Question about skin positioning (not sprite positioning)
« on: November 01, 2010, 05:24:19 PM »
Greetings, I was just curious if there was a way to reposition where a custom skin is in the player menu? I really wanted to group the skin I made to be with the proper game and not always be right next to Mega Man. Is there a way to do this?

You'll have to insert it into the pk3 but we can't do that...

and the launcher doesn't work properly with skins.

I was afraid somebody would say that. Hopefully a new method will arrive somehow (or at least just the ability to sort skins.)

...not too likely actually. There were many cases in other doom mods that sorting skins would be a godsend, but as far as I can tell in my long doom career, there is no way to do it externally.

I was afraid of that too. And to think, the skin I have could have been official... oh well.

Yeah, it's kind of an oddity...  SKININFO lumps are read independently, thus if you have two lumps with the skin name "Dr. Wily", the second one will get renamed rather than the skin itself being overwritten as in the case of BOTINFO lumps.  Now, if you could overwrite SKININFO lumps, you could make a big SKININFO lump that had your skins arranged exactly how you wanted them.  Why this hasn't been suggested at some point is well beyond me...  Sure would make my life easier, I must say. (I...have an obsessive-compulsive organization thing.)

It's probably because you can simply drop the console and type "skin skinname" to pick a skin easily.

I too am very ocd about how my things are organized.  I really wanted the Break Man skin to be in between Doc Robot and Ring Man (I'd also like my modified Blizzard Man skin to go back into it's rightful place of between Dark Man4 and Flame Man.)

I'm not trying to invalidate your statement, but not everyone knows about the console.  Then again, not everyone knows they can switch skins or even their name, now that I think about it. (I helped someone in a server a couple weeks back with both, actually.)  Still, just a thought.

At the very least my modified skins show up fine order-wise in Dr. Light's lab, which is a great relief. Too bad there's no way to fix them in the player setup menu, but such is life. I'm happy enough to have all my modified skins visible online.

Wait, what?  You can access custom skins in Dr. Light's Lab now?  Explain.

I use modified skins of Crystal Man, Blizzard Man, Centaur Man and Wind Man. So custom skins show up ONLY if they replace one of the default skins.

Adding them through the launcher creates a duplicate SKINXX skin which can be selected that way...
