I just experienced a true "whoa" moment for this thread.  I was just playing Mega Man 3, which is one of my favorite games of all time, and I've owned it on NES since I was a small child--I play it at at least once a year or so and have played it so much it wouldn't be a stretch to say I've completed it more than 50 times.
But yet, just now, for the first time, I discovered that you can actually move the Hard Knuckle up and down while it's in flight if you hold one of those directions.  Holy crap.
I also just noticed that if you use the Mega Buster with Rush Jet or Coil out you can only have two shots onscreen at a time as opposed to three, i.e. Proto Man in MM9 and 10.  I don't think I ever knew that...

And Snake, I'm not sure what you mean.  I'm pretty positive you're just used to seeing him on an old TV where your colors were imperfect or on old screenshots that look a certain way, because I'm almost positive they've been using the exact same, unchanged Mega Man sprite from MM1-10.

MM8BDM Discussion / Re: Camping
« on: December 13, 2010, 10:28:12 PM »
camping can be silly but is really useful for roboenza.  I mean,  you want the zombies to not touch you, and to make it so they can't reach you until either they die or take too much damage-- so logically you're going to find the safest place, pick the best weapon to stay safe in said place, and hope for the best a lot of the time.  Unless it's a map you know very well that it can definitely be pulled off in, you're usually not gonna be running around if, say, you're the last or nearly-last survivor and there are many zombies.

i actually love how in team fortress you have the engineer and sniper who are two classes usually devoted completely to camping in a very tight corner, but then you have the spy which is a class designed more or less above all else to harass and destroy those two classes (and anyone else trying to camp)

Mega Man Discussion / Re: Favorite Fortress Boss?
« on: December 11, 2010, 05:12:12 AM »
I know it's probably a "generic response" but for sure, no doubt, the Mecha Dragon from MM2.

I mean, outta nowhere  this huge thing appears behind you, you sweat and struggle to stay on the blocks you're jumping at into the void of darkness hoping it doesn't chomp down on you as you come to a small vertical row of blocks and hear the boss music start up and an energy meter fill, and you know that on these small platforms you must face your foe.  The way it moves, the way it roars and spews massive waves of fire at you, the way the entire screen flashes each time you nail it in the eyes, the way it explodes gloriously lighting up the whole room, and the fact it's a flippin' DRAGON.

They've yet to make a Wily boss as iconic as the Yellow Devil or Mecha Dragon.  They try again and again and again to copy the Yellow Devil in Classic and beyond (the best variation being MM8's Green Devil) but they don't seem to even try topping the Mecha Dragon.  Maybe kinda in that big whale boss from 9 or the crab in 10 (which was admittedly pretty cute and fun), but none of them are anything compared to the Dragon.

Mega Man Discussion / Re: Favourite Classic Mega Man Title
« on: December 11, 2010, 04:59:56 AM »
Weird, I could have sworn I replied to this thread already...

Well, my overall favorite is 3.   Best music, the awesomeness of the Doc Robots, introduced two of my favorite characters (Rush and Proto), some of my favorite bosses of all time (like Magnet and Snake), and the best title theme of any video game of all time.  2 is of course  a close runner-up but it has so many annoying parts, and otherwise is super easy (espeically on Normal) whereas 3 is good, solid challenge throughout.

9 and 10 are also very close contenders, 9 has some of the best music ever and feels very, very much like a direct sequel to 2 more than anything, almost like we'd gone back in time to 1988 yet with some more modern things like the Challenges and DLC.  There were lots of annoying parts but they were all very skill-based where with practice they become easier, whereas in 2 I don't know if any amount of practice would make the Quick Beams or especially Wily 4 less annoying and dreadful.  And besides, there were items to buy that made 1hko's less scary.  10 is even MORE fun gameplay-wise, and the music is superb though some of it is a little on the "deep" side (i.e. Chill Man) like it's a bit hard to "digest" when playing a Mega Man game... and the master weapons are WORTHLESS compared to 9's super overpowered ones for the most part, but still quite fun (especially Triple Blade and Rebound Striker!) ... plus, 8-bit bass :3

those are some great screens.  Aside from the Diveman one, I especially like SUPER TRANSFORMING STONEMEGAMAN and sparkman kissies :3

MM8BDM Discussion / Re: Im not the "Flandre" some people think I am.
« on: December 11, 2010, 04:13:55 AM »
i know or know of about 30 people online for each and every name of every touhou character ever

a million flandres
a million patchoulis
a million marisas
a million cirnos

if you're gonna use a touhou name, expect a lot of other people to use the name.  it's kinda getting to the point at which it's like using a name like Sephiroth or Goku

There is. That's the new official request thread.

I saw that the second I made that post.  Now I feel stupid~

first of all, speaking of SRB, is there a link to any spriterips or is it easy enough to get the sprites from that game oneself?  Because it'd make for some easy and good skins for 8BDM...

Secondly, I'm thinking maybe there should be a singular thread for requests, rather than a bunch of these scattered "skin request" threads.

MM8BDM Discussion / Re: Usefull Expansion Pack (For custom content)

I actually think it's logical that he posted it here.  Technically things like the text color codes and etc are general Skulltag things before MM8BDM-specific things, yet they're still discussed here because a lot of people who play 8BDM would make use of them and may not know about them otherwise.

Like, I'm super glad about the clean screenshots, personally. <3

MM8BDM Discussion / Re: Roboenza Frendly Maps
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:15:44 AM »
Welll, it's an idea, and I'm not against it really, but I'm not sure if it's really needed.  Honestly, I'd rather just get rid of a few of the DM maps that are really notoriously bad for Roboenza such as Wave Man and Gyro Man, or maybe have a list of maps that are especially fun with it like Knight Man and Elec Man.  I think the prospect of Roboenza maps is kinda neat but I'm not sure if it's really necessary, especially with the MM7 maps and oh-so-fitting Shade Man's stage presumably coming pretty soon.

You definitely have permission to post all two skins made by me at the time of this post as well as any and all future skins (or other things!) I may make from this point on.

Skins & Bots etc / Re: Skin challenge: Who's gonna take it?
« on: December 07, 2010, 04:37:01 AM »
You sure this is supposed to be a "challenge" and not just a clever rewording of a "request"? :3

It doesn't look like it'd be that hard.  Already Mega Man-ified, with clear starting points for hurt and attack states, and I've already seen many skins with more or as much detail.  I'd say it wouldn't be too hard for a lot of the skinners here...

I'd take it myself, but I'm already making several skins and I'm not sure if I'd yet do it justice as well as some other people here.  If no one else takes it for awhile, I might try regardless.

Mega Man Discussion / Re: The Classic Megaman Series in TV :D
« on: December 06, 2010, 03:59:33 PM »
Yeah, I watched this as a kid, but it was weird-- I loved, and I mean LOVED the Mega Man games, but barely watched the cartoon (whereas my step brother never really played Mega Man but was REALLY into the cartoon).  If I recall correctly it was because it was kind of embarrassing to me, even though I loved watching it I was embarrassed of what people (particularly my big brother) would think, and I was  like 9 years old at the time it was on, so, y'know... I had to look cool and watch only grown-up shows and play Mega Man X, all that kinda thing.  How silly I was, seeing as now I'm 24 years old and openly watch Adventure Time and Regular Show.

I've read a bunch about this show though and the creators made it really cheesy with plot devices like the Lincoln Memorial, puns every 5 seconds, and generic or really silly voices for the characters purposely, as part of the fun.  It was to be an homage to all those cheesy 80s cartoons with similar styles, and considering the NES Mega Man games it was based on were something like '87-'91 in release (it had no reference to MM6 afaik) that style would be pretty accurate for the characters anyway.  Supposedly they were having loads of fun with it and really wanted to continue it, too, but goodness knows every time there's a cartoon that people enjoy making and that has some semblence of quality it has to be taken off air immediately (especially back then, where it was getting to that point where almost nothing worth watching animation-wise was on for a good 10 years except stuff brought over from Japan on Toonami and such).

But yeah, check it;

Watch from about 0:04 to 0:07.  Check out how the designs are very close to Inafune's drawings and look blasted awesome in animation--that's supposedly the "beta" of what the cartoon was going to be, before they made it sort of "altered" for American kids at the time and likely to make it feel more like an 80s Western cartoon.  I actually kind of applaud their decision to make the characters stylized despite obviously knowing the original designs (whereas the creators of Captain N: the Game Master, I heavily believe, made it a point to never, ever look at a single image or Inafune's Rockman art) and really making the series their own, but overall I think I'd have much preferred them go with that beta idea.  Man, I've always wanted a cartoon series or anime like that, like Super Adventure Rockman but as an actual animated series... I almost wish they'd do a short animated thing for these new-retro games, instead of just the 1-chapter-long manga that of course only exist in Japan.. Oh, well!

INB4 TL;DR

Mega Man Discussion / Re: Mavericks or Robot Masters
« on: December 06, 2010, 03:40:27 PM »
Well, I love both groups for their own reasons, but I definitely gotta go with the Masters if only because I like Classic overall a lot more than X.  And I've never played an X past 5 (at least yet) whereas I've played all the Classic games very, very thoroughly.  Of course, that's not saying I don't think MMX1-3 don't have some of the coolest boss designs in the history of video games (with a few silly exceptions like Overdrive Ostrich, but don't get me wrong, I love his stage and music!) and that Armored Armadillo may just be my overall favorite boss from all Mega Man series combined.

But yeah, though it's obvious in "serious story speculation" the Mavricks would wipe the floor with the Masters, seeing as their technology is a hundred years more advanced and they're created by all kinds of humans and even probably groups / organizatons, rather than one crazy old man.  However, if you wanna get more "fan universe where anything can happen"...

Storm Eagle makes little poofs of wind and cool-looking but small, stubby little cyclones.
Storm Owl is just silly.
Air Man instantaneously forms MASSIVE WALLS OF MINIATURE TORNADOES AND CAN DO IT ONCE EVERY COUPLE SECONDS

Gravity Beetle has a lot of flashy effects and can pull you around.
Gravity Man can completely reverse the gravitational pull of anything around him for many meters, severely damaging anything that his weapon can't outright send into space.
Galaxy Man, with a similar weapon to how Beetle's actually works, can create miniature black flippin' holes, not just little gravity wells.

Chill Penguin is actually pretty cool and can make huge blizzards, cute ice penguins and slide and stuff.
Chill Man is even cooler can jump into the middle of the screen, go all Matrix on you and let loose barrages of ice missiles.

Frost Walrus is a big fat slow thing that's impossible not to be able to easily dodge given the ridiculous maneuverability you have in the X series.
Frost Man is GONNA CRUSH YA if you don't spam his weakness.

Spark Mandrill lights up like Lite Brites and climbs around the room like a monkey, sometimes punching the floor and making little sparklies appear.
Spark Man continually assaults you on his freaking impossibly-terrained room with a constant barrage of both saturating mini-spark barrages and massive balls of raw electrical energy thrown in your general direction.

Blast Hornet shoots bees.
Hornet Man shoots far, far cuter bees.

etc

Mega Man Discussion / Re: Your marathon fight times!
« on: December 06, 2010, 03:24:24 PM »
I'm not even going to try getting any specific times, but the longest I ever fought a Robot Master was almost definitely Galaxy Man in 9 for that very achievement, and I ended up stretching it way longer than the achievement needed just in case.  Something around 25 minutes.

I also recall figuring out the "trick" to Gemini Man in MM3 NES (your shots trigger his actions) and fighting him for a long time, practicing ways to hit him and dodge him, when I was a kid.  I would not be stretching it to say I fought him for 10+ minutes on one occasion.  And similar things happen when I have a breakthrough regarding any Robot Master tactics, such as finding out how to fight Snake Man without getting hit once just a few years ago after all that time, or figuring out all Freeze Man's patterns when I was younger.  The newer (9 and 10) games have patterns that are really easy to catch onto and abuse, but maybe that's more about me being older and finding them easier to discern, or the fact many of the achievements FORCE you to utterly master all their battles.
