Any chance of changing the grace period to a week after MM8BDM v3 is released? Most people will probably have to update their wads anyway so uploading them then having the possibility of uploading a new version a few days after would be a waste.

I approve, as I've got a few minor things I'd like to change as well. Updating it once just for this, then to update it again for MM8, (when it's close to release) would seem like a hassle.

No one plays my game mode (evil influences) so can I wait for the MM8 expansion to update it?

http://doom.dogsoft.net/index.php works well, as posted by Tsuki.
http://remote.gouhadou.com/files/ If someone could tell Mess to have an upload feature for this, that would be grand.
Allow me to correct: If someone could tell Mess to explain if the service is free and where to get it;

That's my computer., the same one I host servers on.  Basically I'll try to keep larger releases in this folder as a repository for anything I host.  It is NOT anything like Wadhost or anything like that.  If someone requests for me to toss a project or something on there I'll consider it, but this is not a free-for-all hosting solution.

This is a great idea, and I support its implementation and enforcement. Instead of punitive enforcement in some cases though, I would recommend a civil discussion or reminder to the author to point out there are broken links.

Also, while I fully support and have a couple projects documented on Wadhost I also acknowledge it is not for everyone since the bar can be pretty high in terms of documenting what your project is about. Achtung [the head admin of the Wadhost network] is a fantastic guy and I admire, support, and participate in his requirement of documentation which, I will point out, is exactly the same format people used on BBS in the heyday of Doom and it is excellent that he continues to use this format.

If you are unable or unwilling to use the Wadhost system there's still hope!

A couple of wonderful people in our Zandronum community have set up an automated hosting solution, called best-ever hosting. Their website is http://best-ever.org/ and they can be reached on IRC at irc.zandronum.com #bestever.

I have explicitly asked them if they are ok with MM8BDM being used on this and they have granted permission to use this valuable resource for the purposes of MM8BDM since it uses the Zandronum[/ Skulltag] engine(s) and is compatible with the Doom-style WAD file format. With their automated hosting of course they have a repository for hosting wads as well, located at http://www.best-ever.org/wads/ which is searchable by Doomseeker/ Wadseeker. Although users are not required to document what their projects are in great detail like the new and improved Wadhost, they are still required to register. The goal of this registration process is likely to be able to shut down people who use the site for malicious purposes or for hosting non-wad resources.

For me personally this might have an impact since when Wadhost died a lot of the stuff I had released got lost since I relied almost exclusively on Wadhost for file hosting. I tried to restore most links in posts on the forum using dogsoft and others but there may be some I have missed. I have most everything archived on cd-rom somewhere. Please private message me if you find a non-working link (especially in my achievement challenges thing or other project). I will fix these links as I become aware of their non-working status. The issue of unintentional link breakage is something to consider in enforcement of this rule.

With these resources available to users, this rule should be one that is minimally burdensome to wad authors and I look forward to seeing what new projects and custom content people create and share!

Thanks SSW! And thank Tsuki for telling me how to register on IRC properly.
I've taken the liberty of uploading some map packs (rocpack, gameboymappack, and KCTF) to see if I could actually upload to Best-Ever. All map packs were uploaded successfully, so people should have absolutely no problems using doomseeker to get the obscure wads they need.

So, are we centralizing all WAD hosting to best-ever?

Because centralizing WAD hosting with a Wadseeker-compatible host is pretty cool.

Why not pick 5 sites that are generally either easy to use or popular enough to mantain themselves up and running, and use those as our WAD hosting sites of choice?

I agree with this, I was probably going to do this anyway.

Ok, so I believe I know how there's confusion now, and I think I realize why people are getting upset over this, so I asked Ivory to confirm if I was thinking the same thing xe was thinking and xe said I was correct.

When Ivory says "Projects", xe means the section of topics where classes, CSCM, and whatnot are located.  This does NOT include the skins and bots, maps, work in progress, and other subforums located in the projects section (although it would be nice to post those on the doomseeker friendly sites too).

I guess all we need to do now is make an "official" list of wad file hosting sites that have and/or should be used for MM8BDM files.

OBSCURE WADS. OBSCURE WADS EVERYWHERE.
« Reply #40 on: October 28, 2012, 07:38:58 PM »
I've gone and uploaded almost 30 obscure wads since signing up for Best.Ever. This includes 90% of the wads in the projects section, as well as a couple of W.I.P. modes that people seem to host. If you see a wad that's not on this list, not on best.ever., but still on the MM8BDM servers, let me know.

I'm still missing the seasonal expansions, Tsuki's modes, and Duora's map pack.
