I completed V and VI. I was well on my way in VII but when I got halfway through (I actually just got Yuffie on the team) a friend saved over my game file.
Sad times were had.
I also agree that I've always had a heck of a time playing through these games, as most of the time when I pick up a turned-based RPG I have a hard time staying interested in it for the whole play-through (and these games are typically really long). Some games are really good at keeping the monotony at bay (like Baten Kaitos with it's quirky card system) but FF (along with a few others) basically defined the genre, so it doesn't really employ any of these tricks until later on the series.
Not sure what I loved about V and VI, though. I think in V it was the job system and in VI it was the story and music, the darker tone. Really great games.
