Title: MM8BDM Weapon Competiton #1 - THE WINNER

It's over! Let's do a quick overview of all the weapons I received. I'm proud of all those who gave it a go. I hope you all learned a thing or two about making weapons in Skulltag, and get inspired to do more and help other users out who have questions!

To give these a try, open the launcher, add the file and use "Give all" to find the new weapon. You CANNOT use more than one of these files at a time however.

ENTRIES (in no partic order):

DTD - Flame Rail (http://www.sendspace.com/file/fg833s): This weapon charges up like the BFG in Doom and pretty much deals out the same amount of pain... if it connects. You can hold the charge and it seems to send players sky high if you don't hit them directly!
Yellow Devil - Flamethrower (http://www.4shared.com/file/3VgPOPmt/FlameThrower.html): This is a flamethrower type weapon that spreads fire rapidly in front of you (but has a very long range!). The altfire throws OHKO tackle fires but we weren't judging for altfires.
Blaze - Solar Mine (http://www.mediafire.com/?q2uce6v2gdbmnye): This weapon creates huge balls of fire that linger around in the map and damage any enemies that happen to run into them. They last forever (I think) and hurt like crazy.
tsukiyomaru0 - Gun De Sol (http://www.mediafire.com/?evs3fw1i6exx9pz): When the fire button is tapped you fire fast projectiles, but if you hold it you create a sort of beam shield that damages enemies (but blocks your view). It eats ammo like no tomorrow though!
Lio - Will-O-Wisp Knife (http://www.mediafire.com/?dz9v70ezupfsdvv): This weapon is a knife with ghostly properties. It can be charged for 3 different attacks. Without a charge it fires a ghostly projectile. Second charge fires a bigger more damaging projectile. The final charge uses the knife as a melee attack, which can murder people!
Kapus - Flame Shield (http://www.sendspace.com/file/p7tuzj): This weapon is a bit buggy (crashed me on few occasions) but I get the premise of it. It's supposed to be the flame shield from sonic 3. It hurts players while it's active, and pressing the fire button charges you forward like charge kick (I couldn't tell if it did extra damage in this state).
TheBladeRoden - Fire Flower (http://www.mediafire.com/?glpa07a1w0ct65d): It's the Fire Flower from Mario! This weapon fires the iconic bouncing fireballs from super mario bros. They can be thrown upward/downward but always have the same bouncing height once they land.
MagnetMan497 - Flame Knife (http://www.mediafire.com/?wff3j3107b3rwsn): This weapon had some problems, I had to manually go in and fix a few things before I could play it properly. Anyway this is another knife weapon that is thrown.

Once all the entries were obtained, I sat down and tried each one out. I tested them with bots and with a human player online to see which one felt like it belonged in MM8BDM based on balance, look and feel.

And the winner is.... *drumroll*

Sounds fun. I love making new weapons in Doom. Once I get done with map project this weekend(if everything works well), I'll give it a shot.

Seems cool, considering fireweapons are fun.  :mrgreen: and I have 4 years of downloaded wads/pk3's to see what's possible and how to do them stuff. Lol unfair advantage.

Woop! I finished everything other than the actual weapon code. I've got all the projectiles working and such... I really hope I win this. I've been putting a lot of effort into all of this  :mrgreen: .

And now for some interesting facts:
*I didn't have any interest in reusing the Buster Arm or throw sprites that were offered in the template. So, instead, I made a cheap Gun Del Sol FPS center view sprite that I'm glad that didn't show at my screenies.
*It behaves EXACTLY like the Gun Del Sol with Knight frame. NO EXCEPTION. Tap shot for a Solar Shot and hold for a Solar Wave. I had so much problem to put this to work properly... Almost gave up, at a point.
*The "Solar wave" that occurs when you hold shot weren't really "lazily sprited" as they may seem. They were results of experiments with different effects (some of which didn't go well because they "disappeared" too easily when close to a wall).
*Notice the lack of icon? I had the icon but messed up and lost it, lol!
*Took more than 6 hours to get it done. But, hey, it's my very first weapon! XD

-A Weapon that acts like a freestanding Solar Ball (and acts similar to those old mines stuck in the ocean),when touched causes Eight Solar Balls to fire out and Hit the enemy

-can be used to set traps

Here goes a motivation for you:
I made Gun Del Sol. My first Decorate coding, my first weapon was Gun Del Sol. It is not as hard as it seems, it is actually VERY easy.Of course you'll spend half of the development making sprites and sounds and the later half will be with coding and fixing.
But, trust me, it is nowhere hard. If you have trouble understand what this or that command does, go to Zdoom Wiki. It clears up everything for you.

Quick question, would a will-o'-wisp flame be classified as hot? Theorically of course, since what the weapon uses could be ethanol based fire (Blue flame) for that matter. I don't want to be limited to yellow/red colors.

What. The. Fuck. I magic weand, delete, save my sprites in Paint.net.

When I open them up in SlumpEd, they have white backgrounds and are tucked away on the bottom right corner. What did I do wrong? This is all I need and then I can submit it

They are PNG. I modified the offsets just like skins. Whatever I fixed it.

Had the same problem he had before. Paint.Net ISN'T as reliable as Photoshop., so...

I tried to compile the ACS for WCOLORS, and this came up:

Line 6 in file "UsersPublicDoom Builder 2CompilersHexenWCOLORS.acs" ...
UsersPublicDoom Builder 2CompilersHexenWCOLORS.acs:6: Couldn't find include file "custom/newweapon.txt".

How can I fix that?

Check line 6 and compare with nearby lines or with the template.

On another note... the coding part was easy. It's the SPRITES that piss me off. They're transparent, but after setting offsets just like with skins, they are unaligned. It is especially annoying, this being a throwing weapon. Then, my idle sprite appears in the top right corner. Is it because it is called XXXXA1, which I use in the coding or what? ARG!

I had a problem kinda like this. In Slumped, try getting rid of the .png part of the lump name (hit f2 to rename a lump). Once you're done save it and then try realigning the arm. Save and try again. If this works, it's a bug in SLumped.

Odd, I didn't have this problem here. Dealling with offsets can be quite annoying sometimes, but I doubt it is SlumpEd's fault.

I only see four colors...
Oh, 5th is transparent...

But doesn't background/menu sprites allow a 5th color? (At least in MM5, I think)
Also, sprites can only have 4 colors (counting transparent) per 8x8 tile.

Black, white, skin-color, cyan, blue, and transparent. Therefore sprites can have 5 or even 6 colors.

Wrong you are. His face was another layer, sepparated from his body and helmet. You can check this in any reliable NES emulator. You'll find some tiles with Megaman's face.

And the item icons falls under the "background" rule, which allowed all four colors to be used because the transparent didn't exist (or so I remember).

Some functions haven't been ported over to Skulltag yet. It used to be fairly obvious on the Wiki but now things have updated and it's harder to tell. For now you'll have to go with the bounce flags such as DOOMBOUNCE, HEXENBOUNCE and HERETICBOUNCE.

1) Learn how to make weapons

2) Think of a good fire weapon

3) Make said fire weapon.

Combine Charge Kick and Star Crash's mechanics.

It is not THAT hard, and Gun Del Sol was the FIRST thing I EVER made in Decorate. Actually, this is the first elaborated programming I ever did!

Well, after some offline and online testing I realized my weapon isn't very responsive in comparison to the official weapons and I'll have to recode part of it AND redo the HUD sprites into something more coherent. I honestly don't think I'll finish it the way I want to in 3 days so I'll probably have to sit this one out, but we will see.

Kapus, method to turn the shield off depends on how it is actually spawned to the game world. If you took Leaf Shield as example, just give an inventory item to the player when the shield is activating. An item whitch does nothing and players are unaware of it. When you fire, check for that item and go in a state when you disable shield and take the said item. Look closely through Leaf Shield coding if you do not really understand what I am talking about.

After looking at crash bomb's files I finally figured out how to get it to explode when hitting walls.

On the downside it has to bounce off the floor at a fixed height now

PS Keep in mind I will only be judging the weapon based on it's functionally as a MM8BDM weapon. So while these custom weapon sprites, energy bars, altfires etc are nice (and good practice, so keep it up!), these things won't win you the competition  ;)

The next competition will probably be a mapping one but we'll have more weapon compos soon so look out for em!

I think I've done as much as I can with this weapon. Its extremely messy and not very appealing, but at least it does its job. It works the way I wanted it to.

But Mike said that the appearance doesn't really count that much, so..I guess I'm done.

Personally, I loved the flamethrower.
Especially the glitch with alt fire always having ammo :).

Funny enough I spent the last couple days getting it to bounce more realistically, but then decided to go with the fixed height version at the last hour.
