP appears different. I know for sure that that's my server, seeing as when I shut down the server and relaunch it on a different port, the port on Doomseeker changes to the exact same one as well.

This is my first time doing something like this, and I'm not sure if I messed this up or not. Anyone know if I did something wrong? And if I did, how do I fix this?

I regret to inform you that whenever I try to join a server this message pops up...

Script error, "8bdm_jampack-v3a.pk3:c-bon04.wad:MAPINFO" line 7:
Unknown property 'UsePlayerStartZ' found in map definition\

...and then it displays this.

Script error, "mm8bdm-v5b.pk3:actors/player/megaman-flags.txt" line 2:
Expected '{', got 'Ignition'.

... I swear I followed the directions perfectly but, for some reason that keeps poping up.
If you could help me with my problem I would be very grateful.

You need to upgrade your 8BDM and Zandronum versions.

First redownload 8bdm: http://cutstuff.net/public/MM8BDM-v5b.zip

Extract it into your 8bdm folder and overwrite all files. Don't worry, you won't lose any save progress or settings.

Next, do the same for the latest beta of Zandronum: https://zandronum.com/downloads/testing/3.0/ZandroDev3.0-170806-2040windows.zip

The last step will not be required once V5C hits but we have no idea when that is happening.

Pretty much all servers should be running 3.0 now, grab it from here: https://zandronum.com/downloads/zandronum3.0-win32-base.zip and extract it into your mm8bdm folder. Make sure doomseeker is pointing to the right zandronum.exe (in the mm8bdm folder you just extracted to) and uncheck the testing releases checkbox.

I got one server to work after i redownloaded Zandronum though others didnt work but i think that might be due to them requiring linux or version 3.0-170901-1140 (When i redownloaded Zandronum i get version 3.0-Alpha)
If this isnt the case then it might be something else, With the servers that it didnt work on at the bottom right corner of the blue screen i previously mentioned it says (2.8 Pre-441-G458E1B1) and next to it 170625-1906 Im not sure if this numbers have to do with anything. And just thought id mention this but the blue screen i mentioned sometimes pops up red dont know why though

Whenever I try joining any server on Doomseeker I always get this error:

Script error, "MM8BDM-v5c.pk3:cvarinfo" line 5:
cvar 'mm8bdm_mapcards' already exists

Remove 'mm8bdm_mapcards' and all other conflicting cvars from your ini and restart Zandronum to continue.

I'm using the current Zandronum release and tried deleting the said lines but nothing changed. Any advices? :)

===EDIT===

Seems like it is something with my Doomseeker settings, because manually setting up the joining through command line works fine. Only Doomseeker has problems.

===EDIT===

I found the answer. The Doomseeker was stupid enough to try to add some of the files two times, obviously creating already existing lines in the process. It doesn't cause troubles for me, I simply using the Doomseeker's gathered informations about the servers to manually join them without running a 3rd party software for the same. :)

I'm just trying to run a LAN server so I can play with my friend on Hamachi, I got Doomseeker set up and working, but when I try to run the server it tells me I'm missing PLAYPAL. I looked this up and found out it's an issue with Doom 1 or 2 wads, so I download the wads I need and put them in the Zandronum directory, try again, and it still says I need PLAYPAL. Any suggestions?
EDIT: New issue, originally once I got everything set up the servers were showing up fine, but then I hit refresh and suddenly nothing shows up
