Title: [TUTORIAL] Join/create servers in the MM8BDM SGC Demo
Post by: CutmanMike on July 06, 2010, 09:03:13 AM
Should you be able to acquire the demo version (this will probably happen very soon ;)) here's how to create and join games using the MM8BDM launcher.

Before you do any joining though, you should probably hit singleplayer and set up your controls. Some practice wouldn't hurt too!

Making sure you have the right version

The ST team have decided it would be a good idea to not show older Skulltag versions (like the one bundled with the demo) on the master list, meaning you can no longer use the internal browser, IDE or whatever to get lists of servers. Yes it sucks, not my decision sorry.  :?

The Skulltag team has recently released a new version of Skulltag, which is good news for all but it's at a rather inconvenient time. The ST version bundled with the demo was an alpha version of 98c. Now the final build of 98c is out, people have started making servers with that version. Problem is, you cannot play if the server has a different version of Skulltag to you.

If you can't connect to a server and you get a message about an incorrect version, you'll have to get the latest one. Either that, or find a server running the ST build found in the zip. Awkward I know, but it's a small process that will die out as soon as everyone is running the latest version of Skulltag.

The latest ST is also important for Mac users, as ST now has a Mac port! Yay!

Get Skulltag 98c final here (http://www.skulltag.net/forum/./viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26001)

Joining a server

1) Run MM8BDM.exe
2) Type in the Host IP Address or name in the box.
3) Hit join.

Currently the launcher supports no server list or anything, but it will in the future.

Creating a server

1) Before you begin, make sure port 10666 is open on your router or no one will be able to connect. If you're not behind a router (I don't know who isn't these days) skip this step.
2) Hit host. A window will appear which is the server running. Minimize this to make sure you don't accidentally close it, because it will cut off anyone playing.
3) Tell everyone you want to join to connect to your EXTERNAL IP Address or DNS name (i.e something like no-ip.com) via the launcher. If you don't know how to get your external ip, simply go to http://www.whatismyip.com (http://www.whatismyip.com) and it will tell you.
4) If you want the server to show up in server lists (only in 98c final though (http://www.skulltag.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26001)), go to the settings at the top of the server window and go configure server. Then check the "visible to public" checkbox!
5) Done! If you want to join your own game, do the Joining a server steps above but connect to localhost. If localhost doesn't work, try your external ip address.

As you can see, I've tried to make this as newb friendly as possible. While you can use Doomseeker or whatever to host and browse servers, any server created in my launcher will not broadcast to the master server by default. As for hosting via other programs, you can give it a go but make sure you change the IWAD to megagame.wad.

I couldn't figure that out to save my life.  My friend and I wanted to have a one on one.

Hit the host button? :P You need to explain where you're stuck.

well I got that far, haha. And I'm sure that port is open. But when other people try to connect using the server IP, it doesn't work... I'm probably just too new to this stuff xD

Sounds like the port ISN'T open in that case, make sure you double check. If you get stuck tell us your router name/model and we'll go step by step.

Quick question:  Is there any reason why it has to be port 10666?

I think that is the port to the Skulltag master server, which is where you would want to broadcast your server to, unless you wanna play LAN or something.

Is there any way to save the server configuration? Whenever I exit the program or it crashes it resets back to default.

It can be any port, but the launcher is very limited and I didn't give that option.

Again, limited launcher's fault. You could probably get a launcher like SB (on my forum) which allows you to save configs. However, that particular one doesn't let you set a custom IWAD (which has to be megagame) but maybe you can work around it.

You could try Doomseeker or IDE for custom iwads, custom skulltag builds,  and saving/loading configs.

The only thing I can’t figure out is what IP addy the public play server is? You know, just get on and play random people? I know you can host and all, but how would others get your IP for connecting? I didn’t see any listing for IP addy's in the forums or anything. Please help this noob understand.

Download doomseeker / ide and set the program to skulltag. Then find a MM8BDM server and copy its IP.

Haha, wow more than 16 people?? I remember now COG and DTD had also put up servers, but I don't think they're 24 hour ones. Anyone who's willing to host should post!

Also, a big thanks to you Nam for hosting!

Maybe someone can help me out here.. >.<.

When I launch my server: Skull Tag says this when it's up, making me assume port 10666 is open.

IP address 192.168.1.3:10666
MD5 sum of skulltag.wad is 3068d69dab3cd6d1b9d5a34c2fd205d8
UDP Initialized.

But whenever one of my friend's tries to connect through my external IP, it won't let him through.. ;..

My router is a Netgear Model#:WGR614 v7

I'll switch it back to Free For All once I get home. You may be able to start a vote to switch the mode as I don't think I disabled it.

BTW, CutManMike, what all game modes are currently supported and working?

Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel (keep in mind this is a 1v1 mode so I'd avoid using that for now, as you'd get a lot of spectators). I think that's about it. More will be supported in the final.

Yes, I am sure it is the external. The 192.blaha.blah.blah. is my internal. But I'm not so sure how to open the port to 10666 myself. I just thought since Skulltag showed my internal IP with the port 10666 beside it; it automatically did it.

Why not a mode that's like steal the bacon, only its steal the Mettool?  Like, a little mettool runs around, and who ever has him in his hands for a certain period of time wins?  At least it'd give us an excuse to use the Mettools someone made (if I recall).

That would be a load of fun, I say. It would test the mobility of the Mettool-holder in a way that current deathmatches often don't encourage, as one must be careful not to get ambushed or raped from behind.

I guess I'm beyond newbish here, but I'd like to host a game for friends and family.

1.) How do I know where port 10666 is? What is it? How do I find it, and find out if it's open?

2.) I know my IP, but when I plug it in and press "host", it takes me to a blue screen where it tries to connect, connect, connect... and it doesn't.. why is this?

3.) I found a fair amount of bugs, Cut. I sent you an email with the list.

Love the game!

I'm not good with ports... so I'll just answer your second question.

The problem is that the port is not open. So yeah. You have to have your first question answered first.

It seems pretty pointless to sign your post with your name if we can clearly see your username.

To open a port, you have to go through several steps.  The first and easiest is to go to the control panel, and open up windows Firewall.  Click on "Add Port" on the exceptions page.  Type in 10666 as the port.

The second step is annoying and a bit aggravating if you haven't done it before.  Go to http://portforward.com/ (http://portforward.com/) and find the name of your router, and follow the steps it gives you.

After that, when you are actually hosting, make sure you give them the right IP address or they won't be able to connect.  Give them the one you see here:
http://www.whatismyip.com/ (http://www.whatismyip.com/) .  If it doesn't work, try adding a one in front of it (ie 98.xx.xx.xx becomes 198.xx.xx.xx), and if it still doesn't work, go through all the steps again.

Also, certain ISP's (internet service providers) don't let you forward ports on your own.  If you have one of these ISP's, you may have to call them.  For example, my ISP is Cavalier Telephone, and they don't let you forward ports on your own, so whenever I want a new port forwarded and opened, I have to call them and ask them to do it.

I sign my name not with the intention of being reckless with its use, but because it's a formality.  Suppose I'm used to doing this because I have a Degree, own a small business, etc.  Though explaining that might be pointless because I'm here for the purpose of receiving informal help, rather than proving a point that need not be proven.  Therefore, I will sign my name if I damn well please.

Regarding your instructions, they led me here and there, but the procedure is much more complex than you explained, Namo. Yeah it is pretty aggravating. I may need to read further into it, or receive first hand instruction.

Thanks for your help!

I have hunch it's because of this rather damn inconvenient decision: http://www.skulltag.net/forum/./viewtop ... 16&t=26039 (http://www.skulltag.net/forum/./viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26039)

^If this is the case, you should still be able to connect to server just fine. Just not see them in the master server list

The internal browser is kinda crappy, it displays all servers for that current version. Some (like yourself) used this to find MM8BDM specific games but now they've pulled the plug on that possibility. Ugh, how annoying. Not everyone has the patience to figure all this crap out.

Yeah I think the reason behind it is to try to convince people into upgrading Skulltag. It just sucks that I happened to release the demo with an alpha version. If I knew this was coming I would have held back, but nope  :ugeek: At least connecting via IP will still work, and /v/ and friends don't seem to mind that.

Ok, I've got a server up, but I'm not sure if people can connect.

My IP address:  173.25.28.186

I'll try to leave this up as much as possible today, since I might want to play and it appears that none of the other servers have the updated version of Skulltag.

There should be a UK server up pretty soon, permanent too

Alright, I need some help here.

I've managed to finally get a server running(sort of) on my Mac but I'm running into just a few problems.

1. I can't get the game mode to Deathmatch no matter what I do. The game mode IS set to that in Doomseeker, but when I run the server it starts it in Cooperative every time, no matter what. Is there any other way to force it into Deathmatch mode?

2. My server does not have a name even though I gave it one. A helpful person that found his way into my server told me it shows up blank and that's it. It appears the same way for me and my roommate. Any ideas?
EDIT: I've managed to figure out that I can name my server, but it can only be one word or a group of characters as long as they are connected in some way. For example: I used "fuck" and it worked, but "fuck_you" also works as long as I have the underscore in there. If I replace it with a space(simply "fuck you"), it refuses to display it at all.[/list]

The server IS working. I can get into it myself, my roommate can get into it with me, and the person(I didn't catch his name) that managed to stumble into my server could get in and play just fine. It's just that my server has no name can only have a one word name or line of text and is always in Cooperative mode.
This could possibly be a glitch with the Mac port of Skulltag, but I'm going to look for other options here before blaming the problems on that.

In the server window you should be able to change it in the server window using the command "sv_hostname Megaman deathmatch" or whatever. As for game mode, "deathmatch 1" and then "map MM1CUT" to reset the game should do it.

I don't know, I'll have to test it later or something.

I'm having a new problem now where my server will show up on the list sometimes and others it's like it doesn't exist at all. I can't see it then, and neither can my roommate.
The really strange part is that none of my settings have changed between the times it appears and disappears. It's just there sometimes, and others it's not.

From what I understand that may not work that well. Is there a command to have the server browser to only search for servers running the specific wad.

Nope. You'll just have to filter them down in DoomSeeker or whatever to find what you're looking for.

I was afraid of that.

anyways, I started work on a comprensive server guide. I figured include everything from the simple lan server, to setting up multiple servers on a remote box. I would also like some help from the community.

I finally managed to get everything going after finding a list of server commands and stuff and having to put everything in manually. At one point, the weapons and items wouldn't respawn and I had to track down the commands to fix that.
I'm testing various configurations now before I throw the info in my guide.

I think a big part my problems from before are Doomseeker's fault, to be honest. I think it's just really buggy sometimes.

Thanks for the help, Mike.

I ended up using IDE to generate the batchfile, cfg file, and this RSP file wich I have no idea what it does. Then I went hunting down the commands to do a log file just how I just wanted to figure out how to prep this kind of server for a remote box for my clan.

Mako, I honestly never heard of anyone running any kind of game server, or any server on a mac before. I am curious if you are much you know of linux.

Next to nothing.
The extent of my Linux knowledge involves the few times I've installed Ubuntu on a computer, and I only messed around with it for a while before I replaced it with Windows again because I didn't know how to do anything.

You need to go to skulltag.com but it seems to be dead at the minute. Try again in a few minutes or so, I reported the problem.

Just follow this guide. It's rather self explanatory.

A quick question, I managed to get a server working, but for some reason it shows up in Doomseeker, but not the Skulltag server browser.

Just wondering why this is.

The skulltag server browser only shows servers that are the same version of the skulltag that you're currently using.

So wait, my server is on a different version than me?  I must be getting things confused.

Oh well, I ran a test and everyone who joined had about 900 ping haha.
I'll just spare everyone the suffering and refrain from making any more.

Hmm, it should come up then. Not sure what else the internal browser doesn't pick up, but don't worry. Soon I foresee people ditching that for Doomseeker anyway  ;)

Quick question: I've started my own server and my friends can join, yay! However, I want to be able to add bots when I'm in game on my own server. When I bring up the console and type >addbot it replies with 'only the host can add bots'. How do I become host on my own server?

By the way, this game is AMAZING. Mad props to the creators!

Thanks

You can addbots either via the server window OR by giving yourself rcon access. To give yourself rcon access you have to set a password via the server window. Once that's set up, go to the console and type "send_password xxxx" (xxxx being the password you just set) and you should get an access granted access. THEN try adding the bot ;)

Sweet, that almost worked! I go into Configure Server->Administration->Server Control. Then I'll join the game and type 'send_password <password>' and it will give me the access granted message, yay! But I still get the 'only the host can add bots' message when I try to add bots! If there's an easy fix let me know, otherwise I'll stick to adding bots from the server window. :) It'd be nice to control it on the fly though because of the different level sizes.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

type rcon then stuff. For example:
Code: [Select]
rcon nextmap
rcon addbot

I usually just host a server for my friends and would like said server to be private, but other players keep getting in even though I keep the box for showing servers on the list unchecked. Why is this happening? My only real alternate option has been to kick anyone who joins, but I dislike doing this as it probably causes confusion for the person I kick.

Apologies if this has already been asked, I'm a bit busy at the time of posting this and haven't had the opportunity to look through this thread.

try setting up a password, so only you and your friend can get in because you and your friend are the only ones with the password.
