Title: [TUTORIAL] Port Forwarding I CANT SEE MY SERVER ON THE LIST!
Post by: CutmanMike on September 30, 2010, 02:08:59 PM
Introduction

Port Forwarding can be a huge issue when trying to host servers for your favourite PC games. MM8BDM is no exception. It can be a huge issue or a minor inconvenience depending on your router model, your technical know how and how well you can follow this guide!

Most likely you're here because you're behind a router, or have tried to host a MM8BDM server and failed. This tutorial will help you get started on your short/long journey to getting your router to understand that you want people to be able to connect to you!

Understanding you router

It took me a while to figure it all out because there were hardly any guides out there at the time. Today you can usually find helpful guides or forum posts that explain how it all works, but back when I started this it was all guess work.

First of all, you may or may not know that your router actually houses multiple IP addresses. The two you're going to be interested in are you external and internal IP addresses. Your internal IP address is your computer's IP address. It's usually something like 192.168.0.*. If you have more computers that use the router, you'll have the same IP but usually with a different last number. So for example you could have 192.138.0.1 for your computer and 192.138.0.2 for another computer. These are NOT the IP address that other players will connect to. Your external IP address, can be found at http://www.whatismyip.com (http://www.whatismyip.com) and is the IP for the router. This is the IP address that people to connect to (and the one you give out, if you want friends to connect to directly).

Now the great thing about routers is that they're very secure. Unless you specify, certain connections will not be made and it will be impossible for you to host servers for games like Skulltag. What you need to tell your router is which ports are open for each individual computer. This usually involves going on to your router's admin page and simply adding your computer's internal IP address to a list of open ports. How complicated and how much effort is required to do this, is totally up to the manufacturer of your router. Some can be rather simple, while others can be so locked down you have to phone them up to give you access.

Opening the port(s)

IMPORTANT: ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO BACKTRACK THROUGH YOUR STEPS

The first thing you need to do is find out what your computer's INTERNAL IP address is. The easiest way to find this out (for windows users), is to hit the start button and click run (OR windows key + R). Then type cmd and hit enter. You'll get a lovely dos box pop up. In here type ipconfig.

You should see something like this. IP Address is your EXTERNAL. Default gateway is your INTERNAL IP address, which is the one we're after.

Now that we have our internal IP address, type it into the address bar of Internet Explorer. Yup that's right. You should get a login prompt pop up. If you don't know what the login and password is, it's most likely still the default one. Do a google search for your router model and "default password", usually you'll find one fairly easily. If it doesn't work, ask the one who pays the bills (your parents prehaps). If that one happens to be you, and you don't know your own password, you'll probably have to phone your internet provider up and they'll tell you what it is.

Your next step is to open the port for your INTERNAL IP. This is where things can get a bit grey. As most routers differ I can only give you hints to find what you need. Some routers just flat out say "Port Forwarding", while others label them as "Services" or some other weird name. When you've found it, it will usually ask you for your IP address and the port you want to open. The default port for Skulltag servers is 10666 but it can be anything (as long as that anything is the same port you host your sever with). Some routers will have multiple places to put this.

For some help, try searching on google for your router name and "port forward". Usually you'll find either an official guide from the manufacturer or a question and answer on a forum. Google is your best friend here, unless you happen to know someone with the same or similar router. If you give up, your last option is to phone customer support and get them to walk you through it. Sorry!

When you've opened the port (or you think you have) test it out by trying to host a server (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=750) and see if it shows up on the server list (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=728).

Good luck! Post here if you need help and we'll try our best to get you hosting!

192.168.0.1 is usually the ip of the router itself. Can you take a screnshot of your ipconfig window?

Ok as you can see from there, your IP ends in 6. Change the ip address in the port forwarding window to reflect that.

it still doesn't broadcast it online, the server still says lan, how do I get it to be online?

Have you tried changing UDP to TCP?

Skulltag wiki says I should have it on UDP, and I just switched it and still nothing.

Either you're giving out the internal ip when you're supposed to be giving out the external ip.

Also it sounds as if you need to forward ports. viewtopic.php?f=27&t=751 (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=751)

D-Link is acting like Quickman and won't let me find the port. It asks for the Application Name, but none of then choices from the list said Doom II, it only said Hexen II. I am really frustrated by this Quickman-like setup! This is about making me just about quit on trying to make a server. I also don't know where to place the port number, on the TCP or the UDP or Both?

i found port forwarding it looks like this

Ports - Custom Services

Service Name   (box)
Service Type   (box)
Starting Port (box)  (1~65534)
Ending Port     (box)  (1~65534)
Server IP Address   .  .  .

but what do i have to do?.

also this is my first post yay

Name: Mega Man Deathmatch (or anything)
Type: I'm guessing this is a drop down with UDP or TCP? If yes, then UDP
Starting Port: 10666
Ending Port: 10666
Server IP address: You can find this out using ipconfig. Check the first post to see how.

Alright, here's a few screens of mine. Maybe someone can help me out. I thought I forwarded all ports correctly, but I do not seem the name of my server on Doomseeker

Ok here we go:

these are the ports I forwarded for MM8bdm. Both refers to TCP/UDP

This is the page where I add port forwarding things

http://i55.tinypic.com/v7ch2p.png (http://i55.tinypic.com/v7ch2p.png)
This is the page where I enter in the numbers and the type of forwarding and what not

What should I do?

Weird. I port forwarded a long time ago for Skulltag, and it worked fine for both regular Skulltag and 8-Bit DM, but now, nobody can see my server...

I haven't tampered with my ports at all, they have been the same ever since.

Heeeey. Problem. I went to host and it doesnt show up, same problem as everyone else. Can you help?

Here's what I'm confused on: my local IP adress is 192.168.2.102. The program for PortForward says it is static, but I thought that the .2. whould have to be a .1. for that. Also, I have a linksys router. On the main setup page for it, it says my 'Starting IP address is 192.168.2.100. Should I change it?
Also, if you need more info. Tell me.

EDIT: When I make a server, at the bottom of the GUI (if thats what you'd call it) it says my IP is 192.168.2.100:10667. What the heck?
Wow. IPConfig says I have 192.168.2.100 as my IP. What the CRUD!?

EDIT: Oh man. The Status page says its 192.168.2.110. WHAT THE!?

As there's so many people having problems, my only suggestion is to google around for "port forwarding" and your router model. There's BOUND to be someone out there also trying to figure out how to start a server for something, almost every router I've search for has, and had a solution (or a sad tale of the router not letting them do it)

Need some help, not sure what in, so I'm just posting pics of my router thing, and of the IP's from command prompt.
IP's
(click to show/hide)
Router thingy.
(click to show/hide)

If I try to enter 10.0.0.1 into the IP address, it says this.
(click to show/hide)
(NOTE: If it just says Image instead of showing a picture. right click and click "View Picture") Help please. Thanks.
EDIT: Also, not sure if this is relevant or not, but everytime I try to make a server the IP is 10.0.0.7:10667, I did make a server once that was 10666 instead of 10667, but I can't get rid of it. I wasn't sure if this would have anything to do with this.

Just a small tip for people who download programs to automatically port forward for them, those programs rarely work. Do it through your browser manually.

Don't mean to reply on a possible dead topic, but I figured it'd be better than making a whole new topic. Like, others, i have had no problem accessing the port forwarding features of my router (2wire), but i still cannot see the server on the list (I use Doomseeker, by the way, for hosting and joining).

Here is the definition for the application:

Application Name: Skulltag
Protocol: UDP
Port (or Range): From: 10666  To: 10666
Protocol Timeout (seconds): Default (600 seconds)
Map to Host Port: 10666
Application Type: None (Default) (Options are: FTP, Microsoft Games, H.323-based Internet telephony, IRC server, PPTP virtual private network server)

These are the only setting I was given access to. There is no box for entering an IP, although there is a box (in the preliminary screens where you would create a new application to allow through the firewall or what not) where I chose which computer on my network is hosting this application; my own of course. Once I add the definition, this application appears on the list of allowed applications, but when I start the server, the server does not appear on the list.

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

Sometimes when you are successfully hosting, you (just you) can't see the server. Try accessing it from a different computer.

Hello there.  Sorry if this thread is dead or whatnot, but I've followed every single step of this thread, but my router will not let my use my Internal IP address for port forwarding.

I've followed each and every step exactly to the point, and I also looked up specific guides for the router, but nothing has worked.

http://i60.servimg.com/u/f60/15/30/54/08/portfo10.jpg (http://i60.servimg.com/u/f60/15/30/54/08/portfo10.jpg)

That is what my router list displays.  192.168.1.1 is my Default Gateway/Internal IP, as evidenced here:

http://i60.servimg.com/u/f60/15/30/54/08/portfo11.jpg (http://i60.servimg.com/u/f60/15/30/54/08/portfo11.jpg)

but whenever I try to click "Save Settings" it tells me I have an invalid IP address.  Please tell me what I'm doing wrong!

Hit start, run, type cmd. When the cmd window opens, type ipconfig. Look for an ip 192.168.1.X (X is NOT 1), and use that ip.

Bump for me. (even though I shouldn't)

I have a few pictures. Like the above one I showed, that was the online setup.

So I went to the commant prompt and I was given the following after using ipconfig:

Then, I went to the Belkin Setup page in IE and typed the following.

But, once I made the server in MM8BDM, it still says, at the bottom left: LAN

You don't need a printer >.<
Just follow these steps:
1. Open up the router config/where you're having problems.
2. Look on your keyboard for a button that says either "Print Screen", "PRNTSCR", or something similar. If it's a laptop, it may require you to hold down the function/Fn key first.
3. Open mspaint, or any other photo editing program. Paint.net if you want, even photoshop would work.
4. Hit control/ctrl and v at the same time. The picture will paste.
5. Save picture to desktop then upload/post it.

We dont have exactly the same router but close enough.
(click to show/hide)
Name doesn't matter.
Service type: do both to be safe.
Starting and stopping port: I just realized this is the wrong setup... Start with 10666 (I have one setting for just 10666 and one for 10667-10667) and end with 10670, in case skulltag somehow changes it, or you host multiple servers.
Port should end with .2 in your case.

When its done it should look like this:
(click to show/hide)

EDIT: What did you click to get to your forward window, should say custom service.

I set up port forwarding and everything earlier in the week when I started playing again, and everything worked fine (the tutorial helped a lot, for the record).

However, as of today, hosting no longer works. No settings have been changed (although by now I have completely removed and re-downloaded the game to be safe, set everything back up the way it was, etc.) but suddenly the server doesn't show up in Doomseeker. I can connect manually myself, but other computers get a cannot find server error. Is there any idea what is causing this issue?

Been hosting a Team DM Classes server all week that people have seemed to be enjoying, so I'd hate to not be able to do it anymore.

Update: Nevermind, it spontaneously works again today! -_-

aw.. Its called the Server for Testing.

Its running classes v5c and8bdm v2b
Its still running too.

Edit... I forgot, when I was trying to get it to work from doomseeker, i changed something that I couldnt remember of... It kept asking for a version of doom, so Im using the one from the launcher...

Another Edit...
Its almost 5am, and I gotta get to sleep...
So I'll close it and try again later today.

Ok. I did not understand any of this. Do I just host a local server then look at it's ip?

Add me to the list of users unable to put up a server anyone can connect to despite all known factors being set correctly...

Here's the weird part for me, I set 10666 at the forwarded port for my internal ip (set to static dhcp of 192.168.1.80), and in the mm8bdm launcher I leave the default port at 10666,. Public server broadcast is checked, everything is default. I open up doom seeker, and lo and behold, there my external ip is....

"No response"

...

Ok, now the really odd part, it shows my port as 1156...

Now where the heck did that come from? So on a hunch I change my forwarded port as well as the port for the skull tag server to 1156, shutting down the old one beforehand and there I am again...except the port is now 1158.........

Ok, So I keep incrementally increasing the range, and the port continues to fleet, often taunting me with a port one number outside of the range I specified..... I tried setting the range to the max possible ie 0-65535 but at that point I can't even get google to load, not that it would matter since there's no way in hell keep every port on the router to my computer open, even if the server did work then.

I've tried both tcp and udp on at the same time as well as either on by itself, I've tried adding my ip to the router's dmz, no change. I've completely disabled the windows 7 firewall, and I do not have any additional firewall or similar such software running in the background, still nothing.

To add Insult to injury, take a gander at what the skulltag server log tells me:

Ok, I believe I figured out why I will not be able to host a server and am reporting back in the hopes that what I learned will be of any help to those still pulling their hair out at this.

First, read this thread on the skulltag forums: http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic ... 72&t=23236 (http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=172&t=23236)

I determined that my isp is definitely running a router on their end, and in my case, I don't care that much to call them and see if they will allow me to run a skulltag server. (Long story short, it's a hokey local isp outfit that I actually know the owners personally. If it comes down to them having to make a change, I'll just cut my losses and see about a friend running a server.)

Anyways, how did I determine this in my case? Well, my isp provises the service via RF towers, an antenna on the roof recieves the signal. In the house, a PoE (Power over Ethernet) box both powers the antenna and provides the internet via a standard ethernet jack.

From there we can run it to a router, and we do, but it you can also connect your computer straight to said jack. (and if my isp would have it their way, we'd be paying extra to be allowed the 'privilege' of connecting any router to 'their' internet. They still provide the exact same bandwidth, they are just greedy and want the ignorant client to pay more for the exact same thing.)

Anyways, connected via the wireless or wired to the router (different one I was trying before), I can get the proper port I forward (10666) to appear in doomseeker by my ip, albeit still unresponsive. I could get this to work with the other router via upnp, though with the same result: proper port, no response. Connecting via upnp, of course, made no difference with this router. Finally, I decided to try a direct connection to the roof antenna, taking the router entirely out of the equation (we have no modem in this setup btw).

Lo and behold, the problem of the mysterious port I didn't assign problem returned, and upnp threw a NAT error in the skulltag server now. At this point, I was pretty sure that there was a router on the isp end that I could do nothing about blocking me from running a server. I was sure of it when I noticed the WAN (external) IP that my router was reporting: a 192.168.x.x ip, definitely not my WAN IP, but the IP of another router that my router was connecting to.

So if you are experiencing the symptoms that the OP describes in that thread I linked, do yourself a favor and call up your isp about possibly running a small, private game server. If they give you bs like being unable to give you your actual ip or other weirdness and they shrug their shoulders at your problem, either see about finding a better isp, or just give up on serving anything.

I know that depending on how your isp looks at 'running a server of any scale' they may require you pay for a separate option more suited for serving to begin with, ie, one with better upload speeds that servers require. Some will outright turn a blind eye at anything they really don't want the average customer to know about, and if your options are like mine, you really don't have any other choices.

It's just as well that my isp is blocking me from running a server, the download speeds are hardly decent at times; the lag would have most likely been too much to run any kind of game server.

For those of you with a better isp, in terms of overall speed and bandwidth, you might look into trying to get a VPN working or try something like Hamachi: https://secure.logmein.com/products/ham ... nload.aspx (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx) I have successfully ran a netplay server for some emulators in the past at my college with hamachi, but the lag made it beyond unworkable. Scratch that, with a VPN you are directly connecting to other computers via a 'virtual lan' so someone would run a server in LAN only mode, and everyone would connect to said virtual lan to get access to it. It does the same thing more or less, albeit with a lot of lag introduced in many cases.

Unfortunately, a majority of people seem to be suffering through this "same problem".
Even since I changed my ini file, I can host servers, they just don't appear on the list. I tried port forwarding, I've tried changing the ini file again, it just won't work.
I can host if I actually post the IP, but that's tiring Doesn't really make it a public server, per se. Is there any way to fix this?

Hosting a server gives away where your country (unless your unheard of, like me for a bit) your IP info and your ping from the present location. I think that's all, but not sure.

I think I found the solution for servers not appearing on DS's list, and I'm not quite sure it involves ports.

Quote from: "Skulltag Forums"
3. My server does not appear AT ALL on the master server list. Not even <NO RESPONSE>. I can't find my IP on the master server list.

Make sure that 'sv_enforcemasterbanlist' is set to 'true'. Just type 'sv_enforcemasterbanlist 1' into the server window.

4. How can I check if people on the Internet can see my server?

There is a very simple way to do this. Just type 'sv_showlauncherqueries 1' into the server window, hit ENTER and wait a while. After a very short time (usually less than 10 seconds) you should get messages like this one:
Code:
[time_here] Launcher challenge from: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:53920
[time_here] Launcher challenge from: YYY.YYY.YYY.YYY:43543
(and so on...)
NOTE: To turn this off, just simply set the value to zero.

If you get these messages then everything is fine. If you don't it means that your server is not visible from the Internet.
Link to this topic is here: http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=172&t=30603

I did three, and it worked, whoop whoop. This darn problem is finally gone, and I can host again!

Hosting is a major security threat. If someone sends an attack (typically loads of malware/spyware), whether targeted or automated, at whatever port you have open, your computer will accept it. "Zombie computers" and hackers send these attacks out: if they hit a port you're hosting with, you're screwed.

Yes, but you're not going to host a very good server if you're not accepting connections

You can make it more secure by closing the port after each hosting session, but it's a pretty low chance of being nuked from orbit unless you've pissed off some internet tough guys.

Open up CMD and type "ipconfig /all". You should see an entry called "IPv4 Address.........:" Check to make sure it says "192.168.1.101". If it doesn't, but did before, you probably didn't set up a static IP. This means that you'll either need to do that, or you'll need to change the IP that's having its port forwarded every time you reset your computer and want to host.

An old router of mine had the same problem, everything was setup just fine but the server refused to appear on the master list.

You could try activating UPNP on your router settings and adding "-upnp" to the server's custom parameters. Mine refused to work unless I did that, though it may not do anything at all in this case.

Alternatively, try other ports instead of the default 10666 one.

No, you can use whatever you want, all ports work for the same thing as long as you set up your server to use that instead.

You have to set up the server correctly like Megaman94 did in the image above so it doesn't displays that error, it seems you did something wrong, like not pointing out to the files needed or your load order is wrong.

To enter your router settings you usually just need to type "192.168.0.1" on your browser address bar. You'll probably need admin access to it though, so google your router model to find the default username and password for that.

Actually, I'm saying that on the type of router I use, I have no idea how to access port forwarding. *looks at picture for the fourth time* I think I know what the problem is. the server I'm trying to host is a classes server, and I didn't put the regular MM8BDM.pk3 in the extra WADS and files section. I'll try again, and edit in my results.

EDIT: Gah, it still doesn't work. this time, the error message says:
Quote
Script error, "classes-v6f.pk3:actors/classbase.txt" line 580: replaced type 'PainFX' not found in PainFCX
Is this a problem with my copy of the classes mod or something? anyone know what's wrong now?

So, tried to port forward my router to 10667, everything implied to work correctly, yet it still didn't show up properly.

As in, the server seemed to think it was running correctly and everything.

I seem to be having an odd issue. Before I left, my router crashed, and I had to get a new one. With the old router, I had hosted servers for a long time. Since I got the new router, even after setting up port forwarding just like before, my server doesn't show up on Doomseeker. Since I decided to pick the game up again, and MM8BDM has switched to Zandronum, I've tried all over again to set up Port Forwarding, but still nothing. I'm using a Verizon FiOS router, did the whole Custom Ports deal, changed which ports to use about a hundred times, still nothing. Is there something I'm missing?

Posting here again since I've got quite a dilemma.

As you guys can probably figure, I got the above problem fixed. Now there's a new one. I recently switched from Verizon to Xfinity. Day one I set up Port Forwarding, followed all the instructions online to a T, but still when I set up a server it doesn't show up on Doomseeker. Is there something in particular I have to do to get Zandronum to work with a server on Xfinity?

Hey! (and sorry if this is old or discontinued)

I've been searching in a lot of pages for port forwarding and all of them say the same thing.

I already set an static IP (i guess) and i did everything said in the first post but i still can't see my server on Doomseeker when im hosting.

Everytime i search it in DS it says ''no response'',what im doing wrong?I can post screenshots if needed.

So I have my port forwarded and everything. I have port forwarded before so I know it should work. But for some reason my server just won't show up on doomseeker.
