It's purely cultural references though, nothing religious. The games were made in japan after all!

Don't you throw crosses in Castlevania? Could be considered either religious or blasphemous!

Yeah.
THAT was religious, but there's nothing religious about Castlevania.

Does anybody have the original clip that joke is based off of?  I've looked and can't find it.

It's from the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon.  The episode is Bad Day at Peril Park, I believe.  Where that sting music comes from, I don't know.  It never played in that episode at that part.

I knew it was from that cartoon, I just wanted to see the clip.  However, it's not as funny without that music, so never mind.

KRANGAROO?!

well it's basically a joke made by Kajetokun FROM that scene. The theme itself was probably modified from the score I guess...

getting back to that cross in the ceiling of knight man's stage.
from Wikipedia.when training was estimated to be finished, meaning around 18 to 21 years of age, one was knighted. This was done in the following way: the night before went squire into a chapel and prayed to God all night (so called vigil). In the morning, he bathed (a ritual cleansing) and wearing a white shirt, a gold tunic and a purple jacket and then knighted by the King or a knight who acted on the king's behalf. it's because they were Christians or something I guess. i'm a smartie :geek:

What a way to make a first post here, but I feel this must be clarified

Becoming Christian and doing things for Christ is an act of Free Will.

Also, because you play a character of a certain mindset, doesn't mean you have to agree with their mindset. The majority of Castlevania protagonists are shown to be Christian, but just because in some videogames you play as child-slaughtering demons, it doesn't mean you have to be one or enjoy the act of child slaughter. Role playing is all part of the fun of video games :)

Killing children in video games doesn't happen much...
I don't think I've ever seen it happen, actually.

I've seen it in Deus Ex. There are children. If you really want to, you can blow them up with a GEP Gun, beat them with a crowbar or what not.

I think L4D2 implies that the Jockies are mutated children

but that doesn't really count.

oh you know what I meant, I just couldn't think of a good example :p

Jockies are adults, there are no children in L4D(2). They're just retarded and grew short due to the virus.

The first two Fallout games allow it, I believe.

Odd turns this topic has taken.  Yeah, there's a difference between what you like and what the character you control does, but there's also a difference between RPGs and action games in the amount of choice of your character.  Something like Fallout has the mechanics for a wide range of actions and storylines.

That said, I never got the impression that Castlevania was heavy-handed on Christianity, or saw the elements as anything other than part of the setting.  Aside from throwing cross-boomerangs (which I find awesome) and holy water, there was just the occasional cross in the backgrounds of the earliest games.  There were far more monsters from Greek mythology than Judeo-Christian mythology in the series, at least until Symphony of the Night came along.  And doesn't Aria of Sorrow start at a Shinto shrine?  All-in-all, Castlevania is probably a grab-bag of myths.

There's an orphanage level in the Painkiller expansion where you kill a bunch of children. Granted, they are demon children, but still

I really don't think mavrick meant to be literal about the child-killing demon thing, lol.  It's just, in many video games you play as something that you yourself are nor, or would not like to be; such as a giant blue hedgehog or a pudgy little Italian man.  And then sometimes you're really messed up guys that you'd never WANT to be (at least in the situation they're in at the beginning of the game) i.e. most the Grand Theft Auto protagonists no matter how much you love playing those games--if it were YOU, in real life, you wouldn't be able to pull off the things those guys pull off.  You wouldn't wanna be those guys.  But it's fun to play as them.

So Castlevania has some Christian undertones considering these guys fighting Dracula and evil itself are basically holy warriors--the crosses, holy water, sacred weapons, Trevor kneeling in front of the cross at the beginning of Castlevania 3, Leon Belmont being a Crusader, etc.  -- yeah, these guys are mostly Christians, or at least "holy" enough to be able to use items like Holy Water as effective weapons (i.e. Alucard); but the games themselves are never remotely heavy with Christian undertones, it's just what your playable characters tend to be based off of--holy warriors who'd fight against evil, fantasties from medieval times when people really thought enemies like that existed in reality and needed to be hunted and killed.  Of course, that's  just the raw basis of the idea for the series and as has bene mentioned there's plenty of Greek, Egyptian and various other mythologies strewn all around the games, and from the very first Castlevania/Akumajo Dracula the real main influence would seem to be classic monster films much more than real-world Christian mythology.

Plus, realize that back in the day Nintendo of America was even kind enough to censor the 'Cross' subweapon as the 'boomerang' and edit out religious implications in the backgrounds; plus, you gotta consider heroes like Soma Cruz in some of the newer entries of the series who could hardly be considered Christian, though who knows.

Basically, yeah, don't worry about it 8)
