What happens if you defeat Quint?
I'll put this in spoiler to in case if someone doesn't defeat Quint yet, and no this isn't how to defeat it. It's explained what happens when you defeat him.
After you defeat him, his helmet falls of his head. He after that says that Dr. Wily was right that being forgotten is worse than death. After that he explodes. Collect his helmet to get Quint Trophy.
BASICALLY. Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch's main character is not Mega Man. It is you, the Player, who is the hero. This game takes place after Mega Man 6 and its story completely overwrites everything that happened afterwards.
A number of years pass, with you, the Player, being regarded as the greatest robotic hero the world has ever seen.
This part is me speculating, but it's implied that Dr. Wily points out that Mega Man is no longer the greatest hero and that he was supposed to be, and that the world had forgotten the greatness Mega Man had once been a part of.
You crushed the life of a powerless Mega Man and stole the glory from right under his nose.
Mega Man, having been modified into Quint, returns to the past and attempts to return the timeline to the way it should be, by removing you.
At the end of the fight, Quint dies, having lived the past several years of his life in your shadow. A mere scrap of the robot he used to be.
I may have exaggerated a little bit, but that's what I gathered from the story.

I mean, it makes sense why he's so hard. He's trying to get his life back!

There was the time he threw Gutsman to save you from being reprogrammed. Then fought alongside you as you prepared to storm King's fortress in the Mega Man & Bass chapter. Even though that sorta becomes all the light bots eventually.
