It's come to my attention that a lot of people are making their own custom music packs for MM8BDM. Some of these contain original 8-bit scores or music from other classic titles. This is perfectly fine.
However, I've noticed an alarming amount of music packs that contain mp3 files from OST's of games. OSTs that you usually have to buy. This is essentially the same as warez, and thus clashes with one of the forum rules:
KEEP IT LEGAL - Do not post or link to warez. Self explanatory, do not link to free stuff you should have to pay for.
Sure, they're packed away in pk3/wad format or whatever, but anyone with half a brain can figure out how to extract them and convert them back into their regular format. Because of this I will be removing topics containing these packs completely from the board. People should also report any posts that contain these links, and of course if you've posted a link that I haven't found yet please have the courtesy remove them yourself. I will also remove topics that I ASSUME are from ripped straight from OST's unless proven otherwise afterwords (specify how it's free in this topic!).
I know this is going to anger people but I simply can't have warez here now that the game is fairly well known. If you feel I've removed some important info from a topic that you didn't obtain in time, please let me know and I will fetch whatever you require from the bin. I also have no problem with these packs personally, and you're free to discuss, upload and link them... But not here. I hope the other moderators can concur with this and offer their support.
Feel free to discuss but don't expect this decision to change.
-
Wuh-Oh. This is bad...
-
Wait, I got the soundtrack from here...-LINK REMOVED-
Does that count? Thanks for telling us about the music packs, though.
-
I'll take down my music packs by myself, then since I'm not quite sure they're fully legal. (Although, I do find irony in doing this on a site dedicated to hacks using characters without the parent company's permission, but such is life)
-
I appreciate the rule 'n all, but couldn't you have let us take the .wads out before our nuking our threads?
I know we could just ask for stuff back from them, but still...
-
Err, I don't THINK the Kirby OST is buyable, so I think it's legal.
-
I'm pretty sure it is, because it came with remixed tracks.

I know this is short notice but it's the fastest way I can do this and continue development as quickly as possible (I was half way through the new Roboenza version when I noticed this). As long as you can prove it's legal to buy the said OST I will restore the topic fully.
(Although, I do find irony in doing this on a site dedicated to hacks using characters without the parent company's permission, but such is life)
The way I see it is Capcom haven't sued my ass because they're pretty lenient towards fan based material. Not all companies are, and you know this from other big fan made projects getting shot down (usually at the prime of their development). No doubt there's some companies who don't like the fact people are using their music that they paid big bucks for and sharing it on the internet and would respond to it critically.
Think of it from my perspective. If there's a chance of one of these companies saying "hey uhhh ITS LAWYER TIME" I'd want to cover my ass as much as I can. Personally I think music packs are fine BUT I think it's safe to say that not many people care for all these tracks and would rather listen to their own music which they can obtain themselves. Also not to mention Skulltag is NOT an mp3 player! I don't understand why it's necessary to make these unless a modder needs musical resources, especially if you ALREADY have the tracks before making the pack. Go grab Winamp (http://www.winamp.com), make a playlist, turn the MM8BDM music off and enjoy.

That site looks very dodgey. I would search around for the OST on the web and see if you can find any sites with a price tag attatched (or even better copyright info)
-
I searched and couldn't find a place where you could buy the Kirby Super Star Ultra OST.
Mine's fine, yay!
-
Yeah, I know why you did it, and I know Capcom is very lenient. I just thought it was ironic. I would have done the same thing if I were in your shoes.
-
oh my what a mess, i knew there would be something tricky about downloading dem music packs :p
-
No worries Mike, I never intended to make Music Packs, nor to download Music Packs that contained Music that I never heard/never do want to hear when I am playing. In fact, most of the time I dont even listen to the in-game music and just listen to something else via Winamp or Windows Media Player.
-
Because music packs are so easy to make, why doesn't everyone keep them to themselves?
-

It may not necessarily be the DIFFICULTY of it, rather that someone may (for some idiotic reason) may not have time.
-

D'you know how tedious it is to make these things?
Besides, if a server has the Wads, fun things start to happen!
-
Guess what?
I browsed the internet, most of the songs in my pack are unbuyable (meaning you have to download them off the internet for free), and the buyable (able to be bought) songs are not copyrighted, meaning:
Yes, my pack is legal.
That's a worry off my shoulders now, whew.
Don't believe me? Go look for them in Google Shopping. In the BUYABLE songs, there are no copyright thingies...whatever they're called.
-
Because music packs are so easy to make, why doesn't everyone keep them to themselves?
To be honest, I released mine so whenever I host a server, I can play some different music. That's it.
-
This is an odd place for my first post, but you realize the Mega Man Classic games themselves have purchasable OSTs, yes? They're called "Capcom Music Generation: Rockman 1 ~ 6 Soundtracks."
-
Capcom (unity) has posted about MM8BDM on their blog a couple of times, which automatically tells me that using any of their 8-bit content is fine ;)
-
So therefore making the Megaman 9 & 10 music packs legal, right?
It is just music.
-
Well, I'm glad I didn't make any music packs. Then again, I rarely listen to music outside of the game unless I'm playing single player. It gets to be very inconvenient at times during multiplayer. Especially when you can't find the song you wanted and people start killing you. Even more frustrating in Roboenza mode.

I agree completely.
You can also "bind"
Say you want to listen to Cutman's theme in multiplayer, but when you type it in peeps start killing you.
To prepare yourself beforehand, you can do something in single player like...
Open console
Type in (with second pair of quotes, but not the first) "Bind C "Changemus cutmus""
And voila, just press it and enjoy.
-
Or, to save yourself a key, type it in pre-joining/match. If you wish to replay, console, hit the up arrow, enter.

That takes longer, Korb.
Just pressing the button mid-game is faster than opening console, pressing up, then enter.

You're talking about buyable OST... then, i don't have to worry about that.
Why? I want to release a RKS (Rosenkreuzstilette) Music pack and then i found this topic. I get a little worried about that because RKS is a buyable doujin game, but when i am seeing the earlier posts here (especially the google shopping one) ,i decide to search about buyable OST's of this game (and kirby game is buyable, megaman game is buyable, meh...)...
Google: Nothing
Google Shop: Nothing
Erka:es (Original website from the game): NOTHING!
So im thinking the OST IT'S FREE, the game not, and you can comprobe that on google shop. so i'm going to release an music pack of this rockingmusic from an AWESOME doujin based on megaman, with the best music evaar! and i am planning to release a music pack from RKS freudenstachel too, when the game is fully totally released.
OR IF I AM WRONG, TELL ME! (and i can evit a very big problem :D)

Now Galaxy, if it is buyable, you check for copyright.
Just letting you know before you release it, JUST IN CASE.
And any other packs that may have buyable OSTs.
-
WELL, LOOKIE HERE

The MMNetwork is commonly promoted on CapcomUnity, so if Capcom had issues with this, they would have shut them down a while ago.

Well, im seeing about buyable OST of this game and i dont find nothing related to this. (and i am translating as crazy the original page of the game, none...).
Obviously i'm going to give credits to the original owner (Erka:es), as same i'm not going to claim this OST as mine. so it's totally legal :D.
But in case i find it buyable, i'm going to search about copyright. And if i can't use the OST, i,m going to erase the topic.
EDIT: i found something interesting...
http://www.rockmanpm.com/?p=music/rosenkreuzstilette (http://www.rockmanpm.com/?p=music/rosenkreuzstilette)
Rockman PM is an official page promoted too by capcom. If the OST is buyable, then at least Erka:es would shut down that page a long ago. but the page is intact, so i have another thing to prove that the soundtrack is FREE.

and i can personally attest that if capcom has a problem with something on MMnetwork, they WILL stop it. (had to retract an interview i did with them around the time of the Chiptuned Rock Man CD release)
It is just music.
it's not just music, it's an art and a business. just because you can easily steal it in the comfort of your own home doesn't mean it's okay. think of it like this, which is worse: stealing something that someone spent money on (like a car), or stealing something that someone actually made themselves, purely based on intellect and musical ability?
it's probably easy to brush it off like it's nothing, but try making a living as a musician / composer first, then see how you feel about it.

I wouldn't mind. Heck, if people stole it, I'd actually feel good because that means people really like it.

So people who steal the music automatically like it more than those who are willing to give money for the art that they love?

...GOD DAMN YOU NINJA-POSTING!
-
well i've had my music stolen digitally (mp3s), physically(CDs from a show), and even intellectually (people posting it as their own work on myspace and such), and none of it is 'feel good' material.
-
Yeah, I released something with a song from DKCR, which I don't see a buyable soundtrack of anywhere. Therefore, 'tis good.
-
I check all official (not fan-made) songs, even official remixes, for legalities before I release them.
-
I assume if The X series soundtrack is legal, then any classic song mixed in X style, or any MMX8 themes would be legal.
But if capcom's fine with Megaman, wouldn't it be fine with an Ace Attorney OST?
This site (http://www.court-records.net) has plenty of fanmade AA games, songs, and sprites, so I'd think it would be legal.
-
Can I post Rockman 4 MI music pack???

-
So.... no MegaMan Unlimited music packs?
-
No, it should be fine to use Unlimited's music.
It's a fangame, which unless authorized by Capcom themselves who have the rights to Megaman, it cannot be sold.
-
Of course since I've only made about three music packs, I should be in the clear due to all OSTs of them not being buyable.

Ah, thanks. I got a music pack to upload from it then. It includes the 9 robot master stage themes and the boss theme
-
A map from CSCM have a Kirby's Dreamland 2 8bit-remixed music. The music is Dark Castle Theme. Is this count?
-
Does it count if the soundtrack is only available as an import if you don't live in Japan?
-
If you can purchase the soundtrack in any way, then it cannot be used in any work related to a mod.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- music packs
- map packs
- gameplay modifications
- skins
Import or otherwise.
-

What if it's from a site like Bandcamp, in which you have the option of paying money to support the artist, but also the option to get the soundtrack for free?
-
that's fine to use
