Title: Mendez and his silly maps that no one hosts because yes
Post by: Mendez on August 29, 2011, 07:58:13 PM
Maps made so far:
AMP99 - Kengine. (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11603985/KENGINE.wad)
(click to show/hide)
AMPCTF - Daft Dynamic. (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11603985/FORJCMAHBOI.wad)
(click to show/hide)
So yeah, since AMP is out, I figure I could continue to make maps for the hell of it. Anyways, this is screenshots of a map I might release soon, called "Kengine". It's my little map that plays with 3d floors to try and create some sort of interesting layout. Here's to work.

I'm probably gonna get a link up in a little bit, but that's after working with scripts and item locations. God ffffffffffff scripts.

Maybe you can put this in the same topic with AMP?

Looking good, man. Here's to mapping success!

... Oh yeah, what will you do with these maps? Will you add them to AMP once you build up a good number (3~5) like Messatsu and his CSCM? Even though AMP kicks CSCM in the FUCKING NUTS

I'll only bump that mediocre map pack when I release something for it or I feel no one is hosting it so that I have to bump it to the top again with some meaningless info so that people start caring about it again. In any case, I mayyyy do that. Think of this topic as the testing grounds for potential AMP maps. Also, I feel forced to make more maps so that people even consider hosting it, because lolquantityvsquality. Once we get to 18-20 maps, we'll hope that will be enough for people to start giving a damn.

With the release of the IX-pack, I can gladly say that any hopes of AMP ever getting hosted have been shot into the ground. I think AMP is compatible with IX, but I'm not sure. In any case, RIP AMP's chances of getting hosted.

Llama was right. This thing would last a week and then fade into obscurity.
IN ANY CASE, here's something I cooked up in my spare time over the course of 3 days.
AMP99 - Kengine (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11603985/KENGINE.wad)
This may or may not be the last full custom map I ever make. With no real chance of getting hosted in the near future because lolcustomweapons, I'll most likely fix all the bugs and stuff, slice AMP09 in two, decorate a few more things, and then release a 2nd version so that I can go out on a bang. I feel like Jack Corvus right now. So if you're out there Jack, here's to you.

In all honesty, CSCM is the most popular map pack if only because Messatsu has monopoly over 8BDM.

He's our cuddly evil overlord.

Impress Messatsu enough to want him to put your map pack in his servers, and he will.

Hell, IX pack will probably only be hosted by Mess for the previously incompatible X-Pack maps.

It may never get hosted by Messatsu.

It's a monopoly. What gets done is under the control of whoever chooses to take power.

I'd so host AMP if my router worked the way it should.

Thanks to Obbie for testing the map with me. For folks that downloaded it the first time, the mapinfo is bugged so that means you will have to redownload it and replace the older version. That's of course if you downloaded it at all. Anyways, the map name wasn't inspired by Ken's alias, but by a song I heard by Jeff Mangum. Naming it Kengine was just a little pun that came after.

Regarding this whole monopoly thing....

I have a friend of mine who has FiOS (Verizon's fiber internet in case you live under a rock) at his dad's house. Maybe I'll try and extort him into hosting some test servers.

Jack, I think a lot of more people would play those maps more if you actually listened to the critique the very same people gives you. Alright, so CTF is an underplayed mode, sure, but I think the main reason as to why it isn't as hosted as it usually is is because the map quality is rather dubious. No offense, I like some of them, but they could all use minor or major improvements, any you have a tendency to ignore by replying "it's fine". While you do reserve the last right to judge whether a certain feature in your map is good or bad, it's at least worth to think through the suggestions provided. Gods know I do (or try, at least).

On a completely different subject, what do you need to have compability for? Any pack that add any extra weapons most often need maps to put them on, which are as far as I know, all non-CTF in the packs I know of. The only thing I can think of is Classes, and Classes CTF is rather imbalanced as it is (and probably will still be questionable once the Doc Robot flag carrier is implemented).

Another way to look at it.

If one person says "X" is a problem. You can look at the "X" problem and decide if  it's actually a problem or not.

If a bunch of players says "X" is a problem. Then generally, something is a problem.

You don't have to release the next version with my 3 teams map in it, mainly since it will take awhile and I need time to think on whether or not it's worth it. All the harsh map crititsism going around shoves me the wrong way a little.

Also I will remind you that the TBG map pack is the only reason I really bother hosting CTF. No offence to anyone of course, but I really do like the maps and to me they make CTF mode fun.

I like the intent a lot. By ye gods, CTF really needs to be made more popular, and the TBG CTF pack is a fine attempt to do so. It's the result that's a little jarring, as the quality really doesn't hold up to most other CTF maps, in MM8BDM or no.

Oh by the way Jack, are you redoing stuff to TBGCTF10? I really did love that map and I you want, I can improve it! (Less base based lol, slightly shorter bridge, modifications to stuff, etc.) Please, I want that map in the pack!

Ok guys, seriously now. This is not the place to be discussing TBGCTF, so if need be, let us use the freaking topic I made for said pack.

Nobody gives a flying fuck about my maps :<.
In any case, kengine is going to be AMP14, right after precipitation sibling and before Blaze's ballade.

Guys, I just got this idea for a ctf map.
(click to show/hide)
To explain the image....
the 3 lines represent the major routes the player can take.
Green lines are ladders.
Red circles represent the sections where I'll have to place 3d floors over.
Gray arrows represent slopes, as well as which direction they go to.
Finally, The numbers will represent the height of each section, times 128.
The scale is in the upper right corner, and I might begin work on this over the weeks. I just wanted to know if this was an interesting idea for a CTF map or not. Truth be told, though, I think this map would suck for classes, because loldrillman.

Grid paper blueprint fever really catches on!

Looks pretty cool IMHO. I wouldn't put a window between Light and Wily because Drill Man can just pierce right through it. Make it a solid wall, like a stage boundary or something. I can see Wood Custom dominating here.

It's been a long revision process, but I feel I finally have a solid version of the map that's ready for release? What map is that? Well, it's that one ctf map I've been making for JC. I didn't think this ctf map would be so hard to make, but it's finished. Anyways, this is without the custom texture that JC implemented.
AMPCTF - Daft Dynamic (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11603985/FORJCMAHBOI.wad)
Just look at the screenshots I posted on the TBGCTF topic to get an idea of what it looks like. I also forgot to add a camera into the map because I wanted to ask Messatsu if it was ok to use the code from that one cscm map with the camera.

From what I can see from skimming around the level offline, here's what I've got to say...

First, nice layout. I like how each 'path' takes about the same length to cross, unless you use Rush Coil to quickly spring up to the top bridges. That leads into another thing: Rush Coil. I like that when you spawn in your base, you have access to a Coil which gives you one oppurtunity to take a shortcut in the map, but only one. One problem is that there are some spawns which dump you outside your base, meaning you have to go back and grab one. Either that or expand each base and put more Coils in so everyone has access to them, not just the people who spawned close to them.

One thing is that I find the back room with the Etank and Dive Missile unneccesary. If you decide to keep this room, I would suggest moving the Etank to somewhere else. It seems a bit easy to get, since one only has to spawn, grab a Coil and get the Etank in the next room. And if you do get the Etank and use your Coil, it's not like 'oh no I just used up my Rush Coil now I have to go back to my base and get another one', it's more like 'oh it's okay I just have to go into the next room and grab another one and off I goooooooooo', since, well, the Rush Coil is in the next room.

Also, I think to further encourage platforming and alternative paths, you should put some Item 1's around the map. An Item 1 wouldn't let someone quickly spring up to a higher bridge from the ground floor, so it wouldn't ruin the whole 'only one Rush Coil per trip' idea. Instead, it would give someone quick access between bridges, which would help an escaping player with the opponent's flag.

I would add more, but playing this stage online with people would probably make most of my points obsolete.

Hmm, I'm thinking of going with about 3 item 1's scattered on each side. The e-tank can actually be attained by acquiring strafe-running and is meant to actually make sure the flag holder has a backup (similar to Clockwork Factory and Snakes in Space) but I guess making it hard to acquire it would make more sense. Dive does seem a bit useless, but I just kept it there for the sake of making sure you can miraculously kill the flag bearer and have one of those "HORY SHET I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT JUST HAPPENED" moments. I'll probably add one more Rush coil to each side, and make the e-tank quite difficult to acquire.
Thanks for the advice shade. Once TBGCTF comes out with a new version, people can see it and we'll really begin to analyze it. We still have to do the same thing with your maps too ):

MAJOR EDIT: Download link has been updated with a couple of layout changes and some new items thrown in. I'll see if savior can make a server to test whether or not this map is any good.
