I noticed that a lot of you have (well, used to have) graphics from the old Game Boy version of the Pokemon Trading Card game as user avatars. I instantly recognized the pixelated pocket monsters, as I used to love playing my Game Boy, dueling Trainers and collecting cards during my childhood. So a couple weeks ago I changed my avatar to Omanyte and thought, "Did anyone else love that game during their childhoods?"
I actually went out and played the Game Boy TCG yesterday. At first I thought, "Y'know SmashBro, maybe this game isn't as good as you thought. Maybe the game didn't age well, and it won't be fun anymore in today's standards. Maybe you're just going to suffer from a shitty game because you wanted to feel nostalgic."
Started up the game, and immediately at the title screen I'm liking what I'm seeing. The music is upbeat and the graphics are pretty vibrant for such an old game. Then, I start the adventure. Player name "Smash", venturing off and starting the first practice duel of the game, against Laboratory Aide Sam...
... Then the floodgates of my mind burst wide open.
The deck duel theme starts to play, and instantly I remember the tune, eventually humming along near the end when the tune swells to its high. Sure, maybe the game's outdated. Yeah, you can only use cards from three sets. (You get the original Base Set, plus Jungle and Fossil expansions.) Even still, I find myself having an enjoyable time.
So, there you have it. My name is SmashBroPlusB, and I am a huge fucking nerd for the Pokemon TCG game on Game Boy Color. I'm still playing the game, and I got the first badge from the Science Club about an hour ago. Oh yeah, Flying Pikachu TOTALLY kicks ass.
Do any of you remember this game? Have you heard of it? And if so, what are your thoughts? Opinions? Would you be willing to play this game today?
Discuss.
EDIT: I found it. I freaking FOUND IT. Best game theme EVER.
If this is "true 8-bit" then I'm putting it in a freakin' map. Seriously.
