Silent Hill 2: strange ringing noise

Hey, I have a question about Silent Hill 2.
Okay I opened the box with the hair inside it, and when I went into the hallway. All of a sudden a loud ringing sound started. I thought it might be that a new enemy noticed me like how the nurses can be heard, but nothing was in the hall way. I thought that it might be the "call button" alarm and that Maria might've pressed it so I ran to check on her, but she was perfectly normal, and the cutscene dialogue cancelled out the sound. Was that something anyone else experienced as well? Is it just a glitch? I'm legitimately confused, because I can't really find any mention of it anywhere.
