Title: The manly Brossession tournament: Rawk wins too lazy to edit
Post by: Orange juice :l on February 25, 2011, 07:02:34 PM
Gentlemen... we need more corn tournaments!

Yes that's right, we're having another one for the poor saps who are willing to enter.

*cue groaning*

But this time, it's MANLY POSSESSION.

Rules:
Must be at least 3 points per match with 1 match minimum; multiple matches on multiple maps are ok.
Must be held for 45 seconds at minimum. (sv_possessionholdtime 45)
BEFORE YOU ASK: Possession servers are in short supply, so if all players agree, a player can host it.
...That's pretty much it.

The lineup:
UPDATES TO THE BRACKET: Stonefunk and Michael712 moved to bottom right bracket to reduce lag for them in the semis.
Tails is fighting Obelisk instead because DR M.S.Cossack and Ficarra1002 are both late and in the same bracket.

That's right kids, only three rounds! That means that it won't take obnoxiously long!

Current victims:

0 spots remain get to work

Super special secret awards:
Super amazing pictures made in paint will be uploaded when people actually earn them.

Not sharing: Drop the circuit board into a pit, leaving it unrecoverable.
(click to show/hide)

The more sacred it is, the funner it is to corrupt: Kill the possessor with the time in the red (3 or less seconds)
(click to show/hide)

What is possession, why can't I shot: Earn maxpoints*6 frags (kill a lot of people)
(click to show/hide)

Theft is bad: Don't frag anyone.
(click to show/hide)

Unfriendly fire: Score a point after having a chaser frag another instead of you.
(click to show/hide)

Tactical self elimination: Suicide while holding the board.
(click to show/hide)

Yoink: Score a board after taking it from someone you didn't damage.
To be uploaded/remade
(click to show/hide)

Good kitty: Frag someone with tango while being the possessor.
(click to show/hide)

Metal F**king Gear: Telefrag someone as the possessor.
(click to show/hide)

Screw you guys, I'm going home: Ragequit.
(click to show/hide)

U mad?: Frag the possessor thrice in a row with the same weapon. Others killing the possessor or becoming the possessor do not break the streak.
Still need to make this one

Engaged to Eddie: Get Gravity hold or Time stopper from Eddie.
To be made

Still waiting: Be the first to the finals.

Alright guys, a quick heads up: The first round is going to be a preliminary of sorts. It's going to be set up on "who gets the lowest ping with each other", so if there is more than one suitable match, I go to an RNG.

Also, I will be away from the 2nd-5th of March, so if we get more entries, I'll let them in over me (however, this is on a laptop, so I might be able to get on to moderate)

I get more PM's about medals than I do actual MM8BDM content so for now I'm locking this until I decide whether to take the whole system down, hire some medal moderators or just simply take down the medals that are a SLIGHTLY ambiguous.

I wouldn't count on it.

He still handed out the Elecman medal to the Valentine's Day winner, so I presume everything goes on as normal.  :ugeek:

Also, here seems like a good place to dump my opinion on medals.

Medals--unlike post count--are a good way to show who has sovereignty in a forum.  They show people--at least, people observant/smart enough to notice them and know what they mean--who exactly knows what they're talking about.
"I won the Cutstuff Champion medal!  I know how to win at this game, so listen when I critique your battle strategy!"
"I earned the Cutstuff Artist medal!  I know how to draw, so listen to me when I critique your art!"
"I've earned the MM8BDM Extender medal!"  Surely you're seeing a pattern by now.
However, these medals do the community no good unless the medal bearers are willing to share their knowledge--which many of them are.

About the competition, here's hoping it gets done a bit better than a certain other competition.  My recommendation is 1:15 for 1 vs 1, 1:00 for 1 vs 1 vs 1 and :45 for 1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1.

45 seconds minimum, and a minimum of 3 board captures. Other than that, it's any agreed maps, point limits, # of maps, etc.

And yes, it's free for all possession. No buckshot/instagib.

FUUUUUUUUUUUCK I LOST.
Long story short, you need to define best of 3 rounds.
I lost to rtist after he and I played a close first game in Flash Man. The score was 3-2. I then gave rtist another chance by making it best of 3 games. He sweeped me in both matches 3-0, leaving me angry, but not butthurt enough to win the "screw you guys" medal. Anyways, we had a last round after that to confirm his entry and he won 3-0 again. When it was all over, I ranted like I was Glenn Beck talking about democrats. Famous excerpts include:
Quote from: "I"
FUCKING-A
IT'S LIKE WINNING A GOLDEN TICKET, AND THEN GIVING IT TO THE HOBO NEXT TO YOU.
I OUTGUNNED HIM. I OUTDODGED HIM. HE JUST OUTRAN ME.
CRAP.
Rtist wins
2-3 (flash man)
3-0 (fire man)
3-0 (cut man)
3-0 (bright man)

Post by: rtist on March 02, 2011, 06:15:12 AM
The match with Bluebrawl was an unusual one, to say the least; it featured two changes in the initial agreement prior to the match. Still, it was an entertaining match that produced four games and one epic showdown.

The first game, on mm2fla (Flash Man), was by mutual agreement, though based on my suggestion. I had trouble moving about the map, since it's icy and has some tight squeezes. It also had me saving several points with :01 secs left (I think I had 4-5 "saves" total in this game alone) In the end, Bluebrawl outmaneuvered me and finally won the game (and I had assumed the match) 3-2.

Since we had only agreed on one game, I was all but ready to make the report afterward here. However, Bluebrawl, still on a high after an epic win, wanted to continue playing, and offered to extend the match to best of three. I had assumed that he knew what he was risking here, and I really didn't just want to go out in the first round (again), so I chose to accept, not only wanting to continue playing, but thinking it would produce more epic games like the last one we had.

I chose the second map (mm1fir: Fire Man) and had no trouble with the wider hallways and ladders. I won in surprisingly easy fashion (considering we had just played one epic already) 3-0 (I had finished with 0 frags, but that's because I killed myself a few times to get there).

The third game was Bluebrawl's choice (mm1cut: Cut Man). From my end, I produced two excellent atomic fire saves with :01 left that prevented him from scoring. In the end, thanks to some more speedy maneuvering, I won again 3-0.

We were a little confused as to what to do at this point. On one hand, the initial agreement (one game) had him advancing. On the other hand, the adjusted agreement (best of three) saw me produce an excellent display of possession (and winning 3-0, 3-0). So, to settle the argument once and for all, I offered to play a fourth game to decide it. If Bluebrawl won, he would advance. If I won, I would advance. Bluebrawl insisted that the map should be mm4bri (Bright Man), and, feeling like I owed him for extending the match in the first place, I accepted this choice.

The name of the game on this level was B-E-A-T; that tool lets you fly away from danger. Bluebrawl also dropped the circuit board into a pit once, but I used beat to retrieve it. I also produced another :01 save during the game (thanks to atomic fire). In the end, thanks to atomic fire and beat, I won the final game 3-0.

So I guess that means I won the match 2-3, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0. I know the second, third, and fourth games could be considered duds (though they featured some good play on both ends), but the first game was an epic fight worthy of a showing here (via youtube). It's a shame that it didn't get recorded; that first game was easily worth it.

GGs, Bluebrawl. Trust me: you're too good of a player to let something like this get you down. You'll do better in the next tourney (that I hopefully get to run!).

NOTE: I didn't get screencaps; I will in the future matches.

Just for the record, Kapus defeated Michael 3-1, 3-1.

I'll let them explain the overall details; I saw the end of the second game and was told (by both players) who won and the scoreline. If you want details, they'd have to explain them...

Glad it's someone from East Coast, so ping won't be so bad.

I defeated Michael. Best 2 out of 3, I won both games.

First Match: Knight Man.(chosen by me) I won 3 to 1.

Second Match: Bright Man.(chosen by Michael) I won 3 to 1.

@sonicfan966: I believe that was one of the reasons that the time zones/areas were necessary. Otherwise it'd all be jumbled up with some random lag spikes.
Anyway, I look forward to our match and I hope for a fun game. Even if I win, I'll probably lose the next round because Kapus. I played some rounds with him before his and Michael's match, but I couldn't even get a point in.

I play today against Michael712, i didnt play since 3 weeks really, i lost again the CPU in topman map...it will be a funny match for me..

EDIT: I won but it was close...

Toadman map (by Michael712), i won 3-2
Gutsman map (by me) i won 3-1 but we continued,  5-3

We had a little "bug", the program (the thing) was over the rocks, impossible to take, we restarted the map...

Question: Does the Circuit Board have a way to come back into play if someone drops it into a death trap? If not, what do we do?

One can use Rush Coil, Beat, and/or Skull Barrier to snag it from the Death Trap without dying yourself.

If none are available, it is likely that someone will propose a map change.  Go with it.

If you get skull barrier it instantly get removed from your weapon set  (Apart from a time when Kapus managed to use it, but then it kinda screwed up)

The second round, the board got stuck, so we did another 1 point round on the same map

"Good" is an understatement. That was the best match I've ever had. It was really intense. My blood was boiling. Especially during that second match. I commend you for having such skill. I hope for a rematch later on. So that we could see how far we've gone. But that's later.

I think it would have been better if *cough* hadn't constantly been entering the game. With us constantly restarting the match, was just eating away at me. I was crazy nervous. But even with less people supporting me, I pulled through.

Again, thanks for an amazing match.

The nice thing about possession is that it's much harder to predict over normal duels. The duel tournament hasn't really produced any upsets (except by forfeit, of course), and the possession tournament, you could argue, already has one (Kenkoru defeating Turboman is an upset, if for no better reason than the fact that Turbo hosted both games).

The unpredictability of possession is fun, and it's very tense too. It'll be fun seeing how the other first round matchups play out.

Two awards: log Kenkoru down for a single :01 kill, OJ.

Also, Bluebrawl, in his first game with me (on mm2fla), got 21 kills (vs 20 for me) and won that round 3-2. Surely that is meritorious of something?

XD nice comeback Rtist. Also, I'm now certain that this tournament will end long before Stonefunk's and that we should create a schedule just to make sure. Work on getting the 1st round done on Friday, OJ. Place a schedule on here for everyone to see. If they don't like the time, then they can post on the topic to ask for a change. If we don't enforce deadlines and schedules, this tournament will drag on just as badly as Stonefunk's duel tournament. I don't think there's been an update to that bracket in over a week.

I generally agree with this, but with one caveat; if both players are unable to meet the Friday deadline but are willing to give a time and date on either this Saturday and Sunday, then I would let that stand.

If any pair of players make such an agreement but fail to meet in spite of that, I would threaten to do a double forfeit; as Bluebrawl stated, we don't need too many delays. It's the first round! Players agreed to play their games! If they wanted in and didn't play their first round game, I would threaten to ban those players from future events, as they are a play risk.

Also note: the thing holding up Stonefunk's duel tournament at this point prior to the final match are CutmanMike v SaviorSword, and the winner of that match v Korby. Both of these matches must be played before Rawk Hawk's final opponent is determined.

The first semifinal was played when OJ decided that Chaos_Fantasy won his first round match by automatic forfeit over MidnightTH. This set the stage for Chaos_Fantasy v Roc's Creations v rTist.

Anyway, the first map was mm4dc1, and it proved to be difficult to score any points here with all the open space and lack of good hiding spots. I finally scored the first two points, but Roc tried to make a comeback, and scored two of his own. I finally got the deciding score when I hid at the edge of the magnet missile spot. rTist 3, Roc 2, Chaos 0.

Map two was at mm4nap. Rush jet and the e-tank were key here. It saw Roc and rTist go neck and neck, trying to get the win. I got the last jet, and the last point as a result though. rTist 3, Roc 2, Chaos 0.

Map three was mm3gem. The e-tank and rush coil help a lot in this map. Such is what allowed me to dominate this map with an easy victory. rTist 3, Roc 0, Chaos 0.

Total points:
rTist 9
Roc 4
Chaos 0.

So you now have your first finalist: rTist!

Good game, guys. It was well played on all ends.

Kenkoru, Kapus, and Muzaru played their semifinal tonight. I'm a little tired to explain what happened (I'll try to tomorrow), but Kapus won this semifinal.

Kapus: 3 wins
Kenkoru: 2 wins
Muzaru: 0 wins.

I might as well add the several awards that were achieved here.

Kenkoru and Muzaru accomplished "Not Sharing."

Muzaru accomplished "The more sacred it is, the funner it is to corrupt."

Everybody achieved "Unfriendly Fire and Yoink."
Title: Ahh...
Post by: Kenkoru on March 14, 2011, 05:22:44 AM
I was way too tired. I did fine at the beginning. But Muzaru...oy....he stalled with all his trolling. It took half an hour to decide on the first map. Not as much on  the others, but still too long. Pretty close to 3 hours the whole round took. started at 10PM for me. As I'm typing this, it's past 1AM. But I'm not tired right now, and I mad that I wasn't this awake during the match. It also doesn't help being sick and having random pop-ups all the time.

Flash Man...oh boy...that took forever. We all constantly Pharaoh hugged until Kapus finally managed to pull through and win. And even though I earned "Not Sharing" in Heat Man's stage, since it was by accident, it's more like a "Whoopsie-Daisy" or something.

But, I have to hand it to Kapus, but not and Muzaru (Even though he focused more on fragging the other player rather than winning). They both did great. I was shaking for the first half and before we chose the first map. But it took too long, and I lost the anxiety. I just wanted to get it over with. And I'm glad I put up a fight. I did a lot better than I expected to do. I was close to winning on Elec Man's stage, but I just didn't pull through. Great game, guys. And King Yamato claimed to have helped me lose....he's just teasing, right?

lol well I guess you guys already figured it out, because THIS is what Ficarra sent me:

I forfeit due to the fact my internet can't even handle connecting to a server for more than a minute.
If my mom says "The router isn't broken" one more time, I'm going to explode.

I might be able to have working internet by friday.... If I'm still even in the tournament.

I can't believe I'm going against Rawk Hawk, though. As for Obelisk.... never heard of 'em. :p
Can't wait for our matches guys. Looking forward to them.

Sorry brohams, but I went to sleep around 9PM EST due to mid-terms. Didn't see the post until today.

However, today was my last day (of the quarter) so I'll be free all next week due to spring break. I can't play until Monday, though. I sent Rawk a PM with the deets.

EDIT: Blargh, first page.

Well, since Smash won't be set until Monday, sometime after 5 on Monday would be great. We just need Obelisk.

Smash was too late. I lost..really bad.... No surprise here. (Edit: Forgot to add Rawk won)

Metalman: 3-0
Airman: 3-0

Was in a rush. Skills were rusty. Not focusing. Smash if your not gonna manage your time right then dont join. To tell truth I don really call that a game.... ??? .... Finished

All right, its rTist v Kapus v Orange Juice v Rawk Hawk in the final.

Place your bets! Who wins the final??

A) rTist
B) Kapus
C) Orange Juice
D) Rawk Hawk

You know what, I really can't seem to get managed over at my end. Please remove me from the tourney, so Rawk and Obelisk can get finished up.

We're discussing it.
Best case scenario, we can get OJ back and finish this.
Worst case seems to be we just forget him and just have it between Kapus, Rtist, and myself.

With all respects to OJ, I'd rather finish this out than leave it unfinished. It was a different pace tournament and it was interesting.
Title: Re: The manly Brossession tournament: Do your semis
Post by: rtist on March 26, 2011, 03:49:38 PM
This tournament won't be canceled just because OJ doesn't want to finish it anymore.

I see three courses of action:

1) OJ returns to play the final (best case)
2) OJ remains out of play by this coming Thursday. We then decide from here:
     a) We play without OJ.
     b) We play without OJ and replace him with another player involved with the tournament.

So we either play with OJ, play without OJ, or replace OJ.

If we replace OJ, I suggest we replace him with someone from OJ's semifinal. Knowing that Stonefunk forfeitted earlier, I would nominate rebootraeg to replace OJ. However, I would point out that Roc's Creations, Kenkoru, and Obelisk would be worthy of merit to replace OJ too.

Maybe a possession match between Roc's Creations, Kenkoru, Obelisk, and Rebootraeg would be in order: the winner replaces OJ in the final if he still decides by the deadline (Thursday) if he doesn't want to play.

Kapus, Rawk Hawk; what say you to this plan of replacement? I think it'd be pretty interesting....

I hope this wont be like last time... Since roc is in the match Im guessing he would win.... But theres no harm in Failing than total fail Trying that ragequiting....

I may not be in the tournament, but I think you'd be barking up the wrong tree by nominating people to take his place.  People would be jumping up and down to get in, then there would be fights.

Just have a 3 man final.

I like this idea. But not as to replace Orange Juice. Just a grudge match. I'd rather it just be Rawk Hawk, Kapus and Rtist than a 4th person to replace OJ. Having less people would make it more tense in my opinion. There can be two players that try to win and a third that tries to get in everyone else's way.

Oh, and does anyone know what the "Secret Round" is? Or did I overlook it?

You didn't overlook this, but only OJ really knew about it. He was the one who had this in mind, but he never revealed what it was before he "retired"....

The Final has been played, and given the length of the first game, we all collectively decided that the first to two game victories would win the final.

The first game was on Knight Man.
(click to show/hide)

There were several maps in between this one and the next finished game; it was just tough for any of us to get anything going on some of these maps.

The second (finished) game was on Ice Man
(click to show/hide)

Again, several more maps were played (without any progress what-so-ever) until we reached Centaur Man
(click to show/hide)

The final tally was:
Rawk Hawk: 2 Wins, 8 Captures
rTist: 1 Win, 4 Captures
Kapus: 0 Wins, 4 Captures
Orange Juice: 0 Wins, 2 Captures

So Rawk Hawk won the tournament, with rTist as runner-up, and Kapus (assuming there was a tie-breaker on Captures) in 3rd.

All hail the victorious Rawk!

EDIT: My understanding is that the match will be posted to youtube, though I don't remember who recorded it. If I figure it out, I'll post a link.
