Mmm, in that case I'm REALLY grindin' yer gears, YD.
Why? I hate Call of Duty with a passion. First of all, it's infested with smack-talking little kids, while, you CAN mute them, if you end up not muting them, they whine, whine, whiiiine. Second, and I know I'm getting shot for this one, but it's unrealistic. Getting shot a lot in the foot or leg would not kill you. Might paralyze you, but it certainly wouldn't kill you, until the blood goes away.
Third, EVERY WEAPON CAN KILL YOU IN ONE HIT ASDFAJSDFHAKDSJH.

I see you've had a bad experience.

CALL OF DUTY DEFENCE MODE ACTIVATE!

Kids are the only ones that use mics. There's a lot of really good, 18+ players but they're either mic shy or don't own one, the kids just complained to their mums 'till they got them. In fact, a kid was being really annoying so I plugged in my mic, and told him CoD was an 18+. His mum was evidently in the room with him, she shouted at him and he disconnected. Lol.

Secondly, it is unrealistic. It's a game. Not every weapon kills you in one hit, but you don't have much health I agree. That's why you've got to think tactically. In MW2 a lot of weapons killed you in 3-5 hits, 2 for a headshot, but all the other games in the series were much easier. I think the AK-47 in Modern Warfare killed you in 6 hits? Black Ops is much better about this. You survive quite a bit longer, and your health auto-regenerates anyway.

CALL OF DUTY DEFENCE MODE DEACTIVATED.
RESUMING REGULAR ROUTINE.

A summary of a CoD MW2 match

*spawn, realize higher Tier players have better weapons, kill you with them, you lose, you ask where the fun is*

The fact that there are even Tiers in a Shootan-gaem to begin with is asinine in its own right.  But hey, maybe Black Ops will be better! ...ah who'm I kidding, it's Activision.

I also don't have a problem with Call of Duty.  My roommate played it religiously last year and it was pretty fun to watch.  I started a profile and nearly completed the campaign.  Very fun.  However, I have a problem with people who believe a generic FPS set in drab environments (other than Black Ops, thank God for the jungle) is the single greatest game ever.  At least Halo has some fun weapons that mix it up (Gravity Hammer, anyone?).

Tell me what grinds your gears

You grind my gears, like so freakin' bad it hurts. Your logic is flawed on so many levels. And you're on a high horse for some reason.

So basically, something new cannot be the best simply because... (AMIGAWSH) it was not the first? Dude, seriously? Are you confusing words here? Best does not equal "original". Originality, while a good thing, doesn't mean it's necessarily even good. Besides that, there is such a thing as improvement. If you polish the original concept for 20 years, of course you will come out with something better, unless nostalgia punches you in the face. I seriously cannot fathom the stupidity of discounting anything new simply because it's not old.

And then you proceed to say "know your history of gaming", just like you cannot possibly know about old games because you enjoy new. You're blinded by your own ego and nostalgia. Grow up.

But anyway, let's get a scenario up in this bitch, shall we? Are you stupid if you say Mega Man 10 is the best one simply because it's not the first Mega Man? How does that work? And does the one calling Mega Man 10 the best "know nothing about the history of Mega Man", simply because he prefers the game that came later? Treat each game as seperate entities. Originality has nothing to do with quality. A rather sucky game can be original, and a superb game can be unoriginal.

I guess you would also say someone who thinks a movie from the '90s is the best are nubcakes who know nothing about movies. I mean, last time you checked, some stuff from the early 1900s defined movies. Clearly, the first movie ever made is the best -- these idiots don't know anything. Because older is better. Quality has nothing to do with anything.

Besides... Wolfenstein 3D? Seriously? It may have been one of the very first, but it's seriously not very good at all if you ask me, let alone is it anywhere near the best. It's as simple as it gets. Too simple. Very bland. Not only are you dead-wrong, but I would say you have poor taste if you consider that to be one of the best games, sir. Most influential, suuure. But that's all it is.

Agree with the above post.  Doom and Wolf3D may have been innovators but they certainly aren't the best.

CoDMW2 isn't the best either.  Not by a long shot, but at least its better than Doom and Wolf 3D.

I can't stand Wolf3D. It's so...boring. You run about a maze looking for keys, beating up the same enemies again, and again. Everything looks the same, the guns are virtually just faster versions of the last. Boring Boring Boring. Sure it was an innovator, but that doesn't change the fact I rather watch paint dry then play Wolf3D. Doom exceeded it in every last category.
Wolfenstein laid down the foundations, Doom built on that.

However, I would strongly disagree that CoDMW2 is better than Doom. Anyone who disagrees has to take a look at the fact, Doom's still living to this day. The community has not died, and it's still actively modded for. Like the very mod that 99% of you are here to play.

Doom's gameplay has never been replicated by modern games. You aren't a spartan with recharging shields, or magic powers. You're fast. That's what makes the Doom Marine powerful. The fact you can dodge and weave between enemy bullets alone is something you don't see in Modern FPS games, outside of "bullet times".

Doom is still one of the top fps games ever crafted. There is a reason why the community still lives on. And there is a reason why most modern fps games these days bore me to death.

If anyone is interested, http://vectorpoem.com/news/?p=74
This should be very informative to why Doom is still alive today.
Title: Re: What Grinds my gears
Post by: brotoad on November 15, 2010, 02:47:24 AM
doom is fun, but the community is moreso thriving because the engine is so easy to build on, rather than the original game itself. all the mods generally improve on the original, or turn it into a new game entirely

i doubt the fanbase would be as huge as it is now without that modding aspect.

doom of course is a great game, but in it's original form it's pretty dated, and although i can clearly understand why many people would prefer it to newer fps games like halo because of its fast paced action, liking it better simply because it's the first and not giving newer games a chance is very obnoxious

Yeah, don't get me wrong here. I love DOOM. It belongs in my top 50. But that said, many other first-person shooters come before it.

Also, I'm not saying you CANNOT possibly like Wolfenstein 3D or DOOM more than any other FPS. It was just the logic behind the statement that was severely flawed.

it's groundbreaking really, not just because it's a great game, but because it's actually a good movie tie in! although there were plenty of good movie tie in games for the NES, they've gotten a pretty bad opinion towards them nowadays

Wow, you like Metal Arms, Brotoad? That's awesome. It's a great game.

Buy it, make sure you have several controls, and get some friends together. You're pretty much guaranteed to have a blast. Never heard anyone say anything negative about GoldenEye's multiplayer.

The single player is also great, though, in my opinion. Love some of the stages. Especially Frigate. And it only becomes more fun when you've unlocked some of the cheats.

metal arms was a great game indeed, i loved the gun that let you control the enemies, real neat gameplay there! and if you ever tried it out with friends, the multiplayer was AWESOME. great singleplayer, great multiplayer, awesome graphics too, and the characters were great! especially how that swearing mechanic robot was voiced by homer simpson ahaha

Doom's got great labyrinthine levels and it's pretty immersive, but I've never beaten it.  It gets too boring after awhile.

Quake, now, that's another story.  I can own me some Quake.  I've played it on every game system I've ever owned.  My 1996 Dos PC, my 2002 PC, my current PC, my Dreamcast, My DS, my Wii...  That game just never gets old to me.  I love it, I love its sequels, and no matter what anyone says, Quake has got to be Top Dog in the FPS biz, at least for me.  If not Quake, then Half-Life.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are tied for a close second or third place.

Similar to Ocarina of Time. In fact, that grinds my gears. People say it was THE BEST LOZ GAME EVERRRR OMGGGGG and I hated it. Majora's Mask was better. Twilight Princess was better. People just loved it because it was the first 3D LOZ they played and it's special to them.

Similar to a certain person who despises Sunshine. It was better than 64.

^This. Twilight Princess majorly sucked, it's just any fanboy's dream to play a LoZ with a handsome, not polygonic Link. But I do agree Majora's has some neat features I loved, specially difficulty and that dark feeling most games dont have.

Did you even read his post?  He said Twilight Princess was better than Ocarina, and then you said Twilight Princess sucked.

Anyhoo, oddly enough, I can't get into the 3-D Zelda's, but I can remain interested in the 2D ones just fine.  Of the 3-D ones, I'd still say Ocarina is the best.  Twilight Princess starts too slow and the plot has many confusing holes, especially at the beginning, that are given half-assed explanations that make no sense.  I think I have a fear of wide-open spaces with nothing around, so Wind Waker gets a definite "no" there.  Plus, although I never made it that far, just watching the map hunt was enough to tell it was tedious.  Majora is fun, but I hate being pressured to finish crap in 3 days.  Plus, compared to Ocarina, it's just so much less epic in scale.  That, and there's that ass backwards saving system with the owl statues.  My roommate forgot that your save from the owl statues becomes erased after you start, so he had to go through the entire Zora egg hunt again because of it.

Nice way to overreact. I did read it, what I meant is that gameplay and story wise, considering console and age both games got into sale, Twilight DOES suck compared to Ocarina of Time. That's what I meant, sorry for not explaining myself correctly. Besides, it's not like I'm attacking him, he's a pretty cool guy that doesn't afraid of anything, I was just stating my opinion on the matter. Ocarina is way too epic to be compared with a over-hyped game with bad controls and a story line that, for a zelda fan, is just a let down since it has nothing to do with the rest of the games in any way (I lol'd at Zoras, like what the eff). Maybe nostalgia has something to do with it, but who cares. Also, Majora's mask IS awkward, I hate the owl statue system to the core, but the dark characters you get to meet, their stories and such make an amazing ambient for the player. And I had more fun getting every mask and item than in any other Zelda game.

You're one of the first persons I've met that thinks Wind Waker is just way too tedious. All of my friends love the freaking game, maybe it's the cel-shaded graphics. You spend 80% of the game sailing. I stopped playing when I got to the Triforce shards thingy and sold the game to a friend afterwards. Just ew.

I personally enjoyed Wind Waker a lot. The sailing was annoying but at some point, you just start to hum along with the tunes while going from place to place....or at least I did.

Twilight Princess was ok, kept me amused but I can't really say it lived up to my expectations.

I'm also totally clueless on how good Majora's Mask is as I....never played it D;

Also something that totally grinds my gears....console wars. The neverending struggle to decide the best when no one can agree =/

Because you can't define the "best" Each console has something going for it. Each one has it's strength and weaknesses. There was a true winner, and never will be. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, opinions and experiences. To define the best console is ridiculously stupid. And all it does is create unneeded conflict.

Ah, i know one. HAVING TO BUY WEAPONS!!! Why!?! Like 95% of all the other FPS games at some point give it to you, as a reward, as preperation, or just for the sake of it. I can understand shops in games where you shoot people, etc, and progress, but how... What was it... the ST mod All Out War does it... GAH, i'd rather EARN them, i'd rather go through hell to get them, not WAIT, get killed by better equipped players, possibily lose money, only to THEN get a weapon! Ugh, i'd play it if it wasnt for its shitty weapon buying system. Multiplayer doesnt wait, players dont wait, just give us the damn weapons or let us earn them somehow. (Or atleast KEEP them!)

And while i was reading through the topic and saw stuff about Doom, admittedly the original game itself isnt too... Interesting, but the dodging aspect combined with good weapons against tons of monsters in Invasion (preferabaly infinite lives) just never gets old, hehe... Except those godamn SSG guys, hate them... Ah, lobbing grenades at gigantic groups of weaker demons like zombiemen...

if i wanted to play an old school fps, gimme duke 3D anyday!
of course my favourite fps games ever are goldeneye and timesplitters
and even then i actually prefer third person shooters thanks to a game called metal arms: glitch in the system

i love you soooooooooooo much since i have and love all three of those games.
my brother just recently beat small arms on medium difficultly, but daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn that game was hard. still play TS future perfect i love it on my game cube better but i lost that copy so i have to play it on my playstation and i still love to dust off the old N64 and pop in duke nukem (or paper Mario) and play away...but sadly my friend had goldeneye and i always went over there to play it. and he moved!

Zdoom takes a crap load of code from other games and a lot of unique code. It runs on a very modified id-Tech 1 engine.

There, I've concluded that arguement.

People who shoot other people for the ten seconds between Roboenza matches!
It is annoying and loud!

Do you wish to know what grinds my gears? Grammar Nazis. They use absolutely no contractions, have their capitalization perfect, have their punctuation perfect, and don't even use abbreviations even in places where it doesn't matter. Grammar Nazis are what grinds my gears. Do you have a problem with that? Then you can get the punk out.

Korby, your attempt to grind my gears as already failed, since Hell has a capital "H", not a lowercase "h". And, when naming someone in a sentence, you must put a comma.

But meh, you're my favorite Robot Master from Megaman 8 and Megaman & Bass, so i'll give oyu an E-Tank anyways.

i'm not really a gamer, but if i'm going to play a game and enjoy it i'll get out my Atari or something :).

But yeah I hate these TF2, Cod, Halo etc fags.. i've never played these games.. and i'm sick of hearing about them.. especailly when they come into XDuke or ST server and start refrencing them... stupid kids who missed most of the 90's and their new gen crap.
