Title: Starcraft
Post by: Korby on May 22, 2011, 03:48:57 AM
So. Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are Real Time Strategy games made by Blizzard that have three races.

Terran, the humans. Their name comes from "Terra" and the most popular way to say the resident of something, to add an "N "to the end.

Zerg, the swarm. Kekekekekekekeke.

Protoss, the cool ones English "speaking" aliens. No comment.

Oh stalker, you so silly.

Terra is Spanish for earth, and it is common in sci-fi to use that world to denote humans from earth.

I play Starcraft Brood Wars as Protoss for my main race. I am a terrible player as well :p. Average APM for me is around 60.

I personally perfer Brood Wars over StarCraft 2 any day (not that I hate it).

I really really prefer Starcraft 2 over Brood Wars, but I own Brood Wars. I don't really have a race I play in Brood Wars, but I THINK I usually play Terran.

Meanwhile in number 2, I play Protoss.

I play this occasionally thanks to my IRL friends being obsessed with the damn thing. Although most of the time I just play Terran and make doom drops.

I'd get Starcraft 2, but in Malta everything is so damn expensive (due to import tax and shit like that). >_>

Post by: Cheminometry on May 22, 2011, 11:27:52 AM
I have the first game an expansion pack, but I haven't beatenit yet. I was actually kind of dissapointed that the second game didn't add races like Warcraft 3 did to that series. Speaking of which, I've been avoiding the second game like the plague because I hear the DRM involved is crazy stupid.
Title: Re: Starcraft
Post by: TheBladeRoden on May 22, 2011, 05:41:25 PM
Well you need to be connected to a battle.net account to play, not sure what other DRM came with it.

Actually "terra" is latin. The spanish for earth is "tierra".
Also, I still need Brood War. :(

I have developed a hate for this game since all the Korean kids at school play it with the volume on high

Korean kids are unfair anyways... They beat us in gaming anyday.

But i love Starcraft ^^
I played SC1 as a simple gamer just enjoying and toying with it.
I melted when i heard SC2 was on its way.
And yeah... Im a Zerg player.
And pretty much all of my SC2 playing friends are protoss -.-

Asside from map imabalances, Starcraft BW is balanced in terms of race vs race. StarCraft 2 still has a bit more balancin' act to get the balance right, still its a Blizzard game and it is really balanced compared to most games around the industry. Protoss is on the strong side on StarCraft 2 now so I guess I can see why they all play Protoss.

Who here checks on Team Liquid often?
Title: Re: Starcraft
Post by: KillerChair on May 22, 2011, 09:42:58 PM
I dont check Team Liquid that often... Only when friends tell me to.
I do check alot of the Day[9] Daily's though. That man is a genious :D (and a good gamer's comedian)
Still personally i think SC2 is balanced good enough.
I even saw a chart of the SC2 games played on each matchup and how many percentage won or lost showed at the blizzcon (looked up on youtube). Most of them being something like 52% VS 48%.
Title: Re: Starcraft
Post by: Korby on May 23, 2011, 12:40:44 AM
In terms of casters, I watch Husky(Huskie?) and Day[9].

When I first played Starcraft (64) I thought I was going to play Zerg, because of swarming. SO MUCH SWARMING.

Except then I learned "wahh it's hard to play zerg." Then my little brother got Starcraft 2, and I just occasionally play on his. I play Protoss, because I'm a terribad Zerg and I just don't like Terran. Plus, my Probes are free to build.

Honestly, I can barely even play Brood Wars. I've gotten so used to Starcraft 2! I should probably play one of y'all one of these days though. You wanna play, Savior?
Title: Re: Starcraft
Post by: SaviorSword on May 23, 2011, 12:48:36 AM
Brood Wars? Sure! One problem though is that my Brood Wars's CD Key was from a Key Gen. so I can't get on Bnet :(
Got a spare CD to give? :D
Title: Re: Starcraft
Post by: Korby on May 23, 2011, 12:51:06 AM
Well I guess that would probably complicate playing.
Title: Re: Starcraft
Post by: SaviorSword on May 23, 2011, 01:29:04 AM
Woops! I meant a spare CD KEY. Either way I'd like to play against someone, don't expect me bein' amazin' at all.

Wow the MSL is almost finished already! (Big Korean BW tournament, look it up on Team Liquid)

And even then, I'm pretty sure that's not allowed here.

Post by: SaviorSword on May 23, 2011, 04:16:56 AM
Yup, that's does stretch into the ugly legal stuff so let's not go there.

So where/how do ya guys get yar daily dose of StarCraft?
Title: Re: Starcraft
Post by: Mr. Sean Nelson on May 23, 2011, 05:34:36 AM
I usually play against CPU using custom maps that I build.

I'm in the same boat as far as a CD key right now, although $20 would remedy that.

I do not like RTS games, with the exception of Starcraft + Brood War.
They are amazingly balanced, and the storyline is very well designed.

Personally, I prefer the Protoss, but I'll do Terran as well.

I practice against hard AI every now and then as random just to keep my skills up a bit.
And i play alot of team games.
Got my own account so i play whenever i feel like it. (mostly with friends)
If any european players wish to share Character ID and play with me then go ahead.

I'm 24, but I didn't start playing it until around 2003, so I don't think I have much of an advantage.

That's why ya need to learn to scout out yar enemy. If yar not ready for a cheese and instead go for a marco build, prepare to lose. :(
If a 4 pool or other  failed, then its likely that the game is yar's since yar enemy spent all their resource up on the 4 pool.

Thats how i roll baby ;)

Every 40 seconds or so i (and all the other zergs) have to check all my bases for injects.
Not to mention thinking about either making attacking units or drones cause you cant do both at the same time :p

But yeah... To me playing as Terran looks like hell.
I mean... How are you supposed to know exactly how many barracks you need for good constant production?

Well all races must keep a certain econ to support the production facilities, so if ya go for a quick end during mid-game then ya probably won't need THAT many buildin's. Same goes for other scenarios as well.

Say if ya know what yar opponent is doin' and not chessin' ya, then timin' is key when to push in or not.

Just for kicks, a cool TvZ I'd say. This is a professional match by the way.
Leta = Terran player
Neo.G_Soulkey = Zerg player

Start at 9:18 for the game to start.

Immortals are an exelent choice!
Though one of your ally's would need phoenixes/vikings/marines/mutas/and so on.
And if not... Better make more Immortals ^^

Ive been practicing with reapers for monobattles ^^

Been awhile since I posted here. Here's my FAVORITE games ever played. I musta watched these like 100 times over.

This is Kim Taek Yong aka "Bisu" (Protoss player) vs Mae Jae Yoon aka "Savior" (Zerg Player)

This is at the 2007 MSL Finals

A little history lesson about these 2 players, so ya guys will understand the significance of these games. Savior was fresh off of winnin' 2 straight MSL titles. MSL titles are rather big and he had 3 in total. No one has reached 4 golds, ever. Savior durin' that time had also revolutionized TvZ where Zerg players suffered a lot. Here's a link to a nicely written article (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=226236). These games was on Savior's 5th MSL and many thought that he would win a 4th gold and break the 3 gold record. Bisu is a relatively new player in the scene, an up-and-comin' rookie. He is walkin' the royal road (One who qualifies for a tournament and wins the gold on their 1st qualification). Savior's PvZ at that time from 2006 to before he meet Bisu was a 80.5% win rate. Bisu on paper had no chance to beat Savior. The final is played in a Best-of-5 games, and here are the games.

I am Chinese, not Korean. And, NO THEY ARE NO CLOSE ENOUGH!!!
I am not a progamer who used to earn 200k+ a year at one point nor am I banned from StarCraft progamin' because of match fixin'. I play Protoss, not Zerg and my APM of mid 60s should be enough proof that I am NOT Ma Jae Yoon. Though it kinda would be cool, except for the match fixin' part.

Looks like a bunch of chaotic stuff to me.

As for main race/off race.

Im a zerg by heart. Protoss second. Terran third.
Both in SC2 and SC1.
Though in SC2 i suck at terran, while in SC1 im not that terrible with them.

For the people that enjoy playing SC1 and have got SC2.

It's even worse in Starcraft 2, where you can charge up your void rays on the destructible rocks that are often in the backdoor of the base.

However, referrin' to them every once in awhile won't hurt either.

Let's start with the basics, I could only help ya out a little since I'm not that good either. Maybe ya could post a replay of ya vs a computer.
Also remember that havin' a well balanced map is important too. There's plenty from the pro scene (which is mostly what I play on anyways), and there's Lost Temple which I suppose is a good enough start (though heavily Terran favored).

Here's a few maps that I recommend downloadin'.

Triathlon (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/maps/download/271/(3)Triathlon.scx)
Rather interestin' map layout.

Andromeda (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/maps/download/175/(4)Andromeda.scx)
An oddie but goodie. Balanced map that's for macro games (long games).

Fighting Spirit (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/maps/download/237/(4)Fighting%20Spirit.scx)
Statically THE most balanced map in history.

Destination (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/maps/download/188/(2)Destination.scx)
Not a FINAL Destination though, but this is a rather popular map.

Python (http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/maps/download/147/(4)Python.scx)
As Lost Temple can't get anymore famous, it spawned this map which is a lot more balanced, but still slightly Terran favored.

Here's tip that will totally gimp the A.I. badly beyond belief. Send a worker, usually the faster worker works better (Probe, Drone, SCV from fastest to slowest in that order). Get it to attack the base of yar enemy when its still in the beginnin'. That will make the A.I. get ALL of their workers to chase that one worker of yars and they will chase it for a really long time. With 10+ workers chasin' after one, they will fall WAY behind in their economy. Of course the A.I. has bad marco, yar sure to win 9 times out of 10 from simply outmarcoin' the A.I.
Hehehe, sometimes I send my 4 first workers to attack and I win.

About my favourite race...
I'm a terran redneck.

I played Starcraft 2 for a while but I couldn't get the hang of it. I played protoss.

Having said that, I understand the game and love watching people play it. I have a ton of people subscribed on youtube who play/talk about SC2

As much as a good game SC2 is, I'm still a way bigger Brood War fan any day. SC2 knowledge is outta my scope and tryin' to apply BW knowledge to SC2 doesn't not work out 9 times out of 10. However, basic mechanics like economics still applies.

I personally cannot play Brood Wars after playin' 2.
Except 2 can't run on my computer.

I still sucked though  :p

My computer is SOOO not able to play SC2.
So, I haven't played it yet.

But, I can't imagine it was as good or better strategically as Brood War.
I could be wrong though...

This is very opinionated heavily. The best way for ya to decide to watch games and pick which one ya think deserves that title.
In Team Liquid, the argument of BW vs SC2 is heavily looked down upon, but it often pops up in areas like which is "better". Best answer again is to watch some games.
I personally think its Brood War, but that's my OPINION.
