IMPORTANT! READ THIS
We reserve full right to accept or deny any maps. If you want your map to be accepted into MM8BDM, you must be a part of this mapping competition. I guess I'll sign up. If I win, I get one or two shiny medals and good mapping experience, and if not, I can get info on how to improve and make better maps in the future.

Plus that Concrete Man medal looks totally awesome

No, but I would prefer uniqueness.

You can get all the help you want, but only one person who submitted the map can earn the medals

Ah yes, thank you for reminding me. This is purely 2-teamed CTF maps. At this time, MM8BDM will not be including 4-team CTF maps.

That might complicate things when there are two major contributors submitting the map. Anyway, I'm signing up for now, but I may drop out if I don't have an idea and Smash doesn't want to team up.

It's not fair to everybody else that a person could get the exact same medal for doing work on only half a map that everyone else would for doing work on a full map.

Well actually the plan is Smash does the layout, I do the actual map and make any tweaks I desire.

So technically I will have made the map, just not really conceived of it.

You would get the medal for making and submitting the map.  SmashBro would get nothing. (Or at least, that's what I assume)

Yeah, pretty much. I just didn't really want him to feel left out. (Honestly, if he doesn't want to, I actually find it perfectly acceptable and normal. Of course, it IS Smash, so eh.)

Aargh, wish I had started practicing mapping sooner. ;-;

Guess I'll sign up for now and back out if I'm sure I won't have any time for this later...

Edit: When you say "Three paths to the flag", do you mean three paths directly into the flag room, or three paths to the general vicinity of the flag room?

I guess I'll sign up. I'm most comfortable with symmetrical maps anyway.

Now I do wanna as though, whats "Flag-Stopping" mean, seeing as two of my favorite weapons at listed as it.

You can't exactly pick up a flag with Flame Blasts all over it, and they're flat out OP for a carrier running away.

I didn't even think of the shooting them at the flag. Shouldn't Danger Wrap be on the list too then?

Also I take it Rush Jet and Eddie are a big no no also?

lol dangerwrap on CTF01.

Anyways, Taboo Weapons updated. Do note Taboo Weapons ARE NOT restricted. I just discourage their use due to potential CTF breaking.

I'm signing up for this. Since I've "cancelled" my CTF map pack, I should be able to use something from it. Of course, I'll have to work on the one I choose because of previous complaints (most of which were right).

Which is strange, I'd think he would have hard time running flags.
Maybe he has a soft spot when it comes to defending the flag room?

Because, I just did addbot for that image, and it just happened to be Hard Man. And he's crying because there isn't enough CTF love. He may be hard, but he has a heart of wet cement.

Well...

TECHNICALLY the person that designs the map is the architect, so technically, you would get Concrete Man.

Not that it actually matters. =P

Alright, let's make it even better.

Since HD is the one submitting, he is guaranteed the Proto Man medal... and when I win, I'll scoop up Concrete Man as my own.

Or we could lose miserably and I'll just get Proto Man when AwNet is finished. :p

EDIT: Oh, is there a particular theme I have to adhere to? Or can it be anything as long as it's CTF and somewhat "Mega Man"-ish?
Also, how many "Doom units" wide are the ice blocks in Blizzard Man's stage, and how wide are the boat edges on the same map?
Quote from: "SmashBroPlusB"
Yes, I was intending for players to occupy a space of about 1.6 squares; one square would be a small / skinny platform like the edges of Blizzard Man's boat, whereas two squares would be a "comfortable" area for a player, like the large floating ice blocks on that same map.
Quote from: "xColdxFusionx"
Fun fact: That's actually the exact same scale as Doom Builder's default grid. [/themoreyouknow]

•1 Flag CTF must be supported <- this
•Stages must be symmetrical

•Custom Music is optional, but will not be judged

When I said 3 routes to the flags, I don't mean into the flag room itself. Look at examples like Edge of the Dam. There are 3 general routes you can take to get across. That's what I meant.

•There must be at least 3 paths to the flag = Ivory explained this, there must be at least three paths from one end of the map to the other.
•2 Team CTF only = 8bitDM supports up to 4 team CTF.  These maps will be going into the Vanilla game so they want to keep it classic 2 teams.
•1 Flag CTF must be supported = Doom supports 1 flag CTF, which is a special CTF mode where you must bring the white flag to the other teams flag to score a point.  The white flag is often to be put into the middle of the map.

Also, there is one issue I see with this mapping competition and thats none of the submitted maps will be including any of the MM8 stuff being added to the expansion.  But thats not too big of a deal.

Nope. No splitting medals between two people. By that logic, anyone who had "help" could do the same.

Themes are free to be anything, so long as it uses vanilla textures and I would prefer it to be unique from the current maps. And yes, Megamanish is a good bonus.

Generally, you don't want 64 unit platforms over death areas. That's why Edge of the Dam v1 sucked so much. I suggest keeping platforms at least 128x128 (or 4 blizzard blocks). I'm not sure how big those boats are off the top of my head.

@fortegigasgospel

Yeah, I know. That will be problem. But I'll give the chance to all mappers that get maps in to update them with MM8 content if they so desire. My MMCTF10 had the same problem with lacking non-freeze cracker mm7 content.

It doesn't work that way, get over it. If you want SmashBro to get the medals, he has to be the one who entered. Not HD.

If I "enter" but HD makes the map do I still win?
Title: Re: The "Show some Love for CTF" Mapping Competition!
Post by: Ivory on May 02, 2012, 07:22:53 PM
I would prefer the contestants map it themselves, but it's unrealistic. I have no way to prove or disapprove if someone did get help or didn't make the map themselves. That's why I'm allowing help to occur. The person who signed up is the one who would be rewarded the medals. So yes, if HD makes the map, and allows you to submit it. It's going to be your submission, not HD's. I wouldn't invalidate it and if you get accepted / win, you would earn the medals, and not HD. It's only fair, I can't allow contestant to do something and deny the others of the same privileges.

On another note, this filled up more than I thought it was. I may decide to close submissions at 30. 30 is a lot of CTF maps to judge.
Title: Re: The "Show some Love for CTF" Mapping Competition!

So, then technically, I can submit two maps by submitting one in my name and one in Smash's?

On a more serious note, I will allow Smash to submit the map.

It's CTF. The plan must be bigger than that. With less than 8 or so people, it really isn't easy to judge CTF maps.

Post by: Ivory on May 02, 2012, 09:57:25 PM
I lack any final plans. But this is what I've been thinking of doing:

All the maps are compiled into one file. Meanwhile a sign up sheet is provided for players to sign up to play and vote on the maps. We would they play a large CTF game on every map. Everyone who signed up is then allowed to vote for which map they think is the best, and which maps they would like to see in MM8BDM. On top of that, there will be a trio of judges. They hold more weight to their vote. So far the judges consist of myself and Roc's Creation.

When I said 3 routes to the flags, I don't mean into the flag room itself. Look at examples like Edge of the Dam. There are 3 general routes you can take to get across. That's what I meant.

Yes, that's correct.

New Rule Update:

You are now permitted to use custom textures so long as they are from MM1-10 or &Bass. No custom textures from scratch, no DOS or MMV textures. Only from those games. Fair enough?

Well except MM8. We can't be handing those ones out.

Because there is more to getting a map done then just getting a map done. I'm giving loads of time for going back and tweaking it and such. I can guarantee someone who takes their time and goes back to the map to fix it up will have a way better shot at winning.

And don't be smart with me. I said MM1-7, 9-10 &Bass if you want custom textures. That excludes MMI-IV and anything that isn't MM1-7, 9-10 and &Bass.

If they're Crystal Man style, you haven't made two floors.  You've made two rooms linked by teleporters.  It's only logical it should count as 5000.

Distance travelled is a more important element to consider than time. Mendez's average time taken to get from one flag to the other was 30-35 seconds. Traps in CTF05 increase the length of time getting the flag without changing the size. Which is why a size cap is important. (Maps can be too small, too. 06 is a classic example of CTF mapping failure. If it was submitted at this time I doubt it would be accepted.)

R&F textures have been ripped by NemZ. CopShowGuy has ripped Endless textures from 9 and 10. Splash Woman textures can be found in Ryuga Knight's map pack. TBG pack has used some of the endless textures and has a few texture recolors in his map pack; X-pack contains Needle Man recolors. You can probably find any stage from 9 and 10 at vgmaps.com if you want to go the long way. If you want a cool skybox, look at the "sunset" skybox used in official target maps.

If you want a good model to use from the existing CTF maps, use 10. 03 covers the basics well also. TBG03 and XCTF02 (Corvus Keep and Molten Mountain, I believe) are not stock but also play fairly well. I could highlight obvious flaws in 01, 02, and 06 if anyone isn't aware of them.

Then forget &Bass textures. But understand this. These maps are for the vanilla game, and you should be sticking to vanilla content as much as possible. The more vanilla  map is, the more likely it will get a pass on getting into MM8BDM.

Savior and I worked around with the idea of how long the quickest route should take. Our estimates say the sweet spot is somewhere between 15-18 seconds from one flag to another. Of course, you would have to consider that rarely do people go on such a fast run unless they were playing classes CTF. What's more, they would get deservedly pummeled for taking such a quick run if they encountered an opponent with a powerful weapon.
Truth be told, you should be worrying more about weapon layout than general layout. Focus on giving each weapon a significant purpose, rather than placing a weapon there for the sake of placing it there. Simple example is placing Search Snake on a map with a lot of height variation, or Yamato Spear for those long & narrow corridors.
And then you have to consider weapon tiers, and how people will tend to stick to a stronger weapon even if the weapon doesn't work for all situations. Best example I can come up with is Knight Crush in Ice Base. Sure, you have water wave and air shooter there, but such a powerful and convenient weapon as Knight Crush makes the rest of the weapon layout seem null. I dare you to tell me that Crash Bomb gets more kills in that map than Knight Crush.

Best choices for custom music would probably those Megaman ROM hack music (for a pre-existing song) and those Megaman free stages made by a bunch of people like HertzDevil, Kevvviiinnn, InterrobangPie, etc.

I can't tell whether CTF leans in favor of the offense capturing the flag or the defense camping the flag.

I'd think defense since the defenders spawn around the flag room and they merely have to touch the flag to return it.

But in offense's favor, the person running there has more opportunity to grab powerups and stronger weapons, and combat in this game is likely to completely miss him him while running away.

So needless to say, the mode and maps should favor offense just so matches don't end in stalemates.
Came up with two concepts to help offense in case it really is extremely ill favored:
Team teleporter: It is the teleporter texture colored a team color. Only that team can take it. Originally intended to be put in flag rooms so the capturer can grab the flag then be put right outside the flag room. A similar thing can be seen icy forts and victory isles.
Defend flag until it returns: A concept from TF2. Defenders can't return the flag merely by touching it and must defend it from being grabbed until it returns to the base. Due to the difficulty of hitting people in this game, defenders can receive some favor by having their vicinity prevent flag pickup.

Personally I think maybe an extra path through the grav rooms would touch it up, I didn't know about the paths on the far side for a while and I don't think many other people know about them either.  Other then that Clockwork Factory is my favorite Vanilla CTF Map.

There's actually a new path through the middle of the room.

Can there be large amounts of flat area? My Yamatoman themed map seems to have them, although there's another CTF map that was mostly flat (it was the sea base one).

My map has flat areas as well, but they're mostly for decorative purposes.

On another note, I know this is pretty minor but I already discussed it in Skype. Should we add a Yasichi to the map?

You can use them, but like I said before, this is supposed to be for the vanilla game, and part of being vanilla is working with what MM8BDM already offers.

Unlike the other AOEs its got no added effects over its raw power, but it doesn't have the ammo to down anyone with a full gauge, also the delay before it comes down.

Where as CFlash blocks shoots, Ghold is powerful in elevated and lower grav areas. And obviously we know why Time Stopper is a no.

I'd say 16, cause 32 is max so 16 players per team.

Though my map has 64 player starts, 16 Blue, 16 Red and 32 Deathmatch. Yes, I made my map able to be played in DM. Its better for CTF but I see no reason to have it only ctf.

The map I made was completely bland and too straight-foward, based off of just one idea. I blame the fact that I can't make anything unique when it comes to mapping.

That being said, I'm dropping out of the competition due to real-life complications and severe insecurity.

I'll try to be open for the day that works best for the most people. I'm giving two weeks to test the maps. If for whatever reason nothing can be decided upon / no one shows up. The winners will be selected purely by the judges.

So, like, it's alright if other folks in this competition ask each other for help, right? Because I've seen at least 8 of the maps that might be in the competition, and I've given some feedback to each one.
By the way, I kinda have some questions about the day of judging. Will someone record our matches? What will the point limit of each match be? Will the matches have a timelimit so that each map gets a fair share of attention? Who's the 3rd judge? When EXACTLY do you plan on handing out the testing wad? Will it be one hour before judging? One day? How about the number of people playing on these maps? Will there be a limit of 32, 24, or even 16? Can the general public opt to join in testing, or is it competitors-only? Who will host the maps? What time do you EXACTLY plan on having the judging start? Will Shady get to play, or will you opt to make the testing time comfortable for YD? How influential is each competitor's vote? How influential is each judge's vote? How many maps will get into the expansion? In the case of a voting tie, what will be the tiebreaker? What will you do prevent vote rigging? Will there be a Skype call for everyone to talk in? Can there be a Skype call among the competitors? Have you gotten tired of these questions yet? If you said "no", does it feel good to lie like that to yourself?

Will the mappers be allowed to exit their stage textures to acomidate for the new avalible mm8 textures? Just curious if the ctf maps will be set in stone as soon as the judging is decided, or if theres even any ctf maps already planned with the MM8 textures used.

So, like, it's alright if other folks in this competition ask each other for help, right? Because I've seen at least 8 of the maps that might be in the competition, and I've given some feedback to each one.
Yep, it's perfectly allowed. Mostly because I have no way of proving or disproving if someone made a map without any help whatsoever. So instead I'm allowing it. HOWEVER, getting help from the judges (myself or Roc) will result in being disqualified. Since tweaking a map based on our opinions is unfair to everyone else.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Will someone record our matches?
I wasn't sure if it should be recorded. If someone wants to volunteer, that's just fine with me. But I wasn't even show how many people watched mikes recordings.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
What will the point limit of each match be?
Depends on how many maps we have to go through. I'm thinking 5 points unless pretty much every entry comes in, then 3 points.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Will the matches have a timelimit so that each map gets a fair share of attention?
I wasn't considering it, but perhaps 15 to 20 minutes. Again, it depends on how many entries come in. The more entries, the less time we can spend on each map. I doubt anyone wants to play CTF for hours on end.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Who's the 3rd judge?
The 3rd judge is a secret to everybody  :ugeek:
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
When EXACTLY do you plan on handing out the testing wad? Will it be one hour before judging? One day?
Testing Wad will be available an hour before the planned time.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
How about the number of people playing on these maps? Will there be a limit of 32, 24, or even 16?
I'm opting for 16. 8 vs 8 is a large game. However, if there is a enough of a crowd, 24. No way I'm going for 32. Way too much for CTF Matches.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Can the general public opt to join in testing, or is it competitors-only?
Yes, but competitors get priority seating.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Who will host the maps?
Mess
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
What time do you EXACTLY plan on having the judging start?
Tune in for next the next poll
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Will Shady get to play, or will you opt to make the testing time comfortable for YD?
Depends on the outcome of above
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
How influential is each competitor's vote?
Each person who votes is worth 1 point.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
How influential is each judge's vote?
Judges votes are (tentatively) worth 1/3 (rounded up) of the total number of unique voters. So if 12 people voted, a judges vote is worth 4 points.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
How many maps will get into the expansion?
Mr. X and myself have new CTF Maps that are getting in regardless, so in addition, I'm saying 6 to 10.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
In the case of a voting tie, what will be the tiebreaker?
Purely the judges call.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
What will you do prevent vote rigging?
Hmm. I'll need to think about this one.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Will there be a Skype call for everyone to talk in?
If someone wants to host one, go ahead.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Can there be a Skype call among the competitors?
Likewise, if you want one, go ahead.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
Have you gotten tired of these questions yet?
Nope, not really.
Quote from: "Bluebrawl"
If you said "no", does it feel good to lie like that to yourself?
Does not apply since I said yes.

I stand behind my vote for the morning because I want everyone (i.e. Everyone in the Contiental U.S.) to have enough time for playing and judging these maps. Goodness knows it might take hours to go through all these maps, and I'd find it rather inconvenient for east-coast folks such as Ken and Messi to be playing at midnight while we're out playing at 9 P.M. Play it in the morning, and we'll have PLENTY of time for 16 folks to play through 20-25 CTF maps at 10-20 minutes a map. Even better, we might be able to show the results on the same day. Don't you want to wake up with a Concrete Man medal below your avatar, Shade Guy? Don't you?

Alright, so the judges have all be finalized.

1) Myself
2) Roc's Creation (Ice-IX)
3) King Yamato (Asd967)

Also a reminder that you have less than a week to get your maps in. All maps are due June 10, and I will stop accepting them after midnight (pst). Failure to get them in on time will result in disqualification unless you have a notable reason for being late.

The judgement day is June 16th, time will be worked out in the next few days.

Just a reminder that tomorrow the contest ends. If you are unsure on how to get an entry in. You can either use an upload and PM me the link, or if you have me on skype, I'll accept it that way too.

Any entry not received will result in disqualification unless there is a notable, specific reason for being late.

Currently morning / night is tied. So something is going to have to break the tie.

Yes, but competitors get priority seating.

Title: way more entries than what I expected.
Post by: Ivory on June 11, 2012, 07:42:12 PM
Now then, change of plans. I have 19 entries that we need to go through and vote on. 19 maps is just way too much to chew for one sitting. So instead the plan is to break it up into 3 days worth of CTF Maps. We would be looking at 6, 6, 7 maps over the course of 3 days. I think 6/7 maps a day is far easier for everyone to chew.

Voting wouldn't occur until after the final testing session on 3 days. In which case you would vote for which 6 maps you want to see in MM8BDM and the grand prize winner (so technically you are voting for 7 maps to get into mm8bdm. 1 grand prize winner and 6 other entries.)

Also due to the 3 day spread, I think it's better to get this started sooner. Perhaps even tomorrow.

What does everyone else think?

I somewhat agree on this, playing 19 maps with the point limit set to 5 or 3 (whichever) will take quite a lot of time. Personally I have no problem with splitting the days up as I am completely free. We just have to make sure that the people who entered can make it to the testing sessions.

Yes Ivory, tomorrow would be awesome to start. Just a quick question though: Does this mean we'll have to download three seperate wads for each of the testing days, since it's easier on everyone to download 7 MBof uncompressed musicrather than 19, or will you just give us the full testing wad tomorrow?
Also, I remember telling you about naming the maps so that not everyone knows who made which entry. Will you rename the maps and give out a simple map code for each map (i.e. CTFCOM##) or will the original map names/codes remain intact?

Title: Re: "Show some Love for CTF" Mapping Compo! {Testing Details

3 separate wads. Smaller and easier to download. All the wadnames/level codes will be uniformed. Not entirely sure on the naming sequence, but it will be LLL##. I'm also thinking evening works best for both me and KY. Since I have to juggle the contest around my work schedule and KY told me he wouldn't be able to be around until the evening. I also think its best for everyone to get the contest over with sooner, rather than dragging the time between the contest and actually doing the judging by over a week. Get it done while everyone is motivated.

The biggest thing I'm trying to figure out is voting. Because as it is, there is just no way to make this fair. There will always be an aspect of whatever system I come up with that would be considered "unfair". In any case, voting would be occurring at the end of the third day. If anyone has any ideas to suggest for voting systems, feel free to post them.

The current solutions was either to only have the judges and contestants as voters. Or the former + sign ups for public votes

Even though it's been happening less often, When playing online sometimes it says connection interrupted, i can't move and my ping skyrockets up and sometimes becomes negative, so if that happens during this, i'm screwed. (not out of winning, but still that would suck)
EDIT: yeah, for all the maps that don't get in those maps should be put in a reject map pack.

Anyways, about voting.

Everyone will be allowed to vote. Voting occurs after the third set of maps. I'm only accepting votes from "regular community members". I.E. I won't count PMs from people I've never heard of.

You will be voting for 7 maps total. 1 grand prize winner and 6 additional maps to be accepted into the v3a (mm8) update. Contestants cannot vote for their own maps.

Just posting my thoughts on the maps we played today so I don't get confused and forget later when the time comes.

CTFC01 - Tunnel Network - Solid map, good weapon choices, floor to floor action is good. Only complaint is I wish it wasn't an underwater base cause we have like 3 of those rolling around now!
CTFC02 - Sacred Shrines - Good map except for one fatal flaw: Rain Flush is too easy to get. You end up just spamming it near the flag having a massive defense which stalls the game.
CTFC03 - Lost Temple - Nice map but I think it has too many easily accessible ripper weapons, making it VERY HARD to get the flag in it's flat room. There's also a few windows that you can't jump out of without dying that aren't too obvious. Also I never saw anyone go for the star crash, mainly cause it's too tricky for such a useless weapon in this open map.
CTFC04 - {Redacted}'s CTF entry - Fun gimmicky map but very cramped on the race track and the roaders simply cut off the only OTHER way to get to the flag. I would suggest either making the roaders damage you less (by copying the actor and reducing it) or have only one path cut off by roaders (each side).
CTFC05 - Sky Castle - This one was really fun! Lots of places to go etc, different paths to take. Only problem I think is that near the flag there's too many ways to easily nab it and get away, i.e just jumping off the ledge into the fans. Made it very hard to track down the one who picked up the flag. Otherwise, great!
CTFC06 - Crystal Crater - Very cramped map with a very hard to get flag. Because of this, I think star crash is too strong here. Layout seemed okay though!

Okay, so the Rain Flush thing may have cost me the competiton (I knew there was something bothering me when I submitted to Ivory) which means that several days of my masterpiece work is about to go down the drain, but I picked a few issues with a few other maps:

Tunnel Network: I get massive FPS drops whenever I add bots, making it unplayable for me.
Lost Temple: Again, I get FPS drops whenever I add bots, making it unplayable.
{Redacted}'s CTF entry: It would be a lot better if the path was clear on one side and full of Turbo Roaders on the other side.
Sky Castle: I found some texture offset errors, and the fans are a bit wonky to work with, but if you add "Block Monsters" to the edges, it will stop the bots from falling to their deaths.
Crystal Crater: Like Tunnel Network and Lost Temple, I suffer from FPS drops when I add bots.

I wasn't able to make it for the judging last night, but everyone's maps are definitely very cool!  The level and quality of work that went into each of them was really amazing!  The Sky Castle and Crystal Crater maps were probably my favorites of the group.  Sorry my map turned out kind of unprofessional, though.  I guess it never crossed my mind to make up a title for it!  I agree with everyone's criticisms, too.  It would need a LOT of polish and probably heavy modifications to be MM8BDM material.  :p

Judges and Competitors will be playing first. There will be no public allowed and we'll go through the maps on our own. After we do a round of that, then I will release the wad to the public to join in and play. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So many of these maps have multiple floors, we desperately need to figure out a way to make it easier to track where the enemy and ally team flags are. Something to look into for the future perhaps.

Doesn't this map, somewhat, cover that?

Multiple floors, you can track whos below/above you (understanding its not all the time), its even kinda like a way to make the main room, seem less crowded with projetiles flying across your head.

Time for my comments on each stage, except for weapon balance since I'm apparently not that great at that:

Spaced Out: I acually like this stage. The moving space outside was a nice touch.
I'm a fish~: No Yashichi. :( I get FPS drops when I add bots, but it's not as intense as Tunnel Network, Lost Temple, Crystal Crater, or Deserted City as mentioned below. Also, what's with the hilariously random name? :p
Double Castle: I don't know what to say about this map, except the Dr. Light side has some red textures, which might confuse some.
Triple Trouble: No Yashichi. :( There's some weird texture screw up on the lower moving walls in the center of the map. Also, why are we recycling MM7 Wily 3 music?
Clash in the City: Why does this map have the exact same music as Tunnel Network? Also, we only need one Yashichi, not two.
Deserted City: No Yashichi. :( When I add bots, my FPS dies and makes this map unplayable.

IIRC, there were weapons dropping into pits in Spaced Out. I think it had something to do with the moving platforms...

That texture screwup may not be fixable after looking at it, a lower unpegging may mess it up worse due to the sand.  As for the music possible for file size? Music takes up space.  And not everyone is good at going out and finding music to add to their maps or able to loop unlooped songs they want to use. Besides didn't they say the music wasn't to be judged?

Quote from: "Beed28"
Clash in the City: Why does this map have the exact same music as Tunnel Network? Also, we only need one Yashichi, not two.
Just means both people found the song and thought it fit their maps.  If both get in I'm sure the team will change one's song.

Onto my comment:
CTFC07 - Spaced Out: The skybox effect was neat and the music is nice and relaxing, but honestly, this one doesn't really stand out to me all that much.

CTFC08 - I'm a fish: I really like this one, my only problem is the having to climb ladders to get to the flag.

CTFC09 - Double Castle: I'm on the fence with this one, it doesn't really stand out that much to me.

CTFC10 - Triple Trouble: I see what you guys did, Double followed by Triple.  Onto the map. Its ok, the gimmick is interesting. Not much else to say.

CTFC11 - Clash in the City: I actually do enjoy this one, just never take the water path if you have bots on, they will get stuck in the Hyper Bomb room and just bomb the hell out of the middle room making it near impossible to take the lower path.

CTFC12 - Deserted City: I don't really know what to say about this one other then the impossible to play with bots.

I forgot to name it, so Ivory did for me based on an inside joke.

One of the main non-texture complaints I get about my map seem to be the ladders to the flag. I'm pretty darn sure I'm not allowed to edit my map, especially seeing as we've already tested it, but if I lowered the height of the flag and made the ladders tractor beams instead, would that help?

YOU made "I'm a Fish?"

I don't mean for this to come out wrong, but I was actually somewhat disappointed. :?

Also, I actually liked the ladders. One of the problems of CTF is that nobody wants to be the Team Mom and babysit the flag, and with the simplistic design of bases these days people can just run in and WHOOP -- now the flag's gone and FUCKIN' EVERYBODY is trying to chase after the thing.

With the ladders being there, it helps the few defenders do their job better. Knight Crush is a great tool to use when defending, but Super Arm can also get the job done. I'd prefer if you put Ring Boomerang or Dust Crusher somewhere just to make my life easier, but I'm not complaining.

Now, even though I thought the ladders in the base were a good idea, I didn't like the shape of the upper level. It's practical, yes, but it also looks hideous what with the Attack Of The 20-Foot Ladders sticking up in the middle of the room with nothing else in it to make it look prettier. I also found the middle section lacking. While I thought the lower path was very well made, the upper glass-floor part was boring and the outer part with Super Arm felt "tacked on", what with your floating perfect squares with no missing edges or funky elevation levels.

Honestly, if the side areas were changed up / removed and the bases were made to look less bad, this would be one of my favorites (if not THE favorite) of the map simply due to playability. Personally, I don't care if a map doesn't have catchy music or a gimmick around every corner as long as IT PLAYS A GOOD GAME OF CTF.

That's my two cents, anyway. :ugeek:

I doubt that would help, Korby, as you could still be knocked backwards out of the beams.  To be brutally honest, to me, that map is one of those that's fundamentally flawed to the point that it would be easier and better to simply start over rather than trying to fix what's there.  It's horribly open on the top floor, the bottom floor has low gravity for no reason making it annoying to move around, the outside portion is kind of just there, the ladders in the base make it annoying to get to the flag, I could go on and on.

Mr. X (besides saying what I did in a nicer way) brought up something I forgot.

LOW GRAVITY IN THE LOWER PATH. WHY YOU DO THIS.

If you need to jet up to the upper path, put in some more tractor beams like with Crystal Eye, or shove in more ladders, or put in a Gyro Fan or two. The whole area doesn't need to have floaty jump space boot syndrome, especially since the ceiling was so darn low it just made jumping pointless anyway.

But yeah, I actually liked the low path. And the bases.

The rest was bad though.

I guess, maybe gyro propellers instead so it just pushes you up instantly?  Not to sure.

On that note I didn't get to play yesterday until the public release although I'm a contestant., not that its too big of a concern though.

Oh, how is voting going to take place? Personally I have a few maps in mind that I'd love to see get into the core, but I don't think they have "best map" material. Maybe there could be a general "get into vanilla" vote, then a map from there is nominated as champion?

Now that I've finally played them all, I think it's fair that I comment on the rest of them:

CTFC07 - Spaced Out - Really good flow on this one, even with the low grav sections.
CTFC08 - I'm a Fish - I think the flag areas are a little TOOOO hard to reach sometimes, and it's easy to camp on when search snake doesn't even get up there. Also the water is a little un-obvious that it's water.
CTFC09 - Double Castle - Team spawning problems aside, this one is pretty good too!
CTFC10 - Triple Trouble - Even with the gimmicks I think this one is a bit too cramped, and it feels like you'd always favour going the middle route (through/around the sand) to get to the flags.
CTFC11 - Clash in the City - Good but the hyper bombs make it VERY HARD to get the flag sometimes!
CTFC12 - Deserted City - Huge and awesome, lots of things to make it so you can't make a b-line straight from one base to the other. Only thing I didn't like was the huge ladders that take ages to climb.
CTFC13 - Turbo Rumble - Looks nice but there's waaaaaaay too much flat ground here and no super ranged weapons to support it (MM8BDM lacks weapons that cover huge range sadly).
CTFC14 - Fleet Footed - Interesting one. It's flat but the tricky holes make the flag holder have to slow down, which works well. Only problem, stacking on top of people to climb on top of the map for safety (although I admired the team work!)
CTFC15 - Aeration Sun - Great flow, good weapon choices, solid map. Not sure if the ladders at the flags are necessary but it didn't make it too hard to grab the flag.
CTFC16 - Castle Seige - Good map, star crash kind of dominated the flag areas sadly though.
CTFC17 - Cliffside Clamour - Probably the best map flow in the competition! Only problem is it's a liiiiittle too small for those huge CTF parties. Also the middle area rarely gets used because of the ladders that slow you down.
CTFC18 - Irate Pirate Ships - Uhhh... well ONE time I got on a wave bike and didn't crash and immediately die!

My comments on the maps:

Tunnel Network – Not a bad map, but the top feels a bit needlessly complex compared to the bottom.
Sacred Shrines – Rain Flush kills the map. That is all.
Lost Temple – My framerate dies whenever I look into the middle. Loving the SCII theme here, though.
Bondman's CTF Entry – Instead of entirely blocking off one team's flag, couldn't we have one garage on each side open?
Sky Castle – Love the gimmick. It feels a bit slow, but that's probably the engine's fault.
Crystal Crater – I thought it was a pretty good map. Fairly well laid out, looked nice texture-wise, overall solid.
Spaced Out – The skybox looks really cool. The multicolored “fog” was a nice touch. Feels a bit complex, but overall I like it.
I'm a fish~ – “Hey mommy! I can use 3D Floors!” ...Cynicism aside, not a bad map. Top feels kind of bland and open, though, and climbing a long ladder to get to the flag gets a little tedious.
Double Castle – ...Doesn't really stand out much. Just feels like a more complex version of Victory Isle.
Triple Trouble – The gimmick is really clever, but the lava is a bit obnoxious to get out of.
Clash in the City – The Hyper Bomb doesn't really do its intended job. Other than that, not a bad map.
Deserted City – ...I see what you did there with the name. Not a bad map overall.
Turbo Rumble – Very cool-looking.
Fleet Footed – ...Why are people allowed to get to the roof? Other than that, I thought it was fairly well executed.
Aeration Sun – Overall solid map. The music is good, though it doesn't sound 2A03, but we're not judging that. Neat use of textures to make the two sides feel subtly different despite the symmetrical layout.
Castle Siege – Reminds me of a paintball/laser tag field. Fairly good map, although Star Crash eats people alive.
Cliffside Clamour – Another really good map, though all the different paths make it a bit difficult to keep track of who's where.
Irate Pirate Ships – …Let's just say Best of Best Maps Ever is going to have a field day with this one.

Overall, good job, guys! Most of these maps were solid and would work well as add-ons if they don't get in, and the ones that weren't were still fairly fun to play.

Supposed to avoid that room when the lava is up, it was intended to be the center room at first to make people want to go around but then I'd have to have had to do something about the white flag being in lava half the time.  There is still an issue with the white flag, I'll mention that in a second though, but I do intend to fix it even if it doesn't make it in.
But an idea for the lava, if you fall under the middle floor, you are dead, you can't get out. But if you fall in and land in the middle, run backwards, the lava hurt pushed you backwards every time it hurts you so you can keep a steady pass if you are running that way, the hurt can even push you up ladders.

As for the white flag for SFCTF, if the flag returns to its starting point while the sand is at its peak it won't appear on top of the sand, I don't know why, by the second the sand starts moving down it will be there.  There are two ways I can fix this, make the sand an actual floor (I think I'm using it as a 3D floor atm) (but sadly that wouldn't work unless the entire platform the flag was on moved too), or place the white flag on a raised platform that moves along with the sand or just stays up above anyway.

As for this, I thought about maybe the people who's maps don't make it into vanilla fix problems with there maps and make a CTF map pack with them. We don't have enough CTF map packs.

That's it all you Mega Man fans. The Competition is over. We're done here. It was a fun and I learned a lot about running competitions from this experience. If I ever do it again, I have some ideas of how to improve most of the aspects. Handling Votes, Judge voting power, time frames, testing, etc. What would be next? No idea, all I know is I have no intention of doing this again until after the MM8 expansion is done. Competitions are a handful to manage.

Awesome idea! We can play these as much as we want! Also means no work goes to waste! :D

I quite enjoyed Savior's map, save for a few frustrating jumps and non-8-bit music. Uki's map was playable and eye candy at the same time. Sora's boats weren't much to look at, but still fun nontheless. I wouldn't mind playing on any of those maps again.

Next time we have a competition like this, I'm gonna try when I get better at mapping. I'm disappointed that I had to drop out.

I really think there should be a Cutstuff Cummunity CTF Map Pack with these maps to get things started.

That sounds like a great idea, as long as maps can still be submitted into it.

Durrrr I wonder why I hadn't even bothered joining the testing or tried finishing my map?

Very, very awesome!  Congratulations, everybody!

Here's a creepy .GIF of celebrations!

Also, a compilation of the left-over maps sounds like a very cool idea-- that way no one's work will go to waste.

Wow, I think I have a pretty good taste in maps. All of my votes (but one) ended up ranking as finishers, and I even predicted the top winner. Very nice!

I'm still bummed that Beed's map didn't make it though, but I guess the "WE COULD USE SOME RAIN" sort of spelled out its fate.

5 of my 7 votes made it in.
the two that didnt make it in were Secret Shrines and Bondman's CTF Entry. I loved the idea behind Bondman's map.

6 of my 7 made it, with Beed's being the one out (Yellow Devil being the one replacing it).  Also, congrats to Shade Guy:  The best map truly won.  That map was truly amazing!

I do believe this is for Shade Guy.
Anyways, it was a load of fun just looking at the entries and talking with a lot of the folks about their maps. Personally, I would love to have seen more love for Duora's map, but third place isn't anywhere near bad. Congratulations to all the entries that made it into the core.

Haha, I saw you post that picture on Skype last night and was gonna dig it up. I also checked out the results about 10 hours ago, but didn't get a chance to post until now. Many thanks to the folk who thought my entry was worthy of being the grand prize winner, and without those people I would eat a cat. And I also wouldn't have this spiffy medal. Because it's all about the medals.

Incidentally, 6 of 7 of my votes ended up being in the top 7 in terms of core-worthiness...Although looking back, it would have been impossible for me to get 7 out of 7, considering I wasn't able to vote for my own entry >.>
I must say, I had a lot of fun playing through these maps, and I felt a little disappointed seeing that a few maps I also enjoyed didn't end up getting in the core. Nevertheless, big thanks to Ivory for organising this whole thing (plus for judging along with Roc and King Yamato), and successfully getting everyone to show some love for CTF.

Another person worthy of commendation would be BlueBrawl and his entry, Aeration Sun. An excellent entry; the level of texture soup attention to detail in terms of visuals (106 textures compared to my 44, cripes), weapon choice (Wild Coil worked surprisingly well here and Pharaoh Shot can't go wrong) and <third example> (I can't think of a third thing to compliment, sue me) secured my vote for his entry to receive the grand prize. The map reminded me of Underwater Base X due to the two's similar levels of compact-ness, which I don't neccessarily see as a bad thing. It did end up becoming a little clustered once the test server ended up reaching 10+ people on each side, but hey; situations like that don't pop up too many times.

Further props to Nemu and Duora Super Gyro; Turbo Rumble and Sky Castle also ended up being up there in my favourites. These two were perhaps impeded by excessive open-ness (due to as CMM noted, a lack of MM8BDM weapons suitable for such a design) in the former entry's case and 'dinner tables', along with a somewhat complicated layout in the latter.

...And I can't really be bothered naming any more names, so great work everyone else. I would post some further comments about the other maps, but most of what I would say would end up be repeating what most people have already said. I'll be looking forward to seeing those other 6 entries being played in MM8BDM V3 and onwards. Reach for the stars and further generic positive comments.
Damn I'm lazy.

I made changes to the weapon layout based on what YD said.
I also added some more color to the inner part of the stage.
But I dont really know how to fix the textures.

I feel as if you should make the fans' area of influence just a tad bigger. When hopping over / across fans it's not a problem, but if you're under a fan it's sometimes hard to jump precisely into the upwards current. Sometimes you just do a short hop because you're too far out, and sometimes you're too inward and you smack your head on the fan's bottom.

The main offenders of this are the fans in the bases. It's a little too time consuming to use them, sadly.
