Title: Connecting to server problem
Post by: Jao on December 12, 2010, 03:46:54 AM
Here is the problem:
I have two computers in my house, in computer 1, I did everything correctly on port fowarding, in computer 2, I go to doomseeker to connect to computer 1 to play MM8BDM, the server is there, I click to connect, but then, it will show a screen with a blue background saying a lot of things, like the IP I'm connecting to,etc. and in this screen, at the end, it will keep saying:
Connecting to "IP"
Connecting to "IP"
Connecting to "IP"
(In the IP, it shows the full IP I'm connecting to)
And it won't connect! It will just keep appearing this!
BTW I can connect normally to other servers, it's just this one this happens.
Does anyone know what's going on? :?
Here is an image of how my port fowarding settings are:

A few questions to make sure I understand what you're trying to do.  You have two computers on the same network behind a router/firewall.  Are you trying to have one of them act as a server?  Or do you just want both of them to be multiplayer clients, able to connect to someone else's server simultaneously?

I want to host a server on computer 1, and connect to that server on computer 2, I wanna play MM8BDM with my brother, with him playing on computer 1 and me on computer 2.
I wanna play me vs my brother using 2 computers.

Look, for the first time I tried, on Computer 2, it shows the blue screen and it won't stop saying: Requesting Snapshot. And on Computer 1: Unknown challenge (2) from 192.168.0.102:10667. Ignoring IP for 10 seconds.
After this, I quit the game, tried again, and that thing I posted on the 1st post begins to happen. I tried again today and it said: Requesting Snapshot.
What is going on? :?

First of all, port forwarding is not going to cause a connectivity problem between two PCs on the same network.  You only need to worry about port forwarding on your router if you want PCs from outside of your network (i.e., the Internet) to be able to connect to your MM8BDM server.

Someone who understands Skulltag will be able to better find the solution to this, I think.  It seems to me that message indicates the server is receiving packets from the other PC (and so, the one you're trying to run the server on seems to have its firewall configured to accept incoming connections on whichever UDP port you've set MM8BDM to use).  However, the only thing I've been able to come up with through a Google search was that there are apparently versions of Skulltag (the Doom II engine MM8BDM is using) which are "not network compatible."  But I don't know if there was ever a release of MM8BDM which used one of those Skulltag versions.

Could you post a screenshot of the Host tab of the launcher for computer 1, please?  Also, are both computers able to connect to MM8BDM servers on the Internet?  I couldn't tell if you were only referring to one or both as being able to connect, up in the first post.

Yes, both computers are able to connect to MM8BDM servers, they connect normally to any other MM8BDM servers, only one connect to another doesn't work. IT'S NOT THAT NOBODY CAN CONNECT TO MY SERVER, SOME PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY CONNECTED TO IT, SO THE PROBLEM IS NOT THAT NOBODY CONNECT TO IT.  What I really want to know is what does that "Requesing Snapshot" mean, it will just say that on the blue screen!
HERE IS WHAT IS HAPPENING: WHEN ON COMPUTER 2 I CONNECT TO COMPUTER 1 THIS IS WHAT SHOW ON COMPUTER 2: THAT BLUE SCREEN SAYING "REQUESTING SNAPSHOT" ALL THE TIME, AND AT THE SAME TIME ON COMPUTER 1, IT SAYS ON THE HOST PAGE ON THE LAUNCH (IN THE LAST PIC OF THIS POST) Unknown challenge (2) from 192.168.0.102:10667. Ignoring IP for 10 seconds. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SHOULD I DO?
and here is that pic:

Is this what you want? Or this:

Yep.  Hmm... I don't see any problems with max players or spectators, and you're using the default port so that shouldn't be the problem...  As I wrote earlier, I think someone else who actually knows Skulltag will have a better chance of understanding this problem.  Wish I could find something about that "unknown challenge (2)" message for you, but I haven't found any documentation on error messages, yet.  :(

I can explain this a little bit.  That blue screen is the console, but it isn't usually displayed when the game is running.  By default, the key to open the console is the tilde key (~) and the escape key will close it.  You can read messages from the game in that as well as type commands (http://www.skulltag.com/wiki/Commands) such as connect, disconnect, bind, changemus , callvote changemap mm1cut and so on to control the game.

If you open the console after joining your own server, you'll notice that "requesting snapshot" is always the first thing that appears in there during the process of joining a server.  I don't know exactly what the "snapshot" is, but I'm guessing it would be things such as the current values for the  health and ammunition of other players.  The message itself is normal.  Computer 2 is seeing the message multiple times because the connection process is failing at that step, so it makes the request over and over.  If the connection were successful, it would move onto "receiving snapshot," then the version of Skulltag being used and finally "*username* has connected."

Well, that message only appears when on the other computer it says: "Requesting snapshot". That means that when it says Requesting snapshot on computer 2, at the same time on computer 1 it says "unknown challenge (2)..." I hope that helped a bit.

Have you tried reinstalling MM8BDM v1c?  On either computer?

I tried to do that, but still says "Requesting Snapshot!
Oh and BTW , when I connect to a server and play, when i shoot, the projectile takes a bit of time to come out, like less than a second, the shot delays (this only happens when I am on a server that is not mine, when I connect to another server) Is this because of my computer speed?

It's because your internet sucks. What country do you live in?

Jao's problem in the original post is not related to an Internet connection at all.  In my opinion, it isn't even hardware related.

I did find a second topic on the Skulltag forums (http://www.skulltag.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=172&t=22741&start=0), but it looks like that person's issue was never resolved.  The number after "unknown challenge" is different, but the server also had an "incorrect version" message.  Have you seen that message at all?
