Title: Elecman = Journey?
Post by: Setzer on October 23, 2010, 05:43:32 AM
I'm sure this has been mentioned countless times before, but does anyone else notice the similarities between Elecman's theme, and Journey's Faithfully?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVs4jDL-JBo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVs4jDL-JBo)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjnnxsWIA_0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjnnxsWIA_0)

I personally think it was just a simple melody that happened to get repeated, but it just seems all too coincidental. What do you guys think about this one?

So that's what that song was. Nice discovery :3

I found the same, except, I found out that Journey song was more recent (newer than Elec Man's theme!) which means Journey sounds like Elec Man, lol.
*edit: the recording of Journey i saw was new, pretty sure the song is older than 1987.

Not only that, here are other songs that sound like them both:

Bullet for my Valentine: Forever and Always: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7vFTHQ-Q2s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7vFTHQ-Q2s) (more notably the last 2 mins. of the song).

But then, i found a link to this song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYidHOAfzaY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYidHOAfzaY)

And this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rp6bxsOVk8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rp6bxsOVk8)

And very vaguely like the chorus in this one (lol!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIrCFrFpHvw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIrCFrFpHvw)

Coz I'm not a huge Journey fan (i know, shock, lol) I didn't know about the Journey song. The song that got me looking for Elec Man's similarities was the one from Bullet. A good discovery though!   So all the songs (except for the Bullet one) i found out from youtube.

It's just a very popular collection of notes it seems.

I think it's safe to say Elecman's stage theme and Journey- Faithfully are pretty much the same song, the only difference is instruments used and one has lyrics.

Lol, I can't imagine chiptune in Faithfully or real instruments on an NES-Cartridge   :p ...

Hahahaha, Brotoad, that vid was good! Pretty much linked all the songs together. Bah, that staged annoyed me the first time I played (when I was about 8). Although watching this guy made me nervous... i was like "Jump on the edges!" >_< lol.

Ha ha yeah, I noticed in the Metallica song Seek and Destroy, and how that part in Flash Man's music sounded similar. On the subject of Metallica, here's some other ones I noticed:

When I picked up the special item in MM4, the fanfare sounded very familiar:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsvByN42Ei8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsvByN42Ei8)
To this song from Metallica (chorus at 2:00): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEQnzs8wl6E (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEQnzs8wl6E)

This one not so much, but MM2's stage select music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzIjbB9NrWE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzIjbB9NrWE)
Sort of reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z-hEyVQDRA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z-hEyVQDRA)

On the topic of similarities in video games... any Doom fans should check out this vid (if they haven't already).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H3BB2gKKeY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H3BB2gKKeY)

I think what we can see here is that video game music is definitely inspired by real music (in this case, rock and metal! m/)

EDIT: The Doom song "I sawed the Demons" sounds a lot like Mega Man 2's stage select theme as well (more so than Big Gun by AC/DC).

Well yeah, I knew that. Doesn't make Doom's soundtrack anything less then awesome though.

Oh no, if anything it makes it more awesome.
My friend (massive Doom fan) at first felt cheated by this, but then he realised that Doom's inspirations weren't a bad thing at all. Doom definitely has that dark feel, mixed with metal and symphonies etc. To see its inspirations is a good thing. And yeah, safe to say Mega Man had inspirations from real songs. I don't think they set out to "copy" them, not at all, but definitely inspired by them (even if sub-consciously).

Also, does anyone see any similarity between Shade Man's theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxSWjJmz1Dk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxSWjJmz1Dk)
And the solo at 1:37 in Judas Priest's Hell Bent for Leather? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpCfWn5TQkI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpCfWn5TQkI)
Not necessarily the lead, more the rhythm track, but the fact the lead plays the way it does with the rhythm track is what reminds me of it.

Also, one could say the Command & Conquer cover looks like that Judas Priest Album cover, lol: http://oscarolim.com/wp-content/uploads ... onquer.gif (http://oscarolim.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/command-and-conquer.gif)

Ah interesting. Ah yeah, I'm not saying that Id made the game and suddenly "zomg, did they notice the songs were similar?" or "they secretly ripped off songs" I actually think they were genuinely inspired by certain bands, and in a way were paying tribute to them when making the music for Doom.

As for Elec Man and Journey... not sure, but it seems Metallica pops in every now and then. Mega Man was definitely inspired by certain artists, but in a way the songs turned out a lot less similar to the original inspirations; compared to the Doom songs/ other bands songs comparison.

I wanna find more now, ha ha. I have a feeling there's this particular NES game that had massive inspiration by a band. I do know that the cover of Contra was inspired by Arnie, Stallone and Aliens.

Well Bobby Prince the composer of the soundtrack for Doom is also a lawyer.
He knew how many samples he could take without being sued.

Pretty awesome really.

He was a lawyer? Oh wow, that's awesome, ha ha. Yeah he would know how much to use etc. Interesting, I did not know this.

Hmm, can't think of any more Mega Man comparisons at this stage. I think the main ones were already mentioned.

EDIT:
Someone's done the work for us, lol:

I disagree with like half the songs, but I love the Neon Tiger comparison. Listening to Neon Tiger's stage, it sounds like you could play it on guitar (power chords).

On the topic of Flash Man, this reminds me of it!

Capcom made this I think before Mega Man 2? But definitely after MM1 though.

Having said that, this reminds me of MM1's Wily stage 1.

I don't think so.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Don't the guys at CAPCOM generally like American (or at least bands that sing in English) 70's and 80's bands?

Going back to Elecman/Journey, I'd say that Capcom would definately be fans of rock and metal of the 70's and 80's etc. but as for deliberately making a song sound like an existing one, I think not. I think it was something that happened sub-conciously. At least with me, when I create a tune on guitar or something, I like to make it sound original (but with definite influences). If I made a song and realised it sounded too much like an existing one, i'd probably tweak it. If I didn't realise until afterwards, it would be my sub-concious that made that song with the help of some big influences.

In short, yes Capcom may have been Journey fans, but no, I don't think they deliberately made Elec Man to sound like Faithfully. Though they may have been paying some tribute/homage... who knows?
