Title: General Gaming Footage Thread
Post by: Donutyoshi on November 23, 2012, 06:01:16 PM
Post your own non-MM8BDM footage here.

Edit: I thought of making a separate video thread, but I thought it would be better to merge into one thread.

Lies and slander, Mupen64 emulates better. ESPECIALLY if you're into "not named Mario Party 3" netplay. I'm not sure if it's still there, but on the Project 64 site they actually had a link that redirected to Mupen64.

People just know Project 64 more because of its immense popularity.

It's not really the fault of it's emulation.

Wait, there's a netplay emulator that doesn't cause desync when you're tying to play Mario Party and I end up playing Bumper Balls and Smash is playing a different mini game?

Actually, a while back I discovered this thing for PJ64 called the "AQZ Netplay Plugin"

It requires hosting at port forwarding (It's NOT Kaillera), and I've had no desynch problems. I've played full games of Mario Party with it.

Oh God, isn't that the one that has Zero's theme playing in every single level?

In other news, I've been replaying DKC3 this weekend and as is customary with every single game I go back and replay, whether it be on an emulator or in real life, I ran into a weird glitch.  In the not-so-final fight against K Roolenstein, after the cutscene between KAOS and K. Rool, the background and environment sprites glitched and failed to move while some background details, the characters, and the other objects did.  I ended up dying since it was too hard to tell exactly where I was in the arena, but in this picture, I'm actually all of the way to the right and bumping against the collision box for the electricity generator.  Those look like debug-coordinates at the bottom in black, but I don't know.  I died and reentered and it was fine again.  I think it was because I hit right at the exact moment the cutscene would have ended and it freaked out or something.

That's because Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine IS Puyo Puyo.
It's the same deal with Kirby's Avalanche (or Kirby's Ghost Trap for you Europeans).
They're both just Puyo Puyo, but with different characters because they thought Kirby and Robotnik would make the game sell better.

Even the enemies behave the same between versions. Paint Roller in Avalanche, Grounder in Mean Bean Machine and Witch in Puyo Puyo 1 all use the same strategy. So do Satan(PP), DeDeDe(KA) and Robotnik(MBM). Same with other characters.
The music in Mean Bean Machine is pretty awful in my opinion. It definitely sounds best in the Genesis version of Puyo Puyo (but it lacks so many voice clips). Voice acting is definitely best in Puyo Puyo CD (Unique voice clips for every character!!!), and the best graphics are in Super Puyo Puyo and Avalanche. Too bad that Puyo Puyo CD uses PSG+FM for the music and not Redbook or PCM ...
PPCD still remains my version of choice. For Puyo Puyo 2 on the other hand ... SNES version. All the way. Or the Arcade version in MAME.
Title: Re: General Gaming Screenshots Thread
Post by: Geno on March 16, 2013, 02:29:53 PM
I think one time on Kirby's Avalanche, I got a 10-chain, but that was on my REAL SNES so no screenshots.
I did that by pulling a Broom Hatter and stacking the blobs/ghosts/beans/puyos randomly.

Did anyone run into this strange glitch in Mega Man X2? I ran into it last night when I fought Overdrive Ostrich, although it didn't happen again in the refight in the X-Hunter base:

Well, if I could post up a letsplay video, I would. But I can't since I don't quite have what's needed.

R-Type Leo cat is all my yes.
That boss is so much hate.
The Playstation version (Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius ~ Forever with me) has an amazing hidden version of the Stage 2 theme which is one of my favorite stages in all of Konami's history.

This. The Pause in the video is there because you have to hit a sequence of buttons (L1 L1 R2 R2 R1 L2 R1 L2 left down right) for the hidden version of the music.
I heard you can unlock Dracula as a playable character, but I don't know in which versions.

So I played that game again.
The Ganbare Goemon / Legend of the mystical Ninja stage is so very fun to play. And it has ninja penguins. And chibi ninja Big Core mk I and Tetrans.
Unfortunately I did not reach the Puyo Puyo boss because the the 3-D Xexex parody stage (one of the best looking stages ever in a shooter) is just evil and I have not memorized a strategy for the speed stage yet.

Will we do Sexy Parodius next, Beed28? It is on PSX and Saturn and some Arcade board, I think. No SNES version, unfortunately ... But it has a pretty neat Castlevania stage.
Also, Hikaru and Akane are the best Characters in Parodius imo.

I probably won't. I'm too lazy to find a ISO image anywhere and the only games I played on ePSXe I actually had bought legitly and ripped the ISO images off of the discs themselves.

Also, Dracula isn't in the SNES version of Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius.

Time for more DKC2 weirdness.

I used codes for being any animal buddy (but then switching back so I got a Kong with the animal buddy's palette), a glitchy moonjump (used only in that roller coaster image), some sort of weird code that messed up the map screen sprite, a code that makes the Kongs red (like the red gas in the first K.Rool battle), and a code that makes Diddy Kong not fall down when cartwheeling in the air.

If anyone wants, I could put my amazing .cht file for the game up (but it's big and has LOTS of palette and music modifier codes.(and I might not be allowed to do it!))

Okay here we go.

Secret of Evermore takes that to the extreme. You get a hidden message about an hour or so after the ending. After getting other hidden messages before that (I think one after 5 minutes and one after 15 or so).

Similarly, waiting for 64 loops of the Results music in MK64 causes a secret section of the theme to play.

Although when listening to Mario Kart 64 Race Tracks (the official OST), I believe you only need to wait for 2 loops for the hidden music.

Also, pretty much EVERY instance of Totaka's song.

You can bind the option to disable smoke effects (and the rain in the Castlevania map) to a key. Have you tried that?

EDIT: Also, certain maps can be very laggy, especially the large open area ones (the island city map especially) and ones with excessive detail (the bizzare dark gothic map).

German is a nice language in some ways. But many translations (especially SNES/PS1-era) just make my brain hurt. Especially the ones of Final Fantasy VII, Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore (apparently Lufia II, Terranigma and the SNES version of Link to the Past suffered a similar fate). Seriously, never play those games in German, no matter what.
For example:
FFVII:  Yuffie:"It's all in there, read it sorgfältig durch und unterschreibe es dann"
Mid-sentence language switching for the win.

Other things that made me rage in german translations I played (but never finished):
- Inserting the musician "Heino" and a reference to a bad german TV show into Secret of Mana for no reason.
- Obsessive usage of the incredibly stupid word "Holerö" in so many SNES games
- Changing the gender of the sprite character in Secret of Mana
- Adding inappropiate jokes to Secret of Evermore
- Mistranslating the names of many locations in many games (iirc also in DKC2)

Good thing Chrono Trigger never got tainted like that.

I managed to make KEGA play some strange creepy music by loading a save state from the final stage of Musha Aleste in Dangerous Seed. Loading it in Wily Wars actually gave me entirely different creepy music. And even more different when using Castlevania Bloodlines.
Loading MMWW states always gave me a frozen screen with the correct MMWW music.
That is an awesome discovery, geno.
Most other games' savestates are rather boring, though.

Graphics range from frozen screens of the game where the state is from over  corrupted screens of that to just black screens or screens filled in a different color.

And with ZSNES savestates, loading them in the wrong game plays the proper music.

Also, usually a blank screen.

I loaded a DKC savestate with DKC3, and it was a black screen playing the DKC1 jungle theme, but then this appeared.
wow that was where I savestated in the original DKC.
And loading a Super Bomberman savestate with DKC3 gave me proper music (slowed down a bit), ONE PROPER SOUND EFFECT, and this flickery thing.
Then that disappeared, and then this thing came up really quickly.
(am not ashamed to say that it startled me a bit)
Then it disappeared too and the game crashed (no music too  :( :( :( )

I also once loaded a Super Bomberman 2 savestate with DKC3. It played the proper music, BUT IT WAS SLOWED DOWN A BIT!

EDIT:I was able to go slow and catch more flickery Super Bomberman savestate in DKC3 stuff and guess what?
Hello!

It's strange how none of this is triggering the DKC3 Error screen...

And for people wondering what it sounded like, here's a recording of the audio coming from the emulator. (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/superbombermanindkc31.wav) Interestingly, it appears that THE EMULATOR IS STILL TRYING TO PLAY SUPER BOMBERMAN, mainly because you can hear a few SFX from SBomberman, like the sound of the Final Boss tossing out a Skull Power Up, and a few footsteps.
It also randomly crashes. Once I was able to hear the full theme while slowed down like this.

If you value your eyes, do not confuse Spriggan Powered with Phalanx (both rather bad-to-mediocre SNES games) when savestating (I used mednafen 0.9.29). And the screen is actually flashing with nothing else happening, but at least the music from SP plays:
(click to show/hide)
Some fun with NES Konami games on mednafen (the music seems to always break):

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE:
Some music:
WARNING: Sometimes there are randomly appearing very high-pitched noises (especially the loud one at the beginning of the Castlevania thing). Try not to listen at a too high volume and don't blame me if it makes your ears hurt.
Dangerous Seed x Musha Aleste (http://www.mediafire.com/?f338s7ct3w6cdsp) (the part where I cut off repeats endlessly)
Castlevania Bloodlines x Musha Aleste (http://www.mediafire.com/?rmbohshday3dzao)

Hey, guess what?
If you load a savestate on Nestopia, with a different game, like a Mario 2 savestate with Mega Man 4, and then do a SOFT RESET, fun stuff can happen.
although I can only get it to work with MM4....

And loading a savestate of a game while playing a hacked version of it can lead to funniness.
Like I loaded a Mega Man 2 savestate while playing Cutman's Bad Scizzors day:

I remember loading a Cossack Stage 4 (US original MM4) savestate while playing Megaman Forever in hopes that I would be taken to the start of Offshore Fortress Stage 2 and would be able to play it normally.

Didn't work. Game just got completely fucked up and I couldn't get past the first screen. It think it also looked a lot like Cossack 4 and NOT Offshore Fortress 2, so I did fail quite badly there.

The thing about savestates is that they store everything that's in memory (including RAM, VRAM, cache, and the registers of any relevant processors) when the save was made. If the state and its environment (stuff like ROM) don't line up, the program tries to carry on as if nothing happens and fails miserably. This is why you see data from the state's game showing up on the machine's one-way bus ride to Crashville.

In Fire Emblem 7, I hesitate between give the Afa's drop to Rebecca (lv 16, still unpromoted) and Priscilla (lv 9, unpromoted too).
These are two characters that have not yet a high level, but that I will train soon, so the growth rate bonus will be good for them.
EDIT: Anyone have an advice ?

Yes, that is a BFG-derivative on the left and an automatic shotgun that uses explosive ammo on the right.
And yes, you can use both at the same time.
It is not quite Brütal Doom, but over-the-top fun nonetheless.
The dual-wielding powerup is kind of unintuitive though.

I recently played this SMB3 Hack "Mario Adventure"

I think it is the "#1 best NES hack ever".

World 7, in it, is also neat.

Instead of full levels, you're given tons of mini levels with challenges in them.

But one of the levels, is my most favourite...
HELL YEAH, 4 BOOM BOOMS!
NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL A CHALLENGE!

Sadly, after pressing the "File" tab on Nestopia, the emulator glitched and asked me if I wanted to update the SRAM. I said no, so Nestopia corrupted it.

I used a plethora of Gameshark codes to make Mario Kart 64 impossibly hard, and the result is a scenario you CANNOT get in MK64 WITHOUT Gameshark.
By the way, the codes were ones to give CPUs a HUGE advantage, one that makes the game "300cc mode", which means going real fast, and a code to advance to the next course even if you get in 5th or below, which is what this screenshot displays.
So in other words, you'll only win if you get loads of Mushrooms and do not mess up EVER.
In fact, that last code works so flawlessly that I would not be surprised if it was intended all along to do that.

Also, more MK64 fun.

The Track scaling code is

810DC608 ????

And here's some example values for the ?????

(click to show/hide)

There are more values, but you can probably deduce the pattern.

1.0 is the default.

-1 basically inverts all slopes (hill becomes pit, huge drop becomes tall mountain, etc.)

And while values past 6.0 look trippy, they basically break almost EVERY course.

And you should probably use moonjump to explore, especially with values past 2.0.

Moonjump with L
D00F6915 0020
810F69C8 4000

And because I'm feeling extra generous, here's a code to disable the "L button changes music volume" thing.
800DC5A9 0004

Keep in mind that with the track scaling code, if it's scaled past 1.0, these courses will be COMPLETELY unplayable.

While playing a second file of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX yesterday, I was on level 3 (Key Cavern). I get a piece of power at the start, and after a bit, I get hit. It wears off, and as I kill the monster that hit me, another piece of power appears. A little later, the same happens yet again. Then after that third one piece wore off, I walk into the next room and one of the monsters released yet ANOTHER one.

However, I did not get to the boss with the effect. Didn't need it at all, though.

Your SMW hack looks nice, but I recommend you to change its name, there is already A LOT of hacks with this name. A LOT.
Do you know SMWcentral ? There's plenty of tutorial and others ressources, for learn how insert costum graphics, music, sprites...

Uh, yeah, I know, I on't really have a name for it.

Besides, "Typical SMW Hack, But With a Surprising Amount of DKC Themed Levels!" doesn't sound that good.

Also, I'd hate to sound rude, but..
(click to show/hide)
... do these look like 100% vanilla SMW levels to you?

And I already have a ton of music inserted.
I knew how to insert sprites too, but I forgot.

The only thing I DON'T know, is overworld editing...

Yeah, of course it's not vanilla, but I meant that there is on SMWcentral a lot of ressources and tutorial on more complex things.
There also should be something on Overworld editing. The tedious thing with it is mainly the events.

Also just beware, SMW Central are getting quite strict on moderating new hacks. They don't like stuff such as simple edits of original SMW levels, cutoff graphics, floating munchers, or 'Kaizo' type levels. They're also rejecting hacks that don't fully work (especially if crashes are involved) on accurate emulators (such as bsnes) nowadays.

Well, I've inserted my own character into my hack.
The only sprites I haven't made for her are the cape ones

HOWEVER, for people who would not want to play as my character (perfectly understandable), There's also a "LUIGI GAME", where you'd play as Luigi instead (although I'd probably change it into Mario at some point)

I'm thinking of making a "Demo1" version, which has everything I have done so far.
So the levels I've edited currently, are

Looks interesting, Geno. Are those more mockup screenies, or an actual hack? If it's real, I'd love playing it when it's done (or whatever you feel like getting done.)
Title: Re: General Gaming Footage Thread
Post by: Geno on February 25, 2014, 03:37:07 AM
Yep, those are the actual screenshots of it, running in ZSNES (which does not have a funky "filter" of sorts that makes the colours 100% accurate to how they are displayed on a TV screen, (and not to mention the inability to draw the last row of pixels,) but whatever).

(Also, speaking of inaccuracies, the only music tracks that have problems in higan are the versions of DKC's "DK Island Swing" (which has a loud crash sound at the beginning), and DKC3's "Water World" (which outright crashes the sound output, which also consequently crashes the game after another music change) )

In fact, here's some more, showing a new name for "Groovy", as well as the levels "Piranha Plateau", "Giant Jungle", "Forest Maze", and "Skull Raft River".

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

So, I guess once I get around to completing all the half finished levels I got so far, as well as finishing up some sprites (HOORAY FOR INEXPLICABLY TRANSFORMING INTO A MARIO RECOLOUR!!1!111!1!), I'll IPS this sucker up and stick it on here with an .SRM file with all the stages (Except the Switch Palaces and the final level) beaten, for DEMO 1.

Although I don't know where to put it. The only really close to appropriate place that CURRENTLY exists is my art topic, which the only thing from this hack I'd really think of putting on there are all the graphics that I made custom for it.

Of course, I could always give it it's own topic, right here in this subforum, if that's alright.

double post, 'cause nobody cared the first time

For some reason, SMW has some different options in the sprite headers for each level/room, which some of them, for some reason or another, causes the amount of sprite tiles that can be displayed at once to be lower than usual.

They still exist, though.

For example, here, a small part of the Podoboo, as well as a few fireballs on the Firebars are invisible, but still there.

And HERE, and ENTIRE PODOBOO is invisible, all because of that Firebar, and the header setting.

Sometimes these things can have funny results.

A recording of the end of a severely gliched Ice Man stage in MM1 Also some stage select (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/icmn.wav)
Those reversed sounds are basically where I had to reset because the game kept randomly resetting.

IF you don't want to listen to the whole thing, the only point of interest that isn't the beginning starts at the 3:58 mark.
(Yes, it took me almost 4 minutes to beat Ice Man. This was because of random resetting, and the fact that Ice Man became unreachable at times and that nothing did any damage except Rolling Cutter)

Also, here's a pretty cool slowed down MM6 boss theme thanks to IKAAAE (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/six6.wav)

One day, I was thinking of things that I dislike, which lead to thinking of that Rockman 5 pirate that tries to pass itself off as Rockman 6 (similar to a Rockman 6 pirate that tries to pass itself off as Rockman 7)

So I experimented.

Hard Man actually looks kinda cool

Demonic Quick Man

Guts Man looks weird

Remember that SMW hack I was making?

Yeah, it's not dead
Here is PIXEL PATHWAY, GENERIC CREEPYPASTA, STORMY SKIES, and an unnamed ice stage that is like SMB3's World 6-10 on crack.

(http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00112.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00113.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00114.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00115.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00116.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00117.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00120.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00121.png)
Also, if you can see it, that second last screenshot has a SMG/SMG2/SM3DL/SM3DW style clock in it!
Just like SM3DW, there's a blue one that gives you 10 seconds, and a green one that gives you 100 seconds!
I tested them in the Valley Fortress, which I turned into one of those SMG/SMG2/SM3DL/SM3DW "gotta go fast" style levels

Also, something's different about the HUD, but I can't place my finger on it...

Oh yeah, there's also a pipe in Yoshi's House that'll take you to my sprite & block testing stage (also with a shortcut to Bowser's Castle's surprise boss)

Also, note that due to my idiocy, many levels start from the middle when using that SRM file. oops

Any suggestions on how I can improve levels, or heck, even cool level ideas, you can send 'em to me via PM!

Funny story, I actually based those enemies off of the SMW Goombas. I wanted to experiment with game design, and I wondered "What would happen if Spelunky was more of a Mario-based kind of game?", and thus, this game was born. It's just a "run left stomping on things" platformer, but it has rogue-like elements tied into it.

I wouldn't believe you're really expected to understand everything because it's nowhere close to finished.Hence the default MS Paint colored grass and the clunky stage layout
I know it looks really half-baked, but there was about a weeks-worth of time put into this.
(To be specific, I started work in January, but not a lot was done due to laziness/business with other things)

more levels for that hack of mine.

A ghost house, a foresty place, a cave place, and a new level type

(http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00128.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00130.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00131.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00132.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00129.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00136.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00134.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00135.png) (http://cutstuff.net/molly/DBBKUP/screen/SMW_00137.png)

It's funny how so many palettes look cool with the Ghost House tileset, but only one is actually used in vanilla SMW.
Although all the colour schemes seen here (except the blue and orange one) needed a little modification via custom level palettes in order to look as cool as they do here.

Title: Re: General Gaming Footage Thread
Post by: Geno on June 13, 2014, 02:31:32 AM
Well, yeah.

You can't have a SMW hack that ISN'T a ROM hack.

This hack started out as a purely vanilla thing, but I slowly started learning 'bout adding custom palettes, music, graphics, sprites, and patches (in that order too!)

In fact, the presence of some (and a lack of others) would be a dead giveaway on when I made each level (for example, all the stages I made for World 1 were done before I knew much about anything, so they are lacking in custom music, and sprites.)
Of course, with a few exceptions, I did go back and add some stuff that I was intending to add earlier, but couldn't.

Don't forget that I posted a small demo of this a page ago (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=5068&start=260#p291545) . It may not have those levels I just posted screens of, but it's got a ton of other things.

(Heck, direct me to a good screen recording software that works and I could make videos of the levels! Would certainly do something to make my YouTube account have more videos!)

I haven't tried this myself, but they say "DxTory" (http://exkode.com/dxtory-features-en.html) is a nice and free recording thing.

It's limited to recording OpenGL so I don't know if it might work for 'ya Geno.
Title: Re: General Gaming Footage Thread

So I got this image convertor that takes any image and makes it into SNES format.
Also converts into .BIN for easy SMW ExGFX usage

So here's a screenshot of my "test" which will stay in my ROM hack (with it's legs showing)
(click to show/hide)

Oh yeah, I found this sprite tweaker thing, so I additionally made it so that Yoshi does not automatically swallow Goombas, Buzzy Beetles, and Bob-ombs (only those ones as they are the only sprites that would work correctly)
I additionally restored the original Japanese version Dolphin behavior (so you can once again eat them)

Meant to be a sort of "castle courtyard" place area type stage level course.
Also has some neat "vanilla" enemies, like Big Steely and Mechakoopa, who both only appeared in Bowser's Castle of the original game

Hmm, I feel like I'm the only one who ever posts here

Aw well.

More screenshots of that SMW hack.

Well, not really. Yes, they're OF my SMW hack, but because I was only using it for experimenting on this certain thing.

GLITCH YOSHIS!
You all know that glitch in SMW that gives you a grey Yoshi, right?
Well, turns out that there are three other glitch Yoshis, a gold one, and two different ones that change colour depending on what palettes the level they're in currently has.
I found them by fooling around with a dissasembly of the Yoshi Egg object.
It had an additional edit included which was an egg that would not change colour depending on it's location (what the vanilla egg does). There was one value in it that determined what colour Yoshi was in it, and setting it to 00, 02, 0C, or 0E would produce the four Glitch Yoshis! (04, 06, 08, and 0A were default ones, Yellow, Blue, Red, and Green being the order. And all the odd numbered values are duplicates of the ones before them)

The grey one that was already accessible with glitches acts like a Yellow Yoshi (so it stomps on the ground when there's any shell in it's mouth)
(click to show/hide)

The gold one acts like a Blue Yoshi (so it grows wings whenever any shell is in it's mouth) HOWEVER, Gold Yoshi cannot be taken to the map screen, Mario loses it when he exits the level! (Probably because it's Yoshi colour value is 00, which is probably also used when Mario doesn't have a Yoshi on the map. Possibly, making it 01 instead of 00 may stop it's disappearing problems)
(click to show/hide)

The two colour changing ones are odd. They act like a Green Yoshi (so it gets each power from each shell), BUT it ignores the Blue Shell completely (so the Yoshi will NOT sprout wings when a Blue Shell is in it's mouth)

- ARMOR -
Crimson Helmet - Red+Silver Dye
Crimson Scalemail - Red+Silver Dye
Crimson Greaves - Silver Dye, still need red to combine with.
All in cosmetic slot.

- ACCESSORIES -
Leaf Wings, with appearance set to hidden. On the cosmetic slot of Leaf Wings I wear a Crimson Cloak with Red+Silver dye.
Tiger Climbing Gear in a different cosmetic slot.

The sole reason I started using dyes with this set is because of the Crimson Cloak. I wanted to have a cape/cloak that appears to turn into wings, like Meta Knight, without the colors being inconsistent.
Wings will appear when you're in midair even if their visibility is disabled.

So...anyone remember that one project I was working on?

Of course you don't, because I was busy reworking some things.
Mostly the HUD, engine, ugly default color tiles, and resolution.
But mostly the HUD.

I feel like the left side of the HUD is a little empty.

This is pretty much the "hey look at my pixel art while I do little programing" phase.
Definitely the main challenge is getting the random level generator working properly, while making it seem like a somewhat decent hand crafted level at the same time. Even though it might not have as much flare as a typical standard level, I'm anticipating to see what the outcome is.

Whoa there, hold your horses. Remember that there's no shame in asking for help; not everyone can be a Pixel or a Toady. See if you can get a "professional artist" to do some better tiles for you on commission, for instance. (I recommend FuPoo; he could use a break from doing fetish porn for tuna heads on deviantART.)
Title: Re: General Gaming Footage Thread

I know that I'm never going to be the world's greatest pixel artist, but one of my main goals with this project is to see how far I can go without having to team up with anyone (of course, this might be broken by the time that I have to compose music). I have tried making other tiles, but this seemed to be the best for me, at least for now. I am definitely going to say, without bragging at least, my skills have gotten a lot better at doing pixel art things (or digital art as a whole) than when I started.

You should definitely get comments on your work from people who are willing to see you improve.

I know I plug them a lot, but I suggest Spriters Resource for that. I just advise you to not get frustrated with their criticism, as it will likely not end well.

Sonic 2

Yep, just regular ol' Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive for those who aren't in the US or Canada)
(click to show/hide)
Not really

Night in "Green Hill Zone"
I guess Tails painted himself with some orange glow in the dark paint.
Same for seemingly random pieces of the level.
(click to show/hide)

Tails falls forever in Hidden Palace Zone
(click to show/hide)

I actually really like a lot of sprites for Sonic from the prototypes of Sonic 2
Like this one from his waiting animation
(click to show/hide)

Tails falls forever in Death Egg Zone while Sonic stands on some floating monitors to escape the same fate
(click to show/hide)

(click to show/hide)

""Tails""? More like, uhhh, ears?
(click to show/hide)

Sonic tries to do his best impression of Tails from the last screenshot
(click to show/hide)

Oh, did I mention that I really like the sprites from the prototypes?
(Also, all screenshots past this point are from a "hidden" area at the end of Wood Zone Act 1. It's almost as if Sonic Team put in the start and end for an act, then filled in the middle)
(click to show/hide)

Watch out!
You're gonna crash! Ahhh!

Then Sonic just falls down while quickly alternating between these two sprites

Here's a bunch of totally normal Sonic 3 & Knuckles screenshots that are totally not from a ROM hack that improves the game greatly and adds tons of customization features (and even more with additional patches!)
Said hack would probably still be superior to any possible official "improved" iPhone remake like the Sonic 1 2 & CD ones.

All these screens are of a version that has the optional patches for Sonic 2 style versions of Sonic, Tails, the Monitors, and the Shields.
(click to show/hide)

It's called "Sonic 3 Complete", and it's really cool!
It even has those weird music tracks from Sonic & Knuckles Collection as options

EDIT: Random screenshot of the same hack, although none of it's features are actually present in said screenshot

Well, Beed, the "517" prototype of "Sonic 3C" (an unreleased version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles as one cart) has the answer.
(As, unlike the earlier 408 proto as well as all other versions of 3 & Knuckles, it allows any character to go to any stage)

Thats odd considering I remember going to any stage as any character on my Genesis version of the game with debug and what not enabled, you can get a buggy Hyper Tails if you had loaded a save file with all the Super Emerdoods before going into the stage select.  :ugeek:
Title: Re: General Gaming Footage Thread
Post by: Geno on July 27, 2014, 08:08:52 PM
Oh well, maybe I just forgot.

I thought though that it prevented you from, say, taking Knuckles to Sonic's and Tails's Sky Sanctuary, while also blocking Sonic & Tails from entering Knuckles's version of the zone.

(Or maybe I've just been playing too much of that cool hack, which DOES prevent them from going places like that)

(By the way, Hydrocity Zone Act 2 is almost impossible with the Sonic CD style controls. You know, cause you gotta wait a second before Spindashing, and there's that bit with the wall and stuff?)

Me and Roy were playing Kirby Superstar together on The Great Cave Offensive

We ran out into this bridge from inside the castle area and he stoned an enemy

And so he stayed that form, and I began pushing him all the way when the bridge randomly collapsed underneath him and threw him into a pit.

I just sort of felt like doing this. I liked how Doom 1 was separated into three episodes (with a fourth one added in Ultimate Doom), so I did the same to Doom 2. I had a hard time coming up with a name for the first episode, though. I got something that sounds pretty good for the second one, and I knew from the start what I wanted to call the third episode, though I added the "Holy" onto it so that it would start with a different letter than the second one.

wait fourth episode what

I wanted to have the tiny planets and the crystal ground, but there wasn't enough unused tile space in the Gemini Man graphics bank
I had to replace some of the crystals, and that weird grey thing from the doc robot version, to have mini planet

I currently have no idea's but i'm willing to be your personal tester for your hack!

I am also working on a SMW hack. I have to work on the Star World and Special World stages. I have a few videos of me playing my hack on my Youtube page.

EDIT: I love how when I mentioned my Mario World hack, this topic died

Well, this isn't the BEST place to show this off, so I should probably join a Doom forum or something.

I made a minor mod that adds three difficulties. They share a similar theme: Increasing the amount of damage done both to you and your enemies, as well as reducing the amount of ammo you pick up. Each one has enemies with a bit more health and do a bit more damage than the last, with Maximum Carnage having faster enemies and Ultimate Carnage having them respawn.
