Title: [Bug?] Story Mode - Stuck in MM5's introduction cutscene
Post by: SebaOutbreak on September 23, 2022, 04:01:01 AM
Hey there! First off, it's been years since I last played MM8BDM. I decided to come back to it a few days ago to try the V6 launch, and also to re-visit the story mode, which I remember being pretty fun and with a really interesting story. So I've been playing these past few days but I encountered a problem, which I think is related to the auto-save function of this mod + a certain accident I had:

So, I finished the MM4 chunk of the story mode a couple days ago and closed the game. I believe this is when the game auto-saved on its own for the last time. Today, I decided to keep playing, and I managed to play all the way from MM5 to MM7. The problem: While playing one of the MM7 levels (Slash Man, iirc), I had to pause the game and alt-tab for a few minutes. Big mistake! Cause when I tried to go back to the game, I only got a black screen, with the music still playing in the background. I couldn't get it to work so I closed the game.

When I opened it again and selected "Story Mode", I noticed that Dr. Light's cutscene with Mega Man and Rush was ready to play, or in other words, the introduction to MM5. All of my MM5, MM6 and MM7 progress was nowhere to be seen. Mercifully, I used the regular Doom save function every now and then just in case something went wrong with the mod's autosave, so I managed to use a savefile I had made just before playing the MM7 levels, therefore I played through them again and continued the story. Smooth sailing from here, right?

Or that's what I thought... after finishing the MM7 segment with the Bass fight at the end, I went back to Dr. Light's lab and... the MM5 cutscene, yet again, ready to play. And when I stepped on the platform to choose a level, it didn't allow me to select anything past Charge Man, or in other words, it wouldn't let me replay any of the levels I had *just* played.

Sooo... I'm stuck in some sort of loop. If I keep playing, and then I go back to the lab, the game will just take me back to that cutscene - the levels won't unlock for me even tho I just played them - and both the regular autosave from this mod and the classic doom save/load function don't seem to work, or at least none of them save any progress that happens *outside* Dr. Light's lab/this game's hub. I don't know where the actual auto-save takes place in the game's files, and either way I wouldn't know how to modify it in order to, idk, set the flag for MM8 intro cutscene (or whatever comes after finishing the MM7 segment), which is where I should be now. Then I recalled these forums, so here I am, humbly asking for thy help.

I'd hate to start from scratch because of a bug/glitch/whatever this is, it's not a whole lot of hours, but I wouldn't want those to go to absolute waste. If anyone knows any way to fix this, that'd be awesome.

Any kind of help is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Could you open up the console by pressing the Grave/Tilde button? ( ` or ~ , same button)
Inside that, type in "mm8bdm_saveprogress" and hit enter, and let me know what that says. That's the variable that tracks how far you're supposed to be in the game.

After that, you can try typing "mm8bdm_saveprogress 1070" to skip straight to the MM8 chapter.

I asked in the devchat and it seems the prevailing theory is that it's got something to do with the usage of the "Save" and "Load" function in Zandronum. It doesn't tend to play well with the game's systems, so it might have caused your issue. Sorry about that.

Hope the console command works, and I also hope you enjoy the new content!

Hello there! First, thank you for the quick and detailed answer, I appreciate it a lot.

Right, so I went to the console and typed "mm8bdm_saveprogress", and the result was "1040". So I guess most of my progress was definitely lost after that situation I had with alt-tabbing + forcibly closing the game.

But good news! Typing "mm8bdm_saveprogress 1070" worked wonders and now the MM5 cutscene is no longer there. Everything prior to MM8 is unlocked, and a new cutscene is awaiting me now. Eureka! I'll try to stick to the game's regular autosave feature from now on, and I'll definitely won't be alt-tabbing again.  ;)

BIG thanks, Korby! I had a feeling there was some sort of console command that could help me with this, but I had no idea what it could be, specially since MM8BDM has its own line of coding and unique commands. I can now continue my nostalgia adventure thanks to you, and I'll be sure to check out the new content!

Thanks again! See you around!
