Title: The Nintendo Unofficial Expansions
Post by: Mr. X on December 14, 2010, 10:31:42 PM
Hi, everybody!  I just had a great idea for an expansion:  an expansion pack based on other classic Nintendo games.  Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Kirby's Adventure, Contra, Castlevania, anything else you can think of!  In order for this pack to be most effective, I'd need a variety of skins, maps, and maybe weapons, so anybody who can do those things can sign up.

HOWEVER, I must make this clear:  I want this to be a quality pack, so I'm not accepting anything and everything that gets thrown my way.  Anyways, I kind of just thought of this, and with holidays approaching, it's not going to be done by the end of the year, or maybe not even by the end of next month.  It will be done whenever I feel we have enough material.  Anyways, if you want to contribute, feel free to tell me what you'd like to contribute.  Just remember, I have the right to reject anything, and I will use that right.

THERE ARE NOW TWO EXPANSIONS
The Nintendo Classics Expansion covers only NES and Gameboy (color) games.

The Nintendo Retro-fied Expansion (for lack of a better title) covers consoles beyond the 8-bit era, but 8-bitified.  For right now, the list of submissions will be combined and then separated when it comes time to compile the packs.

Criteria for Submissions (subject to change)
-The submission must be from a game tied closely to Nintendo.  For example, although Castlevania has expanded beyond Nintendo, it's roots lie in the NES, so it counts.
-The submission must be 8-bit.  Duh.
-The submission can be from a Nintendo console beyond the NES.  However, it must be converted to 8-bit.
-No extremely obscure games.  Part of being a classic is actually being known.

i wouldnt mind doing lots of zelda stuff,
including hyrule castle, hyrule feild, and maybe a few others, but would i have to do my own tiles and things? if so i dont think i can do anything as of now.
if so though id like to do zelda mainly,
but you can put me down for ridley's lair aka norfair
and i wanna do banjo kazooie and tooie stages
which was nintendo, but it might take me a while to do  all these these, so idk if i could put them in this pack..
but once again, if i have to do my own tiles, ignore this as of now

Well, considering Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie weren't 8-bit, yes, you'd have to do your own tiles.  I'll put you down for Norfair, but considering I have yet to see you make a map, I'm doubtful of it.

Well crap, I was doing the exact same thing as a side project with my friends. Right now I'm working on some Mario and LoZ weapons, I'll submit them when they're finished.
One question though, is there going to be palette change on each weapon? I hope not because it'd be awkward in my opinion.
Title: Re: The Nintendo Classics Unofficial Expansion
Post by: Mr. X on December 15, 2010, 12:21:20 AM
Well, there should be a palette change.  It would only make sense with the other weapons.

I could make pallet town and viredian city and teh route inbetween them, thought I have no textures for it so I'd need someone to texture it foe me

I've said this about 20 times in at least 2 different threads.  Open the wad using SlumpEd, import the images you used for textures, and you're good to go.

Ah, seeing as I'm pretty much the only person who's completely figured out the color change, I guess I could do that for people.

I think I'm going to start a vote regarding non-NES games.  I want to ask the people which direction they think this should take.
Title: Re: The Nintendo Classics Unofficial Expansion
Post by: Lio on December 16, 2010, 01:09:32 AM
I voted NES games only. A mash up of random games that have no relation whatsoever makes no sense in my opinion. Maybe GB games are acceptable, but only NES sounds more coherent to me.

If I have time I will make a Link's Awakening map but I'm not too fond of the Oracles.

How's the turnip going, Korbster? Once that's done and dusted my map is practically finished.

Title: Re: The Nintendo Classics Unofficial Expansion
Post by: Korby on December 16, 2010, 05:53:25 PM
When I used it, it was super arm, not turnip.
It behaved EXACTLY like Super Arm. You didn't even change the coding to make it throw turnips instead of rocks.
Title: Re: The Nintendo Classics Unofficial Expansion
Post by: Max on December 16, 2010, 05:55:05 PM
Yeah I sent you another PM because I used too many letters in the filenames for the sprites, if you removed the A in each of the sprite names it would've worked. And none of the changes I made to the coding did anything so I just assumed I had to compile it (which I can't do)
Title: Re: The Nintendo Classics Unofficial Expansion
Post by: Korby on December 16, 2010, 05:57:44 PM
You could have at least removed the coding for the Armlettes.

Title: Re: The Nintendo Classics Unofficial Expansion
Post by: Max on December 16, 2010, 06:05:45 PM
Well I couldn't fix it myself, it's still Super Arm so I suppose the SMB2 map will just use MM8BDM weapons.

After you fix it up, Legofan.

But I can definitely imagine a vast Hyrule Field from Legend of Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time.
May be difficult to make them slanted paths and hills, I'm guessing... but it'd be worth it.

Ok, I just thought of something that really should have been easy to think of.

THERE WILL BE TWO HALVES OF THE EXPANSION (or two expansions, your choice)

1)  NES and GB(C) games only
2)  Other, more powerful Nintendo consoles 8-bitified.

Any objections?

I'd prefer you just pick a game and stick with it.  Besides, the two Oracle games could have interesting gimmicks.  Holodrum could have areas with different seasons and Lybranna could have a teleporter between past and present.  In fact, I might make one of those maps, it sounds like fun!

An idea for the LoZ weapon could be like a mask from Majora's Mask like maybe it can be for the goron you punch with powerful knockback and medium strength and for the zora from what I remember from MM is they throw boomeranges. Just some ideas.

There's a Link Skin already
There is? Where is it?
I don't actually know. It was in Blue's super big skin pack of awesomeness and it's a crappy Megaman edit... who uses a buster to attack.
Actually, I was making a Gameboy Link skin but never got to finish it since I got a bigger project to attend. If it's needed, I can finish it up but if someone really wants to skin it I don't mind either.

Currently working on some pokemon skins. I'll post them when they're done, but put me on the list please.

I'm partial to breaking tradition and making it say "You got the Slingshot!" instead of "Power up! Slingshot!"

I agree, having it say "You got the Slingshot!" would be much better.

Or even better, and more like the Zelda games, it broadcasts a message saying:

"[name] FOUND THE SLINGSHOT!"

Korby... I might suggest SWORD LAZORBEEMS!!!!!!111!!!11!!1!
No but seriously, if it weren't hard to program you could do 70%HP+ is lazors and 69%HP- is regular sword. Because full health is too hard to maintain.

Alternatively, could be done in OOA/OOS Ring method (except that it would beam only at 30% or less health?)

Sounds equally coolio. Better, actually.

Now this looks like something I can really sink my teeth into.  Feel free to use my yoshi skin (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1562) for this, though it's already released I'd be happy to have it included as a part of this as well if that's possible.

I can think of many, many skins I could make to contribute to this, as well.  Is there a "deadline" of any kind or is it going to be like an ongoing project?

I swear, I make myself look like an idiot here more than any other place I've ever been.  It's like I get stupider the more I'm on the internet.

Same here, actually. I tend to overlook obvious things and end up looking really stupid!

In other news, I've essentially finished the Ember Seed for the slingshot. I just need to fix one tiny bug..

Also, Wind Seed will be lol.

[EDIT] How will you change seed types? An item pickup? Different charge levels? Or different weapons altogether?

Despite this being a bump, seed types are switched every time you fire. If I remember correctly, the order is Ember Scent Pegasus Gale Mystery.

I guess it will be either with AltFire/Second Fire OR pressing the same Weapon Slot Number (like in doom you could use Shotgun or SuperShotgun, by swapping them by pressing "3", or in Skulltag with Minigun & Chaingun, Grenade Launcher & Rocket Launcher, Plasma Gun & Rail Gun, BFG9K & BFG10K)

This is Oracle of Season's slingshot. There was no Deku Seed fired from a slingshot in that game.

SmashBroPlusB, why bump this obviously dead/nearly dead topic?  Obviously, I'm gone (other than to say this) from this board for a while, so this is not going to go anywhere until I get back, which is who knows when.

I'm reasonably sure most of the people that annoy me are aware they annoy me.  Either way, mainly option 1 is why I remain away.  I just don't care about this game now, it happens from time to time.

Hello, I'm still alive, just not playing MM8BDM.  I'm hereby putting this expansion on hiatus (with cancelation very likely depending on if I truly want to pull the plug).  Why?  Well, here's the list of reasons.

1)  I don't care about MM8BDM that much right now.
2)  Everybody and their mom has started an expansion.
3)  The only material I'd really started on is all related to Kirby's Adventure, which now has it's own expansion, so...yeah.

Title: Re: The Nintendo Unofficial Expansions - CANCELED
Post by: Mr. X on February 13, 2011, 09:41:09 PM
This is officially canceled thanks to other projects started up by other people completely taking away anything that could be good in this pack.  I made this project to avoid having tons of little expansions, but in the end, that's what did it in Although, a month and a half absence doesn't exactly help it
