Title: Did you know??? MM8BDM
Post by: cybersavior on May 28, 2016, 09:34:18 PM
Just a little snippet of useless information

Anyone besides me ever realize that the sprite scale in the mod is not actually to scale for the environments, when dircetly compared to Megaman's nes sprite in the games.

The players sprites especially, they are set to a scale of 2.5, when they should be 2.0 to match the scale of the textures from the nes games, which have been doubled for MM8BDM.

Try a simple examination of the textures especially putting Megaman against a small textured block of 32 map height in game. In MM8BDM his entire face and a small bit of his shoulders sticks above these smaller blocks.

In the NES games, the top black part of Megaman's eyes are obscured by the block, and only one row of skin above each eye is visible.

In MM8BDM, Megaman appears 60 pixels in height due to a scaling of (2.5x24) instead of 48 pixels which is (2x24).

Whereas the textures in MM8BDM are 2 times their normal size, not 2.5, because it makes more sense as the mapping is multiples of 16 and would not line up otherwise.

I wonder if there ever been any consideration towards changing the player sprites and weapon graphics to a scale of 2 (some of the weapon graphics are a  scale of 2 btw, but most are not)

Did you know there are three identical whites on the MM8BDM palette?

Fun fact, the palette consists of three palettes used for different resources from which MM8BDM had collected its assets from: The NTSC palette from NES, the Rockman 7 FC palette, and the Megaman 10 palette.
This set of colors only supplements 192 of the 256 colors, the rest are remnants of the modified Doom Palette 8BDM made use of prior to version 3.

Did you know that you are capable of jumping 90 pixels high when most maps assume you can only jump 64?
Did you know that "Aeration Sun" is actually an anogram for SoniaNature?
Did you know that Ring Boomerang is by far the most common weapon in CTF maps?

Did you know the Rain Flush sound effect used in the game is actually different from the original MM4 sound effect? In MM4, Rain Flush only plays once, while in MM4, the sound effect loops 3 times to make up for the duration of the attack itself.

Did you know the pain sound effect used for MM3 skins is virtually the same as the pain sound effect used for MM4 and onward skins? The MM4 one has extra notes on the triangle channel, while the MM3 one doesn't.

Did you know the Metal Blade sound effect used in the game is very slightly different from the original MM2 sound effect? The noise channel part of it is slightly less loud so its not jarring on the ears when people spam the weapon over and over.

Did you know the sound effect used in-game for health and ammo restoration is custom-made? Since this game uses an instant refill instead of the slow refill seen in the original games, a short loop of the sound effect is used instead. Before its update, it used to mimic the MM3-MM4-MM5-MM6 variation with its "flatline-ness", while the current one was modified to be more like its MM2-MM9-MM10 counterpart, where each time the SFX is played for each "peg of health", it cuts the previously played one.

Did you know that the three sound effects used in-game for Atomic Fire's charging are purposefully exactly the same number of PCM samples (and file size) to allow a smooth playback offline? This of course isn't usually possible online at higher ping counts...

This is actually incorrect. The maximum climbing height with the top of a jump is 91 map units.
But this is climbing height, not jump height. This combines how high you jump with how high of a stair you can step up.
The highest stair you can climb by default is 24 map units, meaning the actual max jump height is actually 67 map units.
Any higher than that and players have to climb up to the top of the height, resulting in a less smooth transition.

With that in mind, here's something more useful.
The maximum jump height, without climbing, while underwater is 205 units. Adding in climbing brings that up to 229 units.

Note that these are just reference values and that I do not encourage mapping using these numbers as it could look pretty bad given the nature of the textures in this game.

Uhhh... thanks for reading and tune in next time for more Did You Know MM8BDM.

You can actually make it up a 96 unit difference, Abandoned Wily Fortress actually has a spot with one and the transition only feels slightly weird, like you are just barely making the jump.
It should be the only point I've done and it was simply to fit a texture to the wall there anyway, but it works and isn't hard to pull off.

It is doable, but I don't recommend it often, so, the more you know?

Did you know that the current sound effect for Leaf Shield is a version of the sound that is looped once? In Megaman 2, Lead Shield would repeatedly play a short sound, but in MM8BDM this sound plays twice each time it is used. Presumably done to provide better playback during gameplay, especially online.

Did you know that certain Doom creatures can be summoned while having their appearances be that of a Robot Master? For example, typing "Summon centaur" in the console, will summon a Centaur from Doom, but with the appearance of Centaurman from MM6.

Did you know that the Instagib Metal Blade uses sound differently to most other weapons? Rather than having the player make the firing sound, the Instagib Metal Blade has the high speed projectile play the sound, to create a more intense effect for when a player almost gets hit by one.

Did you know that you shouldn't type "Summon ammo" into the console?

The centaur is from HeXen, which Zandronum also supports.

Roboenza is based off the "zombie" mode from other games, Halo had it yes but I don't think it was the first game to do so.
Saxton Hale is based off the mode of the same name from Team Fortress 2 as well.

Yes, but Cutman's head only appeared in certain maps. Usually ones that were edited/converted or created by me.

Did you know it took two people to create Gamma's sprite? Fupoo and myself took turns in completing parts and sticking him together like a giant 8-bit frankenstein monster. His nintendo power poster art was used as a reference since there was barely any Gamma art to work with at the time.

Did you know the Genesis had a different attack from B? It involved Hyper Storm H picking up Buster Rod G holding his staff up while Mega Water S balanced on top of it. Hyper Storm would crash the staff down causing a giant water splash that you would have to jump over. It was scrapped because rendering Buster Rod's Rod was a pain in the neck.

Did you know there is a tiny reference to Resident Evil in MM8BDM since v1? It is only in one of the TEXTURES files as a comment though. Good luck finding it  :p

I still think item-2 is kinda bad and should have been left out, but here we are.

Also did you know, Proto Shield was going to be it's own item instead of slapped onto Proto Man's weapon? The powerup icon is still in the core game (I think).

MM2DW3 and MMBDW1 actually have campaign info programmed for it, despite both of them not making it to the campaign. MM2DW3 is a Deathmatch between you and the Alien with a frag limit of 10, while MMBDW1 is a Team Deathmatch with you, Mega Man, and Bass on Team Dr. Light, and Tengu Man, Dynamo Man, Burner Man, Magic Man, and Cold Man on Team Dr. Wily, with a frag limit of 20.

Did you know that the only reason Light Labs was overhauled into its current state was because I just finished my semester in college, had a week until I moved back home and nothing better to do with v3 other than nitpicking stuff?

In other words, it happened because I got bored and had way too much time on my hands.

Drain runes steal some health from enemies when you shoot them.

There are ten of these runes in total I believe, the 4 others you missed are I believe: Resistance (That reduces the damage you take), Reflection (directly sends part of the damage you took back to whoever hurt you) Prosperity (Let's you pick up health above the max 100 limit, up to 250 I think) and Regeneration ( It slowly regenerates your hp, 10% of your maximum health per second).

I could be wrong in some of them and for that reason I'd direct you to the Zandronum/Skulltag page on Runes but that's a problem for me at the moment.

In the code of MM8BDM, there are actually full alternate palettes for the Mega Man & Bass weapons, most likely intended for Bass according to the game's WEPACS.acs file:

To see these colors in the game, type the following into the console:

Puke 998 179 (for Tengu Blade)
Puke 998 180 (for Wave Burner)
Puke 998 181 (for Spread Drill)
Puke 998 182 (for Magic Card)
Puke 998 183 (for Remote Mine)
Puke 998 184 (for Copy Vision)
Puke 998 185 (for Ice Wall)
Puke 998 186 (for Lightning Bolt)

3:They both apppear in 8 bit games.

If I recall correctly, Mike was looking for a "sad" credits theme, and that was the one I suggested

Did you know that, due to the way the talking NPCs work, standing near them, but at a different height from the NPC actor will cause that NPC to talk constantly without stopping. Some of the weird examples of this include standing on top of that large machine next to Elec Man, and standing on the waterfall behind Splash Woman

Also, did you know that, the hornets shot by Hornet Chaser have a sound effect limit? Only 3 Hornet Chaser sounds can be playing at the same time. This was because having 5 or more hornets in one place could get really loud (especially when i would fill a whole map with bees, hehehe)

The mail box outside Dr. Light's lab actually has two unused actor states in the curretly released version. These states are interally named "Cossack" and "CossackSnowy".

This is one of the three NES palette schemes that was adapted to MM8BDM's palette. Rockman 7 FC uses it as well. (http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-Denei/3370/NesPal.htm)

As of Version 5B, the game recognizes the following actors as Monsters:

(click to show/hide)

The only bosses in the game that are not defined as monsters are Yellow Devil, Met Catcher and Met Daddy, Wily Capsule, Duo, and Evil Robot.

When fighting King, entering "Kill KingBoss" into the console can break the fight. To fix it, the player must enter "Summon KingBoss2", and the battle will continue as normal.

There's a hidden M-Tank behind the wall to the right when you start out before the award ceremony in Gamma's stage.

In honor of MM8BDM Version 6 coming out in two weeks, here's a new piece of trivia:

The image of Terra in the Version 5B title sequence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXKb3CyqGHk) is based on a card from Series 5 of the Japanese Rockman Carddass series. Here is the card it is sourced from:

And here is Molly (https://www.deviantart.com/geno2925)'s pixel art recreation, including Sunstar:

In Nitro Man's Stage, not only can you destroy the cars with Chill Spike, but you can do so with Oil Slider, Ice Wall, and Black Hole.

I know this is an old post, but I only just noticed this one. For those of you who love random game dev trivia, I can actually shed some light on that. The concept of Dr. Cossack and CO being campaign buddies was in the works as early as v4. Originally if you walked to the road, right before you hit the invisible wall (between the fences at Dr. Light's lab) Auto would show up to give you a lift. You then would go to Cossack's Citadel where... yeah, that's kind of why it never panned out. There wasn't a practical purpose for Cossack's Citadel so it never materialized.

Anyways, that mailbox was meant for Dr. Cossack's Citadel and it's the only evidence of that whole idea still existing in the core today. Although I might still have the map prototype floating around somewhere, and maybe even the version of Dr. Light's labs that has the transition.

Since the old link is dead, here (http://hlc6502.web.fc2.com/NesPal.htm) is a new one. As a bonus, here (http://hlc6502.web.fc2.com/NesPal2.htm) is a follow up in which Kasion (the creator of the palette) provides a new alternate palette (with an alternate version).
