MM8BDM Discussion / "Playing to win" in 8BDM
« on: April 13, 2013, 08:04:15 AM »
This is an article written quite some time ago titled "playing to win". I've known about this article for a long time but forgotten the exact source, until someone reminded me today. I think it helps tremendously in understanding gaming in general, and what it means to win. A shorter version of this article as an excerpt can be found here.

This issue has been some what of a contention among older players of the game. Various people have, in this game, declared certain things to be "cheap" or unfair - which, as the article would say, is the hallmark of being a scrub. So that's why I'm curious to ask you: Do you think certain things in this game are "cheap"? Is anything cheap? Why do you think so? (and if you read the article, would you change your mind about it?)

The WWW board / Chiptune / 8-bit music!
« on: December 13, 2012, 05:05:30 AM »
So you like chiptune, eh? Post any chiptune/8-bit artists you like here. I'll start with some of mine.

umio: Prolific breakcore/drill'n'bass producer. Lots of free downloads, creative stuff across the board.
Sample

Blasterhead: Chiptune composer featured in various soundtracks and on other trance labels, he has some chiptune classics. What's noteworthy is some of his later tracks, like the one here, have a unique introspective feel to them.
Sample:

Bizen: On his own he does 8-bit arranges of various games, such as Ocarina of Time, which I like for having a rather 'authentic' feel to them. In his circle he releases lounge / chillout music which is also worth checking out.

YZYX: Some Chilean guy.

No, really. <_<

Well, that's a good place to start. You don't have to post all that information; just post songs if you like.

...From the main page, at the least.

I would actually prefer the forum being deleted entirely, but moving it to be a subforum (such as under "General Gaming Discussion") or as a single thread would also be acceptable. Given that most threads in the forum consist of one post, it would make more sense to leave it as a single thread which mugenmidget updates to announce his streams.

Alternatively, he can just let people who are interested check his website. I would imagine that the majority of people who are interested in his streams already check his website. (And that they're in the minority on this website, but that's purely speculation. Let them come forth in defense if they wish. In all fairness, the forum is at best nothing more than an announcement thread for a single user who I see as having no connection to CutStuff, which is why it should go away from the main page.)

Mega Man Discussion / Which robot master would you want to see as a Navi?
« on: December 12, 2012, 08:14:07 AM »
There are actually quite a few RMs that were never converted into navis for the MMBN series. Which of these would you like to see with EXE redesigns?

Personally I was most looking forward to Gemini and Crash Man. I thought EXE5's battle system with enemies on two sides would've been a great fit for him. (Instead, EXE5 brought us masterpieces like... Lark Man. Ugh.) Capcom did seem to throw us a bone in Star Force, though.

A couple of these have fan-designs courtesy of Higure-san. You can check out his gallery here.

(I've only included RMs from the main games in the poll. You can see the full list here.)

Tutorial Collection / [TUTORIAL] Joining Zandronum servers
« on: August 21, 2012, 03:53:06 AM »
If you look on DoomSeeker, (grab it here) you'll see there's two servers running on Zandronum. (The rest are still on skulltag 98e). These servers are using Zandronum 1755, which you can download here (click on the links for either Windows, OSX, or Linux.) Saving the file to your "engines" folder will allow you to find it easily later.

In DoomSeeker, select "Configure" to bring up a screen like this:

Select the icon marked in red and set it to the zandronum.exe file. Then hit "apply" and you're ready to go!

Zandronum plays the same as skulltag does, however, your controls/binds won't be carried over from skulltag. When you launch Zandronum the first a time a new file will be generated; you can open this file and paste your old Skulltag controls into it under the [Doom.Bindings] area.

Filepaths will not need to be reconfigured if already set up. If not, check the DoomSeeker tutorial above. To play on the q-box server, you'll need the wad found here. To play on the duel server, download the HUB wad here

Change the path to executable back to skulltag to switch back to 98e/old servers!

In the MM8BDM Discussion forum, there's currently eight stickies, most of them are very, very old news. The screenshots and wiki thread aren't updated by Mike any more, the CTF contest is over. Keep the MM8 expansion around as it's the only one still going on. V2C was released over a year ago by now; everyone seems to have it at this point. If you want to keep them you can have them linger around in the help forum, which doesn't have much traffic (ergo stickies wouldn't slow it down), along with the masterserver changes (again, also relatively dated).

I could report all of those threads individually but I bring it here because I think a policy change would be effective overall. A large amount of stickies are ugly and nothing more than clutter after the activity tails off, so keeping the amount of them low (<4) would look more organized.

FORUM rules: They're nice but I think these might not be suited to host a larger community. In the past I've noticed a lot of the moderations / warnings given on this forum come down to "discretion", and that leaves more room for moderated users to argue (which is unnecessary and generally a waste of space). I actually am suggesting this for the moderators' benefit as well; if they have certain things to look for they can act on, their jobs will become smoother and more automated, less discrepancy will occur, and the whole board will be clear on the game. Additionally, laying out guidelines for the moderators will work as well - there have been instances in the past when one moderator acted out of line; but I have never seen anything that explicitly told him not to behave that way; it was only "expected" of him to act better. Rather than leave things up to your (or his) expectations, establishing a firm guideline for his behavior would most likely curb infantile behavior. (Or at least, allow users to report it accurately.)

As for any new forum rules, I think a general policy concerning new members would be nice. My impression thus far of this forum is most of them are introverts who might behave in ways contrary to hospitality; any policy that would encourage old members to be cooperative (or at least, non-hostile) toward new members would be fantastic. Definitely something to consider. Both these issues I bring together because they deal with old, dated topics that need to be purged. The rules have been neglected for an extended period now and I think it'd be nice to remind both new and old users they're still around.

Bracket for Round Two:

(Thanks to Shade Guy for the image.)

Consolation for Round 1 will be a Q-Box LMS match between eliminated players. When agreed upon, the date will be posted here.

Here's the current tournament bracket.

I won't be updating this graphic, so if anyone wants to draw / fill in later stages go for it.)

(Signups are closed.)

UPDATE: As of now, both Super Adaptor and Exit Unit will be permitted. In the current version (K) Super Adaptor only appears in spawns where it would normally (but not guaranteed). This means it can only appear on a map if it was there originally. Proto Buster and E-tank do not appear in any location in q-box.

Both players are allowed one map reshuffle per opponent. If both players have scored less than half the frags (under 5 frags in default; round up for odd numbered fraglimits) they can ask for a reshuffle so that the boxes may contain different items. The map chosen does NOT change, only the contents of the boxes! Do this if you think a map's weapon layout is particularly sour. (It's like reshuffling a deck, hence the name.) You can only do this ONCE per opponent. (Both opponents can do it on the same map, however.) When the map is reset, frags are carried over. Example:

Roc vs. Shade Guy
1) Roc picks Wind Man.
2) Roc scores three frags. Both players have less than 5 frags.
3) Shade Guy asks for a reshuffle.
4) RCON MAP MM1CUT;RCON CHANGEMAP MM6WIN
(There must be a map change, followed by an intermission back to the chosen map to reset the RNG.)
5) Roc recovers the 3 frags already scored. The round continues.
6) As long as both players have <5 frags, Roc can ask for a reshuffle. Shade will not be able to ask for a reshuffle until he fights his next opponent.

The goal of this option is to try and correct a potentially lousy weapon or item placement set. Note that some boxes CAN be reshuffled into the same item, but it'll be random. (Similar to how you can draw the same card again after shuffling a deck.) Again, reshuffling only changes the boxes - the map chosen remains the same. Let me know if you have any questions/suggestions about this system.

First, download the Q-Box game mode here!

Next, signup! Fill out the following sheet:

Name In-game:
Skype name:
Preferred Matchtime (if applicable):

Now you're set! I'll set the bracket once I get a nice even number (e.g. 8 or 16) and then let you guys cut loose. Also post if you can host a server or not for matches; it'll help. If you do, make sure the following flags are set:

-Chasecam OFF
-Autoaim OFF
-Crouch OFF
-Drop Weapons OFF
-Force Respawn ON

Banned Maps: (Must be excluded from rotation)
MM7CLO
MM7SPR
MM5WAV
MM5CRY
MM7DW4

Custom Maps: Custom maps may be used if both players agree to the map, and the map pack has no custom weapons. (The server also has to host it.) Skulltag maps cannot be used.

Game Format: Games are played in Deathmatch with a playerlimit of 2. Best of 3 duels. Each player picks one map; the third duel will be played on  a map agreed by both players. (If they can't agree, they will agree to "random" and RCON NEXTMAP will be used to decide the final map. Players can also agree to that method if they wish.)

Default Fraglimit is 10. For each round, players can change the fraglimit to any thing from 5 to 15 frags AFTER the map is chosen.

Players cannot play on a server they are hosting UNLESS his opponent agrees.

Timeout: Yell "TIME" during a match to halt gameplay. Both players should stop moving and shooting until the other person repeats "TIME" or "TIME IN" etc. to resume the game. Players get two time outs. Frags scored on players who have "Connection Interrupted" will generally not count. If you see someone lagging out, don't attack them if you weren't doing so already.

Current version of qbox is k. All matches will be played on the current version of qbox.

Let me know if you foresee any other conflicts. With that, let the games begin.

Tutorial Collection / [TUTORIAL] Binding (SR50)
« on: December 05, 2011, 05:34:18 AM »
Binding: This is when you assign a command to a key. Normally all of your controls are binds. If your Q key is set as "Use Item", the bind for that key is:

Code: [Select]
BIND Q "INVUSE"
You can bind any key this way by using Bind Key "command". Note that you can also set binds to change your name, skin, or class. Let's use function keys for example.
Code: [Select]
BIND F1 "SKIN HORNETMAN"
BIND F2 "PLAYERCLASS HORNETMAN"
BIND F3 "CHANGEMUS HORMUS"
This way, pressing F1 changes your skin to Hornet Man. F2 changes your class to Hornet Man, and F3 changes the music to Hornet Man's theme. (You'll need the skin/class/music loaded in order for it to work. Hornet Man's skin should be on the wiki, although I haven't checked it lately.)
To Doublebind, just type type "Doublebind" instead of "Bind". When you doublebind a key, you have to press it twice in order for it to activate. E.g.
Doublebind F3 "Skin Hornetman" = Pressing F3 twice activates the command (change your skin to Hornet Man). Other useful commands:
Code: [Select]
TURN180 // Allows you to turn around 180 degrees
CENTERVIEW // Puts your aim directly parallel to the ground
"USE GRAVITYHOLDWEP" // Replace "GravityHold" with any weapon in order to instantly switch to that weapon. Handy for charge kick, magnets, and top spin.
+USE // opens doors in Doom and Invasion maps
KILL // use this to instantly kill yourself. Great for One-Flag CTF!
==
SR50

What is SR50? It's a command you activate by creating aliases. When you hold down the +SR key, you run faster but you can't mouselook left or right. It's critical in making slightly longer jumps (such as up stairs in certain maps) or over slightly longer pits. You can also evade much quicker in CTF by using it to escape.

How do you set it up? Type these commands into the console:
Code: [Select]
Alias +left2 "+left; +moveleft"
Alias -sr "turnspeeds 0; -strafe"
Alias +sr "turnspeeds 65536; +strafe"
Alias +right2 "+right; +moveright"
Alias -right2 "-right; -moveright"
Alias -left2 "-left; -moveleft"
Great! Now you've made all of your aliases, and you're half way done. Next you need to assign these to keys. Bind +left2 and +right2 to the keys you use to sidestep - A and D if you're right handed, or LEFTARROW and RIGHTARROW if you're left handed (like me!).
Code: [Select]
bind A +left2
bind D +right2
bind SPACE +sr
You can change SPACE to any key you want; whenever you're running either left or right and you hold down that key, you'll run faster. (Same with using LEFTARROW and RIGHTARROW for A and D.)

Anything Goes / (Updated) What's your personality type? (Meyers-Briggs)
« on: October 10, 2011, 06:45:31 AM »
Take the revised test here

Read about what it means here

Have you ever wondered "how do I describe my personality"? Or attempted to and came up with a simple answer like "Smart, nice, and kind"? This might give you a better insight into how you act and a largely general description of you (obviously they won't be spot-on). Each type is broken down into four pairs of traits that oppose each other, with the letter being the more dominantly expressed or "preferred" of the two - most people carry shades of both of each.

Extraversion (E) - (I) Introversion
Sensing (S) - (N) Intuition
Thinking (T) - (F) Feeling
Judgment (J) - (P) Perception

A sample description on E vs. I, for example:
Extraverts are action oriented, while introverts are thought oriented.
Extraverts seek breadth of knowledge and influence, while introverts seek depth of knowledge and influence.
Extraverts often prefer more frequent interaction, while introverts prefer more substantial interaction.
Extraverts recharge and get their energy from spending time with people, while introverts recharge and get their energy from spending time alone.

And so on, with similar differences for the other types (there's a lot to know!).I'm personally an ENTJ.

Taking it again, I'm an ISTJ.

MM8BDM Discussion / Weapon Tiers Redux - Six Tier Distribution - Ver III
« on: August 11, 2011, 08:49:54 AM »
Updated for v2c.

This is an attempt to organize weapons based on similar usefulness at fragging an opponent in Duel / LMS. Think of the weapons used most often or "go-to" weapons being higher up, and more situational / drawback weapons being lower. First tier being the most effective at fragging / lethal, although it is not strictly a "power tier". Consider each weapons in a tier to be around the same use. This may help mappers with "weapon placement" to some degree; shield / AOE weapons will obviously have more use. This tier list is more of a "best all-around / most reliable at fragging" weapons at the top. Of course, I'm interested in any changes you might recommend in the list.

Parenthesis denote weapons that don't normally appear in Duel / LMS, and aren't integrated between the weapons; just as a categorization of the tier (for convenience).
