Title: Helpful Links for New Players *EDIT 08/18/13*
Post by: Tengu on March 29, 2012, 08:15:33 PM
Hey kids, it's Tengu

This is so we get more online players that need some links to helpful areas all in one spot.

The first thing you need, obviously, is the latest version of MM8DM! The latest version is V3B, which can be found here:
http://cutstuff.net/mm8bdm/?p=194 (http://cutstuff.net/mm8bdm/?p=194)

If you are running MM8BDM off of a MAC, Please go here: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2337 (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2337)

*NOTE: Currently, there is not a mac build for v3b.

The next step to playing online is getting instructions on installing DOOMSEEKER! Remember, you can't play online without a way to connect. Found here:
http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=728 (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=728)

For a tutorial on how to use and install Doomseeker, look here: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=5246 (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=5246)

EDIT: I have noticed a few people having some problems with Doomseeker. If this is not working for you, I recommend IDE (Internet Doom Explorer) Which can be found here: http://doomutils.ucoz.com/load/1 (http://doomutils.ucoz.com/load/1)

If you can't see servers on doomseeker, or whatever you use to connect please note that the MASTER SERVER has changed. IF you cannot see servers, please go here:
http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=3475 (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=3475)

Now, you should see a list of servers in here once it's all configured. I'd like you to direct your attention to the ones with the [BE] Brackets. These are the Best Ever servers.

For information on these servers, please check with this thread: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=5229 (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=5229)

The next thing you are going to want are the very popular Map packs, Mod files, etc. That's where the fun is. Here are the ones you're mainly going to want. If there's one you had trouble finding that I have not provided a link to, just ask for the link to be posted.

This was made for players who haven't played online at all yet. We were hoping to get the launcher banner updated with a link to this thread, which could be used as "tech support" for people who don't know how to configure the game for online.

This topic links to tutorials, as well as skin packs and weapon packs.

Though I am surprised to see my skin pack here.

The purpose of the other thread is for people who can't find WADs.

This thread's pretty much just linking to everything.
I'm also pretty surprised to see Forte's skin pack here.

Again, I would like the banner on the launcher to lead to this thread, and for it to be sticky.

Despite common belief, I can't sticky anything that isn't in the Projects forum. Only Mike can sticky things anywhere else. Like here.

Title: Just to make this easier for the Mac users who want the game
Post by: theanjo on August 17, 2012, 10:06:37 PM
You should add the Mac tutorial to this topic because a bunch of homies have been asking if the game was for mac. I believe it is still in the help section buried somewhere. It would be wrong to keep this game away from them.

EDIT:
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2337 (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2337)
That's the link to the Mac Port topic.

Okay, so I'm a newbie posting this where I think it best belongs. I'm trying to join a MM8B DeathMatch server on Internet Doom Explorer. I've used IDE to play online with an abundance of other mods from Brutal Doom to Armageddon 2. But when I try to play MM8BDM, I get an error that says "This server requires a special version of Skulltag/Zandronum. Do you wish to install it?" I click OK and get an error saying "Can't get file http://zandronum.com/download/files/tes ... indows.zip (http://zandronum.com/download/files/testing/98e/SkullDev98e-3216windows.zip)" Like any idiot, I tried typing the URL in my browser, and got a 404 error. I'd much appreciate it if someone helped me fix this, and if you need any more information I'd be happy to provide. For everlasting peace!

Make sure you are using the version of Skulltag bundled with MM8BDM and not Zandronum or a later/earlier version of Skulltag. However, servers marked with [BE] [Automated] require the use of the current version of Zandronum, somake sure you are using the correct file at all times.

Hope this helps!

Make sure in IDE's options, "Check for WAD's" is unticked.

Wow, that actually worked. I disabled "Skulltag autotesting" and finally got to blast some guys in 8-bit... online! You know... I feel really weird putting online in the same sentence as 8-bit. Either way, thanks for the help!

Edited due to Saxton Hale's rising popularity, and I've seen a couple users asking where to find some content for it.

Welcome to the forums, then!

Tango's first post (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4202) pretty much explains what's needed for 8BDM currently, but if you want to know what the community members are up to, you can usually find out in the later pages of the Spamthread in Anything Goes. (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=9)  You can also see what's going on for the latest MM8 expansion over here. (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=4111)

Hope you enjoy your stay~!
