I believe so...you just don't have to specify a port number...

Don't quote me on that, I've never tried.

Add -upnp to the extra command line parameters box. Also sometimes the server doesn't show locally. Type sv_showlauncherqueries 1 in the server console and wait a few minutes. If a line comes up that says "Launcher challenge from *ip address*" it should be visible.

It IS possible to host a server without a router.  In fact, it's easier....sort of.  Here's the catch though.  Most of the time if you're connected directly via DSL, then you have a firewall enabled (or you SHOULD if you don't).  That firewall will prevent your server from showing up since it will block all incoming connections by default.  You need to make an exception for either the port (default 10666) or the program (skulltag.exe and eventually zandronum.exe) in order for it to freely be able to accept connections.  Keep in mind, you still need to do this even if you have a router, but if you have one, then you can also freely disable your firewall since the router acts as one through NAT.

Note: This generally only applies if you are doing PPPoE on your computer (you have to run a program to connect to the internet).  If you just turn on your machine and connect, then it's likely the DSL modem is doing NAT and you might be more limited in terms of hosting options.

Hope that rambling helps.

Keep in mind a router will NOT make it easier unless you kinda know what you're doing.  It's an ADDITIONAL thing to configure, not one less thing.  One word of advice, if you do get a router, you NEED to do PPPoE on the router and not the modem.  If you have no idea what that means, you probably won't have luck setting up a server.  I'd be happy to explain in more detail if you like. (On wtf PPPoE is etc)

Sort of.  Each port on your computer is a connecting point that allows it to talk to the outside.  Firewalls prevent data from the outside from making a connection with your computer without your consent.  Generally when you open a website, you're using port 80.  In this case, the web server has that port open and will freely allow you to talk on that port.  Your computer pulls information down, so even if you have a firewall, the information is pulled through.  It's kinda like an exclusive club, only those on the list can get through unless they're led by the person who owns the club.  Routers confuse the matter even further by adding yet another layer of protection.  You don't need a doorman once you're inside the club generally (which is what a firewall would do behind a router) which is what most A/V vendors try to sell you with their internet security stuff.  Once you get on DSL, It's like having a doorman for a doorman for a doorman...it.....can be pretty silly if it's not configured correctly.
