New Project Forum Rule
« on: October 23, 2012, 04:18:20 AM »
Hey all you Mega Man fans! Are you ready for a new mandatory 8 bit rule?

All projects must now either have a Doomseeker workable link, or a mirror such as Wadhost.

Why the change? It's to make everyone's lives easier and ensure that getting into a server with wads is a more painless process. The days of having to dig around on the forums, looking for the correct wads is pointless. Doomseeker already allows for automated downloading, so lets go use that, alright?

So what happens if you don't have Doomseeker friendly links? You get demoted to another section until you do. But I'll give everyone a curiosity period of two weeks before doing that.

Oh and for those of you with projects, you are best off to either post in this thread or PM me that you have Doomseeker workable links.

Edit: If you have an your own source of hosting files and make use of the sv_website so Doomseeker would download from that, that is valid too.

Even non-packed maps?

I... Don't think it will end well. Rather than doing this, we must first find a free and easy-to-use permanent wadseeker-friendly host.Wadhost isn't much easy, it is troublesome, because the stuff needs to be approved and are rejected easily just because "you didn't add the TXT" I once thought we should have our own mods host, but who will have a super server to do it?

Mappacks, gamemodes, anything like those need doomseeker friendly links. Skins and music packs are fine. This also only applies to main Project Forum itself, along with being a requirement for WIP's to be promoted.

Wadhost really isn't hard to get on, as long as you follow the rules.

A thought occurred:

Should I bump the/my topic to notify you of the Wadhost change? This is gonna take some getting used to -.-

Or will you just.. check to make sure it's done?

Or bump, or any thing really. Saves everyone time and headaches that way. But if most people were ensuring doomseker can find their wads, then this rule and change isn't even going to bother them.

I think this one might be the easiest to use:
http://doom.dogsoft.net/index.php
What's your opinion?
Also, Work-In-Progress is its own group. Why not rename that group to "Expansions and Packs" and add a "Completed Expansions/Packs" while renaming "WIP Forum" to "WIP Expansions/Packs"? Then add the rule for the Forum "Projects" that the thread will be moved from "Completed" to there once the content is hosted in a wadseeker-friendly site.

As a person with no finished projects, this sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

It would probably also be helpful for new users, too.

Excellent idea!  In a game where additional files are basically a requirement to play, this will definitely help both newcomers who might not know where to go for each file and those of us who'd rather not go searching for 5 different topics just to join one server.

the major problems with searching for the mod in the forum are:
1) The PWAD name doesn't make it obvious enough (something in it doesn't match the name of the thread or something)
2) Sometimes, said PWAD was only leaked to a few for testing purposes but said purpose was not mentioned in, let's say, title.
3) Even with the forum's search engine, there are still stuff that falls into a gap because the filename isn't listed in their own topic.

If the number 3 is done, it would be enough to solve the problem! because someone could just search for the filename in the search engine here and find the file in the first few results.

As for a load of files to download... Well, hosts can do their part too, like Messatsu did with his remote.gouhadou. In fact, he could teach how to create that kind of site if it is free.

Do 4shared pk3s and wads work with Doomseeker?

I mean the files are uploaded at 4shared.

I wouldn't think so. 4shared requires you to sign in and log on to even download from their servers.

Oh, this:

Say I wanted to test something privately online with only a few people and noone else. (Let's say for your understanding, the MM8 expansion). Would I still have to provide the wad on wadhost or could I just distribute it privately?

Why would you even need to ask that?

Unless you want people joining or getting their hands on whatever you're testing, why would you upload something that is meant to be private to wadhost. It's like shooting yourself in the foot.
